Between the Northern Lights, the comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS and the full Hunter’s Moon, October has already proved to be an exciting month for skygazers in the UK.
And, over the weekend and into Monday, people will have the chance to see the Orinoids — one of two annual meteor showers from Halley's comet.
The Orionids fill the night sky each year from late September to mid-November. In 2024, they are expected to peak before dawn on Sunday and Monday (20 and 21 October).

Andrew Talbot, 54, from Leigh, who worked in GMP's serious crime division, stole just under four kilos of cocaine from the GMP property store, before then supplying it between February 2018 and January 2020.
Talbot, a cocaine-addicted former army officer, conspired with a convicted drug dealer, Keith Bretherton, and used his position as a police officer to give him confidential force information to help him to recover a drug debt worth more than £20,000.
He also searched the force's confidential computer systems for known or suspected drug dealers to help him shift the drugs he stole and provide information to a friend who was under investigation for assault.
Now Andrew Talbot, 54, from Leigh, was sentenced to 19 years in prison for his crimes. Bretherton, 50, also of Leigh, was jailed for eight-and-half years.
Detective Chief Inspector Jennifer Adams, from GMP's Anti-Corruption Unit, spoke outside Liverpool Crown Court following the sentencing.

The six-day trip to Canberra and Sydney will be Charles’ first to Australia as its head of state, and comes as he continues to receive treatment for cancer.
Australia’s Governor-General Sam Mostyn and her husband Simeon Beckett greeted the royal couple alongside Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, his fiancee Jodie Haydon and other dignitaries.
Just a few hours before the plane landed, the royal couple posted a video montage of previous royal tours of Australia alongside words of praise for the Commonwealth country.
The couple said: “Ahead of our first visit to Australia as King and Queen, we are really looking forward to returning to this beautiful country to celebrate the extraordinarily rich cultures and communities that make it so special. See you there!
“Charles R & Camilla R.”
As drops of rain fell at Sydney airport, Charles and Camilla walked down the steps of an Australian Royal Air Force plane that carried the royal party as the King is Australia’s head of state.
Charles has visited Australia more than 15 times since the 1960s and has enjoyed some memorable trips, from studying at a remote outpost of a grammar school when a 17-year-old to being kissed by a bikini-clad model as he emerged from the sea.
The King and Queen will later travel to Samoa for a three-day state visit and meet world leaders taking part in a Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, which Charles will formally open.
Ms Mostyn, the King’s representative in Australia, is a prominent businesswoman whose career has spanned executive roles in the worlds sport, the arts and gender equality alongside business, and she introduced Charles to a line of dignitaries.
Among them were the Governor of New South Wales, Margaret Beazley, and New South Wales’ Premier Chris Minns.
The King had walked down the plane’s steps holding an umbrella as his wife sheltered under her own after the airport had been deluged, just 30 minutes before their arrival.

The 24-year-old, who doesn’t want to be named, had withdrawn £3,000 from the Nationwide building society, in Warrington.
He then walked a few hundred yards to the branch of Natwest in the town to pay the cash in.
He was distracted by a woman in a "hysterical" state - before a man in a flat cap swiped the cash when his back was turned.
The CCTV featured on a BBC Crimewatch appeal. The incident happened on June 19, 2024.
Cheshire Police said it was a 'well-planned' operation carried out with 'military precision."

Campaigners on both sides of the controversial assisted dying debate gathered outside Parliament on Wednesday ahead of the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill being brought before MPs by Labour’s Kim Leadbeater.
High-profile voices for change include Dame Esther Rantzen, while the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby and actor and disability campaigner Liz Carr have voiced their opposition.
Mr Welby has warned that introducing any form of legislation for assisted dying could lead to a “slippery slope” which widens the eligibility criteria, while Silent Witness star Carr said the disabled could be especially vulnerable.
Confirmation of the Bill’s title led campaigners who feel the proposed law should cover those who might not be terminally ill but who are facing unbearable suffering to brand it a “bittersweet moment”.
The Bill’s long title states that it would “allow adults who are terminally ill, subject to safeguards and protections, to request and be provided with assistance to end their own life”.
Expected to be more commonly referred to as Ms Leadbeater’s Bill for choice at the end of life for the terminally ill, it will be debated and likely voted on on November 29.
The precise detail of the proposed legislation – setting out the circumstances which could lead someone to be eligible – is unlikely to be published until closer to that debate.

