Vertigo video review. Classic Game Room presents a CGR Undertow video review of Vertigo for Nintendo Wii developed by Icon Games and published by Playlogic.
Remember Marble Madness? Or maybe Super Monkey Ball, if you’re not old? Vertigo is the same kind of roll-based puzzle game. Only this time, you play with tilt. Controlling a large sphere called a Xorber, players must roll to the end of each perilous course. Roll carefully, though—it’s a long way down. The game also includes a unique bowling mode. Vertigo features single-player and local multiplayer gameplay on the Nintendo Wii.

Got questions? Derek is back with MORE answers! After our earlier Q&A video, the questions kept coming in—so we're doing a sequel! How much longer can Derek talk about cartoons, video games and Pez candy? Well, if it were a contest, you wouldn't want to challenge him. Thanks to everyone who asked questions! This is the last Q&A in this series. We promise. We think. Probably.

Got questions? Derek has answers! Well, sort of. It really depends on how you define ""answers."" But if you'd like to hear Derek yell incoherently after reading viewer questions, this is the video for you. We're sure there are answers somewhere in there. They just might not be the answers to the questions in question. See how deep and existential this is getting? Just wait 'til you see the video. Thanks for asking your questions, everyone! It's a Monday and we didn't feel like playing a lousy Barbie game. We hope you'll understand.
Arguably the greatest strength of the Wii Remote, its pointer made the system a great fit for home console adaptations of arcade light gun games. In 2010, SEGA packaged two of those games on one Wii disc for Arcade Hits Pack: Gunblade NY & L.A. Machineguns. For Wii owners who love games like House of the Dead and Ghost Squad, this is a great addition to your library. The two games feature similar gameplay in which players, from an aerial perspective, blast enemies above and below. It’s a fast-paced game that provides a frantic on-rails experience. Arcade Hits Pack: Gunblade NY & L.A. Machineguns features single-player and local multiplayer play on the Nintendo Wii.

It’s time for Derek’s annual countdown of his ten favorite metal albums of the year! But don’t worry—even if you’re not a metal fan, you may still like some of this music. There have been some great metal albums this year that are also accessible for non-metal fans, some of which are included on Derek’s list. It’s like heavy metal training wheels! This was another solid year for metal music and choosing only ten releases was tough, but Derek settled on some pretty great records. Crank the volume and enjoy!

Because of the Wii U’s patchy record of third-party games, some are suggesting Nintendo’s next console should be more architecturally similar to the competition so third-party publishers can more easily port Nintendo versions of their multiplatform games. The strategy sounds good, but there’s just one problem—the GameCube was similar to its two competing consoles, and it didn’t sell, either. So should Nintendo keep being different or try to be more conventional? In this episode of PONDering, we look at the third-party situation facing Nintendo’s next console—codenamed NX—and, ultimately, whether or not third-party games even matter on Nintendo consoles anymore.

It’s a debate that began in the summer of 1997, and for some of us old blowhards, still rages today. We’ve discussed some important and series gaming topics on PONDering, but none more than this—is playing as Oddjob cheating or not? There are certainly good arguments that he isn’t. After all, he's included in the game, isn’t he? But as Derek argues, some things that aren’t illegal are still frowned upon in a normal and functioning society. Do you ban Oddjob during your GoldenEye sessions? Let us know in the comments! And if not, let us know why!

The plumber and his friends are back for another Mario Party! The tenth main release in the series, Mario Party 10 is a continuation of the big change in Mario Party 9—all players move together on the same little party bus thing. Combined with the more streamlined board design, this does give the game a simpler and more randomized feel, but the all-new Bowser mode makes up for it. Playing as Bowser, one player gets to screw with the other four players during their otherwise normal game of Mario Party, using the GamePad is all kinds of clever ways. The game also includes a minigame mode, if you’d rather not play the board game, and amiibo support.

