Mega Man Zero 2: Return of the Challenger
updated
Hopefully this video will also be a decent resource for aspiring runners hoping to contribute to keeping this scene of stylish gameplay alive, for I, and others like X MaverickHunter, will not be around forever. The absence of HideOfBeast speaks for itself, as things weren't quite the same without him, and it's a shame that he's mostly forgotten at this point because he was one of the best creators in this scene. My only one desire is that when the day comes for me to finally retire the Magnus Zero channel, there will be more people to pick up where I left off, and even take it to greater heights.

Both clips in this video employ the same strat of relying more on Neons than the original speedrun strategy. The first clip is more efficient/faster than the second clip, which is mainly just me trying to squeeze in some extras with other weapons for mere swagger points.
As per tradition, when I'm not exactly feeling all that good in life, I turn to a Mega Man game to unwind and reset myself. Recently picked X3 back up after all these years, and suddenly found myself enjoying it like I did when I was a kid. Fast forward some more after refreshing my memory with some speedrun tech, and now... I'm slowly becoming enamored with this game again, considering tech like Neon Jumps have a lot more usage compared to X2, and the weapons are better than what I initially gave them credit for (I didn't even know Tornado Fang disabled an enemy's hurtbox for about a second, for example).
This video's more or less a sample of what I've been up to for the past week, as I've been improving my skill level in X3 on my actual SNES (as you've seen, I'm playing on the Super Famicom cartridge because english X3 is too goddamned expensive). Given I was already familiar with Neons due to X2 (I was just bad at doing them consistently prior), it only took me two days to fully master them here, so it opens up the window of opportunity for more fun shenanigans.
If you're confused about how the hell the mini-boss melted in like two seconds, it can be combo'd through its i-frames. So the Neon simply gives X the right height to get in, spam as many Frost Shields as you can (this can easily fail if you mistime the air dash after the Neon).
Now, for info you might be wondering about:
- like I said above, Tornado Fang disables hitboxes (like how elemental weakenesses in the Zero/ZX games does), so any shenanigans you've seen with X jumping through enemies is because of that.
- If you're wondering why the third screwdriver enemy didn't spawn, it's because if you time the Frost Shield and dash jump just right after the second one dies, the third one doesn't spawn, giving you enough time to switch to Tornado Fang preemptively.
- ...Also, yes, before you comment, I know the Zero Project exists.
- For those wondering if this video hints at a Weapon Master for the game, no. Don't be hasty. I'm not confirming anything here. This channel is still on indefinite hiatus for my main projects until announced otherwise.
Zero can exploit him with Ensuizan (what CAN'T Zero do...?), but X without Ultimate Armor was out of luck since he can't break the game in half as much as his partner can. Well, at least when it comes to High Max, cheatless X can massacre him even better than Zero with Blade's air dash. The only reason X isn't taking contact damage is because the dash's tiny hitbox is hitting the bottom tip of High Max's hitbox, thus avoiding damage. This is somewhat tricky to loop because it's easy to mess it up, but even if you get hit, you don't have to blitz him this fast. Blade Armor's bulky enough to prevent you from dying before he does. Plus, this gets much easier with a little bit of practice.
As for Guard Shell glitch, this video doesn't show how to properly use it. I made an updated version of strat two here, which is faster: youtu.be/hplALCBoQcw
While Tengu Man's autoscrolling is the low point of this stage, the actual platforming segments make up for it, as they're the perfect playground for MM8's most advanced tech. Mega Ball jumping is such an underrated tech in the Mega Man series. Combine it with some of the best lagless hotswapping in the series before MM11 came around, there's several combinations with the robot master weapons. The first four stages are only a taste of what a full arsenal looks like (I'm refraining from showing any footage from later stages due to a... secret video).

It's not as difficult as exaggerated, but the way the Mole enemies work in this stage is intriguing enough to warrant a more analytical discussion. This video will break down their patterns that most aren't privy to, and provide practical solutions to trivialize the stage for ease of replayability.
I play this on original hardware with the authentic Japanese copy of Rockman & Forte (with a hard modded SNES to play Super Famicon carts).

