Padmasambhava, also known as Guru Rinpoche (Precious Guru), was an Indian Vajrayana Buddhist master from the 8th century who introduced Tantric Buddhism to Tibet. He is considered the founder of the Nyingma school, the oldest tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, and is revered as the "Second Buddha" by his followers. He is believed to have come to Tibet at the invitation of King Trisong Detsen to help establish the first Tibetan Buddhist monastery, Samye Monastery.

A number of translations have been consulted to render the writing into modern English parlance.
Margery Kempe (c. 1373 – after 1438) was an English Catholic mystic, known for writing through dictation The Book of Margery Kempe, a work considered by some to be the first autobiography in the English language. Her book chronicles her domestic tribulations, her extensive pilgrimages to holy sites in Europe and the Holy Land, as well as her mystical conversations with God. She is honoured in the Anglican Communion, but has not been canonised as a Catholic saint.

Professor Raghavan N. Iyer (1930 -1995) was an internationally known philosopher, political theorist, and spiritual practitioner who devoted his life to the intellectual and spiritual uplift of human society. The only Rhodes Scholar from India in 1950 to Oxford, he secured First Class Honors in Philosophy, Politics and Economics and later earned a D. Phil. Degree in moral and political philosophy. For eight years, he was Fellow and Lecturer in Politics at St. Anthony's College, Oxford, then Visiting Professor at the Universities of Oslo, Ghana and Chicago, and lectured at the College of Europe in Belgium, the Erasmus Seminar in Holland, and at Harvard, Bowdoin, Berkeley, U.C.L.A., Rand Corporation and the California Institute of Technology. He was professor of political philosophy at the University of California, Santa Barbara for 21 years.
His message is that a renewed humankind is now emerging, and his writings address the causes of the global situation, the nature of this evolution, and the manner in which individuals can participate fully in this collective transformation.
Dr Iyer was a practitioner and member of the Theosophical Foundation and wrote that:
"Initiation into Theosophical metaphysics is more than an intellectual or moral enterprise; it is a continuous spiritual exercise in the development of intuitive and cognitive capacities that are the highest available to humans, a process that includes from the first a blending of the head and the heart through the interaction of viveka and vairagya, discrimination and detachment. Even our initial apprehension of a statement of Theosophical metaphysics involves an ethical as well as mental effort, just as even the smallest application of a Theosophical injunction to our moral life requires some degree of mental control and the deeper awareness, universal and impersonal in nature, that comes from our higher cognitive capacities. Moral growth, for a Theosophist, presupposes “the silent worship of abstract or noumenal Nature, the only divine manifestation”, that is “the one ennobling religion of Humanity.”

Sen no Rikyū (1522 -1591), was a Japanese tea master considered the most important influence on the chanoyu, the Japanese "Way of Tea", particularly the tradition of wabi-cha. Rikyū’s life unfolded during a turbulent period in Japanese history—an age of warlords and shifting powers—but in the midst of that chaos, he cultivated a space of serenity. His teachings arose from Zen Buddhism and the profound silence of mindful observation. He once said, “In the small, seek the great.” This encapsulates the heart of his worldview: that in the smallest actions—the placing of a cup, the bow before pouring water, the sweeping of a path—there lies an opportunity for awakening.
Central to Rikyū’s vision of life is the concept of wabi-sabi—the beauty of imperfection, impermanence, and incompleteness. He brought this aesthetic into the tea ceremony by simplifying and refining it until only the essential remained. He preferred rustic, handmade tea bowls with irregular shapes and muted colors over ornate Chinese porcelain. These objects, flawed yet harmonious, reminded participants of their own impermanence and the natural rhythm of life.

It was composed before the common era, most likely between 500-400BC. Some scholars claim it was written later, either in the eighth century by a follower of Shankara, or as late as the fourteenth century during a resurgence of Shankara's teaching.
The subtle philosophical truths are expounded in the form of a lucid dialogue between the teenager sage Ashtavakra and his royal disciple, the King-seer Janaka. To Ashtavakra, Self-knowledge through direct mystical intuition is the only goal to be reached and experienced in the dynamic silence of one’s own deepest meditation.

Vairochana did not attribute these Ati Yoga source texts to himself, but rather to Garab Dorje, who was revered as a full emanation of Vajrasattva in human form. Vairochana’s translations stand on their own as jewels of Wisdom, the core teaching being always the same: the luminous, natural, non-dual mind of Great Perfection itself.

