Madhumati :-
1938 born in as Hutoxi Reporter in a Parsi Family.
In her heydays she was called 'Poor Man's Helen' but she definitely had her own identity.
Sister of cricket umpire Piloo Reporter
Married dancer widowed Deepak Manohar
Madhumati was born in 1938 in a remote village near Maharashtra. She made her debut as a dancer in 1957 in an unreleased Marathi movie. Madhumati got married at the early age of 19 to Manohar Deepak. She busied herself throughout the 1960s by dancing in Punjabi, Marathi, Hindi, Bhojpuri and South Indian movies. She was often compared to the great dancer Helen in terms of her dancing abilities and looks. She made her exit in 1977 and made a comeback in 2001. After the passing of her husband in 2002, she now occupies herself by running the Madhumati dance academy in Mumbai.
Way back in the late 1950s, a Parsi girl entered the film world as a dancer. Her name was Madhumati. Apparently, in her career of around 25 years, she claimed to have worked in over 1000 films which include Hindi films and also regional ones in Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi, Bhojpuri & South Indian language. She did more than 30 Punjabi films in which she had dance numbers and also played lead and supporting roles in some. In her heydays she was called 'Poor Man's Helen' but she definitely had her own identity.
As Said Madhumati.....
I was always interested in dance but was discouraged from learning this art because my father was a judge and mother a housewife. I soon started doing dance performances on stage, which is when I got film offers. I was happy with my stage dance performances and was not interested in a film career. I was still in school and my father did was also against my working in films. Later on, I accepted one film offer for the sake of experience. It was a Marathi film and offers kept coming. My father had no more issues about my working in films though he had put a condition that I will only do dance in films and must not accept acting offers. I left my studies after matric but got appointed as a dance teacher in a Govt school, even though I was hardly fifteen.
Besides acting, I was also teaching dance at school and later formed a dance group with female dancers only. Manohar Deepak ji became very famous after doing Bhangra numbers in Jagte Raho & Naya Daur. He had his own Bhangra Group and wanted me to collaborate for some stage performances. Initially, I refused as I had my own dance group but later on we were together on some stage tours so I started performing for his group. I was supposed to do only dance in films as per my promise to my father but Deepak ji persuaded me to take up acting assignments too. By then I was typecast in dancing roles only.
Trivia....

Khandaan, family, is a 1942 Bollywood film directed by Shaukat Hussain Rizvi and produced by D.M. Pancholi, starring Pran,Noor Jehan,Ghulam Mohammed Manorama and M. Ajmal.
It was written by author Imtiaz Ali Taj and made in Pancholi's Lahore studio. For the first time in British India, there was a lot of "ahead of film release" publicity for this film. As a result, this became a much-awaited film for the Indian public and became a hit film when released.

This was mainly a Noor Jehan musical about a man seduced by a gold-digging woman, who then kills her and her lover is jailed. When he is released, he finds employment as a gardener and becomes a father-figure to his employer's son Anwar and to Anwar's fiancée Zeenat (Noor Jehan). This allows him to prevent Anwar from perpetuating precisely the same crime for which he had been jailed as history repeats itself because, so the film alleges, men are constantly threatened by women and only paternal wisdom can save them from the untoward desires of women. Future famous film directors Ramesh Saigal and S. K. Ojha assisted in this film. source: Ashish Rajadhyaksha & Paul Willemen Encyclopaedia of Indian Cinema , New Revised Edition 1999.

Lyricist/Poet ...Farooq Qaiser
Faruk Kaiser (6 June 1918 - 10 Nov. 1987) was an Urdu poet and a lyricist .He was one of the dominating forces of music in Indian Cinema during the 1950s through the 1980s. He contributed to more than 115 movies and 390 songs.
Faruk Kaiser was born in 1918 into a jeweller’s family. He was to be the second eldest of 12 children and was educated in Bombay (present day Mumbai). Faruk had an enquiring mind and, even as a child, exhibited a keen interest in reading- books and newspapers - and later in the wireless. Faruk’s mother died when he was 18; shortly after that he left his family home and found lodgings in a friend’s tailoring premises. Here, he devoted his time to further learning: immersing himself in poetry, literature, educational books, newspapers, magazines, and almost anything available in print - whilst also learning languages besides his native Urdu.
His Move Into Bollywood the side profile of Faruk Kaiser later in life..
Faruk's love for poetry and his friendship with neighbour Kamran Khan (father of Farah Khan and Sajid Khan) were instrumental in his developing an enthusiasm for the creative works of Hindi Cinema. While Kamran Khan produced and acted in films, Faruk was introduced into the Bollywood scene as an assistant director, whose expertise was frequently sought to modify dialogues and revamp scenes. He went on to direct several movies until he found his niche as a lyricist.
Personal life :-
Among his many colleagues in the film industry, Faruk was a great friend of actor Kamal Mohan, who was the father of six sons and one daughter. Kamal Mohan proposed his daughter Aisha's hand in marriage to his dear friend and confidant Faruk- who took an immediate liking for her. During their courtship, he penned the lyrics of Sari Sari Raat Teri Yaad Sataye for the movie Aji Bas Shukriya (1958) while she was stricken with tuberculosis and hospitalised in Bombay for a year. Soon after Aisha's discharge from hospital in 1959, they married and moved to Bandra. Faruk's career had developed and his work took him all over India; during his many travels he wrote diligently to his wife and soulmate. It was during his travels, on a shoot in 1963, that he wrote the song Oee Ma Oee Ma Yeh Kya Ho Gaya for the movie Parasmani (1963)
Faruk and Aisha had three children- one son, Shakil (1960) and two daughters - Bilkis Whelan (1962 -2003) and Tabassum (1963-1983).

