After Parkland, a number started floating around in relation to Florida Senator Marco Rubio: $1.05. This is supposedly the amount of money a student’s life is worth to the senator since he has purportedly accepted over $3,000,000 from the NRA and when you divide that by the number of students in the state, $1.05 is what you get. Rubio has been bought, so the story goes, and for a pretty cheap price.
However compelling this trope appears on the surface, it just simply isn’t true. It turns out that, even assuming the worst, politicians aren’t bought and paid for as people expect. If only for the fact that it’s cheaper not to.
Hope you enjoy this week’s video!

Every ten years, the US census is tasked with collecting data on all the residents of the nation. This is so congressional districts can be apportioned to each state and that new congressional district boundaries can be created. This process engenders one of the thorniest political issues in modern US politics: Gerrymandering. But gerrymandering is only possible because we shift the map boundaries every 10 years. Why do we do this? Where did this practice start?
The answer (as usual) is complicated. But it turns out that it is both a product of legal requirements as well as a legacy of some folks in the 1840s really trying their hardest to maintain their slipping grip on political prominence and power.

Donald Trump’s tenure included a lot of firsts--most of which were controversial. But one of his final “firsts” will undoubtedly flavor his legacy in the years to come. Shortly after the January 6th assault on the US Capitol, Trump was the first President to be impeached twice. Absent an insanely fast snap impeachment and trial, it was almost guaranteed that the latter would happen after he had left office. Many people are wondering whether or not this makes the question moot--or even if the trial is constitutional at all.
Today, we’re going to look at the historical precedent to see whether or not former officials can be impeached---and why congress may want to do so even if Trump is already out of office.

While the vast majority of votes cast in the 2020 US election happened on November 3rd, that’s not actually the date the President is elected. The popular vote serves only to inform state-level electors (that is, members of the Electoral College) how to vote. But if you look around the world, you’ll see that no other nation has a system quite like this. So why does the US? Why does the United States even have an Electoral College?
The answer, it turns out, is less about grand deliberate design and more about navigating competing considerations at play in the 1780s.
Hope you enjoy! I certainly learned a lot making it!!

In December of 2019, President Trump was impeached by a majority in the House. In February of 2020, the President was acquitted by a thin majority in the Senate (still far away from the needed 2/3rds to convict). Although there were certainly some surprises, it’s hard to say that there was any doubt in the outcome. Part of this came when Republicans in the Senate explicitly promised to coordinate with the White House and when many announced that they had determined his innocence regardless of what was going to come out. Given their majority status in the chamber, many felt that the process was unfair and rigged from the get.
This isn’t the process the founders thought of. It’s fair to ask whether or not they made a bad system for removing a President.
And after a lot of thought, I don’t think they did. At least, not initially. I wonder if, instead, we broke impeachment. And whether or not breaking it more might help.

In December of 2019, President Trump signed a bill into law that made the legal age to purchase tobacco products 21 in the United States. Congress passed a bill, the President signed it into law--seems pretty straightforward. But the federal government had to use a different approach for making alcohol 21; it didn’t have the authority to unilaterally raise the legal age of access. It instead had to use a carrot and stick method so that the states would enact it themselves. Where did the federal government get the authority to do this with smoking?
It turns out, law and politics are messy and complicated things.

Alabama recently passed the most restrictive anti-abortion law in the country. Abortion is illegal at every point of the pregnancy except when the mother’s life in jeopardy or there is a fatal issue with the fetus. Pregnancies caused by rape and/or incest are not exempt. (There’s a lazy Alabama joke to be made there and I’m really proud that I didn’t in the video). This generally tends to break away from the public’s broader position on abortion. So why is this law popular and why do people tend to support more restrictive laws versus less restrictive laws and versus supporting abortion more generally?

