Are you starting to see any patterns in the best performers vs the ones that aren't doing as well? I think there are so many different designs that it might be hard to tell, but there are certainly some similarities but we need to get the rest of these incredible ducts tested and then when we're finally through, we'll have to score each test print using a detailed marking system so that we have an objective way of seeing which ducts have done the best so that we can then move 5 or 6 of them to a round of final testing to declare the winners. I also have some very special prizes in mind for the winners as well, something that is one of a kind and is significant and I am actually pretty excited about it!

What makes a great high speed 3D printer duct? By looking at all sorts of different methods of cooling we should be able to understand the problems better and also find out which ducts do well on each test so that we can take those ideas and then adapt them to any 3D printer new or old. It took a bit longer to get setup than expected, I thought I was going to be able to use the spools of Bambu filament that I bought just for these tests, but it turns out that I needed HF filament for this printer. I bought the grey Creality HF instead which I've used before, but never on this printer, so it took a bit to get it dialed in.
We're running the Cliffhanger, the Bridge Burst The Shuriken and of course the one and the only Benchy (Standard Version). As we get deeper into the competition we'll be able to run more tests as we narrow down the top performers to a smaller group. Ideally we'll do smoke testing, CFD simulations and we'll also use the Thermal camera to really see what's happening.

We're finally getting the showdown underway, we have 2 big circular ducts that look incredible and the could both perform really well, but they both have big problems. I could just leave them as-is, but that isn't right, these took quite a bit of time to design, the least I could do is try to come up with a way to fix them so they have a fighting chance in the next video.

I've tested a lot of printers, and most of the time I end up having to make changes because they don't quite work perfectly, sometimes they've not anywhere close. That is definitely not the case this time, this printer worked right out of the box and it has so much more than anything else I've seen, not to mention that it is incredibly robust. QIDI has taken the feedback from the community and given us a printer that meets as many of our needs as possible. Printing isn't just for toys anymore, 3D printing is being used to make real parts and even functional prototypes at work.
I think my favorite features about this printer is the nozzle wiping system, but I also like that they went with all 10mm rods and screws, there is a lot like so let me show you just about everything I can in the video!

As much as I love to use my 3D printers, there are some limitations, one is the size of the printers, another is the material limitations, and the last is the cost of the materials. Sometimes it doesn't make sense to 3D print something, instead it should be cut using a CNC or a laser.
I've had quite a few offers to review lasers, but they were all missing what I thought were important features. In my shop, I work close to my machines so I need to be able to breathe that air, and from a fire-safety standpoint, if I walk away for a minute, I don't want to risk anything catching fire. So all of those previous lasers would have to be used outside to avoid the risk. That's not the case anymore! This laser is built to address those issues and there are some other super handy features as well and after using this machine for over a month now, I only want to use it even more. Those changes have made all of the difference. I'll show you some ideas of what you can do with this laser, and some of the materials you can cut and engrave with it in this video so that if you're in the market for a laser, you can see what it can do and can decide if it is the right choice for you. I also go over a few little things with this laser that could be improved or possibly have been already since mine was a prototype.

The newest filament dryers look great, they seem like they have some useful features and they're far safter than the old ones, but something isn't quite right with these new ones. Where is the humid air going? In my mind, to get the most out a dryer, it needs to replace the humidified air with dryer air from the room and as it heats, it can take on more moisture and then the cycle repeats, but with these new dryers, they're just about all sealed up, so what happens to that air?

I don't know about you, but I'm often skeptical of new products, it's hard to know if they're bending the truth and getting us to buy with their marketing tactics. The Dyson fan design with the Air Amplification technology seems to me to be one of those cases. It looks pretty, but it's very expensive. They market it as a Bladeless fan, but it has blades in it, they're just in the base. Still Dyson has a pretty good reputation, so maybe it's not a gimmick and there is some real technology in there that we can adopt for 3D printing or possibly for making our own fans.
We'll do the trash bag tests, we'll also do smoke tests and dive into the principles behind the design to see if it makes sense, and then we'll decide if it's worthy of using on some future projects.

