Original song "Across the Stars" by John Slide20XX Smith http://www.slide20xx.com and Emily Anderson http://emilyandersonak.comUntitled UE5 Shadow Game - Flashlight Testinvrse2025-03-26 | I need to name my UE5 cosmic horror game soon!
Here I am testing the multiple light levels (and battery drain) of the flashlight, along with the charging kiosk. Lots of tests with control rig IK, MetaSounds, and Lumen/MegaLights. Performance seems acceptable, but my 3090 is still pretty high end, so I worry about lower end hardware.Shadows in the Night made by Sunoinvrse2025-02-17 | Trying a spooky theme, but got something less scary, and more fun to listen to. Suno lets you generate for free with the v4 model, which so far is leagues better than the 3.5 version.Tech Art test for UE5 Shadow Horror Gameinvrse2025-02-15 | I should come up with a title for this game. Making progress on my cult chamber, and refactored the "insanity distortion" to have 5 editable characteristics, like zolly amount, camera twist, fisheye multiply, and more.Tech Art for Untitled Shadow Horror UE5 Gameinvrse2024-12-20 | Technically, I have the beginnings of a plan for this game. This is just an early snapshot of tricks I am playing with light, shadow, camera effects, post-process effects, particles, and atmospheric spookiness.
Once I decided to try "cosmic horror," the sky became the limit for trying infinite voids, dimensional rifts, growing insanity and paranoia, and other-dimensional monstrosities. Eventually there will be cultists and a whole back-story, but it would suck to have all that spoiled long before the game takes shape.
My hope is this: If it's spooky without music and sound effects, then once those get added in, this thing will be nightmare fuel.Talking with Nerdle in VRenity AIinvrse2024-12-14 | An exploration of the different experiences inside VRenity, which just launched on Steam in December 2024. This is the PC version, but there's a fully-immersive VR mode with hand-tracking, which really enhances the visuals and makes it easier to relax. A Meta Quest 2+ is required, as it uses hand-tracking.
This whole experience is powered by Chat-GPT, tuned to be a supportive friend, companion, and wellness coach. There is no limit to how much you can talk to the AI character Nerdle, or the AI horse named Gus.
For my part, I'm advocating for a free-to-try demo, but there is an unavoidable expense running GPT, so right now VRenity only has a paid version.
I think there's a public Discord to chat about features, roadmap, and bug reports. Someone remind me to link that here.

You interact with "Nerdle," an AI life coach who tries to brighten your day, and will ultimately play host to a suite of wellness apps.
This video shows off a few apps, including the Jungle Treehouse lobby, Teleport to Tranquility, and Soundbath. I made everything you see, except the ChatGPT API implementation in Unreal.Storms triumphant return to the backyard after coyote attackinvrse2024-06-14 | Plenty has happened in the month since Storm was almost killed by a coyote, and most of it has been delightful, heartwarming progress!
Here I let him explore the back yard for the first time since the attack, and rest assured, it has 8' fences and we've blocked any paths for escape. He's also fully supervised, and since the dog has too much energy, Storm only gets to go in the back while she is out for a walk.
I know this is just a normal looking video of a cat walking around, but as someone who saw him fully limp and unresponsive after having his skull crushed, it makes me smile each time I see him walking so well.
Unfortunately, he has enough dexterity to scratch at his stitches, and the other day he drew some blood. We took him in to see the vet, and they said his sutures from the brain surgery are intact, but that we still need to be careful.
This shows how much he hates wearing a bootie, but it was partially effective. Now he's back to wearing a cone of shame, until he finishes a new round of antibiotics.
There was some panic as we brought him in with the chance they'd need to do a full redo of the sutures, which likely would have been another $2-3k. But they love him at the vet, and when everything looked clear, they didn't even charge for the visit! Such good people.

This is 100% satire, poking fun on how machine-learning models are trained with positive and negative reinforcement, and how chatbots seem to end up radicalized through too much exposure to trolls on the internet.
If any of the satire goes over your head, realize that is you being too dumb to get the joke, not any flaw with the joke itself. Splatter a tomato on your own face and think about what you've done.
And to maintain the moral highground, absolutely zero AI was used in the creation of this game. No Chat-GPT, and no AI-Voice-Changers. This was the Unreal TTS plugin, doing a perfect job of sounding like a robot from the 80s.

