Extending the Link: Ke Teng, Le Kae? (I Am Here, Where Are You?) Extending The Link 2026-05-06 | “I Am Here, Where Are You?” takes a closer look at the conditions of healthcare access in Mokhotlong, Lesotho. The title of the film, translated from the Sesotho phrase “Ke teng, le kai?”, reflects a common greeting heard around Lesotho, a greeting that reminds one another to be present with people around you, to be rooted in community. Mokhotlong faces challenges when accessing healthcare, whether it be from the varying road conditions and geography, expired medication or difficulty accessing quick transportation. We recognize these challenges impacting the health and livelihood of citizens in Mokhotlong and are dedicated to uplifting voices and stories from community members we met in Mokhotlong.
Mottainai: Everything in Between Extending The Link 2025-05-01 | Mottainai: Everything in Between addresses the impact of fast fashion in Japan, caused by Westernization and historical industrialization. It highlights the cultural losses that have followed. The rise of consumerism and mass-produced clothing in Japan has significantly affected traditional practices, making the preservation of Japanese culture less common in modern times. Over six days, we interviewed Thrift Shop A to Z Wholesale and Old Industrial to uncover the reality behind these changes.In fact, many Japanese people blend their traditional culture with Western influences as a way to adapt and grow. You can witness this contrast by visiting the bustling Shibuya crossing, the quiet countryside of Chiba, and the peaceful streets of Kawasaki.

Diverse Bodies, Beautiful Minds: Voices of Disability Activism Extending The Link 2022-04-27 | The interactive film gallery titled Diverse Bodies, Beautiful Minds: Voices of Disability Activism will include insights and stories about this year's ETL theme, Disability Activism. Through four short films, we will showcase the voices of individuals that identify as disabled and non-disabled - establishing a narrative of authenticity and action.This film uses no alternative footage, but rather focuses on the footage of the interviewers as a means to emphasize the need to focus on the powerful insights each interviewer has to bring. Additionally, this film intends to find alternative ways in which we can incorporate accessibility through the use of captioning, audio captions, and ASL interpretations.

Amplifying Native Student Voices & Stories Extending The Link 2021-04-16 | This panel with Extending the Link and the Indigenous Students Association was an intentional space for sharing and listening to Native students’ stories and experiences at CSBSJU and will conclude with a call to urgent and needed action from the Indigenous Student Association. We invite you to listen to these stories alongside other students, faculty, and staff at this event. Stories allow for healing, truth, and reconciliation. The first step towards decolonizing our community is to listen to the experiences of Native students who are living and learning here on our campuses.This is the FIRST time that there has been a space dedicated to amplifying the voices of Native students attending CSBSJU. This panel was a space for vulnerability, for storytelling, and for sharing openly and honestly. However, storytelling ONLY leads to change when listening leads to action. ISA will conclude this panel with a call to action, and it is our duty and responsibility as CSBSJU community members to make sure that this call is prioritized. Lo$e Line 3 Extending The Link 2021-03-30 | Campus Ministry, Institute for Women’s Leadership and Climate Justice Club banded together to protest construction of a pipeline through Indigenous lands. They tabled, participated in rallies and held a candlelit vigil. The following video is created by the production team of Extending the Link. In 2018, Extending the Link released Nibi Eteg, a documentary illuminating the cultural and spiritual significance of water. As students organized to stop the pipeline through the cultural and spiritual channels, ETL saught to uplift the story.
Extending The Link: Relay for Our Water Extending The Link 2020-11-14 | On September 30, 2019, Extending the Link partnered with the Environmental Studies Department, Climate Justice Club, Extending the Link and Institute for Women’s Leadership to host a "Water Walk" in conjunction with the "Relay for Our Water" project. For four months, with a variety of organizations and all over the state of Minnesota, the "Relay for Our Water" project transported a pint of the water. The water was blessed by Ojibwe women at the Mississippi Headwaters where the relay initiated on Aug. 3, 2020. Extending the Link partnered in this project in continuation of our commitment to protecting the cultural and spiritual significance of water which is displayed in our 2018 documentary, Nibi Eteg: Where the Water Is.
Convivir- A Vehicle for Education Extending The Link 2020-05-16 | ETL creates annual documentary films an undertold social justice issues that affect our international community. Our motto is “Think Globally, Act Locally,” meaning, our mission is to inform our viewers of international, undertold social issues, while bringing it back to our local communities. This year, for our 13th documentary, we focused the film on access to transportation and how that impacts individuals’ abilities to access education and other beneficial programs. We spent the year studying how individuals, both in Arequipa, Peru and Minnesota, cope with the inability to find or deal with the lack of transportation.

What is ETL? Extending The Link 2015-10-12 | Extending the Link (ETL) is a student-organized documentary film team from the College of St. Benedict and St. John's University. ETL has produced eight documentaries over the past eight years on a variety of under-told social justice issues. Here is a quick compilation of our past projects and a glimpse of our future.
Extending the Link: Obbasa Ain Gállit - We Continue, 2015 Extending The Link 2015-09-27 | Extending the Link's eighth documentary highlights indigenous issues through the lens of the Sámi people. The Sámi are the last recognized indigenous group in Europe. They reside in their homeland, Sápmi, which is comprised of Northern Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia, but they also have a diaspora in North America due to a small group of reindeer herders being paid to immigrate to Alaska during the time of the gold rush.This film focuses on the struggles the Sámi have faced both in their past as well as the in the modern world; highlighting language loss, land loss, cultural identity, and their relationship to indigenous people around the world. However, the Sámi have persevered, taken a stand against injustices, and continue fighting to claim their full rights as individuals and as an indigenous people.

Extending the Link: Ger Kler - A Journey of Untold Strength, 2014 Extending The Link 2014-05-09 | Extending the Link takes on their seventh project by telling the story of Karen refugees living in Thailand and Minnesota.Inspired by a Karen student from their own college community, Extending the Link traveled to Thailand in December, 2013 to investigate the condition of the Karen refugee population. The team learned that most of the Karen refugees in Thailand are displaced persons who fled from Myanmar after facing persecution. Members of the Karen community in Thailand and Myanmar alike worry about the future of their families as they lack security and stability. For some of the Karen, an alternative opportunity comes by way of being accepted as a refugee to the United States. Currently, more than 7,000 Karen are living in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota. The documentary focuses on three Karen refugee camps in Thailand as well as the Karen community in metropolitan Minnesota.