After months of investigating, Special Council Robert Mueller announced that he had finished his investigation. A few weeks after that, we finally got the “full” report (at least as full as we’re gonna get for quite a while). It’s 480 something pages of very thick, plain prose-- and, consequently, most people haven’t actually read it. They understandably leave it to their favorite political experts to pick out what’s actually important from the mountain of words. However, both the left and the right are viewing this through frames that are already formed; their interpretation was half-decided before Mueller was even finished. So, I decided to give you guys as factual and unbiased a report of what’s inside the dang thing as I could. First I talk about what the report says about Russian interference in the 2016, allegations of collusion, and allegations of obstruction of justice. Then I go ahead and give you guys my opinion. Facts first, opinions after. So although I definitely have my biases, I hope that it’ll give you guys an opportunity to decide for yourselves before purchasing into whatever ideological frame best fits what you normally see.

(Presumably, they are just perfect for their virtual lives). As a result, they gravitate towards a pretty simple policy proposal: Term limits. Everyone gets a certain amount of time and then kick the jerks out. New faces and new ideas, what could possibly go wrong.
A lot, actually. Turns out that term limits are a terrible idea. And this video’s all about why.
P.S. This video was a collaboration with Mr. Beat. If you haven’t checked him out yet, you absolutely should. His video on the topic is funny and informative-- as is the rest of his stuff! Go check him out!!

In 2012, a report by Fairleigh Dickinson University claimed that those who watched Fox News knew less about domestic issues than those who didn’t even watch the news at all. This has subsequently been used to argue that Fox is not only right of center but bad for the country. But is it true? There are some issues in the original report that invites additional rigour. And when that rigour is applied we get an answer that isn’t quite “yes” or “no” but a whopping “it depends.”

President Trump has had numerous controversies while in office. Indeed, there have been far, FAR more serious, high-profile issues coming from this administration than any other in modern American history. But, despite all that, the President is polling at about 40%. Not only that, his polling is remarkably STABLE at 40%. Why? How?! How is it that he’s able to keep such stable figures despite all of the issues plaguing his tenure? It’s not black magic. Just polarization. Less-than-three Peter

Like, there’s inflation of over 1.3 million percent. How can you even imagine it? Short answer: You can’t. Our brains just weren’t wired to be able to do it. So Harvard economist Ricardo Haussman got creative. He and his team came up with a few measures that show, intuitively, just how bad the situation has gotten.

It’s that time of year! The time where YouTubers are obligated to make videos about the holiday season so as to serve the faceless algorithmic master. Truly, a time of good tidings and goodwill towards mankind. But! Have you ever wondered why we celebrate Christmas on December 25th? Like, what is it about that day specifically that made early church leaders decide to recognize it as worth observing? It’s just as much a political story as it is a theological one-- perhaps even more so the former than the latter. It’s a story about choice and ideological contestation. Best learned, I feel, with a glass of milk and cookies and a yuletide fire.
Merry Christmas

In mid November, about 200,000 French people took to the street to voice their disdain for a new carbon tax set to take effect and raise the average price of gasoline by 30 cents. Protestors wore a bright yellow vest, mandated by law to be in French vehicles, as a sign of solidarity. But it’s been over a month and they’re still ongoing. Even though Macron made numerous concessions (including suspending the tax), the yellow-vest protests rage on. It turns out that the gas tax was just the tip of the iceberg-- merely the spark that ignited a deep resentment for Macron stewing among the French working class.
It took all that I could to not make a Macron-i and Cheese joke in this video. You’re welcome.

I recently ran my third marathon-- but while my results were objectively pretty decent (and I should be happy just to finish the dang thing), I found myself pretty disappointed in the results. And it reminded me of some really interesting research showing that Olympians who win bronze seem happier than those who earn silver. While this seems counter-intuitive, it’s all about the brain. Specifically the counterfactual, “what-if” scenarios it comes up with that we use to compare what was with what could have been.

The 116th congress will have at least 125 women serving in it, the most than at any other time in US history. However, while this has been a year for female candidates, women still only comprise only 25% of the chamber despite being 50% of the population. Research shows that women are less likely to be recruited for political office. This video discusses a paper that tries to answer why. (Or at least get a partial answer).
This video is a bit different. I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed and burnt out but I still wanted to talk about something interesting. I hate to give away the ending in the preview, but I felt I’d dispel any doubt before going into the description of the video.
It’s been over a week since the midterms and the Florida senate race is still too close to call. Current Florida Governor Rick Scott has levied claims of voter fraud as his lead tightened due to additional ballots in the state’s democratic strongholds. Although these are not being entertained by the FDLE, OTHERS are claiming that the state was stolen due to a ballot design issue in Broward county. However, the math isn’t on their side either.
Florida is why we can’t have nice things around election time, I swear.

