ABOUT
For many, his concert at the North Sea Jazz Festival in 2000 was one of the best shows ever seen in the Netherlands. On that sensational evening D’Angelo showed he is an outstanding bandleader as well as a charismatic multi-instrumentalist. He whipped his horn section – all of whom are jazz musicians – into a frenzy and each one gave the performance of their life. Afterwards, things fell frightening silent for him for quite a while as a result of artistic questioning and personal problems. But now, fifteen years on, D’Angelo is literally back and in top form. His new album Black Messiah (2015) has been dubbed a masterpiece and the show that the king of ‘groove, croon and swoon’ brought to Amsterdam earlier this year was a sensual, romping, sometimes raunchy and completely unforgettable soul spectacle. A unique opportunity to see this reborn master of soul hit the heights once again.

"Brown Sugar" is a song by American recording artist D'Angelo, taken from his debut album of the same name (1995). The song was released as the album's lead single in June 1995, through the Cooltempo label. It was written and produced by D'Angelo and frequent collaborator Ali Shaheed Muhammad. The song received critical acclaim by music critics, and peaked at number 27 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number 24 on the UK Singles Chart. The accompanying music video was directed by American film director and producer Brett Ratner, and features D'Angelo performing the song in a nightclub.

ABOUT this concert, press release of 2009
The professional career of Sealhenry Olusegun Olumide Samuel, as is Seal's full name, appeared to have reached a dead end after about ten years without a hit. But his personality had made him into a superstar, as did his marriage with the German super model Heidi Klum. With the aid of the successful Canadian producer David Foster, who was also responsible for the productions of Earth, Wind & Fire and, more recently, Michael Bublé, he recorded SOUL last year. With only the best musicians, classics like A Chance Is Gonna Come (Sam Cooke), Knock on Wood (Eddie Floyd) and It's a Man's Man's Man's World (James Brown) were recorded in the producer's own home. During his live show, Seal will surely reach back to major hits of the 90s, like Killer, Crazy and Kiss from a Rose. The most important thing, however, is that the superstar is feeling really good at the moment and is scoring big hits again.

ABOUT
Paul Weller used to be the singer-songwriter of The Jam, the most popular British band of the punk era. The funny thing about The Jam was that the band more or less kept punk at arm's length from the very start and sounded more like a modern version of The Who. Just before Weller took the initiative to disband The Jam in 1982, the leader became more and more fascinated by jazz, Motown and soul - a fascination that would lead to The Jam's demise and the founding of The Style Council. Pianist Mick Talbot was responsible for the jazzy streak in the songs and Weller's lyrics - Dropping Bombs on the White House - became more and more grim. After the success of the debut album Café Bleu Weller and Talbot became over-ambitious and over-eclectic, a change that caused a breach with their audience at the end of the eighties. Weller provoked a glorious comeback with his first, title less solo album (1992), followed by the classic albums Wild Wood (1993) and Stanley Road (1995). Last year, after the cover album Studio 150 (with songs by Neil Young, Bart Bacharach and Noel Gallagher), Weller released As Is Now, a collection of songs that was received as one of his better solo albums. On his last two albums he worked with a Dutch horn section, including Benjamin Herman.

ABOUT
For years, George Benson has attracted large audiences at the North Sea Jazz Festival. This man from Pittsburgh grew up as a talented guitarist noticeably influenced by the legendary Wes Montgomery. In the 1960s, it was Miles Davis who first recognized his talent and asked him to play on the album Miles in the Sky. In the 70s, Benson took a more commercial direction and this delivered him immediate success. Songs like On Broadway and Give Me the Night are among the classics that he still performs. But Benson is a man who is also slowly turning to styles like smooth jazz and R&B. In 2006, he recorded the album Givin' It Up with Al Jarreau. They won a Grammy for the album and did a world tour together. At the festival, Benson will be focusing on the repertoire of Nat King Cole. Last year, he toured successfully with this project in his own country.During this tribute, Benson performs his own interpretations of classics like Stardust, Looking Back and Nature Boy. He is currently working on a new album together with the guitarist and keyboards player of Toto.

