Miserable way of scoring
updated
published a couple of weeks ago on steam, later will be available on modern consoles,
and in 2026 will be released on Megadrive/Genesis on cartridge.
Game is pretty fun to play but really easy at default difficulty,
there's also some euroshmup feeling because of the regenerating shield
but at higher difficulties is very challenging.
Visually is gorgeous considering is been programmed for a Megadrive,
it could have been an arcade in the early '90,
and the very good OST by Yuzo Koshiro fit well in the game.
I did this run on Hotshot difficulty (hardest), took me around 25 hour of gameplay
to learn and finally clear the game while on normal (default) difficulty
i almost cleared the game at first try.

Clearly an Image Fight clone (they even stole flyer graphic), it's not bad overall,
it has good graphic and ost, the main problem is the lack of multidirectional pod
that would make more sense in stages 4 and 7 where you can hardly recover with the weapons
that the game offer you.
The only solution to make the game more playable is to get the secret weapon in stage 2, its high power and homing capabilities are essential to survive all those complex stages.
I did this run for La Calice Cup 8, it's just survival, scoring would require a suicide kill tecnique
at the last boss that i didn't learn.
I played on Wolfmame 0.264 with 20Hz autofire.

Not particularly difficult, there are a couple of nasty checkpoint in the last two stages to keep in mind,
it's important getting used to the Gradius-like power up system for a smooth run.
Many sources says that this game was the main inspiration for the first Turrican on C64.
I played on Wolfmame 0.264 w/o autofire.

Clearly inspired by movies like Friday the 13th, Evil Dead, Re-Animator and many others,
is one of the easiest arcade games to learn, it just need a bit of stages memorization and
practice to learn all the moves and when use them (especially slide),
nevertheless it never get old, it's always fun to play thanks to the outstanding pixel art
(for a 88' game) and the inspired OST and sound effect that give the game the right atmosphere.
Simple survival run , i did some extra stages along the way and fought
bosses without speedrun tactics like i used to play back in the 80's.
Played on Wolfmame 0.264.

Based upon the 80's anime Macross, and arcade exclusive, is a pretty standard shmup.
Another game i played in the last "Calice Cup" it's not very hard except for the last stage
where difficulty ramp up.
Scoring is simple and based on medalling and hidden bonus, also while in valkyrie armor
every weapon power up give point instead of changing weapon.
There's a bug that prevent me from input my name in the scoring table,
the reason might be because i played on player 2 (slightly faster movement) but i'm not sure.
I made this run on Wolfmame 0.275 with 30Hz autofire.

Half shmup half racing game, scoring is mostly determined by how fast you clear a stage,
also enemy value depends on the ship position on screen,
the further to right the fastest you are and higher is the score gained,
so speedrunning is the way to go to get big puntos and eventually counterstop (i barely reached it).
This game it's a spinoff of the R-Type series,
the ship model is R-11 derived from the most famous R-9 (can be played in Final) and
the events take place concurrently with those of R-Type Delta.
I made this run for "La Calice Cup 10" so i learned routing just enough to get max score.
I played on Wolfmame 0.275 with 30Hz autofire.

It's a prototype and never reached the market but it's complete.
I learned the game while i was trying the possible choices of the just begun Calice Cup 10,
it didn't got chosen but i'm glad i discovered it,
i like the unique power up system (by eating enemies) and the strange but very good OST.
I barely got the counterstop score, not too difficult to achieve, my score should be 100.059.450 Pts.
Also it's the first game that makes me feel guilty for completing it (see the ending).
I played on wolfmame 0.264 with 30hz autofire.

Golden Axe was originally released on arcade System 16 by Sega in 1989.
As with Shinobi, this Neo Geo port is practically perfect, same gameplay and feeling,
but with some nice addition. On Neo Geo CD version there is very good orchestrated OST
from composer Richard Douglas, also those voices sample (when enemy die) have been replaced
with better quality samples. The only issue i found is on the battle with Death Adder
where the game slowdown too much, especially when that homing projectile is shoot.
I played on wolfmame 0.264 (Neo Geo CD version), the game work on original hardware too.