Imagine pairing an Oculus Quest, HoloLens, or Magic Leap to an iPhone. We did!
But this was in the days of the Vive Focus, and before any AR glasses could demonstrate the potential of using the phone as a primary input method. Sigh.Voyagers UE5 Speeder Testinvrse2022-09-30 | Playing around with chaos vehicles in UE5.Project Voyager WIP UE5 Resource Scanning Particlesinvrse2022-06-12 | Tinkering with procedural particles to act like a Holographic HUD to show resource density, location, and other attributes. Hit "G" and any resource within your scan radius will light up, showing area of highest concentration as the peak in the middle.
Not doing particle ground detection right now, but it's probably needed to hit landscape contours. This was the lowest height, but other iterations have the particles towering 5m into the air. To not overwhelm the screen, there are lots of fades, like depth fade, close distance fade, and a "look at" fade when the player is not aimed towards the emitter.Project Voyager UE5 Fluid particles and Ranged Combat Testinvrse2022-04-28 | Unreal Engine 5 just made their Niagara fluid particles plug-in available, so I had to try it out!
The volumetric fluids looks gorgeous, but cause instant FPS lag and can even crash the game due to "timeout detection." So I compromised and tweaked some of the 2D fluids, which seem to perform well until there are maybe a dozen on screen at once.
Oh, and there's also Ranged Combat! Aiming down the sights, projectile physics, and an opportunity to add all kinds of particles and explosions.
This may also be the first video with player and NPC health bars, combat text, and a kind of buggy "hose" connecting the backpack to the Torch weapon
Project Voyager is a pre-alpha prototype for a future online multiplayer world, build around the HIVE blockchain. I promise to set up a Twitter and Discord some day soon. lolProject Voyager UE5 Melee Combat and AI Testinvrse2022-04-08 | Lots of progress, finally with custom character mesh and armor, improved animations, melee controls, dealing damage to and from player and bugs, dynamic navmesh, custom particles, death animations for the bugs, and more.
Definitely need UI and HUD to show health, but I'm working on ranged combat first.
It's great to be on the release version of Unreal 5.0, which solved a number of bugs from the old git version, and got my framerate back where it belongs! Our blockchain integration tests have all succeeded as well, so it looks like Project Voyager is actually going to happen. Granted it's fundamentally a crafting and exploration game, but you gotta have good combat, right?
Hmm, we should probably make a website, and a Twitter, and a Discord soon.UE5 AI Test for Untitled Blockchain MMOinvrse2022-02-19 | Made some bugs! Most of the environment is the same rock deployed by my "orbital" spawner. Thankfully Lumen makes it look beautiful, and Nanite makes it perform well.
Mostly playing with locomotion, controls, and base enemy AI, plus a chaos-physics vehicle. Third-person animations retargetted onto Epic/Microsoft Astronaut model.

The mesh emitter is pretty simple, with some scaling spheres and a little random acceleration at spawn. Linking the System Loop count to some math makes sure each particle is slightly shorter in Z than the previous ones.
The material used no texture maps, just different levels of noise, and merged the noise into a normal map using "NormalfromFunction" node. There's some panning UVs, some vector emissive glow from below, and the particle color from Niagara alters the diffuse and roughness as the lava "cools."Oculus Quest Hands Demo in UE4.25 Blueprints with Niagarainvrse2020-07-28 | Experiments with hand tracking and gesture controls.
Using joint rotations to set a custom hand pose was semi-successful. (Right Index "Point" pose to draw)
Custom Pinch events from fingertip collider overlaps works best with Index, gets worse with Middle and Ring fingers.
Custom Pinch for right hand measuring vector length from thumb to index finger is most stable, used for color picker.
Early versions used Oculus "Pinch" values, but they stopped reporting at some point, so I made my own.
For some reason I set up to paint with the right hand, but I draw with my left hand, so that was pretty silly.Invrse Reality - Custom Phone interface for VR and AR!invrse2019-12-03 | In 2017, invrse started a secret project to try and solve the biggest problems facing VR and AR. Among these were the challenge of entering text, the complexity of all-new input mechanics, and biggest of all, the disconnect you feel between the real world when donning an immersive headset.
The solution we found was to merge the smart-phone and the multi-touch interface with AR and VR headsets, taking advantage of all the inputs and gestures we have become familiar with. It unlocked even more potential than we expected, though the ever-changing landscape of headsets AND phones made it a challenge to keep pace.
Along the way we worked with some huge players in the XR industry, got some investment, and patented some cool tech. But we also didn't quite design this with a business model in mind, so it's been a tough road. Our demos are still mind blowing, so if anyone wants to try and leverage what we have built, I am open to partnerships. The Stars Between Us for SteamVR and Riftinvrse2019-08-24 | Step into VR and take part in a love story that is out of this world!
