Checking out forgotten trails and a Uranium mine. PHARRAOH 2023-07-03 | I enjoy hanging out with my friend Joe, he reminds me of things in my life, by telling me things from his life. We have done much, seen much and hopefully will see much more. We NEVER know when this time out, will be our last time out. People tire of the trail, tire of the hassles and become land locked at home, rarely getting out and losing face to face contact with friends. It just happens. I like to think, I'll continue and keep going until I find my fate on the trail somewhere, of in some gully, canyon or river. We don't just wake up one day and say, "hey, this is going to be my last time out, or my last time getting together with my friend", It just happens and one day we ALL, will look back and be able to pinpoint the last time you were out together. But I can feel the power in me diminishing, my concentration dulling, my time is coming. It feels very strange to feel time catching up to me! We come into this world and have a limited time, only so much time. Out of this, I've done the best I could, seen the most, experience the most, experienced the most and greatest variety of people I could have. It has been a really good run with some incredible people and some real magic! I am NOT a proud person, as I believe pride is one of our downfalls, that lead us off track, but I am a grateful man! Grateful of the parents that raised me,, the options they set in play for me and each and every friend I have made along the way. It was them/you, who I directed my choices off and pulled me in the directions I chose' I may have never became rich but I have found so many pots of gold in my life you'd not believe. I am rich in my own way. My head if full of wonderous stories and magic. I have shared it with thousands. Yes, there was always a better way, a more peaceful and humane way. but making the right decision is not always easy. Koronberg ren fair 2023 PHARRAOH 2023-06-26 | This fair has been going for a long time and it's lease is up this year, may have been it's last. I hope not, as I have many friends who both work it and frequent it, when its going. I use to work it at the archery booth, as well as the Devore and the Santa fe dam fair. I have been going to fair since about 1994 I believe. Much has changed, due to the world around us forcing change. But, there are those of us who remember the incredible times that were had at fair and the awesome friends we have made over the decades. As parents, we need to keep in mind, what is being fed to our kids, physically and mentally, has a huge influence on what they will do and become as adults! If you fail to support and show/teach them new (or old and forgotten) things that will put them on a track to discover things they never knew and can expand on, new territories in their mind may never come to surface and take then to unknown destinations of what they could do/be. Antler carving PHARRAOH 2023-04-27 | I found an antler and made this carving. I collect certain odd pieces of roots, woods, ricks etc and make things out of them. I sometimes sell them or give them away or maybe just put them on a self. One of my personal favorite items that has come from things collected in a cool lamp I made almost a decade back. I use it daily and it always reminds me of the East Fork and my adventure's. I also show a stone face I saw in a rock in the riverbed, which to me, resembled the profile of a great chief. I also show a manzanita root I found and stashed off the Baldy Road to one day pick up and make a snake, I then found the stone head while backpacking with an old friends named Dave. We were in Mineral King and headed back to the trail head after covering many miles and catching literally over 100 fish. He was ahead of me by about 30; and I saw him look down to his left but keep moving. I then go to that area and saw a piece of stone perfectly shaped like a rattler. I snatching it right up and Dave turned to walk back but saw me and said, did you just pick up a stone snake head? Exploring off trail PHARRAOH 2023-04-24 | Back when I was a kid, my mom baby sat for many people over the years and at one time, there was 8 kids that were practically part of our family. Ronny Lemke, best friend for a long time, like brothers, his sister Sandra, Mike Robirds, (the train riding king) Kevin Montagrande, he had a rad action Jackson and planet of the apes' collections. Ricky Henrey, he had a mead telescope with a sun lens, it was rad. Ilene hoole and her brother Mark, Blackfoot Indian mom, Mark burnt his room down one day., Christine, her mom was killed in a car crash on Carbon Canyon, we never saw her or her borthers again after that dark day. Dianne her mom moved, and we lost contact. and Mike and Danny Lane, they lived 2 streets over. I guess they moved as well. Anyway, these kids would get dropped off between 5am and 6 am every weekday to go to the bus stop with my brother and I to go to school. There were others that would join the group, then leave when they moved or something but these kids here, were a steady part of my life for well over a decade, some many years beyond that. As we grew up. our lives took different paths, but I have never had friends like these again. To think, some of these named kids were only in my life a couple short years but at a focal point in my life that has such draw, that It returns regularly when I am not distracted by the daily grind. What pulls me, or us back? Do all guys have the same hard wiring that causes this? Or, is it something inside of me? And, if, it