Shinobi was originally released on arcade System 16 by Sega in 1987.
Game is pretty much the same in every aspect, perfectly recoded to run on Neo Geo,
plus it feel more responsive than the original especially on some jumping section,
the only little bug i found is that after killing the third boss the game award you
with 4 additional pts besides of the regular bonus, nothing important really.
I played on wolfmame 0.264, the game work on original hardware too.

on Megadrive/Genesis. It's been rereleased on various consoles in 2021.
More famous for its grotesque horror graphics than its gameplay,
Gynoug is pretty standard for a shmup with the exception of the magic system
that give some variety and also very important to deal with some of the stages.
A negative note is the difficulty management, to make the game harder lazy programmers
just added more hp to all enemies and add more bullets to the same exact waves,
a very bad behaviour in shmup, because of this on hyper difficulty enemies just don't die
so you have to just dodge, not fun.
I played on hard difficulty, but if it wasn't for the above mentioned problem i would have
tried Hyper difficulty just for the sake of be insulted at end of the game,
for some disastrous translation they say some not nice words instead of praise you.

made by Hoffman (coding & soundtrack) and Tony Galvez (graphic) and released in 2022.
Essentially an improved version of the original game but with some nice QoL additions
like autofire, enhanced gui and hidden shops where to buy permanent power up on respawn.
Gameplay is pretty much the same but without stuttering scrolling and with a very good OST,
there is also a cameo of Gradius in the form of a temporary power up by transforming
in Vic Viper equipped with laser and invulnerable.
The game keep looping but it doesn't seem to get any harder so i recorded just one loop.
I played on Amiga emulator WinUAE.
The game is free and can be downloaded on Itch.io

Third chapter of the Crime fighters saga, maybe the hardest of the three,
require two loop to complete, with second loop considerably harder with different enemies
disposition and a lot of new enemies encounter (bosses are mostly the same).
Also most bosses require frame perfect specific tactics to beat,
while the last boss often require more then one life because of the strict timing to pass his defence.
I used Kyle , the fastest/weakest/longest reach character, not very good for scoring but fun to play.
Game has some cameo from previous Konami, a Twin Bee toy (and another toy i can't figure out),
and a couple of arcade cabinet in st. 7, one is Scramble while the other one seem Penta from
Penguin adventures, a popular and fun MSX game,
also a boss battle theme remind me of some gradius theme, very good OST btw.
I played Japan version (JAC) on wolfmame 0.264 w/o autofire.

I did this run during Calice Cup 9, the game seem pretty experimental with lot of ideas
but some of them lead to some frustration, expecially the choice of making your ship
slower on vertical movements, in my experience is never a good choice.
There's some cameo from previous game like the deadly yashichi from Vulgus
or the spinning skull coin from SonSon,
also it might be the first game in which appear the capcow (Holstein) but i'm not sure.
The game consist in 16 round but after 1st loop you keep repeating stage from 8 to 16
until 10M is reached, at that point game end with a brief congratulation message.
Overall the game is pretty hard, especially because of movement speed, and memorization
does bring little help, hours of gameplay experience are needed to master the weirdness of
this game and to reach 10M pts.
Played on Wolfmame 0.264 with two autofire (8,5hz + 30hz).

It's not a very hard game, just need some tactics on boss fight and some memorization
of stage 4 that can easely steal a life if understimated.
I played on Japan(JAA) version that consist in one loop and has lives
and limited amount of health, while US and World version have only one life
with a certain amount of health decreasing with time but that can be stored without limit,
so if you play well it's possible to clear both loops of those version.
Also i did forgot how good the OST of this game is.
I did this run on Wolfmame 0.264.

released in 2020 on Steam and later on consoles.
Pretty good game , heavely inspired by Truxton series by Toaplan but
with more maneuverability and tiny hitboxes (you can even micrododge).
There's a basic scoring system, medals (up to 10k) and secret sections/bonus.
Game loops indefinitely even so there is no cap in rank increase so
shall become unplayable at a certain point.
Noteworthy are the pixel art and the OST (especially stage 6).

