Instead of supporting a big box store, why not support your local arts and artists? You can find absolutely amazing deals, and create something truly beautiful and unique.
Today is the MSMT costume sale and I’m so excited to see what treasures I can find!
I’m looking for a colorful pair of tap shoes, and maybe some additional accessories for an upcoming Pirate Wedding.
But, I might also be swayed by something beautiful! Let me know if you want to see a full haul?

SO, please enjoy your pumpkins responsibly this year!
I’m planning on reviving my WHOLE pumpkin series, and would love to try a few new recipes. I’ve made sweet and savory seeds, pumpkin soup, pumpkin crackers, and pumpkin dog treats.
Maybe I’ll make my mom’s famous pumpkin bread 🤤
I can also do a video on decorating your pumpkin in a way that it’s still edible.
Then you can bring it inside, give it a good wash and then still make something yummy!
What’s your favorite pumpkin recipe?

Forests are the lungs of our planet—absorbing CO2, producing oxygen, and supporting countless species. From the ancient wisdom of the Indigenous Wabanaki people to modern-day forestry practices, this video explores the history of forest management, the critical difference between deforestation from development and sustainable practices, like those used by the paper industry, that maintain a healthy forest, as well as why FSC and SFI certifications are so important.
We’ll also touch on how Maine’s forests have been reclaimed from farmland and how this reforestation is essential for climate action. Whether you're a forest enthusiast or just love trees, this video will give you a closer look at how we can all contribute to a more sustainable future!

I think everyone should learn how to do the basics. Sew a button, darn a sock, add a quick stitch to keep up a hem.
I learned how to do all of those things in school, but I don’t think that’s a common experience?
If you can do some quick mending, where did you learn?
All those lil tricks are the easiest way to get the most out of your clothing so you don’t have to throw things away.
I think a lot of people are intimidated by sewing (especially with a machine) but honestly it’s not hard!
It’s definitely hard to master the craft and make all your own clothes etc. but quick lil fixes are pretty easy.
I’m passable at sewing, but it’s one of the things I want to improve.
My mom is EXCELLENT so I’m hoping that I can learn from her.
Last year we helped costume A Christmas Story, and sewing for theatre and for costumes, is one of the best ways to get started.
Costumes need to be sturdy and have to look good from 10’ a way. So, if your seam wobbles just a little - no one can tell from a far!
Anyways, I had a lot of fun making this Frozen costume and it was a great way to test and brush up on some of my sewing skills. It makes me want to help costume another show!
P.S. Tailors are also excellent options for fixes if it’s really just not your jam!

I stopped buying store bought vanilla extract a few years ago because it’s just SO easy to make at home.
1. You should use 1 oz vanilla beans per cup of liquor.
2. You really don’t have to use super high quality alcohol. I know that I used a pretty nice brand, but I typically use what I have on hand.
We’re normally gifted alcohol during the holiday season, but we’re not big drinkers. So we cherish the gifts in other ways. 🥰
3. Ideally this should infuse for 4-6 months. Once you have it going, you can keep adding more beans and alcohol so it’s always going on a rolling basis.
4. This will save SO much $$ and is such a higher quality product than what you buy at the grocery store. At the store you’re typically paying $5 per ounce, and this came out to $1.65 per ounce!
I think this is such a fun DIY and would love to know if you’d give it a try?

I think things are cool, and I like pretty things. But, for me, underconsumption is really just about focusing your resources, time and money, on the things that truly matter. The people and activities that fill you with joy.
In the end so much of what we buy is just… stuff.
A lot of it is crammed in cabinets, drawers, closets, and stresses us out more than anything.
To have 20 of the same water bottle that’ll wind up in a thrift store in 2 years just to be replaced by 20 of the newest IT water bottle? To buy into the next micro-trend that will be thrown away after two washes. To feel the need to consume and be stuck in this constant cycle… for what?
Not only is it unsustainable from a resource and planetary perspective, I find it’s often a symptom a of bigger internal problem. This could be a longer post but I think it mostly boils down to the fact your stuff doesn’t define you.
#goingzerowaste #underconsumptioncore #thingsidontbuyanymore #ecofriendly #deinfluencing #minimalist
And all of these swaps have saved me so much money, and simplified my life. I love that I don’t have to constantly keep buying and consuming.

