The title for Peggy Lee’s first big solo hit for Capitol Records (co-written with husband and musical partner Dave Barbour) was inspired by a particularly good day she’d had while home pregnant with their daughter. And then, not long after baby Nicki was born, the rest of the song came to her:
“As I busied myself with housework, I began to sing a little ‘dummy’ melody, and, as the words kept popping in, I put down the vacuum or whatever and wrote them down. When it was finished, I put Nicki in her baby buggy and practically ran down to my sister’s apartment house, called up to her window and sang my song. I think she always took some pride in having been the first person to hear ‘It’s a Good Day!’”
Peggy’s July 12th, 1946 Capitol Studios recording became her 7th solo hit, and one of her most enduring signature songs.
💙 And it's a good day for losin’ the blues 🎵

The nursery rhyme “Oh Dear, What Can the Matter Be?” (also known as “Johnny’s So Long at the Fair”) dates back to the 1770s, making its way over to the United States from England not long after American independence. Peggy Lee sang her interpretation on a 1952 broadcast of her CBS Radio show, now available, along with 43 other rare gems never recorded commercially, on 'At Last: The Lost Radio Recordings.’

Peggy Lee co-wrote the eponymous theme of the 1954 film Johnny Guitar with Victor Young, “one of the most prolific and celebrated composers of film music” (Songwriters Hall of Fame).
Directed by Nicholas Ray and starring Joan Crawford, the movie was released in August and went on to became a cult classic. As part of the promotion earlier in the summer, Peggy Lee performed the song for a live television broadcast (recorded on 16mm kinescope).
It had been three years since her divorce from the man she always described as the love of her life, jazz guitar player, conductor and arranger Dave Barbour.

The fun that Peggy and @officialdeanmartin always had doing their medleys on his show was infectious. After a serious performance of “Is That All There Is?” on a November, 1969 episode of The Dean Martin Show, the mood lightened with a duet that included the Gershwins’ “I Got Rhythm” and a romance-soaked rendition of the “Beer Barrel Polka” that only these two could pull off.
💞 We’ve got the blues on the run 🎵

Lalo Schifrin’s “The Right to Love” started out as a song without lyrics called “Reflections,” released in 1964 by jazz saxophonist Stan Getz.
Later that year Peggy Lee recorded a version for Capitol Records with lyrics written by former Down Beat editor Gene Lees. Tony Bennett’s heartfelt version came out in 1965, and other artists who recorded the song include Irene Reid (with Lalo for the 1965 thriller ‘Once A Thief’), Carmen McRae and k.d. lang.
💞 The right to sigh together in the rain. And walk with heads up in the sun. And share our joy and our pain. 🎵

"Fever" is Peggy Lee's signature song and most successful hit to date. It's been featured in many films & TV shows and inspired many artist covers, including Elvis Presley & Beyoncé. This new remix with HoneyLuv fuses the fun lyrics with groove-laden rhythms.
The track, remixed by Cleveland-born DJ and producer HoneyLuv—one of house music’s fastest-rising stars—seamlessly blends deep, groove-laden rhythms with classic influences that honor the genre's roots.

Marian McPartland and Peggy Lee became friends after crossing paths performing in Chicago and New York in the 1940s and '50s. Marian is credited with helping make 'Piano Jazz' one of the most popular programs in the history of public radio. A song of hers, "Afterglow" inspired Peggy Lee to write lyrics, which she recorded under the title "In The Days Of Our Love."

Quincy was just shy of his 28th birthday when he started collaborating with a 40-year-old Peggy. Beginning with her iconic 1961 Basin Street East engagements, he went on to conduct and arrange a number of her albums. They also wrote multiple songs together, including "Happy Feet," "Train Blues," "LA Blues," and "New York City Blues." Their collaboration represented a perfect blend of artistic minds that transcended genre and created timeless musical moments.

Peggy Lee and Mel Tormé hit it off from the start. When they found out they’d be recording a duet of “The Old Master Painter” together (her 35th hit for @capitolrecordsUS), they set about writing a song for the B side. “Bless You (For the Good That’s in You)” is now out on the fourth and final installment of Peggy Lee: From the Vaults.

Holy hidden gem, Batman! When the Caped Crusader was taking over TV screens in the 1960s, Peggy Lee was inspired to co-write this playful tune with her longtime @capitolrecordsUS producer Dave Cavanaugh. Now out on Peggy Lee: From the Vaults (Vol. 4), this alternate take of "That Man" sizzles with the kind of cartoonish exclamations that would make Robin proud. Zowie! 💥

Peggy Lee recorded her @capitolrecordsUS interpretation of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" in February 1970, mere weeks after Simon & Garfunkel's original began topping the charts – and just months before the legendary folk duo parted ways. 💔

While Peggy Lee performed “Unforgettable” on her radio show in 1952, the year Capitol labelmate Nat King Cole released his album of the same name, this 1967 interpretation from Something Special: Things Are Swingin,’ was the first for a TV audience. Songwriter Irving Gordon studied violin as a child, so sharing the spotlight with a Stradivarius makes perfect sense.

In another case of Peggy Lee being the only female singer to take on a song claimed by male acts, “All Dressed Up With a Broken Heart” (1949) became her 22nd hit. She was 28, and real heartbreak was on the horizon.

In the early 1950s Peggy Lee and Mel Tormé co-hosted “TV’s Top Tunes,” a thrice-weekly program featuring a variety of musical performances.
Lyrics
On top of Old Smokey,
all covered with snow
I lost my true lover
for courting so slow
For courting’s a pleasure,
but parting is grief
And a false-hearted lover
is worse than a thief
A thief will just rob you
and take what you have
But a false-hearted lover
will lead you to your grave.
The grave will decay you
and turn you to dust
Not one boy in a hundred
a poor girl can trust
They’ll hug you and kiss you
and tell you more lies
Than cross ties on a railroad
or stars in the sky
So come you young maidens
and listen to me
Never place your affection
in a green willow tree
For the leaves, they will wither
the roots, they will die
And you’ll be forsaken
and never know why
On top of Old Smokey,
all covered with snow
I lost my true lover
for courting so slow

In her autobiography, Peggy Lee tells the story of the day she met Walt Disney:
“Sonny Burke called one day in the early 1950’s and asked if I’d like to write a score with him for Disney.
Sonny and I went out to the studios to meet the great man. Charming? Yes, he was. The first thing he said in reply to ‘Mr. Disney’ was, ‘Walt, please. Everyone calls me by my first name.’
Good heavens, how could I call this great man by his first name, but I did.”
Walt Disney saw magic in Peggy Lee's talent. She wasn't just a singer for 'Lady and the Tramp' - she wrote songs (with Sonny Burke), shaped characters, and helped craft the film's heart. One of the first artists Disney trusted with real creative control, Peggy Lee helped transform a cartoon into musical storytelling.