Solomon Vincent McDonald Burke (born James Solomon McDonald, March 21, 1940 – October 10, 2010) was an American singer who shaped the sound of rhythm and blues as one of the founding fathers of soul music in the 1960s. He has been called "a key transitional figure bridging R&B and soul", and was known for his "prodigious output".
On October 10, 2010, Burke died at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport while on a plane from Washington Dulles International Airport that had just landed. He had been due to perform with Dutch rockgroup De Dijk in Amsterdam on October 12. Burke died of natural causes.

ABOUT -Press release of the concert
If anyone made a conspicuous comeback last year, it was legendary sixties soulman Solomon Burke. Supremely in command of his raw, deeply gospel-rooted voice, the singer, whose nickname is The Bishop of Soul, is up and at 'em again. Last year, at a concert in Paradiso, Burke demonstrated that he still is the undisputed king of soul. Seated upon his throne, he proved able to pull out all the stops. From deep, subdued rumbling to loud, heartfelt cries, Burke managed to produce this range of sounds effortlessly, sometimes all in one breath. It also became apparent that evening what a huge performer the American is. He felt noticeably comfortable as the center of attention and, ever the charmer, handed out roses to the ladies in the audience. His well-received album Don't Give Up On Me is also a clear sign that Burke is back in town, since scoring big hits for the record company Atlantic - at the time one of the better labels in jazz, soul and blues - from 1960 on. Burke has mastered songs by old names like Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Brian Wilson and Van Morrison with ease. Now that Burke is smack in the spotlight again, this big artist - who also runs a limousine service, a funeral parlor and a number of churches - is busier than ever. Especially now that that a big hit, made together with the Dutch Junkie XL, is on its way.

ABOUT
In the seventies and eighties trumpeter Randy and saxophonist Michael Brecker released a couple of outstanding fusion records. The brothers also worked as session musicians on albums of legendary artists like Todd Rundgren and Frank Zappa. In those years composer Randy was the mastermind behind the brothers' surprising compositions that are characterized by an utterly unpredictable structure and complex and harmonious melody lines. After a total silence of ten years, the brothers come together again in 1992 and two years later won a Grammy for Out Of The Loop (1994). When Michael passed away in 2007, Randy decided to bring together a Brecker Brothers Band Reunion with guitarist Dean Brown, keyboardist George Whitty, bassist Chris Minh Doky and drummer Dave Weckl. On the shoulders of the Italian talent Ada Rovatti lies the heavy duty to bring new life to the characteristic sax sound of Michael during the tribute show of this supergroup.

ABOUT
Since the release of her impressive debut album A Change Is Gonna Come, named after Sam Cooke’s hit, Leela James’s career really took flight. Since its release the singer has performed in big television shows like the Soul Train Award Show, and her songs get regular airplay on all music radio stations. Her music, that she describes as ‘back porch soul’ (because it is a rough and honest style that makes her reminisce of the warm summer days of her youth, when they used to sing and play the blues on the porch) is impressive. Her powerful voice displays all colors in the varied rhythm & blues, funk, soul and gospel repertoire. The L.A. born and raised singer initially envisaged a career as a sprinter but a knee injury made an end to that dream and thus James consecrated more time to music. Her father brought her up with the music of B.B. King, Al Green and Marvin Gaye, but since she sang in the local church, she was also interested in gospel.

ABOUT
Who, as a little boy, got Lionel Hampton’s mallets as a present, just has to become a world famous vibraphone player. It happened to Roy Ayers and this special event was to be the beginning of a career that proved to be more than just a career in jazz. The renowned jazz author and producer Leonard Feather discovered Ayers and produced his debut album West Coast Vibes. Soon after that flautist Herbie Mann asked him to join his band. Meanwhile Ayers kept writing his own material and in the mid-seventies he had become a leading musician in the fusion genre. Supported by the club scene he scored a couple of hits in Britain. In the eighties he founded Uno Melodic, his own record label. Today Roy Ayers is considered to be, and honoured as, one of the driving forces behind acid jazz.