I also like the french press because you can easily use too brew 1-2 cups of tea as well. And, yes, most tea bags also have plastic in them which can leach into your drink!
If you have a keurig you like, consider switching to a reusable k-cup!
What’s your morning drink ritual?

Those things don't make me feel good so I choose not to do them. I don't enjoy spending my time or my money that way, and I often feel pressure from social media to do those things even though they don't bring me joy.
Did anyone see the video earlier this year, stating that unpolished nails are gross?
Anyways, I feel as though theres and ever rising 'bar' with the beauty industry, and my thoughts on that can be it's own post if you're interested.
I believe people should be able to look and feel their best, and I know I’m approaching this topic with quite a bit of privilege, but I don’t particularly care for the major consumerism pushed on women (see so much of TT shop! (and often through the guise of wellness) to constantly have to spend and spend.
It feels like there's a new MUST HAVE beauty product or treatment that's being hawked every two weeks. I see this as a financial burden, as well as something that can be fairly wasteful.
Maybe I’ll write a long post on these connections or do a longer YT video if anyone is interested?
On a different note, having empty cabinets, drawers, and space is AWESOME! 10/10 recommend for peace of mind.

The book comes out next week!
This baked french toast is a super easy and delicious way to revive any stale bread.
INGREDIENTS:
Here I had about three-four cups of stale bread
- 2 Cups of Milk (I used soy)
- 1/4 cup of oat, almond flour (I was out and used arrowroot powder which I also loved!)
- 2 Tablespoons of maple syrup
- 1 Tablespoon of Vanilla extract (I used my own homemade one!)
- 1 Teaspoon of ground cinnamon
- Pinch of nutmeg and salt
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Revive your stale bread if you can’t cut it well
2. Whisk all of the ingredients together except the bread
3. Add the bread in and let soak for at least 15 minutes
4. Spray your baking dish
5. Pour everything into the baking dish
6. Bake at 350 for about 20 minutes

Having tons of excess stuff doesn’t make us any happier, in fact, excess clutter and being surrounded by things you don’t need leads to stress.
I love that under consumption core is trending right now! Which really is just normal life.
I don’t need a massive kitchen. I don’t need a bunch of rooms in my house that I don’t use. I don’t need massive amazon or shein hauls! I don’t want clutter filling up my life robbing me of my peace, joy, and fiancial security.
None of that is normal and I hate that so much of social media has tried to convince us that it is.

This is one of Justin's favorite recipes, and is perfect for the cake that was a little stale after a recent BBQ get together.
This also works in a pinch if your cake is too dry or just stuck to the bottom of the pan. You can always save it with this recipe!
If your cake is too dry - add a bit more frosting
If your cake is too wet - add less frosting
I don’t really like icing, so this cake to icing ratio was pretty perfect!
PRO TIP:
If you have a fully iced cake, you can wipe some off or just make sure to pop the smashed mixture into the fridge for an hour or two so it can harden and stay together during the dipping process.
Make Cake Truffles (Or Cake Pops without sticks)
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Mash all of the cake together and roll it into balls.
2. Dip the balls into melted chocolate
3. Decorate how you like (I usually skip this step)
4. Pop them in the fridge for an hour to harden, and store them in the fridge
5. ENJOY!!!
So, this is Justin’s favorite recipe, has there been one in the series you’ve particularly enjoyed?

CHECK OUT MY FIRST BOOK! :D 101 Ways to Go Zero Waste bit.ly/3rHvGhe
I’ve been offline for the past two weeks because, I’ve had a concussion and looking at screens made me really dizzy and nauseas... which made it really hard to do my job 😅
I’m sorry to keep you waiting but here’s the big reveal!
It turned out even better than I had planned. I’m creating a full dressing space in this little nook so it’s the perfect place to finish putting together an outfit.
I do want to cut some more shelves to help make this space even more efficient, as there’s a lot of dead space around the shoes. But, everything fits with room to spare so it’s not a top priority.
I’m going to add a really narrow buffet style piece in the room for makeup and hair and for when we have guests over since we all share one bathroom.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this little sustainable closet organization series!
The main way we kept it eco friend was USING WHAT WE HAVE! We spent $0 organizing this space, and $14 on the last closet.
I think it looks equally good, and I didn’t need to buy 100s of dollars worth of plastic bins to achieve it, what do you think?

