Martin Ling: Building effective factory test systems with open hardware: a case study from Cynthion The Open Source Hardware Association 2025-05-31 | When manufacturing an electronic product you really need to develop two products: the device you produce, and the factory test system for it. The test system can often be the harder of the two, but is usually a private project, likely put together in a hurry, and rarely open sourced – even for open source products. Learning to build effective and economical factory test systems can be a major hurdle for newcomers. Dan Alvarez: The Quetzal-1 CubeSat: Open Sourcing the Design for Guatemala’s First Satellite The Open Source Hardware Association 2025-05-31 | This talk shares the inspiring journey of Quetzal-1, Guatemala’s first satellite, developed by a team of 100+ students, volunteers, and engineers with an average age of 21. Building the country’s first satellite posed challenges: limited know-how, tight budgets, and developing 70% of the hardware from scratch. The talk highlights the key role of open-source hardware and software and our commitment to paying it forward. Oliver Child: Printegrated Circuits: Scalable 3D Interactive Objects The Open Source Hardware Association 2025-05-31 | What if we could print interactive devices on the 3D printers we already have? This talk will give an overview of a project called Printegrated Circuits, a technique we've been developing to embed PCBs into FFF 3D prints, combining conductive and insulating filament to make interesting resistive and capacitive sensing structures in unique forms. Data is essential for effective conservation efforts. However, traditional methods of data collection are often inefficient. Advances in technology have led to the development of open-source boards that can be interfaced with sensors for efficient data collection. Eli Silver: How to turn your favorite sensor into a scientific instrument: a guide for curious maker The Open Source Hardware Association 2025-05-31 | Consumer technology is filled with precise, fast, and inexpensive sensors taking constant measurements of the world. Hobbyist electronics sites have taken many of these engineering marvels and provided easy to use breakout boards and libraries for integration into self-directed projects. The ability to measure our environment is a cornerstone of the physical sciences and consumer sensors have the potential to completely change who and where has access to these tools. But there is still a large chasm between a sensor example script and a scientific instrument. This leaves 95 innovative projects—often groundbreaking prototypes—gathering dust. Committed to open science, TU Delft is working to change this by creating open hardware resources that encourage broader knowledge sharing. One example is the Schistoscope, a smart, low-cost microscope designed for low-resource settings. Thoroughly documented as open hardware, it allows researchers to adapt and build upon it while offering a framework for documenting their own projects.