Putting it in simpler terms, GBI is a far superior version of the Gameboy Player's boot disc. It still requires the actual Gameboy Player Hardware, which still counts as "Original Hardware. The GB Player is a legitimate Gameboy Advance.
If you've seen my last video, the difference in quality is night and day. I'm still using my RetroTINK 5x Pro + Prism Component cable setup, which further boosts the image quality up to 1080p. The game itself is force scaled internally in Swiss (the Gamecube homebrew) at 240p while using the High-Fidelity version of GBI, which further gives it sharper quality.
What I was most impressed with is how this allows me to FINALLY record in a proper 4:3 aspect ratio that fills the screen vertically. The reason why you saw the boxed in gameplay for all these years is because of how the forced stretching kills quality in emulation. Without a stronger PC, I'm limited to how I can present my gameplay in the emulators. But thanks to GBI and the RT5X, I can finally show my gameplay in a fuller screen (Ultimate Disrespect IV will still be on the emulator though, since that was all planned and recorded before all this).
Now, there's still room for improvement. However, due to limitations of my recording equipment, I can't push this as far as it can go just yet. Or to put it more accurately, my PC + capture card is unable to output what my TV can. I have a 4K TV, and since both my PC and capture card caps at 1080p, I can't show off how this looks in 4k. Because trust me, the game looks stunning in the highest quality. One day, when I can afford to replace my outdated equipment, we'll see glorious high-level gameplay in 4K on this channel...
But I'm content with this for now. All of my other MM games on original hardware looks absolutely beautiful with my RT5X in 1080p. More serious content will be using original hardware from now on.
I'd like to give a special thanks and shoutout to @NayruSSB for making me aware of GBI. Without them, I'd still be using the ol' crusty Gameboy Player Boot disc, lol.
What you see right now isn't finalized look of the footage. There are still tweaks to be made on the 5x's settings to make the pixels more sharper, and there's some downscaling methods that I can try. Obviously, you can't expect the original hardware to look as good as the Legacy Collection. But I can get it to look pretty damn close once I learn more about my options.
I've been wanting to replay all of my classic/retro games on their respective original hardware, but was held back by the limitations of current technology not displaying it clean enough. That was until I invested into a 5x Pro and slowly bought component cables for all of my systems.
I seriously would not recommend investing into a retro setup like this since it gets expensive (the scaler alone costs $325... pretty much the cost of a modern gen console). And it makes no sense to buy a scaler if you're only trying to play one or a few games in high quality from original hardware. I only justified it because I have multiple old consoles, and I prefer original hardware over emulation/collections. Perhaps I'll go more in-depth with this sort of thing in future commentary videos.
Either way, I do want go back to original hardware for any gameplay I use going forward on this channel. This includes the Zero 2 remastered run (whenever it'll be).
There are more comedic skits this time around (and an actual abridged, intentionally botched story, I guess). For those who do not wish to watch them, here are the timestamps to surf through them. The text in parenthesis will tell you where battle clips are:

So, if y'all ask me "y u no use Gater" in future videos, there's your answer. I'm just using it right now to speed up my V3 Navi grind to open up the WWW Area 3 gate. And on my way to another navi, Air Man showed up again to this... surprise to his face, haha.
Also, for the algorithm's sake, the footage is from the Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection.
DashAtk * in the default chip slot, this early in the game, is so silly.
Below are some timestamps for each user's individual question. That way, if you watched this video only for the question you asked, you can jump right to it (because 43 minutes is an enormous time commitment... at least for me, lol). And, if your name isn't in the timestamps, then that can save you some time as well. So, if you didn't watch, just know that if I did not feature your question, I'll go back to the community post and comment a reply to it later in my spare time.

Honestly, looking back at this video, I'm a bit afraid to push the publish button on this because I'm definitely not my usual chill and collected self, and I did this mostly unscripted. And like I mentioned in the video, I'm extremely uncomfortable opening up like this so personally, especially on the internet where any random a-hole can use my vulnerable state against me. But I'm taking that risk because sometimes, it can help another person out by just hearing that someone else is dealing with something similar in their life. I'll likely not pay much attention to the comments on this video because I'd rather not emotionally distress myself further. If this video related to and resonated with at least one person, that's all I care about.
I don't think I need to point out the obvious, that I was livid while recording this, so... just keep that in mind before you comment. Cruel things will fly out of my mouth that I normally wouldn't while in that angry state. I'm in a calmer mind space now, and I'll just move forward from here.
DISCLAIMER: Despite painting my brother in a terrible light here, do NOT respond to this rashly, such as trying to identify him or anything to harass him (because the internet can be downright creepy with their detective skills...). With how little of my life I share, I know that won't even be an issue, but I just wanted to point that out. I can protect myself, but I still appreciate anyone who'd potentially feel that strongly about it. I'm just venting here, nothing more.
As for the Thumbnail art, it's done by an artist named Meka/Indesign. If the original artist sees this and does not want their art used without permission, please e-mail me at the business e-mail I have in my About tab on my channel page and I'll remove it.
"Why even do this, then?" you may ask. Well, if I didn't, I'd have a mob asking me why I skipped Z2, and no matter how many facts I bring to the table, I'll continue to get pestered about it. So, I suffered through this and made... something so I can just move on to more interesting videos.

"What is Weapon Master," you ask? It's a no damage run where the special weapons have favoritism over the Mega Buster (X-Buster for the X series), and they're utilized for high efficiency gameplay. NOTE: Weapon Master DOES NOT BAN THE BUSTER. Obviously, you need it in the beginning when you have little to no weapons, but as the game progresses, the less you'll see it. An exception is the Mr. X/Wily stages, as weapons do not replenish between the stages and you have to be more resourceful. You'll see increased buster use in those stages for energy conservation purposes, but the weapons are still front-loaded.
Yes, I know the audio and sound effects sound mono and a little muffled compared to the original. That's Complete Work's fault, not me, so don't bug me about it lol.
I did not use the Complete Works remixes for this run because the community's always divisive about music. So, I played the original mode to not get caught up in that flame war.
With all of that said, enjoy the movie!