Popular film songs..
The film Do Bhai features the songs, "Mera Sundar Sapna Beet Gaya"and "Yaad Karoge", sung by Geeta Dutt, with music composed by Sachin Dev Burman, and lyrics by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan....
Geeta Dutt (née Roy), born in 1930, had no formal training in music. Music director Hanuman Prasad heard her voice and made her sing two lines in a chorus in his film Bhakt Prahlad (1946). Considering a film took one to one and a half years those days, young Geeta would have been about 15 years old when she sang two lines in the Chorus.
S.D. Burman heard those two lines, and though her voice was part of that chorus, he realized her potential. He went to her place in Dadar to persuade her father to let her sing in his forthcoming film Do Bhai (1947). The film was being produced by Filmistan, the biggest production house those days. Geeta would have been all of 16 then.
Burman-da decided to make her sing most of his songs. Naturally, the producers objected to a young and untrained girl singing most of the songs in their film. But Burman Dada would not listen. Finally, a compromise was arrived at. Dada put his reputation at stake by declaring that he would record one song with Geeta, after listening to which the producers may arrive at their decision. Dada was so confident of his ability to make her sing. The first song to be recorded by Geeta was ‘Humein chod piya kis des gaye’. Everyone liked it and Dada was allowed a free hand to decide. Do Bhai had nine songs, out of which Dada made Geeta sing six songs. Geeta sang her life's first super-hit song ‘Mera sunder sapna beet gaya’ under Burman. Viewers used to see the film again, and again, for its music. The film became super-hit, and completed silver jubilee.
It was also first film for lyricist Raja Mehdi Ali Khan. Both Geeta Dutt and Raja Mehdi Ali Khan got name and fame after the film. Geeta became number one singer till Lata took over in 1949. Even then she held her own in the 1950s

Plot :-
This was mainly a Noor Jehan musical about a man seduced by a gold-digging woman, who then kills her and her lover is jailed.

User Reviews :-
A love story between a poor young man and a wealthy woman with a few good songs..
by dbhattac
Sanam is another Dev Anand and Suraiya movie made late 1940's and early 1950's when Dev Anand was an upcoming star and Suraiya was already an established actress. Meena Kumari plays a very insignificant role, in fact this is one of the movies where she was breaking into general acting role from her mythological characters. Sanam is about a love story where Jogin ( Dev Anand ) a very poor unemployed young man comes across Sadhana ( Suraiya ) in a chance encounter in a book shop. Under desperate conditions Jogin had to rob some money for his mother's treatment and got involved in an accidental homicide for which he was jailed by the court where the Judge ( K.N. Singh ) is the father of Sadhana. The story takes many twists and turn with a few very melodious songs and a dance number and eventually Jogin and Sadhana fall for each other but their proposed marriage is vehemently opposed by the father of the bride. Suraiya provided with a solid performance as the independent minded daughter and did not hesitate to argue with her father about social justice for the poor and under privileged. Gope provided good supporting role with his antics. Overall it was a good movie to watch specially Suraiya's great performance both as an actor and for singing some melodious songs with the direction of Husanlal Bhagatram. The movie was directed by Nandalal Jaswantal who also gave us the block busters like Nagin and Anarkali. I graded the movie as a seven out of ten..

Storyline.....
Raj was very upset when his love Kusum was lost to him. Raj went away to a remote village to seek solace. There Raj abandoned himself to an abandoned abode, a little away from the habitaion. This seat of his solitude was visited by the debonair Shisham, the village chieftains daughter to accord him the castomary hospitality. They kept on meeting; but never did they get conscious of mutual love. Laado, of all the other belles, fall for Raj & confessed it to him but he spurned it. Hate took possession of her. Chano, close friend of Shisham, kept close watch on Laado & failed almost all her plans to destroy happiness of lovers. But Laado told about it to Shisham's mother and Shisham was ordered not to stir out of her house. Laado, having settled Shisham thus, made the last desperate effort to win over Raj; but him she found much too adamant to submit to her love or hate. Notwithstanding his audacity she had him assaulted by her brother, Gola, and his associates. Serously injured Raj was rushed to the neighbouring city hospital. There, he was restored to his mother. But Raj wanted to meet Shisham and he scaled the hospital walls. But hardly had he felt the road when he was knocked down by a speeding past car. Shisham was waiting for him. She was yearning to hear a word from him; instead she heard drums beating the death-knell of her love..