We are still on a mission to look to any any all options to learn what makes the best part cooling duct of all, and using simulation software makes a lot of sense. There is only one problem... I didn't know how to use it, and the tutorials were not very well suited to the application, so after some research and a lot of failures, I finally came to a simple method that's easy to do for just about anyone with a CAD software.
I took it one step further as well by showing the pretty big difference between simulating with and without a part in place and we also tested using Rheoscopic fluid like the last video to see how close the simulation was compared to the actual flow both with any without a part.
This is so easy now that I do this for every duct I design and because of this method I have several more ideas for even more advanced approaches to duct design for 3D printing, so there is lots of value I think.

In one of my previous videos, I attempted to see the flow better by adding some sparkles to water, and while it did work... a little bit, it was messy and each tests was different because the sparkles were not distributed well and they settled to the bottom. This is the good stuff we're testing out and there is no comparison, not to mention that you can pick the color you want to use. The red looked amazing too, but the camera didn't like it much, otherwise I would have used it in more of the video.
I hope you found this video entertaining and fun and look out for future testing videos where we experiment with different methods of visualizing flow, like using a Thermal Camera, or using Dry Ice, or using Schlieren imaging, or well... you'll have to wait and see!

So we're clear, Triangle labs has only sent the nozzle kit, I don't accept payment for reviews. I also requested this nozzle to test out.
I've had this nozzle waiting for too long, so I finally gave it some attention along with my QIDI Q1 Pro, which has been performing really well for me.
CHT Tech makes a big difference, but is it really that much, and can we get a CHT style nozzle to work with the QIDI printers? QIDI uses a different length of nozzle from other companies.
Finally a company that posts real specs that you don't need to fight to try to meet. I ran the tests with low expectations, and to my surprise...

Wow, this did not go like I had planned, getting smoke into a 3D printer seemed at first like it was going to be a walk in the park. After spending way too much time with the lighting and the settings... and finding a way to create ULTRA FOG, I was able to get something that worked. We also did some unorthodox testing with sparkles in this video, I think it may just be my new go-to for the simplest way to test airflow to visualize it.

In this video I'm sharing what I've learned over the past few weeks of creating custom 3D printer part fan ducts and testing them out. At first, few models were hard, the next batch were a little annoying, and finally after many many models, it's actually pretty easy and something I should have learned to do a long time ago. Some of these tools aren't used often because they just don't have a useful purpose, but in the case of these tools, I think there are a lot of uses. Now that we have metal 3D printing as an option, I can see using the method I've shown in the video for exhaust pipes, for manifolds, custom ductwork for HVAC systems, of course lots of 3D printer applications as well. I have to say that these just look amazing as well, not to mention that they're super lightweight, there is no filler, all of the form also the function.

Good part cooling is critical if you have a high speed printer. If we try to blow out a candle do you do it with your mouth wide open or do you try to position the air exactly where you need it? The answer should be clear, you need to place the air where you need it, and I believe that the same goes for part cooling. Simply cooling the part isn't good enough, we need to place the cool air and even better we need to place the air and also give that air somewhere to go. In this video, we'll explore these concepts by testing no duct, vs 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 ducts to see which perform the best.
This is a project that needs the community's helps, I've included the parts and the template if you think you can do a better job!

Faster isn't always better, but sometimes there is a big leap in technology and faster is better and that leap leads to better products and more innovation and so it continues.
This is the FLSUN T1, the little brother to the S1, there aren't too many bells and whistles on this printer, and personally I like a printer to be fairly straight forward so that I can upgrade it myself and makes adjustments easily as well. So is this printer the next leap in 3D printing tech, or is it all hype? We're going to do a deep dive to see if we can reach those stats on their website and then we'll even take the printer to the next level by installing 2 of our own upgrades to see if that helps as well.

Have you ever tried to 3D print TPU, how about printing a shoe, in this video we find a way to 3D scan my butt so that I can finally get some relief on those longer bike rides. I've never had a comfortable bike saddle/seat and I wanted to see if using TPU to make my own which is custom fitted to my body would do any better than one that's store bought.
TPU is a pretty amazing material and it turns out that to get the properties we're looking for with TPU there are quite a few settings that we can adjust. We can modify the infill itself, but we can also adjust the line with, line width has a big impact on how flexible the final TPU piece will be.
This video goes over all of the steps so that you can try this yourself, you just need an old seat to start with, any color of spray paint, a 3D printer and some patience. If you're better at modelling than I am, you'll see even better results that I did.
There is a lot more to learn about bike saddle design and there is a lot more to experiment with to achieve the ultimate results which not only apply to seats, but to shoes, sandals, helmets, really anything you wear.
I'm working on leveling this up and it won't be long before we have the ultimate solution!

