What Makes A Sidekick Journal So Special For Daily Art? Willa Wanders 2025-05-02 | A Sidekick Journal in the context of art journaling typically refers to a smaller, portable, less polished and more casual companion journal that artists use alongside their main art journal or mixed media projects. What I discovered in 2025 so far what that my main art journaling in my creative life is really just that: a Sidekick Journal. Because I do a lot of big mixed media art projects, my Sidekick has become my go-to for that messy, random art journaling that I also crave! There are many reasons why an artist might keep a sidekick journal on their art table or even carry it with them in their bag:-Practice and Experimentation: It’s a place to test out techniques, color palettes, or materials before committing them to your main journal.-On-the-Go Creativity: Because it's smaller and more portable, it’s ideal for sketching or journaling while traveling or when you're away from your main workspace.-Idea Development: Many artists use it to jot down ideas, make rough sketches, or write quotes, poems, or concepts to use later.-Creative Overflow: When you have more to express than fits in your main journal spread, the sidekick can hold those extra thoughts or doodles.Common Features:-Smaller size (e.g., passport size, A6, pocket-size)-Lightweight and easy to carry-May have mixed media-friendly paper or just plain/sketch paperI'm basically using my Sidekick journal as a way to experience the fun of just letting go with scraps of paper and leftover paint and ink. Art Journal with Me: Simple, Easy, Fun! Willa Wanders 2025-05-01 | I don't know exactly how other people's brains work, but I have talked to enough artists at this point to know that I don't have the kind of brain that sees images in my imagination of something that I want to express on a page or a canvas. My brain is a blank! Here's what I do know: I love playing with art supplies and tools. And just because I don't have what I imagine is a typical artist's mind, I don't let it stop me from making a lot of art because it is clear to me that (1) I love making art and (2) making a lot of art is really good for my mental health.It has taken me a long time to let loose this much in my art journals. I'm finally at a place where I have no attachment to the outcome of any particular page. Don't get me wrong, I love a great page that comes together and looks good to me (I am human!), but what I have let go of is the time line that I work in.This journal is SLOW ART. I cannot rush this process. Roll paint onto the pages using a brayer.2. Make random dots with a paint pen.3. Write out a quote with a water soluble pencil. Lightly spray the quote to move some of the pigment and get a slightly grungy effect.4. Dip your finger into acrylic paint and then press your finger into the paper. Repeat in a pattern.5.Tear up some collage fodder (any decorated paper) or grab a pile of paper bits and audition torn pieces in your journal. When you find a match (collage bit + journal spot), attach it with permanent glue stick.6. Run the tip of a regular pencil (like a #2 or whatever pencil you have handy) randomly around on some of the pages.7. Intentional, repetitive mark making: Grab anything that will make a mark on the page and make that same mark over and over until you feel complete.8. Rub paint on with your finger.9. Dip the end of an old credit card or room key into acrylic paint and use the end of the card to make random marks in your journal. Dip again and repeat.10.Splatter one of your favorite colors of acrylic ink onto the page.

When creating mixed media collage art, choosing the right glue or adhesive is crucial for both the aesthetic outcome and the durability of your artwork. Different types of glues and adhesives are suited for different materials and techniques, so understanding each one’s properties can help you select the best option for your needs. In this video, I share with you the adhesives that I use the most in my mixed media collage art practice, along with loads of adhesive application tips and tricks that I've picked up along the way!Liked this video? General Tips for Using Adhesives in Collage Art:Test first: Always test adhesives on a scrap piece of material to ensure it won’t react negatively or alter the color of your artwork. Before applying it to your final artwork, test it on a scrap piece to ensure it dries as expected and bonds securely. Consider the weight of materials: Lighter materials like paper or fabric require different adhesives than heavier materials like metal, wood, or plastic. Match the adhesive to the type and weight of the materials you're working with. Drying time matters: Some glues set quickly (like hot glue), while others (like gel medium) require more time to dry completely.Be mindful of finish: Some adhesives leave a shiny finish (like Mod Podge or super glue), while others dry matte or clear. Matte medium provides a matte finish, while gel medium can create a glossy or textured effect. Apply in thin layers: This helps prevent bubbling and ensures a smooth finish. The One Art Journaling Secret I Wish I Had Known from the Beginning Willa Wanders 2025-02-17 | If there is one thing that I have learned over the past 5 or more years about mixed media art journaling it is this: I need to totally let go of the outcome and simply embrace the process and the materials and the having fun making a mess!!! I don't need to every come to my art journal with the idea that I am going to create a spread from start to finish. In fact, it is quite the opposite! For me, the secret to phenomenal mixed media art journaling is simply to play with one concept or material at a time and then just jump around all over the journal as I play with that idea until I feel complete. This video was over two hours of art journaling play time condensed into just over 15 minutes. I cannot wait to play more, letting go of the outcome!This method definitely requires the use of a heat tool to dry the wet paint in between applications so that you can "quickly" move between pages in your journal.Here are just a few art journaling prompts to get you started:-scrape favorite colors of acrylic paint with an old credit card-dip any mark making tool into acrylic paint and press into any page, anywhere that feels like it needs that mark-using a regular pencil, make sweeping marks around the pages of the journal-using a Stabilo All water-soluble pencil, or any water-soluble mark making tool, dip the tool into water and then write words in large type with the wet tool. Gorgeous Art Journal Pages, Zero Pressure, ALL the Benefits! Willa Wanders 2025-02-08 | Simple mark making has so many health benefits, it is hard to wrap my brain around all of it, so I asked Chat GPT . . . and now I'm even more convinced that mixed media art journaling is one of the best things I can do for my health.Just look at these gorgeous ar journal pages in my new, small Willa Journal where I am skipping all around the book as I play. No need to complete anything or make magic, just marks to soothe and heal my nervous system.
What If I Stopped Trying to Be PERFECT? Willa Wanders 2025-02-02 | Don't let this art journaling/junk journaling session fool you! This is NOT how I usually create art. Although messy, abstract art and junk journal pages are what I aspire to create, they don't come naturally to me at all! It wasn't until I accepted that this kind of art did NOT come easily enough for me, and that I could allow myself to make the kind of art more rigid, tight art that easily flowed out of me (most of the time), did I really find my groove with creating. Does that mean that I am going to forever give up trying to be that "messy" abstract expressionistic artist that I put on a pedestal as the ideal? Probably not! You'll see me here trying to explore messy art journaling once again! But since this isn't what comes most natural to me, and I've learned to accept myself a lot more than I used to, and I'm okay with making the kind of art that does come naturally to me.Even this video feels super imperfect to me, but I published it anyway. You see, there's so much that I could share about this subject, that I want to share with you about it, and this is just what feels like the tip of the iceberg! But I hit publish any way because sometimes it's a lot better to just start than it is to wait until something seems perfect.