Shriman Satyawadi is a 1960 a
Hindi film, directed by S. M.Abbas. Raj Kapoor, in the lead role is seen in this social drama as an honest man, who will experience only too well how difficult it is to compete in a dishonest world.
Storyline.....,
Young Vijaykumar lives with his sick and widowed father Mohanlal under poor conditions. As an honest shopkeeper, he deserves the wherewithal to provide for himself and his son. This doesn't suit the neighbour and competitor Lalachand at all. One day, he hides cocaine in Mohanlal's shop and alerts the police. After the police find it, they want to discipline Mohanlal, who is always honest. But the sick man could not cope with this and dies of a heart attack.
Sad about this death, Vijay never forgot the words of his father and grew up to be an honest doctor. After graduating from college, he finds a job in the advertising department of the rich Champalal and his daughter, Geeta, who is responsible for this Department. Also, he meets Kishore, Lalachand's son, who could not stand Vijay during school.
While Vijay and Kishore fight for Geeta's heart, Lalachand wants to increase his fortune. He makes the ignorant Champalal his investor and manufactures untested skin creams and fake painkillers.
Wanting to impress Geeta with fast success, Kishore releases the cream in market, without waiting for the test reports. However, already the first customers come with their complaints, while the editor of a local newspaper, Moni Chatterjee, is present and interviews Vijay. This confirms that the cream was already introduced on the market before waiting for the test report.
The article in the newspaper represents bad publicity for Champalal's company and Vijay is accused of telling the truth. Since this would otherwise breach his principles, Vijay quits his job, much to the annoyance of Geeta, who is already in love with the honest man.
Soon, Vijay finds a job with Moni Chatterjee, who was impressed by his honesty. Due to his sincere reports, Vijay is very popular, so a helpless blind man turns to him one day. He maintains that his child had died as a result of the painkiller. Vijay is on the trail. His path ultimately leads to Lalachand, who threatens him with death, if ever an article about the toxic pain killers should appear. But Vijay felt afraid of the truth and gets into some turbulence. Finally, the truth prevails and Lalachand is discharged while Champalal apologizes to Vijay. Also Geeta, practitioner of love finds a happy ending.

Star Singer
Paro Devi
According to Saadat Hasan Manto, Paro was a courtesan from Meerut where she was a big hit with all the rich men of the city. Among those who frequented her kotha were the poets Josh Maleehabadi and Saghar Nizami!
She was introduced by Savak Vachcha in Shikari (1946) as a side-heroine. She sang her own songs in this film including Chupo chupo o marne se darnewalon and Rangeela re, jawani mein sata ke kahan kahan gaya re composed by S.D. Burman. Later, she played supporting roles in many films including Do Bhai (1947), Sargam (1950), Angarey (1954) etc. Her most memorable role was opposite Dilip Kumar and Kamini Kaushal in Shabnam (1949). The film was a box-office success mainly because of its dances and music. Three of the Mukesh-Shamshad duets were picturized on her and Dilip Kumar – Tumhare liye huwe badnaam, Tu mehloun mein rehnai walie and Pyar mein tumne dhoka seekha.
Despite having a good voice, music directors rarely used her voice for playback singing. Many of her songs onscreen were sung by Shamshad Begum. However, she did sing quite a few songs in films and one of the most famous one was Deewana gaya daaman sai lipat from Karwat (1949), music by Hansraj Behl.
Paro also produced Nakhare (1951) under the banner of Paro pictures.
She had a very fresh and young voice.. please listen songs , paro on her best. Film Heera 1947

Yeh Rastey Hain Pyaar Ke (lit. 'These are the paths of love') is a 1963 Hindi film starring Sunil Dutt and Leela Naidu in the lead roles. This film was Sunil Dutt's debut production, directed by R.K. Nayyar, with music composed by Ravi.
A man goes abroad leaving behind his wife and children. In his absence his playboy friend seduces his wife. On his return he finds out about them. He confronts his friend who accidentally gets killed.
Anil Sahni (Sunil Dutt) is a pilot who married Neena (Leela Naidu) against his father's wishes. When Anil was away on a trip, Neena and Ashok (Rehman) come close and have an affair. Anil returns and is furious to find out about the affair. He confronts Ashok, who is killed in an ensuing scuffle. Anil is tried for murder in court, with defence and prosecution lawyers fighting it out.
Rustom and Ye Rastey Hain Pyar Ke: A case for the cheating wife
In the 1963 film based on the Nanavati trial, she dies of guilt. In the new one, she is pardoned by her noble husband.
Rustom, directed by Tinu Suresh Desai, and starring Akshay Kumar in the title role, is based on the sensational murder case that rocked the country in 1959.
Making the film now, meant researching and recreating period details, a problem that RK Nayyar’s Ye Rastey Hai Pyar Ke didn’t have, since it was made soon after the cause célèbre, in 1963.
Ye Rastey Hai Pyar Ke (1963) Naval commander Kawas M Nanavati shot dead his English wife Sylvia's lover Prem Ahuja. Such was the sympathy for the Parsi man in uniform that the public supported him, with opinion whipped up in his favour by fellow Parsi Russi Karanjia, editor of the popular tabloid Blitz.
In the film he is named Eruch Billmoria and seen to approach a patrician industrialist, JJ (easy to guess who) for funds to run the pro-Nanavati campaign.
Opinion was whipped up in Nanavati's favour by Russi Karanjia, editor of the popular tabloid Blitz.
Nanavati was found not guilty by a jury in the Greater Bombay sessions court, but the judge referred the case to the Bombay High Court, which found Nanavati guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment. But he was granted a pardon and left the country to settle in Canada. This was the last case to be tried by a jury in India, after which this system was abolished by the government.
Nayyar altered the story to suit the tastes of the Indian audience, who in that period, would not have been able to stomach the plot about an unfaithful wife.
In the film, starring Sunil Dutt (who also produced it), Leela Naidu, Rehman and Shashikala, the wife, Neena is lonely after her husband Anil, a pilot, goes out of the country on work and befriends his pal Ashok, not knowing that he is a playboy. His jilted girlfriend (Shashikala) cautions Ashok against trying to seduce a decent married woman, but one day at a party, he gets her drunk and rapes her.
She is so shocked and ashamed that she spends most of the film after the incident dressed in a white sari looking mournful. Anil ends up shooting Ashok, and the case goes into a high-profile trial with defence lawyer Byomkesh Mukherjee (Ashok Kumar) and prosecutor Ali Khan (Motilal) matching wits in court. There is a very filmi twist towards the end, and then a melodramatic climax, in which it turns out that Anil is genuinely not guilty.