I have nothing against simple designs, often times they're far quicker to produce and if they work, well that's the important part. I do like to constantly look for improvements, and I think most of us look for not just function but also how something looks. If it looks good we're more likely to buy it, want it, make it etc. If it looks good and doesn't function, well that's no good, so it needs to function first and then we can focus on the looks.
The inside corner has been something I've wanted to test for a long time, I've often thought that the fillet is strong, and I've seen stress testing on metals, and we use circular cutouts in wood as well which have proven to be quite durable connections which have stood the test of time, so do these same techniques apply directly to 3D printing. I would think that they should, but there is only one way to find out and that is to print some parts and test them out.

This is an idea I had a long time ago and really it's not my idea, it's taking what we already know from the structural steel industry and finding a way to apply it to 3D printing. With printing we have the advantage of being able to make any shape we'd like, with steel, it's possible, but hard to do on a big scale. I beams are another good example of how to make the ideal beams with minimum deflection and max load capacity. These are great if you understand the direction of loading well, if not, a square tube is another great option and it's most similar to what we've done here in this set of tests.
I added in the Black Basic PETG because I was curious, but it was not charted with the rest since it was not part of the main experiment. It is a good clue to the performance differences between the different materials and how layer adhesion and the flexibility of the different materials affects their performance.

In this video we're testing more than 3D printed connections to try to get a better sense of just how much abuse a 3D printed connection can take in comparison to other more well-known materials. We're testing OSB, we're testing Plywood, Solid Spruce, and Solid Maple.
The test is focused on Torque or Twisting the parts to get them to fail, and the results for quite a few of the tests took my by surprise.

If you're curious how strong any of the 3D printed connections really are, we were able to get some pretty telling results.
I believe that it is possible to print strong parts which can take the abuse if we choose the right connections and materials, we have a long way to go still to come up with the ultimate connection that is superior in every way and works well for 3D printing, this video helps to guide us in the right direction to help make even better choices so that we can prevent failure and end up with a successful big project in the end.

I can't wait until we can 3D print with metal at home, but until that time comes, there are some other options out there that are worth a closer look.

In the previous several videos we created quite a few different connections for joining 3D printed parts together and none of them used any fasteners or adhesive. In this video we're going to create a connection with fasteners, except, it's no ordinary connection with fasteners, it'll have a very unusual shape which provides lots of contact area, aligns itself in multiple directions simultaneously, and it is is going to be pulled together tight.

I've always known that the part cooling is not that good on the Bambu, but it's a really good printer that gives me almost no trouble at all, so I can't really complain. What I can do it improve an already great printer, so that's the goal for this video. How can we take the Part cooling to the next level. I have an upgrade that I requested to be sent to me from BIQU and they were nice enough to send it to me, it is called the Panda Jet and it's meant to be a simple swap to completely change the part cooling on this printer.
When I see these images of air flowing in perfect streams, I normally look the other way, but I saw that it had 4 ports set on a diagonal to the axis and it seemed like a pretty good idea, and I was also curious about MJF 3D printing and I wanted to see what it looked like.
Before we do anything in this video we need to take some time to understand the problem and make some test prints to that we have something to compare against, and for that I'm using PLA and PETG-CF and I'm also using the Ender 3 V3 from my previous testing video.

Sometimes what we think will happen vs reality aren't the same. Ever since testing my first CoreXY printers, I thought it would be the end of the bed slinger and we'd see a quick transition to a better format. For smaller bed slingers, it makes quite a bit of sense to me, smaller printers have less mass to move around, they're nice and portable, cheaper and simpler to build, but when we start trying to increase the bed size, we have all of that mass to move around at high speed. Better firmware helps quite a bit, but the issue still remains. Can we move a large mass of the bed and still have the same results as a CoreXY Printer? That's what we're trying to find out.
I have a soft spot for this type of printer, and I prefer how open these printers are compared to the enclosed printer, it's just so much easier to see what's happening on a bed slinger.
So let's find out how good this Ender 3 V3 Metal Frame Printer really is!

