(as explained by a former appliance repair tech) RenDuH 2024-09-15 | In the 6 years I worked in the field as an appliance repair tech, detergent buildup was the MOST COMMON reason for washing machines not working correctly. Even with customers who only overused detergent on very rare occasions, if they didn't maintain their washing machine by doing the bare minimum to clean it, a detergent buildup would usually form after a few years. Always take at least a quick read through your manual before using a new appliance--they're all available online now even if you aren't given a physical copy. Knowing the very basic maintenance required of your machine will help you have the best experience with using it.
