While I really enjoyed the book and couldn't put it down, there were a couple of fundamental areas where I disagree with the world as McCarthy has presented it in this novel. 1. Humans inevitably form community. The world does not stay in sustained violence and chaos. 2. The presumption of violence and chaos is used as justification for The Man's approach to life: one of pragmatic, defensive violence that slowly degrades his humanity. 3. This idea participates in some fantasies of toxic masculinity that are bound up in the false idea that men have instrumental value (protection and providing) rather than instinsic value. These stories participate in a type of fantasy where men can prove their value under this model and glorify their suffering. And that's sad.

This time Emily interviews Alexandra about one of her pet topics: the under appreciation of the arts and humanities. Yes, this is a whole hour of Alexandra absolutely losing it over this topic.
This month Alexandra and Emily discuss the romance genre. How do these stories navigate the dynamics of love and power? Starting with the middle ages and arriving at modern novels, we discuss how the concept of consent has been at the forefront of romance literature across time. It seems like a simple concept, and yet we still struggle with it. Why?

Whether its repetitious tropes, lack of character development, or simply not being the right audience, let's discuss how my relationship with YA is changed. How has your relationship with reading YA changed over the years?

What is dark academia? Can a book merely be set in an academic setting or is more required? What are the themes and questions this genre brings up? What are its pitfalls? What does it have in common with grim-dark fantasy?
I discuss all this and more via analysis of The Secret History, If We Were Villains, The Maidens, and Ninth House.
I would love to know your thoughts on this discussion! Please leave comments below!

We have had so much fun over the past year and a half, I had to share about it with you. This is distinct from a book club, and in my opinion, vastly superior.

It is highly diverse, yet held together by the strong continuity of the Catholic Church and the publication efforts of monasteries. In this video I give an overview of three major periods: Anglo-Saxon literature, Anglo-Norman literature, and Middle English Literature.

This fairy tale also explores idealized femininity, which should be good but not weak. Finally, I point out how some of the narrative structures relate to famous Biblical stories and the way it explores the theology of justice and mercy.

Watch me scrap a few pieces together and complete an entry all while talking about the beginning of The Old Curiosity Shop! I think my favorite little bit of the beginning of this novel is how well Dickens creates these whimsical, precious little corners in the middle of dingy London, giving us hope that magic and peace can be found anywhere!

SHERIDAN LE FANUA Lovely Jaunt2020-08-26 | The vampire narrative is always a perfect vehicle for exploring taboo sexual desires, and Carmilla does not disappoint in its exploration of female-female attraction. It's creepy, it's gothic, it's everything I want out of a vampire story! And it's more. In this video, I discuss some possible reasons for why we see this tension between paternal authority and sexual expression as well as the connection to the Genesis narrative.

It is a meditation on the ravages of war and the grief of a nation.

He loves his father. He hates his father. The father who is with him in the morning is a different person than the one who comes home drunk and singing.

Humans need hope as something to keep us going in difficult, tragic circumstances, but when hope is disappointed every single time, it has the power to crush your spirit.
In Charlemagne we have a huuuuge contrast with Roland. When he begins his fight, he humbly prays for God's deliverance, instead of vaunting and declaring he wished for even more enemies! At the end of his victory, we see a king who is tired and sad, not puffed up with vanity and glory.