In the previous video we looked at several different ways to improve the dovetail connection by adapting it and taking advantage of the 3D printing process. In this video, we're going to see if we can create 2 completely new connections which are both inspired by some of the best woodworking connections. I've been on a mission to use 3D printing to upgrade to fix and to repair as many of my tools as possible, and when it comes to tool repair, 3D printing isn't always what comes to mind first. If we want something stiff, that's precise it's better to machine it from metal and pay what it takes. But maybe it's possible to replace parts with the right filament, every day there are new and unique filaments coming out that push the boundaries of what we can do with 3D printing.
Having recently tested the QIDI Q1 and having good success with it, I went back to their website and I found that they sell a filament called ABSGF25 and it's not like anything I've seen before, so I contacted QIDI to see if they'd send me a spool to test out... I didn't specify the color, so they sent green, and that's perfectly fine, it showed up really well on camera.
All of the prints in this video were made on the QIDI Q1 Pro, it's still printing very well it's at least on-par with the X1C for print quality, though it doesn't have a color option at the moment.

In the previous video I showed a brief segment showing this connection that I created, which is my take on an old and wonderful connection which has been used in Woodworking since the dawn of Woodworking. Having made many a dovetail connection by hand in my days as a Woodworker, I thought it was a connection worthy of some attention in 3D printing as well. In this video I show you the process of how to create a variety of different levels of sliding dovetail connection in Fusion 360 and of course we 3D print them and see how they come together.

This is the 5th video on this printer, we're nearly there with the upgrades to get this printer printing like a dream, and one thing that's been bothering me is the amount of flex in the posts and vibration I was seeing during printing. There have been a lot of complaints about how square the posts are to the bed, so I thought it was worth a closer look to see if we can fix both problems at once.
The goal was to come up with something that looks good, add the rigidity that we need and also allows some adjustment.

The QIDI Q1 Pro has been my go-to printer lately for high quality parts and it has that advantage of being able to reliably print higher-temperature materials, and since I've been using it so much, it could use an upgrade or two so we can get even more out of it.

TPU Is an incredible material for certain applications, like bumpers, clamp pads, and lathe belts.... what? Lathe Belts? Well maybe yes or maybe no, that's what this video aims to find out.
The more I use TPU the more I want to use it, and now that they have High Flow TPU it isn't as much of a pain to wait for those prints to finish. The TPU I've been using is limited to 3.6mm³/s, which for a fast printer, is quite slow. Luckily we don't lose all of the print time since we still have fast moves and accelerations.
Using TPU for a lathe belt was just an idea that I had to try and save money and I thought it would be interesting to see if the properties of TPU lines up with what was necessary for a lathe belt.

This is a solid printer, and the more I use it, the more I like using it. That said, there is a problem with the spool holder, it's too flexible and acts like a spring. When the printer vibrates just right, the spool holder bounces around and the spool will come off. So our mission for this video is to fix that and we're going to do even better than fixing.

I'm pretty picky when I agree to test a printer out, I've worked with Creality and Bambu, but I had heard good things about QIDI so I thought it was worth a closer look. They happened to have a brand new product that combines high speed printing with accuracy and... one more feature that even expensive printers don't have. That particular feature was going to be a pretty big benefit to me because of the types of parts I like to print.
I went into this test like I usually do, optimistic, and normally I end up finding a series of problems that cause me to have to make several more follow up videos. I didn't have that experience with this printer. Overall I was impressed. There were a few small things that could be improved, that's true for anything. I was impressed the most with the build-quality and the steel frame, but the parts look like they belong in a far more expensive printer.
I hope this video helped you and I hope that if you're in the market for a printer that you can get the best price. I don't know how many early-bird priced printers there are... hopefully enough for everyone that wants to buy a printer right away!

This is the 3rd video now on this printer, but in this video we come up with a working solution for the bed vibration issues we were having which produced print quality problems. Not all Ender 3 printers seemed to have this issue, but with the small rods and a little bit of time and wear this will become a problem on all printers and I thought it was a good idea to be prepared with a good solid solution that was easy to do for just about anyone.

This one was suggested by a viewer and it's a question I've had for several years, does the friction inside the tube cause the extruder to produce an inconsistent result? Before starting the testing, I was pretty sure that with such a tight bend in the tube and with the tube in the cable chain, the extruder must be having trouble. But if that were the case, why would Creality design it this way, is it a bad decision or do they know something that we don't?