Chokgyur Lingpa was a tertön or "treasure revealer". Regarded as one of the major tertöns in Tibetan history, his termas are widely practiced by both the Kagyu and Nyingma schools. Chokgyur Lingpa was someone who the majority of masters accepted upon simply hearing his name and connecting with his teachings, without any dispute or effort of their own.

'Thunder, Perfect Mind' is the title of a coptic text that uses paradoxical language to describe a feminine divine figure who embodies both power and vulnerability, and who is present in all aspects of existence. The title itself, "Thunder, Perfect Mind," is a metaphorical description of this divine figure, highlighting her powerful voice (thunder) and her comprehensive, all-encompassing nature (perfect mind).
It follows a poetic structure, and has received scholarly attention for its gnomic style and unclear subject. It speaks about the divine in paradoxical terms, as both honored and cursed, as life and death, and as both the cause of peace and war. The poem also emphasizes the idea that the divine exists both inside and outside of oneself, and that one's judgment and salvation are dependent on their relationship to the divine. It offers a unique perspective on the nature of the divine and the individual's relationship to it, and it highlights the idea of duality, non-duality, and the interconnectedness of opposing forces.
The "thunder" aspect signifies the powerful, awe-inspiring, and sometimes overwhelming nature of the divine presence. It's a force that commands attention and can be disruptive, much like the natural phenomenon of thunder.
The Perfect Mind aspect refers to the divine figure's comprehensive understanding and encompassing nature. It suggests a state of complete knowledge and awareness, where all opposites are reconciled.
The text itself is filled with paradoxical statements, where the divine figure claims to be both the beginning and the end, the strong and the weak, the male and the female. This paradoxical nature reflects the idea that the divine transcends ordinary human categories and limitations.
The text is also unique in its portrayal of a feminine divine figure who is not limited to traditional roles of motherhood or nurturing. She is portrayed as powerful, all-knowing, and present in all aspects of life, including the seemingly contradictory or paradoxical.

Shunryu Suzuki (1904-1971) was born into a family of Buddhist monks in Japan. He received spiritual education of the Soto School since childhood and served as the abbot of a temple during World War II. In 1959, he moved to San Francisco and discovered the growing interest of Americans in Zen Buddhism. In 1962, he founded the Old Jinshan Zen Center and subsequently established the Tassajara Zen Mountain Center, which was the first Buddhist temple outside Asia specifically for Western practitioners. Through his books and doctrines, Suzuki translated the complex Zen philosophy into a language that is easier for Western readers to understand.

Julian of Norwich (1342-c 1416) was the most important English mystic of the 14th century. She wrote the best known surviving book in the English language written by a mystic, 'Revelations of Divine Love'. The book is the first written in English by a woman. Through the Passion, Julian was led to visions of the Trinity and of the universe as it exists in God. She lived in permanent seclusion as an anchoress in her cell, which was attached to St Julian's Church, Norwich. The anchoresses or “recluses”, in their cells, devoted themselves to prayer, meditation and study. In this way they developed a highly refined human and religious sensitivity which earned them the veneration of the people. Many people of every age and condition would seek the recluses out for spiritual advice and guidance. It was not, therefore, a complete withdrawal from society, nor an individualistic choice. Julian provided counsel to many people, including the mystic Margery Kempe, as well as to many who were going through difficulties in life and sought her spiritual guidance.

The Hua Hu Ching is a book containing later teachings attributed to Lao Tzu, the author of the Tao Te Ching. It is also known as "The Educate the Barbarians Sutra". While the Tao Te Ching is widely known and revered, the Hua Hu Ching's teachings are believed to be of equal importance.
The Hua Hu Ching's teachings focus on attaining enlightenment and mastery through a path similar to the Tao Te Ching. They offer a practical guide to living a virtuous life, embracing the present moment, and discovering one's true self.
The Hua Hu Ching's history is somewhat mysterious. While the original text was discovered in the Mogao Caves, it was also banned and ordered to be burned during a time of political turmoil in the 14th century. As a result, there are few complete and accurate manuscripts today, but the teachings have been preserved through oral transmission by Taoist masters.
Lao Tzu (l. c. 500 BCE, also known as Laozi or Lao-Tze) was a Chinese philosopher credited with founding the philosophical system of Taoism. He is best known as the author of the Laozi (later retitled the Tao-Te-Ching translated as “The Way of Virtue” or “The Classic of the Way and Virtue”) the work which exemplifies his thought. The name by which he is known is not a personal name but an honorific title meaning 'Old Man' or 'Old Master.' Legends concerning Lao-Tzu also claim he was the contemporary and teacher of Confucius.