on arcade and later on consoles, more recently on pc.
Various element of gameplay come from 19xx series, infact i consider Varth part of the series,
or at least a spin off set on another planet (Varth) 700 years later.
This game is also known for Ryu's cameo, in addition to various others (Yashichi, Mobi chan, etc..).
I did a podless run for scoring (50K for every stage w/o pods) and i used a "bomb macro"
to quickly refill bombs. This macro consist in 30Hz autofire on direction down,
this because in this game ship movements recharge bombs,
most of highscore run (including wr) use this even if it feel like a tool assisted.
I did this run on Wolfmame 0.264 with 30Hz autofire and the above mentioned macro.
For a more skillfull run (with manual bomb recharging)

Old but still fun shmup , it doesn't require much tactics but require some raw skill
in dodging bullets and reading enemies behaviour (at least for simple clear),
listening the ten second loop music theme is a bit annoying for an entire hour
but the gameplay is fun so its not a problem.
Scoring in this game consist in never die and sacrifice all the twenty life the game provide
to the final boss, just kill it and than immediatly suicide with the last barrage of shots,
playing well with a high percentage of kill ratio give higher bonus score.
This is just a casual low score run, no final boss milk and a lot of silly death but some good dodges.
Also this is the game were i did my first arcade 1CC ever (back in the 80's).
i played on Wolfmame 0.264 with a 20hz autofire, even though I haven't used it much
because this game require much more precision.

Pretty simple game if you know what to do, it can quickly end your credits if you don't pay attention.
The only noteworthy feature is that you shoot left and right with dedicated buttons,
so you can walk right while shooting to the left, this give some playability to the slow cyborg.
I did some little scoring in stage 1 but i don't really know how to get good points,
considering i scored 2.6M while wr is more than 11M.

SNES/SFC exclusive and later ported on GBA,
it's been developed by Tamtex (actually part of Irem) and published by Irem in 1993.
This is the first R-type where is possible to chose different Force units
with their own set of weapons and abilities,
also there's a more refined charging system that let you choose between two cannon
in real time, Wave Cannon and Hyper Cannon.
Wave is the standard cannon , charged at full power shoot a powerfull beam (Mega Wave Cannon)
that pass trough everything (best weapon in R-type Final).
Hyper is a special cannon, charged at full power shoot immediately a short range spread shot
and after that let you shoot powerfull explosive bullets for a limited time,
also while Hyper is active the Bits (if equipped) spin around the ship dealing great contact damage
and erasing enemy bullets (can still pass trough gap though),
when Hyper ends the ship goes into overheat and can't use cannon until cooled down.
Like the first two R-type to 1CC the game 2 loops are needed,
while first loop is pretty easy, just learn and memorize enemy pattern,
second loop is unforgiving because of higher bullet density and speed and more tanky enemies,
also the erratic behavior of Mega Wave Cannon (sometimes skip some enemies) doesn't help.
I did this run using Round force that correspond to play on hard difficulty,
every Force has its own power/damage potential
which practically determines difficulty in a subtle way,
the line "for ace pirot use" in Round description should give a hint.
I played Japan version (to avoid silly censorship) on SNES emulator Snes9x
with Blargg's NTSC (rgb) shader.

I begin playing this in Calice Cup 8 but i couldn't get the 1all so
i continued training after the tourney ended, the game is worth the time spent.
Scoring is simple and fun , consist mainly in collecting medal,
you get medal by killing enemy with lard shot , a special weapon that consume lard meter,
lard is replenished collecting pigs that spawn by killing enemy with normal shot (or bombing),
so you keep switching shots the whole time,
also switching from lard to normal cause all the medal on screen to converge on your ship
at the cost of a portion of lard meter (cash in).
My run is very basic and my routing very rough (if there's one)
but my goal was to reach 100M and 95 is good enough.
The game has 2 loop but to access 2nd loop noMiss in first loop is needed,
definitely out of my league right now.
I played on Wolfmame 0.264 , emulation isn't perfect and slowdown and speedup
are too sudden, but still very playable.

Very good and addicting game full of roguelike elements with a lot of stuff to unlock/discover
that also deals with sensitive topics like anxiety, depression, and suicide (mostly in Story Mode).
I played Endless Nightmare, some kind of survival mode, where to power up your heart
you spend Karma (currency in this mode) to buy from a random selection of Gift (PowerUp),
the run end when you can't keep up with the ever increasing difficulty of the fights.
I chose Alter Twin because of the high damage output out of the box of her charged shot
and the ability to generate four helper by dealing damage,
the downside is the lack of a main shot but with the collateral effect of narrowing down
the selection of available gift in the shop, this increases the possibility of some very useful Gift.
I reached Cycle 9 and beat lvl 53 monster before my poor choices killed my run.

