The engine is being fired here with Argon but is designed to operate on Xenon and Krypton in Orbit. Argon is a more appropriate fuel for early qualification testing. This is the largest engine in the United Kingdom at this time. Pulsar is constructing a 25kW engine.
This engine was built by Pulsar as part of a UK Space Agency collaboration with the University of Southampton, University of Cambridge and Nuclear AMRC who were tasked with designing a nuclear power source for such an engine.Pulsar Fusion Ion and Hall effect ThrustersPulsar Fusion2023-12-18 | Video showing parts of Pulsar's electric and rocket propulsion facility.Pulsar Fusion, Hybrid Rockets, Lolan Naicker.Pulsar Fusion2022-10-18 | Lolan Naicker describes the application and continued development of Pulsar Fusion's Hybrid rocket engine program.
Hybrid rocket propulsion is used in several specific areas of space transportation. Those applications are microsatellites (manoeuvring and orbit transfer), lunar and planetary landers, suborbital and orbital tourism vehicles. The most positive qualities of a hybrid propulsion are simplicity, safety, stop and restart ability, throttling ability. Hybrid propellants are mostly storable and non-toxic. What is more, fuel and oxidiser are separated and stored in different phases, which positively effects on the safety level.
Pulsar has tested its Hybrid Thruster System on three occasions since its rapid development program at the end of 2021. The first of these was a low-pressure system shakedown test at the MOD COTEC facility in the UK where the team’s ability to manage operations safely during a test campaign were proven alongside the system’s ability to function safely. This was followed by a high-pressure test at Gstaad airport in Switzerland where the system was successfully tested at full thrust and under adverse environmental conditions. A third test campaign was conducted at an independent test facility at RAF Westcott UK to validate performance using high fidelity sensor systems. The thruster system completed all testing with no failures or damage.Pulsar Fusion, Liquid Hydrogen Rockets, Dr Adam Baker.Pulsar Fusion2022-10-18 | Dr Adam Baker describes the application and development ambitions for Pulsar Fusion's LH2 rocket engine development program.
Liquid hydrogen is the highest performance chemical propulsion fuel, stemming from its low molecular mass and high heat of combustion. This allows hydrogen rocket engines to deliver the most payload when used for launch and in-space transportation. Major spacefaring nations of the world have occasionally used LH2 in their vehicles, however its perceived costs and complexity have limited its usage primarily to upper stages of launch vehicles. There is now a growing demand for clean, powerful propulsion systems post deployment. Applications include Stage 2 propulsion, Upper stage for small launchers currently using non cryogenic propellants, In Space transportation, Lunar Gateway resupply / Asteroid Mining.Pulsar Fusion, Electric Propulsion, Prof. Charlie Ryan and Dr. James Lambert.Pulsar Fusion2022-10-18 | Prof. Charlie Ryan and Dr. James Lambert describe the application and continued development of Pulsar Fusion's Electric Propulsion (EP) program.
Pulsar Fusion have been developing Hall-effect thrusters (HET) technology since 2016. This is a type of ion thruster in which the propellant is accelerated by an electric field for ‘In space propulsion. Hall Effect thrusters use a magnetic field to limit the electrons' axial motion and then use them to ionize propellant, efficiently accelerate the ions to produce thrust, and neutralize the ions in the plume.
Pulsar has tested its HET’s for structural launch integrity on a vibration table at Harwell, UK in 2021. The thrusters experienced 20 GRMS which simulates the conditions of a most extreme launch. The thrusters completed the testing with no reported failures or damage. The Pulsar Fusion mission described by CEO, Richard Dinan, 2022.Pulsar Fusion2022-08-13 | This video describes the three core propulsion technologies developed by Pulsar Fusion in the UK and how they will be used in the changing environments of space exploration.Pulsar Fusion - In orbit assembly of nuclear fusion rocket.Pulsar Fusion2022-03-17 | The animation describes the concept of launching a nuclear fusion reactor into orbit in sections for final assembly in space. The oxidiser quantity and engine impulse were increased by a factor of nearly 10, and the the chamber pressure raised from around 5 bar to over 20 bar on the first Swiss test to nearly 50 bar on the 2nd one. We supercharged the flow with nitrogen pressurant which has not been done in the UK before and in doing so raised the thrust significantly from its initial value of around half a tonne of thrust.
Design Isp is 240s, we are currently processing the data from the firing to establish the actual performance. This engine would be capable of launching a small rocket to an altitude of several 10s of km, well above UK airspace, or powering the upper stage of a rocket with a larger booster stage into orbit.
Current design will achieve a 10s burn. New tanks and components have now arrived at the UK Pulsar facility to allow this to be doubled to at least 20s. The intention is to springboard from this design to a larger, 100kN thrust class all liquid engine using even cleaner propellants which would power the booster stage of an orbital launch vehicle, starting in 2022.
The propellants used, nitrous oxide N2O and polyethylene HDPE are some of the cleanest available to the space industry, producing an exhaust of largely water vapour and having an extremely low production energy requirement, resulting in one of the lowest carbon footprints in the world for an engine of this sizePulsar Fusion supercharged hybrid rocket test in Gstaad, SwitzerlandPulsar Fusion2021-11-29 | Test at Gstaad Airport on 27th of November 2021, ran our no.2 engine on liquid oxidiser compared to only gas in the UK tests. Krypton has a higher atomic mass than Argon so produces a greater level of thrust when the ions are accelerated. Kr also has a high storage density so is therefore efficient when considering storage on spacecraft.
Pulsar is developing these engines for sensitive manoeuvres in space and repositioning of satellites.
Pulsar Fusion also specialises in developing #NuclearFusion technology for use as propulsion.
Whilst governments plan to demonstrate the world’s first nuclear fusion reactor (ITER) in 2025, Pulsar Fusion, a nimble start up in the UK, aims to have demonstrated nuclear fusion rocket engines in space before fusion technology is harnessed for grid power supply on Earth.
Fusion rocket engines are useful technology using nuclear fusion technology today, whilst fusion for energy may still be several decades away due extensive additional technological requirements and the multi-national and typically highly bureaucratic power station timescales.
Fusion rockets do not require large steam turbines and much of the expensive equipment necessary for a power station build project that can take many years to finance and construct.
However, by 2100, world governments predict nuclear fusion will be the dominant power supply of our planet, replacing nuclear fission.
Nuclear Fusion rocket technology has the ability to half mission times to Mars and could open up the possibility of visiting planets outside of our solar system.