Through a twist of fate (Thanks Martin) I started to post my designs on Maker World and to my surprise, I started to generate points quickly. Having already gone through the process of redeeming points on Printables, I thought that it couldn't hurt to try out Makerworld as well. I had no expectations and I thought it would be about the same amount of cost to me as Printables was. You're not along if you're having trouble getting a good first layer on your K1 or K1 Max printer. With the Max, we found out that with such a fast heating cycle, and the larger and thin bed we're getting a lot of warpage, but we also found that the warpage didn't stop right away, the bed changed shape and then began to change back. Most of the settling back happened within 10 minutes but it continued for as long as 20 minutes.
In this video I wanted to show you a way to pre-heat automatically so that you don't need to think about it.
**Special note: The Max takes only 5 minutes to reach 100C, it's far faster than most other printers, adding a bit of time back to this heating cycle is a good idea and will give you the best results with the thickness of aluminum plate we're dealing with.

If you want to get the most out of your printer and start to explore other options in automation and calibration and just plain FUN with your Creality printer, you'll want to root it. It allows you to easily access the printer through the Fluidd or Mainsail UIs, it lets you monitor them wirelessly, send to them wirelessly though quite a few different slicers (I like Orca, but Prusa is another good option)
Where it really comes in handy is allowing you to make adjustments that suit your setup. You can install KAMP to get a faster probe and better first layer, you can create custom GCODES.

The K1 being so short and not having the space above the extruder was causing a problem for the cable chain. It was getting pinched between the extruder and the inside top rim of the printer, it also would pinch at the back. I've had the top raise up and move around on me, I've had the chain break apart at the back, I've had the chain bend and deform the back mounting bracket as well. With this simple fix, we're able to prevent those issues from happening.

Creality sent me this printer to test out, they don't pay me, or tell me what I can and can't say, as you will find out when you watch the video.
I have a series of videos planned for this BIG printer because in the end, it is a very capable printer. the K1 series of printers are pretty good, and I've been having a great time with my smaller K1 printer.
When these printers were first released, there were a few issues with the extruder design. Those issues have since been resolved and we're getting good repeatable results now. That said, are there any other lingering issues that haven't been fixed yet?
The feature that I have been looking forward to using the most is the LiDAR, and the automatic bed scanning. On a big printer, the bed tends to be warped and having the ability to scan with a higher precision helps to get that first layer just right, in this video, we'll go through that and find out if the LiDAR scanner really does work well and we'll review a little about how it works as well.
***ALSO - Yes the K1 does fit inside of the K1 MAX, that's how big it is and that size really does come in handy for some of those really large prints you don't want to split up.

This is a follow up to the review video where we discovered the problem with what looked to be an extrusion issue, there was also a problem with too much 'slop' in the bearings below the bed for the Y axis movement.
In this video, we'll go through the process of finding the source of the problem by taking things apart in our usual style and then we'll run through a series of tests to prove or dis-prove the theorys.
I've printed with PETG, ABS, TPU, CF, ABS, ASA and PC, and I've never had this issue before. It seems to be related somehow to speed, but also possibly to the material, PETG seems to have more of this issue occurring, but I also can see the problem on PLA but to a lesser extent.
The KE runs with a Sprite style of DD extruder, and it looked to me to be a little under-engineered for the job, I thought that would be a good place to start...

I started with an Anet A8, which wasn't good, it 'worked' but not well, the Ender 3 V2 came along and I bought it, and I was really happy with it, it was a great machine for tinkering with and learning how a printer works, since then lots of new fast printers have come out and they blow the old generation of printers out of the water. Those new printers usually run a Core XY setup or a Delta, so how could a simple X Y Z cartesian setup possibly compete? Well I'm not convinced that it can, but the price is right so I wanted to try it out to see how well it performed and if there were any issues.
Some of the new printers are pretty expensive, so if the printer performs well, and the price is half or less than a Core XY, it might make sense to go that route it if does the job.
In this video we take everything apart, have a look inside, and go just about as far as we can to try and understand what's going on with this printer, how it works, as well as the good points, the bad points and some things I want to see in future versions as well.
This is a long video, because there was a bit of a struggle and I wanted to show it, hopefully you enjoy and found the difficulty I had entertaining.