Pretty fun game that uses "grazing" as main mechanic,
so to charge hyper (soul collect) you need to graze a lot,
hypers are essential to both survive and score.
What really stand out in this game is the really good art and music,
it seem to be playing inside an oriental paint with great care for details
and all the bosses are inspired by korean folklore (also very well painted).
The only flaw i can find is the lack of enemies variety,
even so they change bullets pattern from stage to stage.
I played arcade mode on "extreme" difficulty,
that (as far as i can tell) correspond roughly to "hard" in touhou games.

Not my favorite among Capcom beat'm up,
i think it lacks some variety in combo and fighting choice for a '93 arcade but still a fun game.

Considered a spiritual successor of Sunset Riders, the same team behind both game,
gameplay differs thanks to the hack'n'slash elements added in this game,
the ability to use close quarter tecnique, that also cancel bullets,
lead to more aggressive tactics especially in autoscroll stages.
Imho this game is harder than its "predecessor", even if it give 3 energy for life,
mostly because some boss fights are more frantic and also random sometimes.
I'm pretty happy with this run and if wasn't for the messed up last boss
it could have been a NoMiss.
I played on Wolfmame 0.249 with a 20hz autofire,
emulation on mame its still imperfect so some trasparency and transition

I was able to 1cc this game a couple times back in the 90' but
i wasn't very consistent with some enemy so i had to learn better
strats from other player to manage difficult fight (Satan Goat for istance).
The game doesn't keep track of any score so gold is the reference

it's a remake/sequel of Touhou 6 "Embodiment of Scarlet Devil".
The first touhou game i clear, although not in the main series,
is pretty good in both gameplay and visual, also a very good OST.
I played with Reimu in Lunatic difficulty, it took me around 70 hours
to achieve my first clear, i haven't much experience in this series
so i used a lot of bomb and i died a lot,
especially in stage 5 boss i had a big meltdown and chain death 4 times,
but all and all a decent run for me.
Also this game is usually cheap on Steam at less than 3 euro on sales.

Punishing game that require some rank control to survive,
so best to avoid power up item after max power.
Most enemies have a peculiar way to shoot, most of them cant fire in straight vertical line,
they aim slightly off by some degree, this can be used to cheese some bosses like in stage 3.
I made this run on Japan version that uses only 2 buttons (Us has 6 buttons)
so i had to switch weapon by collecting item to have access to different bomb,
this make the game harder but autofire ease the pain by letting some quick kill
on hard bosses, especially the last one.

and recently published on PS4 and Switch by Hamster (Arcade Archive).
Definetely a Raiden clone but well done, similar mechanics and weapons,
there are even similar secrets, like the hidden stars (stage 1 and stage 4)
that works similar to Raiden's fairy (star let you keep your shot power after death)
and the cars that can be destroyed for 50k each (stage 1 and stage 3, don't know how to trigger).
In this run my aim was to reach 10M Pts, common goal for games that loops indefinetely,
so i did a little more then 2 loop.
I used some strats to ease difficult bosses like in stage 4 where i get red shot and
i let live all boss part to force a hardware slowdown (too many big sprites i guess),
on last boss i just time out using only one bomb and keeping my stock for second loop.

it's the third installement of the "Tank" series, preceded by Tank Battalion (1980 Arcade)
and Battle City (1985 Famicom).
The goal of the game is to defend your base while you destroy the various wave of enemy tanks,
if your HQ is destroyed it's Game Over not matter how many lives remain in stock,
every four stages there is a boss battle (huge tanks).
There are various weapons and bonus (all time based), but the most important thing
is to power up your normal shot so to have the ability to destroy metal barriers
and manage complicated stages more easily, setting up a good defence is essential.
I played on Wolfmame 0.225 with a 20Hz autofire (because i'm lazy, it's not really needed).
and also released by Taito in 1991.
Pretty hard and frustrating shooter that take inspiration from R-type series
but fail to reproduce the same playability and innovation.
Gameplay is standard enough for a hori shmup with the addition of the
Vaws (some kind of Force/psy bit) that act like arms and rotate
opposite to ship movement direction and give a good protection from bullet,
they come in three color but only red is powerfull/usefull enough to proceed
through the six stages without too much pain,
and still you need strict routing to succeed in this hard game.
I played on Wolfmame 0.225 with 30Hz autofire on default setting (normal)
but i'm not sure if Mame setting are correct because the bullet speed in
the recently released ACA seem slower to me.