ABOUT
In 1980 singer Claude McKnight set up the vocal group Gentlemen's Estate Quartet. He named his quartet after the boys' building of Oakwood College in Huntsville, Alabama - the school where he was educated. After many variations in name and line-up, the quartet eventually evolved into a sextet calling itself Take 6. Take 6 is made up of McKnight and Mark Kibble, Cedric Dent, David Thomas, Alvin Chea and Joey Kibble. Take 6 purposely presents itself as a Christian group. In interviews McKnight say he doesn't want to ram the Bible down people's throats. “We have wrapped up the message attractively through our music and we hope people have picked something up after our concerts.” Musical the group counts as one of the most swinging close-harmony groups with a strong influence of R&B. Quincy Jones used the group on his trail-blazing albums Back on the Block and Q's Jook Joint.

ABOUT
Charismatic Paul Anka has been a master crooner for half a century now. In the last few years the singer could mostly be seen performing in life size events in the gambling city of LasVegas, but ever since his CD Rock Swings - in which eighties and nineties pop and rock songs were subjected to a swing metamorphosis- he's back again. Canadian born, but residing in California for years now, he started his massive career as a teenage idol with hits like Diana and Put Your Head On My Shoulder. As a songwriter he procured countless artists, including Buddy Holly, 'Rat Packer' Sammy Davis Jr and Tom Jones, with beautiful songs. And of course: Anka wrote the lyrics of Frank Sinatra's biggest success My Way. Anka is working on a new CD right now, and at the festival he and his big band will treat us to a foretaste.

The Neville Brothers were an American R&B/soul/funk group, formed in 1976 in New Orleans, Louisiana.
The group started in 1976, when the four brothers of the Neville family, Art (1937–2019), Charles (1938–2018), Aaron (b. 1941), and Cyril (b. 1948) came together to take part in the recording session of the Wild Tchoupitoulas, a Mardi Gras Indian group led by the Nevilles' uncle, George Landry ("Big Chief Jolly"). Their debut album The Neville Brothers was released in 1978 on Capitol Records.
In 1987, the group released Uptown on the EMI label, featuring guests including Branford Marsalis, Keith Richards, and Carlos Santana. The following year saw the release of Yellow Moon from A&M Records produced by Daniel Lanois.
ABOUT - This is the press release of this concert in 2006:
It boggles the mind when you realise that the Brothers Neville haven been in the music business for more than 40 years. Although Aaron, Art, Charles and Cyril Neville didn’t start performing under the name The Neville Brothers until the end of the seventies, their individual ànd collective careers commenced in 1953. In that year Art started playing the piano in his high school band The Hawkettes. A year later the band recorded the single Mardi Gras Mambo, a song that has become the unofficial anthem of the Mardi Gras, of New Orleans’ carnival. In the meantime Aaron and Charles had already joined the band. The brothers had started working with producer Allen Toussaint and as a solo-artist Aaron scored hits like Over You and Tell It Like It Is. The founding in 1967 of the band Art Neville and the Sounds is generally seen as the first attempt to gather all brothers under one family name and after a few changes of personnel The Sounds could boast a rhythm section that later on would enjoy world fame under the name The Meters. 1977 is the official birth year of a group that first would be called The Neville Brothers Family Band, but soon was re-baptized The Neville Brothers. The Daniel Lanois produced album Yellow Moon (1989) yielding hits like With God On Our Side and Sister Rosa. In 2004, half a century after Mardi Gras Mambo and after five years of silence, The Neville Brothers released the autobiographical album Walkin’ In The Shadows Of Life.

ABOUT
James Morrison (1984) already has several international hits to his name. He has also played at many festivals, but he has never performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival. This summer, the English singer-songwriter is finally coming to Rotterdam. Morrison's voice has a smoky edge to it, in his own words the result of a bout of whooping cough in his childhood. After traveling around a lot with his mother, he arrived in Cornwall as a teenager and began performing as a street musician. His first single You Give Me Something (2006) was an immediate hit. Last fall Morrison released his third album, The Awakening, his most personal recording to date. Morrison recently became at once a father for the first time and lost his own father. He speaks to his father and daughter respectively in moving songs like Up and One Life.

