Plastic is cheap and incredibly versatile with properties that make it ideal for many applications. However, these qualities have also resulted in it becoming an environmental issue. We have developed a "disposable" lifestyle and estimates are that around 50% of plastic is used just once and thrown away. Plastic is a valuable resource and plastic pollution is an unnecessary and unsustainable waste of that resource. ***Some facts:-Packaging is the largest end use market segment accounting for just over 40% of total plastic usage.-Annually approximately 500 billion plastic bags are used worldwide. More than one million bags are used every minute.-A plastic bag has an average “working life” of 15 minutes.-Over the last ten years we have produced more plastic than during the whole of the last century.-According to the Container Recycling Institute, 100.7 billion plastic beverage bottles were sold in the U.S. in 2014, or 315 bottles per person.57% of those units were plastic water bottles: 57.3 billion sold in 2014. This is up from 3.8 billion plastic water bottles sold in 1996, the earliest year for available data.-The process of producing bottled water requires around 6 times as much water per bottle as there is in the container.-14% of all litter comes from beverage containers. Halfway | A Short Film about women in STEM Collab Lab 2017-03-16 | ‘Halfway’ is a short film about the daily struggles of women in STEM. The script was developed based on real experiences of women who work in STEM/academic environments. Experiences were recounted through interviews and the distribution of an online survey.This film was commissioned by the Bristol Science Film Festival which is supported by the British Science Association. The channel put out videos dispelling myths about Oxbridge and tried to encourage people to apply. Now that he's a PhD student at Exeter University, the focus has shifted towards vlogs on student/research life, his research and also more conventional YouTube stuff such as ‘Draw My Life’. “I wanted to do something to address the serious social issue of not enough people from ‘normal’ backgrounds getting in to Oxbridge. Visiting The Explorers Fair Collab Lab 2017-03-15 | The first ever Explorers Fair was held 9-11th February at Broadway, Nottingham and we were so pleased to run a video making workshop with them. Here are just a few of the wonderful young people who made videos with us. We made videos with these talented visitors about volcanoes, space, food chains, Lego, magnets, Pokemon, you name it! Presenters were aged from as young as two to teenagers (parents worked behind the scenes). Often there aren't the right resources, skills or contacts. For this reason, many of those wanting to get into science public engagement gravitate towards lower effort or lower cost mediums, for example blogging. Few make their own videos.The demand is out there for online science video content. Some of the most popular channels on YouTube are devoted to science. VSauce, a channel that makes primarily science and mathematics videos, has over 11 million subscribers.And that's where Collab Lab comes in.Who are we?***Florence Schechter - Managing Director***Florence is a science communicator and video producer. She has a personal YouTube channel with over 700,000 views. She is currently part of Steve Cross's Talent Factory, a mutually-supportive group of science performers and communicators working together to make some great things. Florence has a BSc in Biochemistry from the University of Birmingham. Her hobbies include travelling and stroking cats she meets on the street.***Ali Jennings - Creative Director**Ali is a scientist, presenter and film maker - dedicated to exploring scientific ideas in the most creative way imaginable! He has worked with the British Neuroscience Association, Walacea, and CBBC amongst others. Ali has PhD in Neuroscience from University College London, where he studied the effect of dopamine on brain cells, and he lectures at Florida State University.