It has the tipical gameplay of a Contra game but with the addition of a lock button
that stop your movement an let you aim in 8 way, very important in boss fight
that are infact the most fun part of the game with a lot of different phases and attacks.

developed by Toaplan in 1990.
Very fun game, easy compared to most shmup, it's a mix of shmup and run'n'gun,
without forced scrolling is possible to stop, but not for too long,
because your energy depletes acting as a timer and must be replenished constantly,
this make the game both tactical and frantic.
There are 2 basic weapons, that can be switched collecting C items,
a 16 way laser (single shot that can rotate in any direction) and
a fixed 3 way shot (pretty good and most used), both can be powered up
by collecting P items.
There are also SP items that give speed, energy capacity, barrier
and two weapons, burner and super ball (powerfull weapon),
and a red SP that give a 1UP, it's rare and i believe it can only drop in stage 2
in a couple of location and only in first loop.
Extra lives can be earned only in the first loop so i did some scoring to reach at least 1.8M pts
so to begin loop 2 with 8 life (9 if red SP show up).
This game has a simple rank system, every loop is harder then the previous one,
game start to be serious in loop 3 but max difficulty is reached in loop 7,
difficulty grows slowly but can be seen comparing how some enemy shoot,
for istance those yellow tank that appear in stage 7 in the area with cryopod
on both left and right side.
There's a lot of secrets/cameo from various Toaplan game,
i showed most of them in this run, but for a better explanation
of how trigger every secret i suggest to check Shmup Wiki at this link:
https://shmups.wiki/library/OutZone/Strategy
Extra trivia: in Batsugun the ending of Jeeno (type-A pilot) suggest
that he is the main character of this game.
I played on Wolfmame 0.249 with 30Hz autofire.

developed by Vagues Games, basically just one guy "K. Okada",
and released on Windows in 2016.
The same dev released "Flying Pancake Octopus in the Black Hole"
of which i made a run 2 year ago: youtube.com/watch?v=ILXan8Zhh64
A new chapter, called "Another Cry", is currently in development
and should be released under Exa-arcadia (arcade) this year.
This game take great inspiration from creature lived in the cambrian period,
in fact every enemy is designed after real fossil included of scientific name.
Gameplay is pretty standard for an horizontal shmup,
there's a main weapon, a secondary weapon and bomb (determined by s.w.)
that charge slowly over time and by collecting blue/red fragments,
there are more than 15 main and secondary weapon to choose from,
not counting their rare and more powerfull version,
but what really stand out are the many bosses, full of phases and bullet pattern
with very little repetition, very fun to play but alot to learn,
so to compensate game gives a lot of lives (by collecting 1up coin).
Also great metal OST that make me like this game even more.
I would have preferred a run with less deaths but every try is more than 3 hours
so i'm ok with this, at least i did a decent last boss.

initially announced in 2009 but, due to a troubled development, released
in 2018 on Switch and later on other platform.
Faithful to the original (with just little change in some hitbox)
is a pretty easy game compared to the average arcade but still very enjoiable,
mostly thank to the gorgeous graphic an rearranged soundtrack.
I played on hardest difficulty to make the game more challenging,
especially bosses are trivial in normal mode because of low health,
in hardest you can actually have a fair fight.
I made this run on Steam version,
often discounted is a must have for a couple of euro.

in 1988 on M72 hardware.
Known for its difficulty, fine graphic and fast gameplay this game
was a success in late '80.
You take control of a ninja equiped with four different weapons
that can be upgraded and that can be switched at any time with
a dedicated button, also you can get up to two shadows
that shoot and mimic ninja movements for more fire power
and a more tactical approach.
Gameplay is fast and fun but there are some random elements that can
lead to some frustration like in stage 6 where tanky enemies appear
while you are landing and are basically unavoidable,
main reason of the high difficulty imho, anyway still a really good game.
Difficulty can be mitigated by getting only one shadow, big enemies
will get only half of the usual health.
A clarification: the tactic i used on final boss is NOT guaranteed,
success depend on how green lighting spawn, if their trajectory is low
they will most likely hit the ground otherwise they get you thanks to
a good homing ability.
I played on Wolfmame 0.249 w/o autofire.