is just me, is it due to some head trauma I had at 16 years old when in a coma from a car crash? I do not know what exactly happened with all these kids, what became of them of where they ended up but I do know I miss them all, just as family. Specially Ronny, he was like a brother. What happened to make him lose contact? When I was hit, I lost all memory and what returned over the years, has incredible detail and imprinted so deeply, it seems like yesterday. FOR those of you who know me, you can verify this by leaving a comment of something you recall me remembering and the great detail of my descriptions of that occurrence. I do not know if my memory is (in spite of my accident or if it because of it), meaning that somehow the jolt activated to connection in my head to store it and classify it so, precise, I can call upon it at any time I choose. It is all a mystery, but the biggest mystery is, did I piss off or offend all my childhood friends beyond saving the friendship and do not remember that part? Or did they all just sort of fade away? I thought we were tight friends, just like my high school buddies Doug Young, (who was with me when I was hit) or Wayne Eklund. They too stopped contact, even though I sent Doud a message, he has never got back to me/ It is a mystery without any answer. I am seriously haunted by my past. Was it real, or just in my head?But the real question is, what takes me here, again and again?

Domingo Bastanchury and his wife, Maria, were Basque immigrants who came to this area in 1870, and immediately bought land in the Fullerton hills for sheep herding. The Bastanchury family acquired more wealth during the oil boom of the 1920s, but their ranch company went bankrupt during the 1930s. At the peak of this family’s success, its holdings were so extensive that all three railroads – the Union Pacific, the Santa Fe and the Pacific Electric -- ran spur lines to the ranch house.An immigrant boy without education who grew up at Aldudes, Basses-Pyrenees, France, came to Orange County in 1860 and built up a property near Fullerton which became the largest citrus grove in the world.Domingo Bastanchury was a French Basque rancher, born in the little town of Altubes, in the heart of the Pyrenees mountains, in March, 1838. In 1859 he sailed around South America’s Cape Horn to the present Orange county and became a sheep and cattle herder. He brought them over Signal Hill and into Fullerton. Beginning in 1885 he began purchasing large tracts of land, first for his herds, then for citrus cultivation, and finally for oil drilling. At one time, the Bastanchury family owned over 4,000 acres of land in Fullerton and surrounding areas. In the early 20th century, the Bastanchury Ranch (later re-named Sunny Hills Ranch) was the largest orange grove in the world.The first laborers on the Bastanchury Ranch were Native Americans. As the United States policy toward Native Americans became more restrictive, Native Americans (TONGVE & CHUMASH) were replaced by Chinese labor (Until the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1904), followed by Japanese labor (Until the Alien Land Law of 1913), and finally Mexican labor.Mexican laborers on the Bastanchury Ranch lived in “citrus towns” that were segregated from the dominant/Anglo community. One was called Mexicali and the other was called Tiajuana. During the Great Depression, whole citrus towns were evacuated and deported back to Mexico, so as to provide unemployed Anglos with jobs. This historical reality is described at length in the book Decade of Betrayal: Mexican Repatriation in the 1930s by Francisco E. Balderrama and Raymond Rodriguez. According to scholar Gilbert Gonzales, author of Labor and Community: Mexican Citrus Worker Villages in a Southern California County, 1900-1950, these "citrus towns" were pervasive throughout Orange County in the 20th century, and they evolved into the present-day “barrios”.When this area was the center of the Bastanchury Ranch, the lake was just a low place that gathered water which the Bastanchury Ranch took their service animals to. The ranch had many windmills with pretty easy access to the water table in those days. The water was needed for the Bastanchury orchards which in the 1920s was the biggest in the world. (It was called a ranch because before oranges, lemons and walnuts, the Bastanchury family raised sheep. Bastanchury brought their Basque culture with them.) It was probably wind mills that supplemented the rain water that filled this lake back then. It really isn’t a natural area for a lake in that there’s no creek feeding it.Bastanchury Water company was the last holdings of the Bastanchury family. And they eventually sold that off. It wasn’t that long ago that Bastanchury Water trucks were constant reminders of what was at one time synonymous with Fullerton. The final owners of the water company are gone too. Only the name remains to be bought and sold, as if the name was a product. When the trucks were seen about town, the water came from a well next to one of Fullerton’s municipal wells on Pioneer, near Gilbert. But even the Fullerton pumps are abandoned. The only thing left is The Bastanchury House. It is comparable in size to the Muckenthaler mansion but in use by a family today. In 2004, The city decided to empty and dredge the old lake to "improve it" This was 19 years ago and it's NEVER been the same! The only remnants of the old times are a few original trees, a small patch of reeds and a handful of old fly fisherman working the banks and telling stories of the old days.