The Zawinul Syndicate was a jazz fusion band formed by Austrian keyboardist Joe Zawinul in 1988. The band evolved out of Zawinul's former band Weather Report. The band adhered to Zawinul's roots in jazz. Their style could be described as a combination of unusual grooves, driving and swinging rhythms and many borrowings from different music cultures.
Josef Erich Zawinul (7 July 1932 – 11 September 2007) was an Austrian jazz and jazz fusion keyboardist and composer. First coming to prominence with saxophonist Cannonball Adderley, Zawinul went on to play with Miles Davis and to become one of the creators of jazz fusion, a musical genre that combined jazz with rock. He co-founded the groups Weather Report and The Zawinul Syndicate. SÉRGIO MENDES
Brazilian musician Sérgio Mendes, who helped popularise bossa nova and samba with Western audiences, has died at the age of 83, his family has confirmed September 5, 2024.
The bandleader and composer is best known for the buoyant Latin pop hit Mas Que Nada, and putting Brazilian twists on English songs such as The Look Of Love and The Beatles' The Fool On The Hill.
Mendes recorded more than 35 albums, many of which went gold or platinum in the US; and received an Oscar nomination in 2012 for co-writing the song Real in Rio from the animated film Rio.
A statement from his family said Mendes "passed away peacefully" on Thursday in Los Angeles, surrounded by his wife and children.
Sérgio Santos Mendes (11 February 1941 – 5 September 2024) was a Brazilian musician.
His career took off with worldwide hits by his band Brasil '66. He released 35 albums and was known for playing bossa nova, often mixed with funk. He was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song in 2012 as a co-writer of "Real in Rio" from the animated film Rio.
Mendes was primarily known in the United States, where his albums were recorded and where most of his touring took place. He was married to Gracinha Leporace, who performed with him from the early 1970s. Mendes collaborated with many artists, including Black Eyed Peas, with whom he re-recorded in 2006 a remake of his 1966 version of the song "Mas que Nada", which was a breakthrough hit for him.

ABOUT - press release of the concert in 2008:
He is one of the most popular Brazilian artists ever, not just for playing covers of other artists' songs, but also for a fashionable mixture of jazz, bossa nova rhythms and soft pop melodies with his group Brasil '66. The pianist-singer of bossa nova Sergio Mendes is back in the picture thanks to rapper Will.i.am of the urban pop collective the Black Eyed Peas. The rapper restyled Mendes' bossa and samba repertoire for Timeless, a CD that contained cheerful contributions from soul and hip-hop stars like Erykah Badu, Stevie Wonder and John Legend. This is continued on its successor Encanto (released in June this year). The album includes catchy Brazilian melodies, including new versions of Antonio Carlos Jobim's songs, as well as international jazz influences. Again Mendes worked with well-known singers: Natalie Cole, Jovanotti, Juanes and Ledisi. Welcome to the official North Sea Jazz Archive! ABOUT - press release at the time
The way American singer Gregory Porter has worked on his solo career these past years is impressive. By performing a lot, and leaving a lasting impression with each concert, he has built a huge fan base. Porter's warm and mature sound is very attractive to many. Yet it could all have transpired so differently. Porter was on his way to becoming an American football star, when a shoulder injury put a spoke in the wheel. While injured he accidentally attended a jam session and this led to an obsession for making music. Porter, who is now past forty, will not have had a single regret. After three powerful albums, he is regarded as one of the best jazz singers of today. His new album Take Me To The Alley will be released in early May. ABOUT
Charismatic Paul Anka has been a master crooner for half a century now.

ABOUT
When discussing Esperanza Spalding, one should of course talk about jazz. But this is a bit difficult in the year she won a Grammy Award, and beat teen idol Justin Bieber, in the category Best New Artist. It's a bit strange as well, because her most recent album, Chamber Music Society, doesn't relate to the genre of pop music at all. Though Spalding certainly appeals to a younger audience. The bass player and singer from Portland looks great and is known to make accurate statements, like: "I'm not ashamed of anything. I like bizarre contrasts in music and I would never be able to express them all within the boundaries of jazz." However, unconsciously she does seem to be the appointed bridge-builder for a new generation of jazz lovers. Her music has many influences like jazz, folk, world music, as well as classical music. The artist herself has found a name for it: "Spalding music. Let's call it that."