Emergency services were called to the incident in Violet Close, in the Benwell and Elswick area of the city, shortly before 1am on Wednesday.
A spokesman for North East Ambulance Service said four people were treated at the scene and then taken to hospital.
Drone pictures from above the street showed at least one house appeared to have been completely destroyed, with roofs collapsed and firefighters working among the rubble.
Piles of debris could be seen on the street outside.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “Shortly before 12.45am today (Wednesday), police were contacted by Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, who are dealing with a fire at an address in the Violet Close area of Newcastle.
“Emergency services remain in attendance at the scene.
“Road closures are in place on Buddle Road and the surrounding area, and motorists and residents are advised to avoid the area and to keep doors and windows closed if they see and smell smoke.”
A spokesman for Northern Gas Networks said it has engineers on site and is “supporting the emergency services during this ongoing incident”.

A female anoa, named Kasimbar, was delivered by her mother Darcy following a 10-month pregnancy and the birth was recorded on hidden cameras located in their den.
The video is believed to be the first recorded footage of an anoa birth, according to the conservation zoo.
Moments after Darcy gave birth, the video shows her calf stumbling as she took her first steps and explored the world outside her den for the first time.
Callum Garner, a keeper at Chester Zoo, said he feels “privileged” to share the rare footage with the public and hopes the video can help conservationists gain better knowledge about the animal.
“Very few people, if any, will have ever seen an anoa give birth,” he said.
“Anoa are incredibly shy and elusive animals and so to be able to witness a calf being born and then see those magical first moments between mum and baby is very special indeed. We’re privileged to be able to share this remarkable footage with the world.
“Some of the information we’ve gleaned from the footage may be useful in the conservation breeding of this endangered species in the future.”
He added that Darcy and newborn Kasimbar are recovering well as they bond together in their den and said the calf has “gained confidence and is bursting with energy”.
The anoa is native to the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia and listed by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as an endangered animal with only an estimated 2,500 left in the wild.
Anoa are known locally as the “demons of the forest” and are often persecuted by farmers because they are believed to use their horns to attack livestock in forests at night, according to zoo conservationists who feel the rare species is “largely misunderstood”.
Mr Garner said the anoa are sometimes hunted for their meat which could contribute to their declining numbers.
However, Chester Zoo has joined 50 international organisations as part of a global project called Action Indonesia which aims to protect Indonesia’s most threatened animals including anoa, banteng, also a rare bovine species, babirusa, a rare swine breed, and the Sumatran tiger.
“Anoa are in real trouble in the wild, owing to them being largely misunderstood and having developed a reputation among local people in Sulawesi that leads them to being persecuted and targeted by farmers,” Mr Garner explained.
“Not only that, but their habitat is ever shrinking and they are hunted for their meat. That’s why we’re working with the Indonesian government and the wider conservation community to protect precious habitats in South East Asia, so that species like the anoa can go on to thrive.”
The project hopes to introduce education programmes while exploring ways of preserving the local habitat and start anti-poaching initiatives to help reduce the decline of anoa.

The Home Secretary told MPs: “It is a Bill which has the wholehearted support of both the Prime Minister (Sir Keir Starmer) and the leader of the Opposition (Rishi Sunak), and I hope the whole House.”
'Martyn's Law' calls for mandatory anti-terror training for staff and tighter event security at venues, and intends to help protect the public from potential attacks. Ms Murray has spent the last six years tirelessly campaigning for the legislation.