San Gabriel Mountains Valley Forge Campground PHARRAOH 2023-04-04 | The ban of the closed Bob cat fire area expired at midnight the night before we dropped in. So, we are most likely some of the first to see the area and camp the site. There is water flowing everywhere. It is beautiful. The trail is blocked in numerous places with downed trees and the stream crossing are many to get to the site. The rocks are slippery and the current strong. Use trekking poles of a hiking stick. We all have fire permits; we took the online safety test and registered. NO GREEN SCREN WAS USED IN THE FILMONG OF THIS VIDEO. We didn't see another human. A few squatch and a herd of chupacabra ran thorough camp but what's new, right. The pack I used was made custom and here is the info how to contact the maker. It is an AWESOME PACK. Blue Jay Campground Santa Ana Mountains PHARRAOH 2023-03-06 | I had a camp invite posted for about 1.25 months and people were all set to go but the road, the entire section of mountains it was to be held at is closed due to snow. Knowing I and the others had all been packed and had bought supplies, I improvised and chose a new place to hold the campout. Some of the guys that were to attend didn't show, but others who were not planning to attend the west fork, did show up for this one. We had a great time and always do. Falcon Trail hike Santa Ana Mountains PHARRAOH 2023-03-06 | If you go, please carry a small trash bag with you and pick up any and all the trash you can on route. The trash, graffiti and destruction of terrain is the reason so many of these beautiful places have been lost or closed to the public. It is a beautiful place and if you squint your eyes and think about time, you can almost see the native people walking around, hear them talk and laugh.

So, I had to improvise and out of the open and available places within reason of the drive, I chose the BlueJay camp and will be up there from Friday afternoon till Sunday afternoon. I only got rain and wind, The wind blew in from the head of my tarp and in a few minutes, I was .25" deep in a bathtub.Now, if you're looking to backpack with hammocks, do not waist your money and time on sleeping pads, they slip and slide all over and cold spots will make for a rough night. There is one KLYMIT Hammock V Sleeping Pad, but I've never tried it. In my opinion, you'll NEED an under quilt. As for an over quilt, you can use a good lite sleeping back if you have one, just leave it unzipped and only the first 2' at the foot sipped to use as a foot box. This will make it easy to get in and cover and not slip down over and over. The under quilt keeps you warm from below. If sleeping in heavy rain and wind, you'll need a large tarp with doors to close off the foot and head sections. an over quilt is a sleeping bag with no head section and no zipper, basically and are much lighter as a rule. There are pros and cons for hammocks, same for tents and bivis. Each has its great points and bad. You take the good, you take the bad. The record has been broken 3 times since then, now at 3.75 pounds. We didn't have any luck, I believe the water is still just a bit too cold to begin their spawn but any day that will change and I'll be back!

Please have a little respect for those of us putting it together, FOR YOU, and others to enjoy. Bring a patch kit, as flats are always a possibility. cheap kit at Walmart under 7 bucks. Ill most likely be in the lot about 2 or so Friday. water too fast and muddy to fish. Write down some nearly lost skill you know of the outdoors kind and teach it to us. I will do the same. Let's keep these skills known and in use for another few generations.