ABOUT
The New York quarter Spanish Harlem (called ‘El Barrio’ by its community) is the native soil of salsa, Latin soul, boogaloo and many other Latin-varieties. The fifteen-headed Spanish Harlem Orchestra from this neighborhood, described as ‘the New York answer to Buena Vista Social Club’, brings a musical portrait of their conspicuous quarter. Their Un Gran Día en El Barrio, which means as much as ‘a great day in Harlem’, is a colorful album where modern players of salsa bring homage to the music of before, lead by well-known pianist and arranger Oscar Hernández. The history of the renowned neighborhood, from which so many musical genres have sprung, is captured in rhythmical cadres and catchy melodies.

ABOUT
On the pop scene, Rufus Wainwright (1973) needs no introduction. The American-Canadian singer-songwriter has blazed a trail across the world of theater and opera and as a movie actor. Wainwright has experienced personal turmoil recently because his mother, folk singer Kate McGarrigle, passed away, his daughter Viva was born and he announced his engagement to Jorn Weisbrodt. The echoes of these life events can be heard on his latest album Out Of The Game. It was produced by Grammy winner Mark Ronson, known for his productions with Amy Winehouse and Adele, among others. Ronson and Wainwright appear to share a preference for music from the 1970s. The songwriting of Harry Nilsson and Elton John and the warm, grooving sound of Steely Dan were the inspiration for Out Of The Game. The album is Wainwright's most accessible record so far. His warm voice and classically oriented piano playing can be experienced to their best in Ronson's soulful and richly orchestrated production work.

ABOUT
With eight platinum albums, nine Grammys and 50 million records sold, worldwide, Mary J. Blige is one of the greatest soul stars of the past decades. Yet the ‘Queen of Hip-Hop Soul’ only now debuts at the North Sea Jazz Festival. A moment her many fans, as well as the organizers, have been looking forward to. No one is able to capture as much emotion and strength in their voice as Mary J. Blige. The singer was born in 1971 in the Bronx to a nurse and a jazz musician. At the beginning of the nineties, she was one of the first to combine soulful vocals with pumping hip hop beats, a concept that would form the blueprint of contemporary soul and R&B. For her most recent album, The London Sessions, from 2014, Blige travelled to the capital of England, where she went in search of a new sound, collaborating with young stars like Sam Smith, Emeli Sandé, Naughty Boy and Disclosure.

ABOUT
When you are born in South America, music seems to come so naturally, as if it runs in your blood. Yet, Colombian Yuri Buenaventura only found his music in Europe. In the French capital Paris, where he studied Economics, he used to sing in metrostations to earn an extra penny. But when the 'Latin fever' broke out in France at the beginning of the 90s, Buenaventura quickly acted on it and started his first band. His salsa cover of Jacques Brel's Ne Me Quitte Pas made his international breakthrough and with his debut album Herencia Africana (1996) he earned a gold record in his home country. Not only are songs written by Buenaventura very danceable and exhilarating, he also has a message to convey. Most of his lyrics are critical of politics and society. Still, the 40-year-old singer is mainly an artist to enjoy. A fresh counterweight for the 'old boys' from Cuba, with a live act that seems to sparkle.

ABOUT
At the first edition of the Curaçao North Sea Jazz Festival in 2010, bassist-vocalist Richard Bona had the audience wrapped around his finger. Although they could not understand his words (Bona sings in Douala, a Cameroonian dialect), his personality, the transparency of the songs and his hypnotic playing easily won the hearts of his listeners. He recently released the album The Ten Shades Of Blues, with music derived from the blues. This summer, he is touring Europe with Raul Midón. The blind guitarist-vocalist (born in New Mexico) is known for his dizzying percussive guitar playing in which he blends jazz and flamenco as a matter of course. His soulful voice is for many reminiscent of Stevie Wonder and he can use the mouth horn effectively in songs, with his lips imitating a bebop trumpet. Midón has not yet performed with a band in the Netherlands, so this collaboration promises to be something special.

ABOUT
This year sax diva Candy Dulfer features a very special guest in her band. Drummer Sheila E, an acquaintance Dulfer met whilst touring with superstar Prince, will be present to give the group-sound a good whack. Other colleagues from Prince’s band, keyboardist and singer Chance Howard and drummer John Blackwell, will also join in. All that means that there will be a lot to enjoy during the concert of the Dutch saxophonist whose musical curriculum vitae has grown into something to be proud of. Maceo Parker, Van Morrison, Patti Labelle, Aretha Franklin, Blondie, Dave Stewart and Prince: at a given time they all queued up to perform with this kind musician. A short update: after countless albums, including Right in My Soul that was recorded in London, Dulfer is working on new songs for a new studio album. She’s just returned from an extensive tour of Japan. Last year was in the sign of Prince’s Musicology Tour and her own European tour. Furthermore she contributed to the new album of Maceo Parker.

