Poetry by Sara Teasdale:
I would live in your love as the sea-grasses live in the sea, Borne up by each wave as it passes, drawn down by each wave that recedes; I would empty my soul of the dreams that have gathered in me, I would beat with your heart as it beats, I would follow your soul as it leads.

Two Mountain Songs - Gabriela Lena Frank II. Picaflor Esmeralda (Emerald Hummingbird)
Picaflor Esmeralda, oculta tus alas doradas. (..él de las alas de oro…) Picaflor, no me atajes.
Anda, Picaflor! Mi madre, mi padre, mis padres!
O, Picaflor!
Emerald Hummingbird… Oh! One that flies the highest, one of the golden plumes, one that shines in the sun, in the air… Hummingbird! I want to give you a charge.
Emerald Hummingbird, hide your golden wings. (one of the golden wings…) Hummingbird, do not keep me. Like the dove that has lost its young, oh, they are calling me, they are looking for me: My mother, my father, my parents!
Oh, how much you question me: From where do I come, from where am I. (one that has flown so high…) Look at that mountain: There I was born, among flowers, Oh, they are calling me, they are looking for me: My mother, my father, my parents!
That fire that I’ve started, that I lit on the mountain, at the summit, must be blazing, must be burning,
Look if there still blazes if the mountain still burns at the summit. And if there is much fire, oh, get along, Emerald Hummingbird! Oh, they are calling me, they are looking for me: My mother, my father, my parents!
That fire that I’ve started, that I lit on the mountain, at the summit, must be blazing, must be burning,
Hummingbird… one that flies the highest, Emerald… one that shines and shines. I want to give you a charge I want to give you a mission: Carry this letter to my parents.
I do not know if they will weep (I weep, too) when the read my name of if they will have forgotten me and now will not cry.
That fire that I’ve started, that I lit on the mountain, at the summit, must be blazing, must be burning,
Look if there still burns, Get along, Hummingbird! My mother, my father, my parents!
Oh, Hummingbird!

TRANSLATION The Angel of the Lord announced to Mary And she conceived by the Holy Spirit.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the Fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Behold the handmaiden of the Lord. Do to me according to your word.

Thankful Heart by Paul Williams
"It’s the season to be jolly and joyous, With a burst of pleasure, we feel it arrive. It’s the season when the saints can employ us, To spread the news about peace and to keep love alive.
With a thankful heart, with an endless joy, With a growing family, every girl and boy Will be nephew and niece to me, Will bring love, hope and peace to me. Yes and every night will end, and every day will start With a grateful prayer and a thankful heart.
With an open smile and with open doors, I will bid you welcome, what is mine is yours. With a glass raised to toast your health, And a promise to share the wealth. I will sail a friendly course, file a friendly chart, On a sea of love and a thankful heart.
Life is like a journey, who knows when it ends? Yes and if you need to know the measure of a man, You simply count his friends.
Stop and look around you. The glory that you see Is born again each day, don't let it slip away. How precious life can be!
With a thankful heart that is wide awake I do make this promise: every breath I take Will be used now to sing your praise, And to beg you to share my days. With a loving guarantee that even if we part, I will hold you close in a thankful heart. I will hold you close in a thankful heart."CANTUS: Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas by Hugh Martin arr. "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" Music by Hugh Martin (1914-2011); arr. Stacey V. Gibbs (b. 1962) Text by Ralph Blane (1914-1995) and Stacey V. Gibbs
Have yourself a merry little Christmas Let your heart be light From now on our troubles will be out of sight Have yourself a merry little Christmas Make the Yuletide gay From now on our troubles will be miles away Once again, as in olden days Happy days of yore There we’ll find faithful friends who are dear to us Who gather near to us once more Someday soon we all will be together If the fates allow Until then, we'll have to muddle through somehow Oh, have yourself a merry little Christmas now
We wish you happiness all season long As we send you glad tidings in this special song. May your heart be filled with laughter And cheer and love the whole year long.CANTUS: Mele Kalikimaka (Merry Christmas) by R. CONSIDERING MATTHEW SHEPARD Craig Hella Johnson (b. 1962)
Passion: No. 14 - Stray Birds Text by Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941)
Stray birds of summer come to my window to sing and fly away. And yellow leaves of autumn which have no songs flutter and fall there with a sigh. Once we dreamt that we were strangers. We wake up to find that we were dear to each other.
Passion: No. 16 - I Am Like You / We Are All Sons Text by Craig Hella Johnson & Michael Dennis Browne (b. 1940)
I am like you Aaron and Russell When I think of you (and honestly I don't like to think about you) but sometimes I do, I am so horrified, and just so angry and confused (and scared) that you could do things to another boy- they were so cruel and so undeserved, so dark and hard and full of (I don't know)
Late one night I had a glimpse of something I recognized, just a tiny glimpse I don't even like to say this out loud, it isn't even all that true- but I wondered for a moment, am I like you? (in any way) Am I like you? (I pray the answer is no)
I bet you once had hopes and dreams, too. Some things we love get lost along the way, That's just like me--get lost along the way—
I am like you, I get confused and I'm afraid and I've been reckless, I've been restless, bored, unthinking, listless, intoxicated, I've come unhinged, and made mistakes and hurt people very much.
Sometimes I feel (in springtime, in early afternoon) the sunshine warm on my face; you feel this too (don't you?), the sunshine warm on your face. I am like you (this troubles me) I am like you (just needed to say this) Some things we love get lost along the way.
we are all sons of fathers and mothers we are all sons we are all rivers, the roar of waters we are all sons sometimes no home for us here on the earth no place to lay our heads we are all sons of fathers and mothers we are all sons