I will soon be posting a camp out invite to this same camp and it is reachable on foot at 6 miles in on the road alongside the river or by bike, skateboard, roller skates, unicycle, stilts or even pogo stick. It is a gated road and driving is not an option unless your handicap and get the rangers to help you with this. It is something YOU must look up and do on your own. if you choose skateboards, heads up, there are huge metal slabs in the road at multiple places, just where you would be doing about 20 mph coming down and they are 1" thick x at least 16' long and slick with water flowage. Searching for missing hiker Crystal Lake area PHARRAOH 2023-01-25 | I returned to check different routes and with the snow thaw, see area that may have been covered. This was on Tuesday the 24th and the cafe was closed, no other hikers in the entire area. It was strange to find the entire bowl / campground area that way. A little eerie in a way! But as beautiful as ever and in the end, I did run into one little friend who was happy to see me and I as him. If you have some time and decide to pick up where I left off, leave your route with someone who knows the area, let them know where your parked, what your wearing, the colors, ca- ca- colors and bring micro spikes. With each night, the chances are less of them making it but if it were your family member, would you not want them to be found and brought off the mountain?

Searching for missing hiker Bob Gregory Crystal lake PHARRAOH 2023-01-21 | Bob Gregory, 61, Avid hiker, never returned from a hike near Mount Islip, January 2023. I called a friend who also knows the area and possible places search and rescue might overlook, (IF THEY WERE EVEN ACTIVLY SEARCHING) We came across one more local long-time hiker as we were coming off the ridge. I did a previous search yesterday for Jullian Sands, a British actor who went missing a week ago as of the date this is posted. He has also yet to be found. I posted a video of the search, the terrain and conditions and got some pretty rude comments. Such as "dumb ass, don't you know people die searching for these idiots?" To which I replied, (If, your husband, wife, son or daughter was out in the snow missing, would you not be grateful for anyone willing to search) IF you say no, you're a liar, IF you say yes, you're a hypocrite! People are not even looking! What happened to the mentality of people?
Julian Sands missing on mt Baldy. searching bad conditions PHARRAOH 2023-01-20 | youtu.be/EPsuLYQ-1hMWhen a hiker went missing in my area, I figured search and rescue would dive in and fill the mountain. Bad weather, winds, rain and snow have prevented them from doing so and with the cold nights, surviving would be very difficult. Come the 5th day of them putting it off, I decided to make use of a clear morning and do some searching myself. I packed a pack with things that would help get myself out of trouble if need be and things to deal with him if I found him. We went up about to the ski hut calling loudly to him along the way and searching areas of possible slides and chutes. Then bad conditions returned quickly. We knew it was time to call it and made our way back down. Sadley, Mr., Sands is still up there, this day being his 6th day out in the elements. I pray for him to be found alive and make it out. There is another hiker some miles to the west and weather permitting, I will go up and try my hand at finding him. This is his 2nd night out in the elements. The mountain has claimed 3 lives already this year and these two are still mia. If you decide to go up, go prepared, don't go alone, leave your route, plans, parking location your going to be and a time you should be back with at least one person.

1/10/2023 The recent rains effect on the San Gabriel Rivers PHARRAOH 2023-01-11 | Took a drive up to see the rivers and trail head. See the new routes carved by a good rainstorm. After the huge fire we had in the area, new paths replace the old and alter the terrain again and again. New gold deposited are brought to the surface, old ones dredged up again and again. Gold was once found here in abundance and has been found here EVERY DAY since in minute amounts. A couple of big-time finds were by backpacker Dave, now m.i.a. and good ol Kevin B, each with some big ol nugs! The main source has never been located although a few long-time miners of yesteryear had a few theories. What once drew people here from all over the world has since become a hobby to most although even up to date, there are still a few die Hards working it day in and day out for an actual living. I have seen them come and go over the last 40 plus years. I have seen the canyons change much. I have seen rangers start and the same retire. I have seen people I knew die in the canyon. I have seen and done much in my time and a huge amount of my life has all been up here. Please help keep it natural, clean, alive and beautiful. WE, the people who love these mountains are the Stewarts of them. Teach your children the same, so when their kids grow up, they can still wander an ancient trail and learn it's secrets.