ABOUT
The Cuban Parisian Raul Paz is immensely popular in France. The singer-songwriter has been stamped the front man of the Nuevo Latino movement. His steamy, swinging concerts, with rock, ska and soul influences, are really happening. But he also sings small, intimate songs from the heart. Paz was born in Pinar del Rio on Cuba. He emigrated to France to study classical music at the Paris Conservatory, but eventually he made a name for himself jamming in small clubs with Afro-Cuban musicians. In 1998, after being discovered, he went to New York and the 'French Cuban' was offered the opportunity to record an album brimming with sexy Latino pop. Back in Paris he makes popular dance orientated albums like Mulata ('03) and Revolución ('05). On his fifth album En Casa, Paz has returned to his Cuban roots. "It's an ode to the 20th century Cuban song", Paz told the daily paper nrc.next.

ABOUT
Since it was founded in 1994, New Cool Collective has performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival numerous times. And rightly so, because the collective surrounding saxophonist and front man Benjamin Herman has been among the world's best for years with a unique blend of jazz, afrobeat, dance, Latin and salsa. That the eight-member formation remains up to date is mainly due to the fact that these Dutch high-energy soul-jazz pioneers are able to re-invent and re-discover themselves again and again. Thus, New Cool Collective transforms itself regularly into a big band by adding eleven extra musicians and continuously looks for unusual collaborations, like the ones with afrobeat legend Tony Allen, poet Jules Deelder and Zwolle polder rapper Typhoon. In Ahoy, the Netherlands' most swinging jazz formation will mainly be playing pieces from the latest album that was released this spring. It is guaranteed to be a big party, as per usual.

Aaron Neville (vocals); Art Neville (vocals, organ); Cyril Neville (vocals, percussion); Ivan Neville (vocals, keyboards); Charles Neville (horn); Ian Neville, Makuni Fukuda (guitar); Nick Daniels (bass); Willie Green (drums).

His 2012 debut album, Home Again, went gold in the United Kingdom and his second album, Love & Hate, debuted in 2016 at number one. He has been nominated for numerous honours, including the Brit Awards, MTV Europe Music Awards, BBC Music Awards, and The Grammy Awards. ABOUT - press release at the time of the concert:
Londoner Michael Kiwanuka, who is only in his early twenties, was relatively unknown when he appeared on the stage of Into The Great Wide Open and in a small hall at the Songbird festival in 2011, but this summer the whole world will be at his feet. That's how fast things can go if your debut album blazes across the internet. On Home Again Kiwanuka interweaves soul with storytelling folk music in ten beautifully arranged songs. He delivers music that puts him in the company of Bill Withers, Randy Newman and Otis Redding. Not the least to be compared with. Yet Kiwanuka is more than just a modern-day Marvin Gaye, because his arrangements carry the traits of musical omnivorism and his songs have the quality of modern craftsmanship that makes his music so up-to-date. It's for this good reason that a panel of music critics and industry figures selected Kiwanuka as the winner of the BBC's Sound Of 2012.

ABOUT
Paul Weller used to be the singer-songwriter of The Jam, the most popular British band of the punk era.

Gregory Porter (born November 4, 1971) is an American singer, songwriter and actor. He has twice won the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album: first in 2014 for Liquid Spirit and then again in 2017 for Take Me to the Alley.
It's self-explanatory that he has often performed at North Sea Jazz, where he already appeared in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014.

ABOUT
Jonathan Jeremiahwas born in North London as Johnnie Pepper. As a kid he dreamt of a career in music. When working security at Wembley Stadium as a teenager, he once jumped onto the stage to sing for an imaginary audience. In the spring of 2011 Jeremiah's debut album A Solitary Man was released and the dream came true. That summer he made his debut at the North Sea Jazz Festival. At that time Jeremiah was accompanied by the Metropole Orkest and demonstrated that his warm baritone voice is well equipped for crooning. Meanwhile his second album Gold Dust has been released. His lyrics are inspired by the North London borough he grew up in, but musically he is influenced by the sixties' sound of California; the sound of The Beach Boys and Phil Spector. Jeremiah will come to Rotterdam with a small ensemble of keyboard, guitar, bass and drums.