Review:-
Film.. Dhuaan,1953
Produced and directed by Roshanlal Malhotra, Roopnagar’s murder mystery, “Dhuaan” is an amateurish film, the story of which is too frequently held up by songs which merely irritate.
The cast is headed by Usha Kiron as the murdered girl, M. Rajan who portrays the hero and chief suspect, and Asha Mathur as the girl who befriends him and helps him track down the real murderer.
While the identity of the murderer is well concealed, the film on the whole drags owing to the highly amateurish direction and the stilted portrayals by M. Rajan & Asha Mathur who make an unprepossessing stellar pair.
Usha Kiron puts over the one really good performance in the picture as the beautiful young dancer with a tragic end. Forceful, determined and highly attractive, her comparatively small role dominates the picture.
The supporting players do well in their parts, especially Jeevan.
Vasant Desai’s music score is disappointing and surprisingly (for him) westernized. Of the three dances composed by Vinod Chopra, only one – the ‘Moon and Waves’ ballet – is good in composition and gracefully performed.
The photography, costumes, sets and decor are good
Dhaniram.. Remembering a forgotten music mastario..
Date of Birth – 1922
Date of Death – March 14th, 1967.
After learning the basics from Buteh Khan, Dhaniram had made his brother Omkarnath his guru. During those days Dhaniram used to sing for Aakashvaani Delhi. This was around 1935. After that in 1942 he started working as Music Director for ‘Song Publicity Organization’. He became the Music Director for ‘HMV’ Lahore in 1945. It was there that he started his career by giving music in ‘Papiha Re’.
During the time of partition , Dhaniram left the films ‘Kaalidas’ and ‘Mera Desh’ incomplete and went to Delhi. He started working there as a Music Director.
As said Dhaniram...
‘In the year 1955 (?) I went to Bombay’ as told by Dhaniram. Here he started getting one after another Films. ‘ B. R. Chopra’s ‘Sholey’, A.V.M’s ‘Ladki’, ‘Dhuan’, ‘Daak Babu’, ‘Shaahi Bazaar’, ‘Shaahi Chor’, ‘Baaje Ghungroo’ and dubbed Films like ‘Matwaala’, ‘Mahavath’, ‘Taqdeer’, ‘Aankh Ka Nashaa’ & ‘Ladki’ were some Films through which I could showcase my talent. However only the audience can say if I have been successful in my attempts or not.’
‘Surely the audiences would give witness to your success. Just tell me now something about the audiences.’ My words were ‘Do you know what the Audience likes ?’
‘We cannot measure the likes of the Audiences. Just understand that whatever fascinates the mind becomes their favourite.’
Around 42 years ago Dhaniram was born in Secunderabad. It was a huge surprise that he developed an interest in music. He was so much lost in his passion for music that he didn’t realize how he overcame the difficulties. In 1932 when he came with his Father to Shimla he remained there only. He learnt music till 1935 from Buteh Khan. Then when he took an oath by singing and composing, then he had dedicated his life to music. He has given such gems like O. P. Nayyar. Dhaniram was Nayyar’s Guru for many years. Vinod who had given music in a Punjabi Film ‘Chaman’ was also his disciple. Sabita Banerjee lent her voice for the first time under Dhaniram’s composition. It was in the Film ‘Aankh Ka Nashaa’.
Let’s hear in his own words what all he has to do to make tunes for a song. ‘First, think about the situation and then get lost in the deepness of the words in the song. I do attempt to be in synchronization with what the Lyricist has penned. When the mind gives the nod I wrap the tunes around the words.’
‘This means that you don’t give your tunes to write a song?’

Sadhna ans Shammi Kapoor a beautiful pair..
.
According to Upperstall, an online reference website, “If Sadhana was the definitive enduring female icon of the swinging 1960s, then without a doubt her male counterpart was Shammi Kapoor. Certainly no other Hindi film hero made the art of boy chasing girl a more enjoyable and playful affair than Shammi Kapoor.” Like Sadhana, in the five years preceding the release of Budtameez, Shammi Kapoor too had on average at least one annual hit film which was on the list of the ten highest-grossing films for the year. In particular, he played the male lead in the hit films Junglee (1961), Dil Tera Deewana (1962), Professor (1962), China Town (1962), Kashmir Ki Kali (1964), Rajkumar (1964) and Jaanwar (1965).
Finally, two years before acting in Budtameez, Shammi Kapoor and Sadhana acted as a pair for the first time in the hit film Rajkumar (1964), which was the fifth highest-grossing film of 1964, attesting to their audience appeal as a pair.