Visually gorgeous, accompanied by a very good ost
and inspired by game like Gradius and R-type this shmup
passed under the radar in the early 90', mostly because of the
success of street fighters 2 in those years.
Gameplay might seem similar to R-type but only superficially,
the tentacle mechanic and the charged shot only available
when the flint (force) is locked make for a unique and more tactical playstyle.
In this run i used a "score bug" to achive more then 10M pts by triggering
a specific event for every life i had in stock.
Also i got 4 secret 1up in stage 1 and 3 (2 x loop),
guaranteed if specific action are performed (just do what i do in the video).
Even if this is a "scoring run" i didn't get a really good score because i
failed one of the "score bug" chance, a normal good run should be
around 12M+ or more if extra life show up,
anyway this is my best 2All for now while my best score is 13.6M (stage2-2),
will upload more when i get better game clear.
I played on Wolfmame 0.225 and i used 2 autofire
at 20Hz and 30Hz.
The 20Hz was necessary because when game slowdown
30Hz stop working correctly , too many input i think,
this problem seems corrected in Arcade Archives, but i haven't checked yet.

developed by Tribute games and published by Dotemu on June 2022.
Visually game take great ispiration from Konami's arcade games of late 80's
and early 90's, while gameplay is more complex with various chain combo
and special move that can be charged by chaining or taunting,
and evasion move that can be followed by an homing attack.
There are 7 characters to choose from each with their own stats
and tecnique. I used Raphael because of its power and speed
and very good combo.
i played on arcade mode at gnarly (hard) difficulty so as to have a good challenge,
okay difficulty is too easy and forgiving and even if a run is more than 2h
is possible to collect 7-8 life , more than enough to clear the game.
Also a very good OST composed by Tee Lopes with the collaboration
of various musicians and singers.

developed by Konami in 1994 and later ported on super famicom.
The game is composed of 9 stages, 7 standard plus 1 special that appear
randomly after stage 1 and another special stage after the credits.
Like every other Parodius game this chapter has a vicious difficulty rank,
even so i think is more manageble than Sexy Parodius.
In my run i kept rank at bay until stage 3 by taking only 3 power up,
after that point its better to full power to balance the difficulty of later stages,
anyway the unwanted double death at stage 3 made stage 4 and 5 significantly easier.
I used Koitsu, literally "this guy", most likely the best character in the game
because of his screan wide shot and high fire rate.
I played on Wolfmame 0.244 with autofire at 20Hz.

published only on PS2 by Konami in 2004 but developed mainly by
Treasure (Radiant Silvergun, Ikaruga) and G.rev (Border Down, Under defeat).
Graphic is very detailed and you can recognize the style of the two software
house and i think they did a good job at preserving the Konami spirit,
also the OST is very good with various orchestrated theme.
Game is pretty hard and very long, more than 1 hour for 1 loop (infinite loop),
but gameplay is good and fun, hitboxes are tiny and your ship's movements
are very precise even at max speed (you can go back to slow speed),
and there are no check points and when you die you can recover your option.
In this run i use the most common and powerfull customized Vic Viper,
armed with spread bomb , ripple laser and freeze option to adapt to
various situations and quick kill bosses,
anyway this didn't stop me from die a lot.
I played on PS2 emulator Pcsx2 1.6, emulation is pretty good with no lag
or slowdown , just some gliches in the first FMV.

