Old Fuel Oil Furnace convert to wood or pellets MrFlyTWA 2019-01-08 | Remove this old fuel oil furnace years ago and just taking up room in my shed. I started to pull it out to take to scrap yard but found a reuse for it. Once I taken the square shroud off and oil lines it burns wood great! I'm not furnace guy by no means. But investigating the burn pot it looks just like those gasfier burners people make out of soup cans for DYI camping cook stoves. So the trick is how to clean out? Thinking of supporting heat exchanger off floor and making the bottom burn pot to connect with twist lock tabs. I was planning on incorporating into a larger ice shanty but I'll have to see. I got 30 minute burn on pine wood chunks. Once pot was hot it burned even faster so I restricted the bottom air intake holes and this slowed the burn rate down. Yet did not effect gasfier effect on burn. Also tried hardwood pellets and boy did she like those! Air flow will be the answer to both fuel and heat control just like any other wood stove. Anyone want to chime in on ideas or warning please do so. Thanks for watching!