Clean smells like nothing. Fake rain smells disgusting.
All scent beads are going to do is coat your clothes in ‘fragrance’ which is going to attract more dirt and bacteria which will make it even stinkier so you wash it with more scent beads to mask the problem which keeps making the problem worse and round and round we go.
Anyways, let me know if you want a separate video with details on how to strip your thrift finds?
And, I will continue to fight against the scent bead insanity.
So this is my thrift flip - turning thrifted curtains into a pool cover up! It’s one of the easiest projects I’ve tackled, and it worked!
I’m don’t really think it’s my style. Maybe for resort wear? But alas, poor Yorrick, at a resort, I am not.
But, it was fun to make, and it’s about the journey right?
So, if you see some lace cafe curtains in the thrift store, now you know, in under three hours (assuming you don’t need the first 20 for an intense washing) YOU TOO can make a beach cover up. Huzzah!
What do you think? Would you give it a try?

Pre-orders are super important for authors, and this book takes:
- an in depth look at the food waste problem
- how to store your produce and keep it fresh for weeks
- how to meal plan
- 2 fun food waste personality quizzes (one of my favorite parts)
- a guide on what to do with less than peak produce featuring all of your favorite scraptastic recipes!!
THE RECIPE:
This is one of my favorite meals and a dish I often bring to potlucks because the miso maple dressing is really THAT good! I add in quinoa to make it a heartier salad.
If you haven’t tried roasting cabbage, you must! I wasn’t a huge cabbage fan until I started roasting it, and now I could easily eat the whole tray.
I roast mine at 400 F for 20-30 minutes and it’s golden brown.
THE dressing:
- 2-3 Tablespoons Miso paste
- Juice of 1 big lemons
- 1 teaspoon of maple syrup or to your taste
- Salt, Pepper
I do this to taste and don’t have an exact recipe, but its really hard to mess up so give a go!
So, where are all my cabbage fans??

This awkward nook is 9’ x 4’ and it’s right outside of the bathroom before you get to the porch. I think it’s intended to be a linen closet, but we have a small closet in our bathroom to store towels, toilet paper, and other beauty products.
We organized that closet first and you can see that process in a separate video. Our bedroom closet is less than half of this closets size so we decided to move our shoes and bulkier items to the hall closet to free up more space for actual clothes in the bedroom.
Slowly but surely, I’m turning my house into a space that is functional and beautiful, and tackling it in a sustainable way! This hall closet makeover cost us $0, because we were able to use what we have!

I’m so excited to be partnered with the Paper and Packaging Board’s How Life Unfolds Campaign® (@howlifeunfolds) to celebrate being a papertarian.
Papertarians understand the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling. Making sure we recycle properly, focus on sustainable forestry, and upcycling when you have the chance to get the full life out of any product that comes into your home.
I think using shoe boxes are the perfect storage containers and drawer separators. As an added bonus, the lids make the perfect trays for corralling items for more shallow drawers.

We have a small, old home, with a bit of an odd layout... at least for modern standards. But, I know that with some creative solutions we can make it super functional to fulfill all our needs.
I am determined to try and achieve this in a super eco-friendly way. I’m not going out and buying a bunch of brand new plastic bins, but instead using what I have.
Upcycling and shopping secondhand for the WIN!
I’m so happy to be tackling this multi-day project in partnership with @howlifeunfolds to celebrate being a papertarian.
Papertarians understand the positive impact small, everyday choices have on our forests and the environment. It’s about choosing paper products and practicing proper recycling habits.
I’ve been a #HowLifeUnfoldsPartner for three years, and I’m so excited to continue choosing the paper-based products that fit in my low-waste lifestyle.