When Derek tries to review Merlin’s Nintendo Official Album Stickers a fourth time, an ancient curse is set in motion…
During the NES era, children were inspired by pixelated rebels who convinced them that going to bed on time was for losers. And it’s that rebellious 8-bit spirit that caused those children to stick stickers on everything they could. And that’s why adults invented sticker books, a last-ditch effort to contain the rebellion once and for all. And it worked, because sticker books are awesome. In this video, Derek takes a look at stickers from three fresh packs for the official Nintendo sticker album! What mysteries will these perfectly persevered time capsules of rebellion contain? Watch and find out! These stickers feature character art and screenshots from popular Nintendo games! And remember, stickers are like Colorforms, only less versatile.

Hannah Montana: Music Jam video review. Classic Game Room presents a CGR Undertow video review of Hannah Montana: Music Jam for Nintendo DS developed by Gorilla Games and published by Disney Interactive Studios.
Hannah Montana: Music Jam is a two-part game, consisting of a single-player component and a surprisingly solid music creation component. The single-player game takes a form similar to that of many licensed games—players play as Hannah Montana and interact with other characters in her world. The game’s main draw, however, is the music creation mode, which allows players to create their own music by themselves or wirelessly with their friends. You can also make your own music videos, although the interface isn’t terribly intuitive.

Over the last decade or so, online multiplayer has transformed console video games—but have all the changes been positive? As much as playing online connects gamers around the world, has it also made us less connected than ever before? Is that even possible? Either way, it’s hard to argue that gaming’s focus on all-things-online hasn’t had some negative effects, too. Watch Derek go over some of his concerns in today’s edition of PONDering.

Bomberman trades multiplayer mayhem for solitary adventure in Pocket Bomberman, a single-player puzzle/platformer for the Game Boy Color. The game combines that classic Bomberman gameplay with the flavor of a platformer—power-ups, side-scrolling, boss battles, the works. The game’s 25 levels are divided into five separate worlds, each with its own aesthetic and theme. Kwirk is a walking tomato. Just go with it. And when his tomato gal pal is kidnapped, he has to solve puzzles to save her. Somehow, her name isn’t Cherry, which seems like a missed opportunity to us. The game has two individual modes—one with individual puzzles and another where they must be solved on a timer in succession. The game’s controls are slightly touchy, so beware of playing with the GameCube’s lousy d-pad on the Game Boy Player, but the gameplay is fast, fun and totally addictive. It’s like someone stuck an NES cartridge in your lightning port. Downwell is a retro-styled shooter with a self-explanatory objective—fall down the well. Of course, that’s easier said than done thanks to an assortment on subterranean monsters, but fortunately, you are wearing weaponized boots. If you’re not sold on “weaponized boots,” then clearly, there is no pleasing you. As you fall, you blast enemies with your shoes. And that’s awesome. Dead Heat Scramble video review. Classic Game Room presents a CGR Undertow video review of Dead Heat Scramble for the Game Boy developed by Copya System and published by Electro Brain.
Dead Heat Scramble is a top-down racer with a slightly F-Zero twist—the entire race takes place in a tube. In fact, it’s actually one super-long tube split into sections by checkpoints. Once players reach a checkpoint, they can continue from that point after losing. And chances are they will lose. Dead Heat Scramble is a challenging and often frustrating racing game, but once players adapt to its loose controls, it’s still a fun experience. At least, in doses. And with a little luck, too. Nintendo is often referred to as the Disney of video games. And while that’s mostly a complement, the comparison does highlight some negatives—is Nintendo, like Disney, a bit too conservative with their icons? In this edition of PONDering, we ask the question and compare Nintendo to one of Disney’s old rivals, an animation studio that took a slightly different approach to its own iconic characters. Should Nintendo make Mario a little less Mickey Mouse…and a little more Bugs Bunny?