and released in 1989.
Pretty underrated game, fast paced and packed with ideas,
back in '89 was ahead of its time, maybe the first shmup with
integrated rapid/full fire (up to 20Hz) i saw.
The game start with 3 different ship each with its own weapon and bomb,
when you lose a ship the next type come into play (similar to "Moon Cresta"),
after stage 4 remaining ships combine in a powerfull big ship (larger hitbox).
Game is short, 15 min of gameplay, but full of unique enemy and bosses
that can be destroyed piece by piece for higher score and bonus stages
rapresented by blue pills that make you warp at high speed and apply
a X10 multiplier for the duration of the effect (less then 10 seconds).
Also after stage 4 there are branching path that can be choosen by
killing or letting escape bosses and latter option lead to combined and more
difficult bosses (a mechanic i never saw in others arcade).
The soundtrack, composed by Yoshinori Nagumo, is realy good,
with different tracks for every stage and boss.
I played on wolfmame 0.225 with 30Hz autofire.
For comparison here an old run with default rapid fire: youtu.be/WM3CViUFke8?list=PL3Q26811K0d-VQUqpvY6KlljV8WnetCCg

While the first chapter from '92 was a very frustrating game,
with its wild rank that didn't allow to power up more than one weapon
before becoming unmanageble, this new release is balanced
and never unfair, all aspect that make the first game unfun has been
revisited and corrected.
There are 4 main weapon that can be rotated,
missile and defensive pod (different for each weapon),
also there are hyper shot that recharge after a few seconds
at the cost of downgrading the active weapon for a little while,
in addition blue and green hyper cancel bullets.
Weapons must be changed frequently to adapt to various situation
and to survive, expecially on boss fights (very fun).
Also game has a very good soundtrack composed by Allister Brimble
known for other famous ost like Alien Breed, Project-X and more.

I did this run following the special extend strat,
so i did let fall 3 extra life so collecting the fourth i gained full stock back
with no rank increase, also i skipped extra bosses and kept score low
so i could get special extend in last stage (after two death so rank dropped).
i used Strawman C with its powerfull shot and a still decent speed,
one of the stronger character in the game.
I did this run in january 2021 on Wolfmame 0.219.

developed by Konami in 1989,
and later re-released on Nintendo virtual console, should have been
a port of arcade Thunder Cross but became its own original title,
still considered part of the TC series.
I played on BlueMSX emulator, configured with msx turbo R machine,
and used a rom patched with "turbo fix" (written by sd_snatcher)
that make the game run smoother with no slowdown and
fix stage 7 boss bug that prevented the spawn of blue ball.
Game is relatively easy compared to Gradius series but
has its own difficulty spikes like the fixed stage 7 boss (i died alot there)
and some very bad placed checkpoints, also the lack of slowdown
make some stages less manageble because of sniping bullets.

and realesed on Steam in 2018.
Game is a vertical shmup (with some horizontal section) with a palette
composed by only four color (green, orange, black and white),
full of reference to other famous shmup like Gradius, R-type, Cho Ren Sha
and many others but the most distinctive feature is the story mode
that must be completed to unlock the full game, no spoiler on that.
Gameplay is various and dynamic thanks to the adaptive rank system
and a lot of selectable weapon to choose from, unlocked throughout the game,
that give flexibility in dealing with stages and bosses.
Scoring is based mostly on chaining enemies to keep a high multiplier,
easy in the first stages but require an heavy routing later on.
I played more survival than scoring but i did well enough (apart from a very bad stage 1.4)
to earn the ZeroRanger achivement, basically i did all challenge in one run,
so i'm pretty satisfied.

released two month ago by "Kigekiyahonpo",
a team that has developed very good free doujin shmup
like Blaynix and Kaikan.
Zakesta take great inspiration from various game,
especially from Star Force, Zanac, Aleste
and many other 90's shmup from Compile and Hudson.
Visual and OST are really something and fit perfectly in a game like this,
even in low-res there are multiple scrolling level and effects
and the music is full of vocaloid.
Pretty easy as a shmup played for survival (i cleared it in my first blind run)
on the other hand played for scoring is way more challenging and fun,
in any case a very accessible shmup suited for everyone.
This is my best run, unfortunately i missed some destructible cube
on final stage and lost around 5K,
plus there's still room for improvement, especially on the last part of the game.
Anyway i'm pretty satisfied with my score.

In this run i use Predator warrior, maybe the easier char to learn,
i like his very long orizontal jumps and special moves
that give a lot of mobility and make the gameplay dynamic.
This run is mostly survival with little scoring,
enemies hit hard and can kill you in no time so is always better
to be ready to use desperation move, especially in crowded situations.
I played on Wolfmame 0.225.