Call my traditional, but I kind of like all of the trim being the same color to tie the whole house together.
Because we live in an old house the rooms can feel very isolated and disjunct so be keeping the trim the same it helps the house feel like a unit instead of isolated rooms.
I think color drenching is beautiful, but I’m just not sure that’s the move for me. The bathrooms are the only spaces in the house that have different color trim.
I thought about making the trim gray in this little landing to match the bathroom, but I think that would be out of left field? What do you think?
These green tiles are the same as our kitchen, and I like them so I’m thinking of painting the walls a complimentary color to the tile to make it more cohesive?
Would love some feedback! I’m also considering getting a really narrow buffet cabinet to provide just a little bit more storage and to make the space feel complete without hindering the walkways.

I’ve teamed up with @sodexogroup and @sodexousa to bring you a zero waste cauliflower fried rice using the WHOLE cauliflower leaves and all, and to celebrate their sustainable food barometer checking off all the boxes:
- Celebrating local produce
- A zero waste recipe that reduces food waste, and utilizes all parts of the plant
- And a balanced plant forward plate
The leaves are a good source for both fiber and vitamin C, and they taste kind of like if romaine and kale had a baby.
You could use the leaves to make a delicious salad, roast them into crunchy chips, braise them or sauté them like in this recipe.
I do cut away the toughest parts of the stems and the stalk. But for the more tender inner stems, I thinly slice them and add them in as well.
Ingredients:
1 head of cauliflower finely chopped + the leaves
2 cups of rice (leftover / day old rice is best!)
1 cup of additional veg (I used zucchini, red bell pepper, and onions)
4 cloves of garlic minced
2 Tablespoons of soy sauce
1 Tablespoon of sesame oil
2 Tablespoons of avocado oil for frying
(I also added in some leftover sesame tofu I made to make it a more complete meal)
Instructions:
1. Add half your avocado oil to the pan, and sautee your vegetables til tender, and set them aside
2. In the same pan add the other half of your avocado oil, and your garlic.
3. Once the garlic is fragrant, add your leftover rice. Allow it to brown and add back in your vegetables.
4. Stir in the soy sauce, sesame oil, and turn off the heat
5. Add in the green leaves, and stir. (The heat from the rice will wilt them perfectly)
6. Serve and enjoy!

I have a color coded towel system to keep everything separate, and for the dirty jobs like the bathroom - they get a nice lil spa treatment.
I use cloth towels with a wide weave because they do the best job at absorbing moisture rather than just pushing it around.
Boil your cotton cloths for about 15 minutes and sprinkle in a little bit of baking soda.
Then rinse them in cool water. I place mine outside to dry. The sun helps with stains, and on a warm day just dries them super fast.
After they’re dry, I throw them into the hamper and wash them like a regular load of clothes.
If you have issues with using cloth towels because they’re not absorbing moisture OR they’re kind of stinky etc. DO THIS!
(especially if you’re using homemade laundry ‘detergent’ - I can do a-whole-nother post on that, but it does’t work. It’s laundry soap and the soap will get trapped into the fibers.
The soap will attract more dirt and oil causing it harder to get things clean and build a barrier preventing your cloths from working effectively.
Stripping your cloth towels in this way, should give you a reset!
Have you ever stripped your towels before?

I’m not sure I can add anymore storage there without affecting the existing shelves.
I’m worried that if I put towel hooks in there the towels won’t dry since the closet isn’t ventilated.
Maybe I could use the outlet to put a little wall sconce there?
This was a fun project! The editing was chaotic, as I’ve never filmed this type of video before. I’ve learned a lot and will make sure the next episode is a more enjoyable viewing experience.
But, you know what’s an even more enjoyable viewing experience?????? MY BATHROOM CLOSET.
I actually want to spend time in there! Everything has a place.
I threw away a small grocery bags worth of super expired products (sunscreen and mostly empty skincare), but other than that - everything you saw now has a place.
And, we were able to move the towels and toilet paper into that closet freeing up our hall closet for a soon to be makeover!
There’s nothing really in there other than our laundry hamper and our suitcases. But since we have the world’s tiniest bedroom closet our next goal is to make that part of our dressing space!
I’m so excited to feel like we’re finally truly settling into our home.
I’ve moved 24 times in my life, and I’ve resisted settling and buying things to help make this space more comfortable because it feels fruitless when you’re just going to move again soon anyways.
But, guess what! I’m not moving - so let the settling begin.