Corvette 50th Anniversary is a “racing adventure” in which player drive through eight different regions of America, unlocking historical Corvette models along the way. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire video review. Classic Game Room presents a CGR Undertow video review of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire for the Game Boy Advance developed and published by Electronic Arts.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is a hack-and-slash action game. Playing as the film’s trio of young wizards, you get to experience the events of the film in this simple brawler. Harry, Hermione and Ron are controlled with the analog stick, while magic spells are cast with button presses. The magic spells are context sensitive, so they change according to your situation. The game is more straightforward and linear than prior Harry Potter video games, but it still plays well enough to be recommended to fans of the series. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire looks surprisingly good on the GBA. Keeping with the darker tone of Goblet of Fire, the game is filled with intense battle sequences and lots of monsters to fight. Classic Game Room presents a CGR Undertow video review of Mega Man Legacy Collection for PC, developed and published by Capcom.
Mega Man Legacy Collection lacks a few things that the PS2/Xbox/GameCube Anniversary Collection had. Namely, Mega Man 7, Mega Man 8, and the two Power Battles arcade games. That seems like a lot at first glance, but consider that this Legacy Collection attempts to compensate with full soundtracks of all six original NES Mega Man titles, plus enemy data and concept art. Gurumin: A Monstrous Adventure is a game that occupies an odd space: A Japanese PC release that went largely unnoticed in the West, it caught the eyes of PSP fans when Mastiff ported it to Sony's handheld. That's not exactly the largest market, though, so it remained a cult favorite... until this recent wave of PSP-to-PC ports. Spider-Man video review. Classic Game Room presents a CGR Undertow video review of Spider-Man for the Game Boy Advance developed by Digital Eclipse Software and published by Activision.
This 2D action game is based on the 2002 Spider-Man film. Players swing all over New York City and take out enemies, and the game is heavy on side-scrolling beat ‘em up action. Spider-Man can swing through the air with the push of a button, and he can also cling to walls and climb virtually any surface. Similar in both gameplay and design to the Spider-Man 2 GBA follow-up, this Spider-Man lacks the sequel’s 3D hub worlds, opting instead for a few 3D bonus levels. Batman: Rise Of Sin Tzu video review. Classic Game Room presents a CGR Undertow video review of Batman: Rise Of Sin Tzu for the Game Boy Advance developed and published by Ubisoft.
Based on the animated series The New Batman Adventures, Batman: Rise Of Sin Tzu is a beat ‘em up that brings the style of the show to the Game Boy Advance. Players must bring down Sin Tzu, a new villain designed specifically for this game. Batman: Rise Of Sin Tzu features gameplay typical of a 2D brawler. Groups of enemies attack, and players must fend them off before progressing. This is a very straightforward beat ‘em up focused purely on action, a simplicity that may turn off some older and more experienced players. The highlight of Batman: Rise Of Sin Tzu might be its animation, and the game’s graphics are also solid. The handheld version of Batman: Rise Of Sin Tzu is a single-player game.

Classic Game Room presents a CGR Undertow video review of Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward for PS3, developed and published by Square Enix.
Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward does all the things an expansion needs to do: new jobs, new characters, new storyline, new areas, new mechanics. All the bases are covered in there. But Heavensward had an additional expectation laid upon it: As the first expansion to the miraculous rebirth that was FFXIV: A Realm Reborn, it had to maintain the sharp upward trajectory it assumed when YoshiP took control. One might even say, "heavensward."

SpongeBob SquarePants video review. Classic Game Room presents a CGR Undertow video review of SpongeBob SquarePants for the Game Boy Advance developed and published by THQ.
We’re pretty sure this is the handheld version of SpongeBob SquarePants: SuperSponge, but since the game came from New Jersey, we can’t be sure. If so, it’s a solid conversion of the popular PlayStation game, and although it loses some of the original’s presentational polish, it’s actually a slight improvement in terms of gameplay and control. Players platform under the sea while collecting new items and weapons. The objective is to do favors for Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy to get their autograph, so find whatever they tell you to! Pac-Man Collection video review. Classic Game Room presents a CGR Undertow video review of Pac-Man Collection for the Game Boy Advance developed by Mass Media, Inc. and published by Namco.
Four of Pac-Man’s greatest games come together in this exclusive compilation for the Game Boy Advance. Pac-Man Collection features the original Pac-Man, Pac-Mania, Pac-Attack and Pac-Man Arrangment. Pac-Mania brought Pac-Man’s classic maze gameplay into 3D, while Pac-Attack combined it with—of all things—Tetris! Perhaps the highlight of the package, however, is the 1996 release Pac-Man Arrangement, which adds complex level layouts and power-ups to the classic Pac-Man formula. A great collection of all-time classics, Pac-Man Collection is a single-player game on the Game Boy Advance.