In-depth training and a rich repertoire are two of the many essential prerequisites that are demanded of a serious practitioner of Hindustani music. Tabla maestro Nikhil Ghosh had the distinction of being a recipient of both, thus making him a repository of traditional tabla solo compositions from the Delhi, Ajrada, Lucknow, Farrukhabad and Punjab gharanas. This inheritance was largely because of his tutelage under three gurus, namely, Gyan Prakash Ghosh, Amir Hussein Khan and Ahmed Jan Thirakwa. Among the three, Gyan Prakash Ghosh had studied under Maseet Khan and Feroze Khan, Amir Hussein Khan had learnt from his maternal uncle Munir Khan, and Ahmed Jan Thirakwa had been a disciple of Munir Khan, though he had also learnt from his uncles. To go further into the past, Munir Khan was said to have learnt from twenty-four gurus following the major styles of tabla playing. This legacy was handed down to Nikhil Ghosh by his gurus over several years of training.
Nikhil Ghosh did not come from a family of musicians, but his father and grandfather had studied music. It was however his elder brother Pannalal Ghosh, who first took up music as a professional pursuit. Known for his contribution to bringing the bansuri (bamboo flute) to centrestage in Hindustani music, Pannalal Ghosh was accompanied in several concerts and recordings by Nikhil Ghosh. Having had an exposure to raag music since as early age, Nikhil Ghosh also learnt vocal music. This passion for the melodic aspect of Hindustani music remained with him forever more, leading him to befriend vocalists and instrumentalists and to acquire traditional vocal compositions from leading senior vocalists.
However, it was the tabla that he focused on and went on to accompany a host of vocalists and instrumentalists. His solos were marked by an emphasis on traditional compositions and an adherence to the spirit and structural framework of the taal. For him, mathematics played a secondary role, as he laid greater stress on the language of the instrument presented through various compositions. He freely employed dynamics in his solos and accompaniment, often lending a dramatic element to the performance. He was equally open to experimenting with presentation, as is evident from his handling of the repertoire or even the manner of producing melody from the bayan (bass drum).
Nikhil Ghosh also had a brief stint as Assistant Music Director for Hindi feature films and had composed songs for non-film commercial recordings.
His tabla solo was released by His Master’s Voice and his accompaniment to vocal and instrumental music was also featured on some commercial recordings. He was also a regular broadcaster on All India Radio. Parallel to his professional commitment, Nikhil Ghosh was also an educationist. In fact, he focused more on this aspect in the later years of his life. He established a school for music and dance called Sangit Mahabharati, where music was notated as per a system devised by him. This system addressed in partic

jab zindagi ki rate aati hai zindagi me
jab apne dil se bate hoti hai chandani me
hoti hai chandani me
us chandani ki kimat, us chandani ki kimat
koi mere dil se puche, koi mere dil se puche
kya chiz hai mohabbat
jab dil ki dhadkano se hote hai rag paida
dil dil se milke jis dam karta hai aag paida
karta hai aag paida
un do dilo ki kismat, un do dilo ki kismat
koi mere dil se puche, koi mere dil se puche
kya chiz hai mohabbat
kya chiz hai mohabbat mohabbat
koi mere dil se puche mere dil se puche
kya chiz hai mohabbat..

Dil Hi To Hai (1963)
Storyline.....
An impoverished widowed Hindu nanny brings up an abused and abandoned Muslim lad..
In a mansion, filled with guests and decorated for a wedding, two men struggle over the possession of a revolver. A shot rings out and to the horror of the assembled throng, a lady falls, dying. She is the mother of one of the protagonists and her deathbed confession is the key that unravels the complicated events that led up to this tragic climax - a tale that involves switched identities, multiple disguises, an arranged marriage, attempted murder, heartless cruelty, rapacious greed and (for good measure) a dancing girl whose mother (were she around) would have good reason to suspect her condition.

After three of her four children pass away, wealthy Nawab Jallaudin and his wife decide to leave the 4th, Yusuf, with their relatives, Sabra and Farida, who also have their very own son, Sheku. After 3 years, they want Yusuf to be brought back, but wily Farida decides to abandon Yusuf at the railway station and pass off Sheku as him. She does pull wool successfully over the Nawab and Sheku is accepted, while Yusuf ends up with an impoverished Hindu Aaya, who ironically, loses her job with the Nawab himself, after deciding to adopt Yusuf. Years later, Yusuf has grown up, sings on All India Radio as 'Chand', meets and falls in love with wealthy widower Khan Bahadur's daughter, Jamila Banu - unknowingly setting forth a chain of events - some hilarious, some tragic, but mostly that result in his humiliation.

sath hain manjhi toh kinara bhi karib hai
duniya me aisa kaha sabka nasib hai
chahe bujha de koyi dipak sare
prit bichhati jaye raah me tare
chahe bujha de koyi dipak sare
prit bichhati jaye raah me tare
prit diwani ki kahani bhi ajib hai

Matchmaker Ram comes up with marriage proposals for both the cousins. Following family traditions, it is decided that the boys will meet the respective brides by proxy. Suresh falls in love with Madhumati (Bhawariya). He cooks up a wicked plot. He writes two letters to each of the families due to which an innocent and somewhat less educated Shankar is badly treated by his parents. Bbhawariya's brother asks Suresh to accept his guilt before Ashok's parents presuming that it is Suresh sitting on chair, but it happens to be Ashok who listens this and comes to know of everything. In a rift between Shankar and Suresh, Suresh dies accidentally, for which Shankar is held the culprit. Madumati who is determined to see her husband's murderer hanged, changes her words and saves Shankar.