The text contains the heart teachings of ancient Bönpo Dzogchen Masters, translated and commented on by Yongdzin Lopön Tenzin Namdak Rinpoche, the current holder of this unique lineage.
The Yungdrung Bön (Bön) Lineage tradition is one of the oldest indigenous spiritual traditions in the world. Originating in Central Asia with Tongpa Shenrap Miwoche (considered by tradition to be a full Buddha), the Bön Lineage teachings have been transmitted unbroken from teacher to student for over 17,000 years. This profound and uninterrupted transmission through generations has ensured the preservation and vitality of the Bön tradition, teachings and practices across millennia.
Often referred to as Tibetan Bön Buddhism, Bön Lineage teachings share many similarities with Tibetan Buddhism yet maintain unique traditions, texts, rituals and practices intent on cultivating openness of heart, purification of obscurations and direct realisation of primordial awareness.

The Linji lu (Record of Linji) has been an essential text of Chinese and Japanese Zen Buddhism for nearly a thousand years. A compilation of sermons, statements, and acts attributed to the great Chinese Zen master Linji Yixuan, it serves as both an authoritative statement of Zen’s basic standpoint and a central source of material for Zen koan practice. Zen practitioners cherish it for its unusual simplicity, directness, and ability to inspire.
Linji Yixuan ( died 866 CE) was the founder of the Linji school of Chán Buddhism during the Tang dynasty, China.

still the body
still the mind
still the voice inside
in silence
feel the stillness move
***
lift the veil
that obscures
the heart
and there
you will find
what you are
looking for".
Text: Kabir (15th century)

"Shab" – inspired by the Sanskrit and Hindustani word shabda (शब्द), which means "word" or "sound."
"Nura" – derived from the Arabic nūr (نور), which means "light."
"Shabnura" (Shub-noo-rah) can represent Kabir's verses as words of light, a poetic expression that illuminates the soul and brings inner peace.
Sri H. W. L. Poonja (1910 -1997) was born in Lucknow, India, known as "Poonjaji" or "Papaji" , was an Indian sage and jivanmukta (liberated being) who taught Self-enquiry as advocated by Ramana Maharshi.

Mañjuśrīmitra (d. 740 CE) was an Indian Buddhist scholar. He became the main student of Garab Dorje and a teacher of Dzogchen. He was a resident at Nalanda University where he became a respected Yogācāra scholar and practitioner
As explained by Yeshe Donden, "Manjushrimitra wrote the Bodhicittabhavana, in order to explain Ati Yoga to the Mahayana Buddhists who were in the majority in India at that time, and in particular to his fellow scholars from Nalanda University. Experts have determined that the work is written in the style of a learned Indian scholar, using the philosophy of post sixth century A.D. Mahayana Buddhism. Meditation on the Bodhichitta presents the Ati Yoga Semde teachings in a logical, intellectually cogent way with a high level of scholarly coherence. In this work, Manjushrimitra emphasized that intellectualism and logic do not bring about enlightenment and that “Those who seek the Truth should embrace direct experience if they hope to acquire realization.” We can see that Manjushrimitra has gone far beyond the concept of Bodhichitta found in Buddhist sutra and tantric writings and arrived at an understanding of Bodhichitta as presented in Ati Yoga (where it means the essential nature of mind, or awareness)."
Compiled by Yeshe Donden (Roger Calverley) integrating various contemporary English translations.

Hui-neng (638-713) was a seminal figure in Buddhist history and is one of the most beloved and respected figure in Zen Buddhism. An illiterate woodcutter who attained enlightenment in a flash, he became the Sixth Patriarch of Chinese Zen, and is regarded as the founder of the "Sudden Enlightenment" school. He is the supreme exemplar of the fact that neither education nor social background has any bearing on the attainment of enlightenment.
The Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch, which is said to be a record of his teachings, is a highly influential text in the East Asian Buddhist tradition.

Annamalai Swami (1906–1995) was a direct disciple of Sri Ramana Maharshi who realized the Self after practicing Self-enquiry for decades. This experience gave him first-hand knowledge of how to perform Self-enquiry successfully, making his advice especially valuable to seekers. His teachings are delivered in plain, direct language.

Yoga nidra, or yogic sleep as it is commonly known, is an immensely powerful meditation technique, and one of the easiest yoga practices to develop and maintain. While the practitioner rests comfortably in savasana (corpse pose), this systematic meditation takes you through a guided body relaxation leaving you with a sense of wholeness.