I've seen some attempts at creating enclosure or frames, and they are lacking in a few ways. One is that they don't pull the joint together, they're simply bolted. The end result is something that will shake and wobble, not good enough. There are other designs which require lots of hardware. There are also lots of designs which require supports. I'd like to try to do away with all or at least most of that to try to find the best and strongest connection for joining two large 3d prints together.
It's great to have the big printers, that helps a lot to minimize the joints, unfortunately they're not big enough and we need to join pieces together.
Gluing a connection is a good option, but how do you pull the joint together tight while the glue sets? do you really want to rely only on the glue, or would you rather have both a mechanical connection and a bonded connection as well?
I hope to answer those questions and more as I show off one of the oldest types of connections I can think of and we find out just how strong it is compared to other connections.

3D Prints look cheap, and feel cheap. In this video, we'll address this by throwing a few solid techniques at the prints while also using 3D printing for what it excels at, and using traditional hand-crafting methods and bringing the two together to see if we can make something that looks and feels like a quality product.
A shout out to @Willofthemaker for sharing his techniques for making prints that look like the ones shown in the video.
It isn't enough to just 3D print a part solid. First we need to pick the right material. If we try to use a low-quality filament, we're going to see a lot of variation in the diameter, and that will translate into more visible layer lines. Picking a quality filament is the first and one of the most important factors.
We also want to print HEAVY, when you tap on a print, it should feel solid, not hollow, it's a small thing, but it helps quite a bit.
The color of the print does make a difference. It's a matter of preference in a way, but there are some colors that look more pro, and those are darker colors. Light and bright colors look cheap, like kids toys.

I see a lot of testing videos, some of them are useful to compare materials against each other, but they're not as useful when you want to apply them to real designs. If we want to protect something, should we use ABS? How about PETG? Or Maybe you're the PC type. I have an okay sense about each of the materials, but I couldn't tell you which material was best to protect expensive equipment, and which material could take continued abuse and not just break after one drop.
This video is dedicated to doing realistic dop testing to see if we can get some real answers to those questions so we have a better idea of how to design 3d printed parts, and that we also have a sense about which materials perform the best under which conditions.
In the previous video, we tested only PETG, it has a good reputation for being flexible, but it also has this other very strange property of becoming brittle and fracturing at a certain point. In this video we're going to see if we can figure out the right mix of flex and strength for that material so we can use it and have the confidence that it'll do the job.
Which material do you think will perform the best? Check out the video for all of the details, it was a lot of fun, and I learned quite a bit. Let's just say that it isn't all about the size, there is more to it than that.

We had a pretty epic but funny fail, I made a set of prints for a friend looking to make his Yaseu FT-891 Radio portable. I found a nicely designed set and printed them for him and then went and sent him a short video showing that they were flexible so we were pretty confident that they'd work well. Well he arrived and we were about to mount them, and he accidently broke one by twisting it, like I had in my video to him. It made me wonder if this was the right solution to use on an expensive radio and if I should modify the design to make it stronger.
I came up with a few different options but thought about using a technique that I had used in woodworking called steam bending, aligning the 'grain' of the plastic to be continuous.
Each of these prints were made from the same spool of filament, extremely dry and printed with no fans. The original model which broke was printed with normal fans and the door was open on the printer. I forgot to mention that part in the video.
Check out the video for all of the details, it was a lot of fun and I learned quite a bit on this one.

When I first watched the video from Bambu, I was really excited about the possibility of reducing motor noise. As I watched it a second time, I started to ask a few questions. The main one was, are they printing something? How close is the mic to the printer, was the sound adjusted in the video to accentuate the difference. I make videos, and all of these things are possible. I wasn't sure if they were making a real print, so that was one of my main questions, if we make a real 3d print, at fairly high speeds do we see such a big difference in sound, and what other sounds are in play here. Well we did a deep dive. This video and all of the testing took quite a bit more time that I was expecting, and I think we ended up with some interesting results.
Since we were already testing, I wanted to compare against the Creality K1. I know that when I record audio, I cannot have either printer running to avoid background noises, so I didn't think they were too much different in sound levels, but that wasn't exactly true, I just wasn't paying close attention to it.
Well I hope you enjoy the video and if you like Graphs, this is a good video for you. If you don't.... well I added some arrows and color and big letters, so I tried at least.