Tum kitni sundar ho
Mann mein pyaar bhara,

Tum to mere priyavar ho
Tumhi to mere priyavar ho
Singaar tera yovan, yovan hi tera gehna
Singaar tera yovan, yovan hi tera gehna
Tu taazgi phoolon ki, kya saadgi ka kehna
Ude khushboo jab chale tu
Ude khushboo jab chale tu
Bole to baje sitaar
Na kajre ki dhaar, na motiyon ke haar
Na koi kiya singaar phir bhi kitni sundar ho
Tum kitni sundar ho
Saari duniya harjaayi,
Tere pyaar mein hai sachchaai
Saari duniya harjaayi,
Tere pyaar mein hai sachchaai
Is liye chhodke duniya
Teri aur kheenchi chali aayi
Thi patthar tune chhookar
Thi patthar tune chhookar
Sona kar diya khara

Aur tan mein pyaar bhara
Jeevan mein pyaar bhara
Tum to mere priyavar ho
Tumhi to mere priyavar ho

Sarakti Jaye Hain Rukh Se Naqab Song Lyrics Translation
Here is the translation of Sarakti Jaye Hain Rukh Se Naqab song from movie Jagjit Singh (Gazal).
sarakatii jaaye hai ruKh se naqaab ahista ahista
Sliding away from the face is the cover, very slowly
nikalataa aa rahaa hai aaftaab ahista ahista
Coming into vision is the moon, very slowly
jawaaN hone lage jab vo to ham se kar liyaa pardaa
When she entered youthfullness, then she hid behind veil
hayaa yakalaKht aayii aur shabaab ahista ahista
Suddenly appeared modesty/shame and youthfullness, very slowly
shabefurkat kaa jaagaa huuN farishton ab to sone do
Since the night of separation I am awake, angels[of death] let me sleep now
kabhii fursat men kar lenaa hisaab ahista ahista
Take account of everything later, when you have time, but slowly
savaalevasl par unako uduu kaa Khauf hai itanaa
She has so much passion for questions and answer session but she's afraid so much from the villain
Dabe honThon se dete hain javaab aahistaa aahistaa
She replies with clenched lips, very slowly
hamaare aur tumhaare pyar men bas fark hai itanaa
There is just this much difference in my and your love
idhar to jaldii jaldii hai udhar aahistaa aahistaa
This side is a rush but from your side is slow
vo bedardii se sar kaaTe "ameer" aur main kahuuN un se
She is beheading me, [Ameer] without passion and I am telling her
huzuur aahistaa aahistaa, janaab ahista ahista
Your highness! slowly, Your Honor! do it slowly

Gumnaam (Unknown or Anonymous) is a 1965 Indian suspense thriller film directed by Raja Nawathe, starring Manoj Kumar, Nanda, Pran, Helen and Mehmood. The film became a box office hit. The music for the film was composed by Shankar-Jaikishan.
The story is an uncredited adaptation of Agatha Christie' s novel And Then There Were None.
The film came to wider attention in the Western World when its opening song "Jaan Pehechan Ho" (a Hindi phrase roughly translated as "We should get to know each other") was in the opening credits of Ghost World and in the 2011 commercial "The Date" for Heineken. It is sung by Bollywood legend Mohammed Rafi, although he is not the man depicted onscreen. The main dancer is Laxmi Chhaya. The group "Ted Lyons and his Cubs" playing the song can also be seen in 1964 film Jaanwar playing "Dekho Ab To" (a cover version of I Want to Hold Your Hand by the Beatles) and Tasveer (starring Feroz Khan), Love Marriage (starring Dev Anand), Bedaag (starring Manoj Kumar), Shehnai and Mere Sanam (both starring Vishwajeet)
Plot:-
Seven people mysteriously win a free vacation. On the way to their destination, the plane has engine trouble and they are left abandoned in a remote seaside location along with the steward Anand (Manoj Kumar). The location is haunted by a female singing a song whom none seem to find.
They find shelter in a large mansion inhabited by a comical butler Mehmood. One by one, they are murdered and the remaining vacationers try to figure out why they were chosen for the trip and what they have in common.
Sharda(Sharda Rajan Aiyangar):-
Early in her career Sharda was offered a voice test by Raj Kapoor when he first heard her singing in a function at Shrichand Ahuja's residence in Tehran. She got her first big break in Bollywood with the song "Titli Udi" in Suraj (1966). She was promoted by Shankar of the Shankar Jaikishan duo.
"Titli udi" turned out to be a top chartbuster in 1966. It so happens that the coveted Filmfare award for best playback singer had only one category (either male or female) until 1966. "Titli Udi" song, however, was tied as best song with Mohd Rafi's song "Baharo Phool Barsao" which had never happened before. Sharda didn't win the award but from then on Filmfare started giving two awards for best playback singer: one for male singer and the other for female singer. Thus Sharda made history. Thereafter Sharda was nominated four years in a row (1968–71) for best female playback singer and won another Filmfare award. In a short span Sharda won two Filmfare awards, when the Mangeshkar Sisters were dominating. Thereafter she continued singing for Shankar in nearly all of his films until his death. Her voice was last heard in Kaanch Ki Deewar (1986).
She sang with most of the top singers like Mohd Rafi, Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar, Yesudas, Mukesh and Suman Kalyanpur. She lent her voice to leading ladies of the time like Vyjayanthimala, Saira Banu, Hema Malini, SharmilaTagore, Mumtaz, Rekha &Helen. Besides Shankar she recorded songs with Usha Khanna,Ravi,Dattaram,Iqbal Qureshi and a few others. She was the first Indian female singer to cut her own pop album in India, called Sizzlers in 1971 which was launched by HMV.
She performed on stage on several occasions like Filmfare Awards functions, charity shows, naval functions, and many others.
Sharda was never able to reach the top bracket of singers but she did manage to create a certain section of the music listeners as her fans and well wishers. She conducts music lessons for children and aspiring singers. Besides Hindi she also sang in Telugu, Marathi, English, and Gujrathi.