ABOUT
Silje Nergaard has become an indispensable singer in the European jazz scene. With her enchanting voice, her beautiful, romantic compositions and charming appearance Silje is an artist whose new albums are always something to yearn for - a yearning that isn't limited to her motherland Norway, where she was declared artist of the year. It all started with a spontaneous jam session with the band of Jaco Pastorius at a jazz festival in Norway. The was 16 years old when she climbed onto the stage. She was talented, the media concluded in unition, and gave her rave reviews. Her unusual, subtle and original vocal improvisations made the public shiver. Enough reason for Pat Metheny to introduce her to a mogul of the music industry. She made albums in English and Norwegian and established herself as a composer. This year her eighth album, Nightwatch, was released.

Stefano Di Battista (saxophone); Eric Legnini (piano); Richard Bona (bass); Manu Katché (drums).
ABOUT
They’ve all been admired individually at the North Sea Jazz Festival, but they’ve never performed in this lineup before. The quartet that Manu Katché, Richard Bona, Stefano di Battista and Eric Legnini formed recently can only be described as an international all-star band. Drummer Manu Katché could justifiably call himself the master of busy flow: the Mohammed Ali of drummers, light-footed with a heavy groove that packs a punch. Qualities that could also be ascribed to Richard Bona. With his bass and voice he blends a wide range of timbres into a hypnotic mix. A unique rhythm section that is completed by an exceptionally melodic duo: saxophonist Stefano de Battista and pianist Eric Legnini. The quartet was specially formed for the Jazz in Marciac festival and, to the delight of their many fans, they decided to stay together and conquer the world.

Diana Krall (vocals, piano); Stuart Duncan (viola, guitar); Aram Bajakian (guitar); Patrick Warren (keyboards); Dennis Crouch (double bass); Karriem Riggins (drums).
ABOUT (press release of 2013)
Diana Krall is a very popular guest at the festival. The Canadian pianist and singer has a lot to offer: alongside a pleasing, sultry voice, she has a magic touch when selecting her songs and backing musicians. Krall has constantly taken new directions throughout her twenty-year-long recording career. She drew from Brazilian traditions on her previous, Grammy-Award winning album Quiet Nights and for her latest recording Glad Rag Doll, dove into the treasure chamber of American musical history. On the album, she worked with producer T Bone Burnett for the first time, and he also plays guitar on some tracks. She is also backed by Marc Ribot on electric and acoustic guitar, bass and banjo, plus a line-up of other talented musicians with their roots in bluegrass. This all results in lovely, moving renditions of songs like Lonely Avenue and We Just Couldn't Say Goodbye.

George Duke (vocals, keyboards); Boney James (sax); Shannon Pearson (backing vocals); Roy Hargrove (flugelhorn, trumpet); Jef Lee Johnson (guitar); Kevin Randolph (keyboards); Mike Manson, Stanley Clarke (bass); Gordon Campbell (drums).
ABOUT
The concert of the George Duke Band is one of the special super sessions in connection with the 30th anniversary celebration. Pianist and singer George Duke shares the stage with a.o. Stanley Clarke, trumpeter Roy Hargrove and sax player Boney James. It’s a task a multi-talented musician like George Duke can be entrusted with. His roll of honours is impressive. He played straight-ahead jazz with jazz-musicians like Cannonball Adderley, Sonny Rollins and Billy Cobham, and recorded funk, soul and disco on his own albums that he recorded from 1977 onwards. He played for years in the band of Frank Zappa, but he also got a kick out of the Clarke-Duke Project, the funk band he co-led with Stanley Clarke. From the end of the seventies until the mid-eighties his music became more and more disco oriented, producing mega-hits such as Shine On and Reach out. He wrote a lot of songs with his musical partner Stanley Clarke, with whom he recorded a lot of success albums. Recently he released Duke, a new album with a multi-coloured collection of jazz, funk, soul, latin and r&b.