The 2018 midterms are just a few days away! (If you haven’t yet, and you’re able to, VOTE). By now you’ve probably heard about this thing called “the blue wave” where Democrats are expected to retake control over Congress. Some people think that they’ll take over both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Those people may be a tad optimistic. While there’s a great deal of evidence supporting that the Democrats will take control of the house, there’s about as much that the Republicans will take control of the senate?

If you guys check out the news, you’ll probably see stories talking regarding some new poll that was just released. They’ll look at the numbers, and talk about they’re basically saying that Republicans/Democrats are dumb/evil. And they’ll often get very specific with those percentages, 33% believe this, 72.5% believe this other thing, 66.6% think Iron Maiden’s pretty rad, etc. But they’ll hardly ever mention the their margin of error. Which is actually very bad; it’s one of the most important elements of the entire poll. A common misconception is that polls give you estimated points of the population’s mean. They don’t. So many pundits interpret the numbers incorrectly-- and the reason is the margin of error.
But what is the Margin of Error? What does it mean to have a 95% confidence interval or 95% certainty attached to a poll? Fortunately for y’all, I’m a massive survey nerd, so we’re going to break it down and demistify the logic and maths of the Margin of Error.

For those who haven’t seen (and you should), The Good Place is a fantastically funny and well-written show about moral philosophy, what happens when we die, and how frozen yogurt is deliciously mediocre. As the show evolves, Michael, the show’s original source of narrative conflict, makes a stunning change of heart. Many have chalked this up to be the result of lessons delivered by the show’s resident moral philosopher Chidi-- but I think that the reason has less to do with philosophy and more to do with psychology. Specifically, the psychology of propinquity.
It can also explain why Jason and Tahani have been hookng up which is somehow weirder than Jason marrying Janet, IMHO.

I am personally OBSESSED with pumpkin spice. I would say I get excited as the leaves change color and fall to the ground but I live in Florida-- a state featuring 90 degree days in February and otherwise totally unfamiliar with the notion of “seasons.” But I do get excited as the calendar changes from August to September because then it becomes acceptable for me to publicly obsess over all things pumpkin.
The prevailing stereotype on the Internet, though, is that Pumpkin spice is a Basic White people thing. This got me wondering: Is it? Like, empirically? So I crunched some numbers and, spoiler alert, the answer appears to be “yes.” But there are some caveats.
Come for the pumpkiny clickbait, stay for the serious lesson in research design.

It’s called many things: Writer’s block, creative blocks, the midnight disease-- regardless of what you call it, it sucks.
While there are many videos on how to be creative, there aren’t as many about how to snap out of the creative funk. So, in this video, we’re going over the science of writer’s block and, in the process, hopefully coming up with a few suggestions to come out of it.
This video is, paradoxically, inspired by writer’s block. Because only my brain says “hey, you know that thing causing you massive anxiety?! Why don’t you focus on it more and make a video!”

The term “impeachment” often comes up when Presidents make unpopular actions.Virtually every President from Nixon through Trump had substantial portions of the population calling for them to be impeached and removed from office. (Fun fact: none of them have-- even Nixon and Clinton). But it’s not only Presidents who can be impeached. In fact, compared to other civil servants, Presidents are some of the LEAST likely to be impeached. Who else can be impeached? How does the process actually work? In June of 2017, President Trump directed the Department of Defense to begin the process of establishing a Space Force: A sixth branch of the US Armed Forces. The reception to the announcement is, unsurprisingly, polarized with a majority of Republicans in support and a majority of Democrats in opposition. (I’ll be frank; as a space geek, my first impression was pretty positive too). Still, this would not be the first time that a president has done something polarized. But how do you go about actually MAKING a Space Force? What would need to be done in order for us to actually have that promised 6th branch by 2020.
Although there’s less support for it among the top brass then when the Air Force was established in 1947, I’d still probably enlist if it ended up being a thing-- I’ll just be totally honest.