duniya mein hoon duniya ka talabgaar nahin hoon
bazaar se guzra hoon kharidaar nahin hoon
(For now) I belong in this world, and yet I have no desire to partake anything from it. I am a wanderer, passing through the marketplace (of life), but I will not buy / acquire anything from here.
Duniya = this world / this life
Talab = desire, want; talabgaar = one who has desires
Bazaar = market place; another allusion to life itself. In a marketplace, we transact to buy/sell/acquire things and people and (imagined) pleasures; and we do the same in life with people, possessions and events.
Guzarna = passing through; guzra = have passed through
Kharidaar = buyer, one who transacts to obtain, and to possess
zinda hoon magar zeest ki lazzat nahin baaqi
har chand ke hoon hosh mein hoshiyaar nahin hoon
I am alive but the delights and pleasures of life are meaningless for me. Each instance of my existence I am aware of what I am and where I am, but my senses are not attending to this world. The context of this second line is not having a desire to manipulate through cleverness. (see below)
Zinda = alive
Magar = but, however
Zeest = life
Lazzat = this word comes from another word, lazeez, which means excellent to taste. Lazzat is the delight / pleasure of tasting.
Nahin baaqi = remains no more
Har chand = every instant (literal meaning of these two words is – har = each / every, chand = few; yet the phrase ‘har chand’ is used as indicated)
Hoon = to be; I am
Hosh = a state of being aware, conscious, sentient, informed
Hoshiyaar = hoshiyaar literally is to be in hosh, as described above. The poet however is using this word in a slightly different context. Hoshiyaar also means clever, shrewd, astute, possessing the ability to manipulate, maneuver, influence. ‘Hoshiyaar nahin hoon’ means to not exercise influence or not to manipulate. Again pointing to the absence of desires to influence or to manipulate.
is khaanah e hasti se guzar jaaungaa be-laus
saayaa hoon fakat naqsh ba-deewaar nahin hoon
The soul will pass through (life) this mortal body without gain. I am(the body) just a shadow, which leaves no impression(No. impact on the scheme of things, so as to say).
Khaanah = compartment, dwelling, house
Hasti = existing, to be
Khaanah e hasti = a dwelling of existence, this body
Guzarna = passing through; guzar = to pass through
Be-laus = (am not able to put down a literal meaning; request help from friends with knowledge of Urdu)
Saayaa = shadow, apparition
Fakat = just, only
Naqsh = engraving, imprint
Ba-deewaar = on the wall (or in stone
Gul = flower
Khizaa = autumn, decay
Barbaad = destroyed, disseminated
Uljhoon = get entangled
Daaman = the flow part of a skirt or other garment
Khaar = thorn

Plot:-
A mother and daughter create bitterness, hatred, acrimony and discord in a wealthy family
A block buster of a gemini production with some stellar performance by veteran bollywood actors.
This is a blockbuster. This movie has everything from stellar acting, enchanting music with a very entertaining qawali type song with dance, family feud and some gorgeous acting by Rajendra Kumar, Raaj Kumar, Shubha Khote, Agha and Lalita Power. Lalita Power is amazing – from a banana vendor in Shri 420, a Christian house keeper in Sharada to this cantankerous mother of the house in Gharana , she demonstrated her acting skills to its pinnacle. She was just awesome in her role as the mother of the house and beating up on everyone without any reason or so ever. Asha Parekh as the younger bohu of the house did very well though she did not have a very serious role in the movie. Vijaylakhsmi as the elder bohu was very reserved and did a wonderful job portraying the ideal housewife and taking all the abuse from her mother-in-law, sister-in-law and even her husband but never loosing the faith that every Indian women have in her khandan. The dance sequences were well presented and cinematography was better than average. I gave it a nine out of ten....dbhattac25 March 2013

