So firstly, I want to say, this video is dedicated to the lovely Zaneta for pitching the idea to us in the first place! I hope this video is everything you had wished from us. ♥ This whole process has been such a journey. It was huge learning experience for me since I have never actually done a collab and we had various obstacles in the way including different editing software, quality problems, timezones, etc (and this song just generally being hard as fuck to vid). Consequently, it was sort of a very unconventional and fascinating way of working for me. We wanted this to be a very organic and hands-on experience. I can say with pride that there is practically not a single section of this video that we both did not touch, or give some kind of input on. Working with Briony has been absolutely incredible, she is such a talented and inspiring vidder. After finally seeing it in December, I had some mixed feelings about it. I found the film to be quietly captivating and visually mesmerizing, but lacking some of the more explicitly presented themes in the book. So much is said in its subtlety, but so much of that can also be lost on viewers—I think, at least—if they aren’t already familiar with the book.That being said, I don’t mean to imply that this film doesn’t stand as an outstanding achievement on its own, because it certainly does, but I just think that book adaptations are always tricky and anyone who’s read Call Me By Your Name can certainly understand why it might be a particularly difficult text to adapt.But one of the overarching themes in both the film and novel is the notion that for Elio, his desires, experiences, and the way he perceives the world around him have forever been shaped by the events of his summer with Oliver. Those few weeks had afforded them both so many new experiences but at the same time, made all Elio was already familiar with—the sights, sounds, tastes, and all the mundanities of every summer he’d ever experienced in that house, suddenly become new. With this rather long but lyrically sparse song choice, I tried to draw on some of these ideas. I’m not entirely confident about the final result (which seems to be the case with everything I upload of late) and I know that the first half is rather lethargic, but I think the film is this way as well.I did feel a bit weird leaving out the obligatory “call me by your name” scene, but it honestly just didn’t have a place in this vid and I don’t see this as being my last anyway. This is something that both Even and Isak have struggled with this season. The way Even reacted to Isak talking about his mom’s mental illness in the locker room; the way Isak reacted to finding out the truth about Even, they were both afraid and confused and hurt by the recoil.Going back to watch that locker room scene after recent events has been heartbreaking, because already then, Even had made his decision to leave, but at the same time he wanted nothing more than to stay.This is something I think Isak is struggling with right now. He’s impressionable and always assumes the worst, and for some reason he has it in his head that the best thing to do is stay away from Even (thanks to our lovely Sonja).But they need each other, I believe they both feel a sense of groundedness in one another, so I wanted to make this video about that―how they both need each other to hold the gun but have both been afraid to. I think there’s an aspect of fear in every relationship, to give yourself up, to become vulnerable is scary.