- No Damage on Xtreme Mode. This mode has more enemies and some of them are faster, which... makes getting the MEH rank harder considering you're supposed to kill as little enemies as possible per stage.
- Acquire the MMH (or MEH) rank by the end of the game: I'll explain what that is and this game's asinine scoring system at the end of the description.
- I applied an old Alia Silence patch, so that's why you aren't seeing her. Remember that this was BEFORE the X5 Addendum existed, so yes, I already know about that project.
- I omitted Saber Dash Canceling (SDC) for more complex cancel techniques. I get it. Everyone likes seeing it shred bosses. Well, I don't, personally. It's boring to me when there are variants that allow for more clean cancels and flow more naturally into Zero's learned techniques. Besides, Skiver's weapon disables SDC anyway, and this isn't trying to be an optimal speedrun, so my logic was that I might as well get used to crouching cancels and reverse sabers since it's forced upon you.
A Crouch cancel is when you interrupt Zero's three-hit combo by pressing down via ducking. Since it functions similarly to dash cancel, you can manipulate this to your advantage. If you press the opposite direction during the second hit of the combo, Zero will turn around with the horizontal slash, creating an extra hit. You can crouch here (and turn BACK around near-instantaneously) to loop it. It's less prone to input failure compared to SDC (since you won't have to worry about dashing into enemies by mistake), and it's more fun than just mashing two buttons to win, in my opinion.

X5's Stupid Ranking System Explained:
I want to know which pinhead thought it was a good idea to reflect the scoring system on the story's urgency. Yeah, story-wise, X and Zero aren't trying to waste time fighting everyone. Gameplay-wise, forcing the player to ignore half of the stage is utter lunacy.
Yes, the fewer enemies you kill, the better your score. And the faster you clear the stage, the better your score. Obviously, damage factors in as well. However, here's where it REALLY gets dumb. You know how the Zero series gives you a believable time limit that's different for each mission? Welp, X5 said screw that, we require you to get the same time on EVERY. DAMN. STAGE.
The absolute best scoring for each stage is 1 minute clearance, 40 or less enemies killed, and... I forgot the damage threshold, but I don't care about that. Also, touching Sigma Viruses impact your score for some stupid reason. Anyways, tell me, lovely viewers: how are you supposed to beat Duff's stage, which is 99% slow asf autoscroller, IN ONE MINUTE? You can't? Well, too bad. The game says you suck for being incapable of achieving the impossible! That's why in stages like that, I literally did not care about time or how many enemies I killed because the final score will be at its lowest anyway, as there's no way to clear that stage in under 5 minutes.
So, the only way to bypass this is to reserve the shortest stages for last, or make sure you have a PA rank before fighting X or Zero. I hate being subject to linearity and forced to speedrun the way everyone else does, so I opted for option 2 so I could have a more unique route (because yes, do not use this video as a guide to MEH. What I'm doing is not optimal).
Don't ask me what MEH or MMH means because I don't even know, lmao. All I know is that it's the highest rank, and that was the goal of this run.
TL;DR, X5 sucks and I'm never doing a MEH run again.

In mid-July, I had this crazy idea to attempt my greatest challenge yet, and I picked Zero 3 for it. The footage may not look like a big challenge run with crazy restrictions (because it isn't anything special on the surface level). It's just something that I never even considered doing before. But given the difficulty of this challenge, I'm leery about giving out specifics because I still have reservations about my ability to pull it off (thus not wanting to confirm anything to prevent giving you all false expectations).
Members of my private discord server already know what this project is (and if you are someone from the server watching this, do not spoil it in the comments, please. I'm not joking). Still, as far as public knowledge is concerned, I'll be keeping it under the wraps until I'm 100% confident. You're free to speculate, but obviously, I won't engage in speculative conversation to keep things fun.

Of course, scene skip makes Zero 3 Bosses 100% scripted (unlike Z4 where scene skip doesn't reset the RNG to 0 anymore), so that's why Childre is always conveniently in the right places that I want him to be in. Going off that same principle, this can be utilized outside his battle just for flashiness's sake. He stuns easily from his weakness, which is why Soul Launcher is super effective in disabling him.
The general combo is the same in each of these clips until it's time to follow up after the first Soul Launcher trap. Depending on how fast you drain his HP, the slightest delay in your execution can cause him to go off-script and do something you don't want him to. Thus, these are different takes on what his AI will decide to do after your slight fumbles, and I have a counter for each one. These are by no means the only actions he can do after going off script, but these are just the typical ones to expect.
Don't get your jammies ruffled. Just a joke at the end of the day.