The plot of this movie re-introduced the lost and reunite formula in Bollywood, originally featured in the 1943 Ashok Kumar, Mumtaz Shanti starrer Kismet (fate).
A happy family separated by Waqt (time) goes through a series of trials trying to reunite. The film was later remade into the Telugu as Bhale Abbayilu (1969) and in Malayalam as Kolilakkam (1981).
It is still considered one of the blockbuster movies of actress Sadhana. The film contains the popular Hindi songs "Hum Jab Simat Ke", sung by Mahendra Kapoor and Asha Bhosle, Waqt se din aur raat, sung by the legendary Mohammed Rafi, Aage Bhi Jaane Na Tu, sung by Asha Bhosle and Ae Meri Zohra Jabeen, sung by Manna Dey, composed by Ravi and picturised on Balraj Sahni and Achala Sachdev.
Storyline...
The film tells the story of Lala Kedarnath (Balraj Sahni), a successful businessman, and his family. As he is celebrating his success with friends and family, calamity strikes. An earthquake destroys everything that he had worked for and separates Kedarnath, his wife, and two young sons, from one another. The wife (Achala Sachdev) manages to hold on to their youngest son, an infant.
The oldest son finds his way to an orphanage, only to run away and grow up as a thief, Raja (Raaj Kumar). The second son Ravi (Sunil Dutt) is found and adopted by a childless couple. The youngest, Vijay (Shashi Kapoor), grows up with his mother in hardship and poverty.
Despite the cards fate has dealt them, all three grow up to be sincere, good people, even Raja, who is a master thief but with a heart of gold.
The earthquake that tears the family asunder is also seen as symbolic of Partition, a cataclysmic event that shook up India's social fabric two decades earlier and scarred the psyche of the two countries that were born, India and Pakistan. The Chopras, who hailed from undivided Punjab (Baldev Raj was born in Ludhiana while Yash Raj was born in Lahore), had previously explored the far-reaching effects of Partition in their socials..
Waqt was a huge critical and commercial success and swept the Filmfare awards with Yash Chopra winning his first award for Best Director. It also created the archetype of the lives of the wealthy and the glamorous that was seen in the films to follow in the 1970s and 1980s.
The film soundtrack was composed by Ravi with lyrics by Sahir Ludhianvi.

The sensuous beauty of Sadhana and the magical voice of Lata Mangeshkar create one of the most captivating moments on the screen in this classic Bimal Roy film. “O Sajana, Barkha Bahaar Aai…” a personal favourite of Lata, is the highpoint of “Parakh” and captures an unglamorous Sadhana at her best. The other number, “Mila Hai Kisika Jhumka”, is a typical racy song with Lata again demonstrating her classical range.
Bimal Roy’s direction stands out as he makes the best of a Salil Choudhury story. The movie, released in 1960, is set in a village where the plot unfolds at a slow pace. It revolves around the village postmaster, who finds his life change dramatically when he receives a cheque for Rs. 5 lakhs from a certain Sir J.C. Roy. The cheque comes with a rider – the money would go to the most honest man in the village, someone who would use the wealth for the benefit of the people.
The search for the honest man begins and here Bimal Roy the director takes over as he propels the viewer on a rollicking ride. A ‘lame’ postman (Motilal) is at the centre of the plot. He is actually the scriptwriter of this plan that aims to bring prosperity to the village that he had left years ago.
Seema (Sadhana) is the daughter of the postmaster (Nazir Hussain), who also looks after an ailing wife. Seema loves Rajat, the village school teacher but nearly loses her love before it all ends happily. Interestingly, the title cast begins with Sadhana Shivdasani, a rare occasion when her name is spelt with the surname.
Greed influences the powerful people of the village who soon explore avenues to cheat and pocket the money. A landlord, the village priest, a money lender and a doctor join the race even as the school teacher withdraws himself. Basanta Choudhury plays his part of a school teacher and a silent lover well.
It is a simple tale that ends with the respected postmaster picked by the entire village as the most deserving candidate for the money but not before some drama and action that leaves the scheming quartet on the run as the villagers discover their deceit.
There are long spells when Sadhana does not appear on the screen but then the presence of Motilal livens up the proceedings. Motilal carries the film on his shoulders with his flawless portrayal of a wealthy man reaching out to the common villager to serve him better. The performance won him a Filmfare best supporting actor award.
Bimal Roy was known to pay close attention to his choice of actors and he assembles a superb team where the irrepressible Kanhaiyalal matches Motilal with some fine acting. Jayant is lovable in his role of the rich land lord while Nazir Hussain is spared the customary tears. Asit Sen, Keshto Mukherjee, Rashid Khan contribute to make the movie a tribute to Bimal Roy’s impeccable direction. It was hardly surprising that Bimal Da won the Filmfare Award for the best director, third in succession, for this classic.
Parakh was not Bimal Da’s best but it was one of his best.

Lyrics :-
ek hai apni zami, ek hai apna gagan
ek hai apna jahan, ek hai apna vatan
apne sabhi sukh ek hai, apne sabhi gam ek hai
aawaz do, aawaz do hum ek hai, hum ek hai
aawaz do, aawaz do hum ek hai, hum ek hai
ye waqt khone ka nahi, ye waqt sone ka nahi
jaago vatan khatre me hai, sara chaman khatre me hai
phulo ke chehare zard hai, zulfe fiza ki gard hai
umda hua tufan hai, narve me hidustan hai
dushman se nafarat farz hai, ghar ki hifazat farz hai
bedaar ho bedaar ho, aamada-e-paigar ho
aawaz do, aawaz do hum ek hai, hum ek hai
ye hai himala ki zami, taaj-o-ajanta ki zami
sangam humari aan hai, chittaud apni shaan hai
gulmarg ka mahka chaman, jamuna ka tat, gokul ka van
ganga ke dhare apne hai, ye sab humare apne hai
kah do koi dushman nazar, uthe na bhule se idhar
kah do ke hum bedaar hai, kah do ke hum taiyaar hai
aawaz do, aawaz do hum ek hai, hum ek hai
aawaz do, aawaz do hum ek hai, hum ek hai
hum ek hai, hum ek hai, hum ek hai
hum ek hai, hum ek hai...
