Borrowed Musical theme for Sunset Riders Please help identify! First Victor Monarch Record Ever-Limberger Cheese-7-Burt Shepard MusicProjectX 2011-11-14 | THis is the Very First Victor Recording ever sold commercially (A7) or simply 'Monarch Record #7'. It is called by two names: 'Limberger Cheese' or 'A Boy and his Cheese' as shown on this copy. It's a monologue of Burt Shepard (Although some sources erroneously report it is George Broderick) telling about a prank he pulled on his parents that got out of hand. Recorded on November 23, 1900, there are only 6 confirmed recordings that were ever made by Victor beforehand, but none of these were sold and none are known to have survived.Here is the actual dialogue, for those who have trouble understanding the speaker. It's not so much that the recording is poor as the fact that the diction and vocabulary is very archaic, and most people don't recognize the words. The first few seconds are very scratchy and hard to interpret. (?One day when I went down to the grocer last saturday?) the grocer behind the counter gave me a (?object?) wrapped in a sliver of silver paper which he told me was a piece of limberger cheese.When I got outside the shot I opened the paper, and when I smelt what was inside I nearly expired!I took it home and put it in the corn bin.In the morning I went to see if it was still there...Nobody had taken it!I thought about what I could do.Father and Mother were getting ready to go to church.I put a piece in the back pocket of father's trousers, and another piece in the lining of ma's (archaic piece of clothing).I walked behind them as we were headed to church, and it was beginning to get very warm...When we got into the church, father looked anxious, and mother looked as though something had happened.After the first hymn, mother told father not to sing, but to keep his mouth shut and breath through his nose. After the Prayer, the first deacon threw 'out common stink?' and the people in the pew of ours got up and went out.After the next hymn, 'Mrs Bricks who was a mother?' started to spin a bout and air herself out.After the second lesson some of the church wardens came down to see if there were any dead rats in the building (HA).Some more people in our pew got up and went out, putting their hankerchiefs to their noses as they went.The pastor ended but a quarter of the prayer when moving the meeting outside where there were much more sanitary conditions than the church (HAHA!)As for mother and father, mother told father they better go home and (???)Father told mother to go immediately home and change before he gagged.When they got home, they both went into the front room and the stink then came down.Mother told father to put the cat out of the room. It was sung by Vernon Dalhart under the Pseudonym 'Edwin Dale', and was #13 for the year in 1922, peaking at #2 on the US billboard charts in September of that year. The recording on the reverse of the record 'Song of Persia' hit #35 for the same year. Vernon Dalhart is best remembered for 'The Prisoner's Song' possibly the biggest selling hit for country music of all time by chart ranking, which was #3 for the year in 1925 and #1 in 1926, and was sung under his own name. A Movie under the name 'Maytime' was released the year after this song and a remake of it was made in 1937, but I don't know if it is related to this song in anything except name. 110 year old Japanese singing MusicProjectX 2011-06-12 | This is a roughly 110 year old recording of Japanese Music, recorded somewhere between 1900 and 1902 (probably earlier than later). It is a performance of Modoribashi, A Japanese kabuki performance. The woman performing is named Kin'nosuke. I don't really know anything about this performance, so here is some information from a website about Japanese performances. The attitude of the two is exactly opposite to the conventional love scenes on the Western stage, where the maiden refuses and is hard-hearted, while the lover tries to gain her favour. The demon uses all her arts, but the warrior cannot easily be won over. Watanabe's flirtation with the devil woman in disguise continues until he leads her upon the bridge, and then looking down into the water he catches the reflection of her face and knows that she is not a human maid, but that she is his enemy and would lure him to destruction. The gradual change from a charming woman into a terrible devil is effected by changes in face, voice, and posture, a transformation that gives an actor with the weird for specialty a good opportunity. While the hero and the uncanny creature attack each other in a posture dance, the bridge disappears, drawn off by invisible hands behind the scenes, and a red-lacquered shrine is pushed partly into view and completes the very striking stage picture. The dance between the two becomes wilder and more intense, reaching a climax as the maiden darts behind the scene. Almost immediately she returns in her true shape, wearing a grotesque mask, while her mane is light brown, with a white stripe down the middle and so long it trails over the stage. She dances wildly about in a fight with warriors, whose swords glint in the semi-darkness of the stage; storm clouds hurry across the sky as though scurrying before a cyclone. A curtain of gauze representing clouds shuts off the view. The warrior and the creature he pursues are in mid-air struggling together right over the roof of a temple.