2. The Men Who Wore Lions Text by Kaveh Akbar
Over the men's heads, a bird spoke: The sun is in the mountains; above it is the moon. The thing you hoped might save you had better save you soon. The men stood, staring at the sky like desperate plants. Courage: a long shadow scattered over the horizon like salt tossed over a shoulder. Over their shoulders, the men wore lions. They wore lions like men wearing lions. Mane blended into beard, making the men glow with mannish light. The men approached the mountain that had sunshine seeping out its cracks. When they got close enough, the mountainlight illuminated each man's face. Terrible light. Inside the core of the sun inside the core of the mountain was a single white plant, six fists high, with its roots growing straight up in the air. The men never found it. The men could only see themselves. ----

Music by Scott Senko (b. 1992) Text by Levi Todd
“grip (v.)”
Old English grippan “to grip, seize, obtain “ (class I strong verb; past tense grap, past participle gripen), from West Germanic *greipanan (source also of Old High German gripfen “to rob,” Old English gripan “to seize;” see gripe (v.)).
knowing that this is likely the one time ever that me and a new strange man who I do not wish to befriend or belove will touch I feel a certain guilt when the inevitable failure happens the potential intimacy dropped and floundering on the floor like a gilled thing i rack my brain for the index of handshakes tattered and fading my fingers slipping through holes this unspoken treaty requires we both read each other estimate what kind of men we are if at all whether to extend hands and tersely shake distance kept or rather to clasp palms wound against the thumbs and slip into fingertips or perhaps just clap and bump knuckles i’m telling you they want to know whether i am one of them and what kind which ranks i march with whose allegiance i pledge and i have no answer the proof is in the fumble still i would like to give this moment the chance it deserves we could make it work i think i think we could but there are so many options and knowing which one to pick like the rosiest apple from the bushel would require me to get to know them enough to do this a second time

"Being born and raised in Honolulu, Hawai’i, I’ve been trying to think of the right words to accurately capture my feelings around the unbelievable wildfires that swept through Lahaina, Maui. Thankfully, all of my family are on a different island, and my friends who come from Maui tell me that their families are all safe, but the magnitude of the disaster and immense loss of life in my home state has weighed heavily on my mind for the past couple of weeks.
Though I know that the recovery will take many months, I am heartened and encouraged by stories of the local community who helped each other out in the immediate aftermath, before any large-scale efforts had been mounted. In the spirit of standing in solidarity with the people of Hawai’i, we offer a recording of “Hawai’i Aloha,” which is a song that everyone in Hawai’i learns and sings at some point in their life. Typically sung in a circle with joined hands, the song tells of the joy and pride we feel in our homeland of Hawai’i.
In an effort to help give aid to the recovery efforts, the artists and staff of Cantus hope you will join us in pledging financial support to the Maui Strong Fund, the Maui Food Bank, or the Hawai’i People’s Fund."

You are the reason that Cantus has been able to flourish and remain a hallmark of choral singing. Last year, Cantus released eight all-new online programs that reached audiences across all 50 states and thirteen countries. The Star Tribune commented on how, "the group remains remarkably consistent in its chemistry and expert harmonic interplay. And it's all the more admirable that this outstanding octet has chosen to not just comfort its audiences, but challenge them."
Thanks to your support, we’ve also returned to online and in-person concerts, classrooms, and recording studios, and we’re wrapping up a strategic-planning process that redoubles our commitment to serving a growing audience. Our circle continues to broaden as your support has allowed Cantus to invest in high-quality online concerts that have reached audiences across all 50 states, as well as 13 foreign countries. Reaffirming our commitment to access, Cantus will continue to offer these online concerts on a pay-what-you-can model starting at $5. As last year, single tickets for select in-person concerts will also be available on a pay-what-you-can basis from $5.
For the last 28 years, the support of our loyal donors has enabled us to serve our community. Today, as we work to rebound from the ongoing pandemic, we once again respectfully request your investment in our work in Minnesota and beyond.
Thank you for helping to keep Cantus singing.
Recorded live at the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts in December of 2021.