One of the things that’s held me back on organizing my home for years is that it’s going to create some waste.
But, what am I supposed to do with the few tampons and pads I’ve had since college? Do those things expire?
What about expired medication I’ve held on to because I’ve been worried about proper disposal.
Expired sunscreen!? Learned about that one the hard way.... Note to self - never stock up on sunscreen.
There’s a lot of imperfection here and I’ve been scared of showing this to the internet, but I think it’s important.
There’s NO SUCH THING as perfect zero waste living. The fact is, I try my absolute best to reduce, reuse, recycle. And seeing that I haven’t organized in years - this actually isn’t too bad.
And, now that things are organized, I’m going to be able to better assess what I need and already have.
I’m so excited for part 2 where I go thrifting for some organizational baskets!

It’s really some small changes. Prioritizing walking, biking, and carpooling over driving. Supporting small businesses, shopping seccond hand but the biggest thing too me - that has improved my life so much for the better is community and sharing!
Want to have a fun dance party with your friends? Swap and borrow dresses. Throw a vegan dinner party and exchange recipes. Want to have a movie night, use real glasses for the drinks!
It really is lots of small stuff that’s really not that revolutionary.
Here are the 10 sustainable swaps in my day:
1. Plastic free shower bombs @gogorefill
2. Small local biz!
3. Secondhand shopping at another small business
4. Borrowed nail polish because I only needed a little bit and buying a whole bottle would’ve been a waste
5. refillable deodorant @wildrefill
6. refillable makeup @elatecosmetics
7. compostable floss @getcocofloss
8. Refilling my giant 7 yr old waterbottle @kleankanteen
9. Supplements from certified B Corp @megafood
10. Carpool!

I mean really, when stitching up a hole the worst thing that can happen is you have to unstitch it and you’re left with the same exact hole you started with!
I mess up my repairs all the time. I am learning as I go and they keep getting better. And, while they’re still not perfect they make me smile, it’s fun to learn new skills, and I can keep another piece out of the landfill.
What’s in your repair pile? Anything you’re going to tackle this weekend?

If you only want to make one swap when it comes to reducing your waste for Earth month, this is the one I’d like to encourage you to make.
Diverting food waste from landfills is so important and composting is so incredibly beneficial on multiple levels!
And, with the @getlomi app, I can see the positive impact and how many pounds of food waste and CO2 I’m saving.

Save that energy and use your voice to write to major corporations and politicians demanding action.
Trash is only one part of the picture! Emissions, land use, ethical practices, regenerative farming - there’s so much more to take into consideration.
Composting is wonderful! But, make sure you’re using it as a last resort. Eat everything you can - it still takes A LOT of resources to produce that food!
Don’t over buy - EVEN IF ITS SECONDHAND! Try not to consume more than you need.
Don’t buy something new, even if it’s an eco-friendly purchase, when what you have can still be used or repaired.

I think there's some stuff I've done a really good job with and some stuff I've done not a good job with... but I'm excited to be back here on YouTube to reignite some sustainability and zero waste content.
My goals for this channel are to create a zero waste pantry and do a cost comparison on those items, create a data driven sustainable and minimal wardrobe, to recreate my zero waste systems I had in California here in Maine, and to have fun!

My next question is whether or not this would work in a baking dish to clean my oven! That’s the next thing I’m going to tackle.
After you’ve finished with them in the microwave, add them to a pot with a few additional ingredients like rosemary and vanilla. It’s a natural air freshener that will make your home smell amazing!
Then you can compost.

I saw this hack on TT last year, and I don’t remember who posted about it. But, I squirreled away this little nugget to try next time I needed a hand.
Because of high oil content in lotion, getting the bottles clean can be tough even with a wider neck bottle.
The rice worked SO well as a scouring agent. So next time you need help cleaning some hard to reach places you have to give this a try!