Nasa’s Europa Clipper took off on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Cape Canaveral in Florida at 5.06pm on Monday, after launch was delayed from last week because of hurricane Milton.
It will now travel 1.8 billion miles (2.9 billion kilometres), finally arriving at the biggest planet in the solar system in April 2030.
What it finds could change what scientists believe about life in the solar system.
The mission aims to confirm that a vast ocean exists beneath Europa’s icy surface, making it a promising place to study habitability for life beyond Earth.
The spacecraft will orbit Jupiter, and carry out 49 close flybys of Europa – one of its 95 moons.
Some evidence suggests that the ingredients for life may exist on the moon right now.
On each orbit, the spacecraft will spend less than a day in the dangerous radiation zone near Europa before zipping back out.
Then some two to three weeks later, it will repeat the process.
During the flybys, the spacecraft will fly at altitudes as low as 16 miles (25 kilometres) above the surface, and in order to scan the entire moon it will soar over a different location during each flyby.

Mr Khan acknowledged there was no short-term hope for rejoining the single market, which would give greater trade access to the bloc but would also come with the return of freedom of movement.
He said, however, that barriers to trade with the UK’s closest neighbours should come down and the single market was “something we shouldn’t be scared to talk about”.
Mr Khan was slapped down by Chancellor Rachel Reeves, who said Labour should not rip up its election manifesto’s commitments on the EU now that it is in office.
The Prime Minister has made resetting relations with the European Union a priority, although it is not clear how much can be achieved within his red lines, which include ruling out a return to the single market or customs union.
He also said he has no plans to sign up to a youth mobility scheme which has been proposed by Brussels.
But Mr Khan backed the idea of a scheme for young Britons to live and work in the EU, and vice versa.
Speaking at the Government’s international investment summit, he told the PA news agency: “I’m quite clear that all successful countries do the most trade with their nearest neighbours, that’s one of the signs of success.
“We’ve got on our doorstep, not just friends and colleagues and family indeed, we’ve got a market of more than 500 million people.
“The good news is the Prime Minister spent a lot of the last three months visiting friends in Europe, whether it’s the president of France, the prime minister of Italy, the chancellor of Germany or the European Union, indeed, in Brussels.
“The current Brexit deal we have comes up before review next year. I’m hoping, unlike last time, there will be closer alignment, rather than divergence.
“We should be looking at a whole host of issues and talking about them – whether it’s a youth mobility scheme, whether it’s seeing what we can do to bring people closer together.
“I think the reality is, in the short term, we probably aren’t going to get back as members of the single market. But it’s something we shouldn’t be scared to talk about.”

Last week it emerged that Sadiq Khan and Home Secretary Yvette Cooper were involved in talks around the security for Swift’s sell-out summer shows at Wembley, after The Sun reported that the Shake It Off star was given a motorbike convoy to protect her on the way to the stadium despite initial police reservations.
Speaking on Monday, Mr Khan said police have “operational independence” but the Government speaks “regularly” with the Met about security issues.
Mr Khan said: “What I’d say to people who aren’t aware is that our police have operational independence, whether it’s policing a protest, whether it’s policing a concert, a sporting event, New Year’s Eve fireworks.
“The Government – the Home Secretary is included in that – myself as the mayor, speak regularly with the Met Police Service about a whole host of security issues and, of course, we’re going to raise the issue of security around world-breaking concerts.”
Mr Khan said that in the wake of the terror threat made against her gigs in Vienna, and the Southport incident, that “we’ve got to make sure” those attending the concerts, as well as artists, are safe.
He added: “And so I’m sure the commissioner took on board a whole host of views before he himself, as the commissioner, himself decided what was right and proper to do, and that operational independence falls with the commissioner.”
A Met Police spokesperson said: “The Met is operationally independent.
“Our decision-making is based on a thorough assessment of threat, risk and harm and the circumstances of each case.
“It is our longstanding position that we don’t comment on the specific details of protective security arrangements.”
Over the weekend The Sunday Times reported that Attorney General Lord Hermer was also involved in the discussions about the blue-light escort, a type of protection usually reserved for senior royalty and politicians.
The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said on Monday that “operational decisions are for the Met independently of the Government.”
He said: “You’d expect Government, the police, the Mayor of London to be involved in planning significant events in the capital to ensure the public is kept safe.”
He added: “All operational decisions are made by the Metropolitan Police independently of Government.”
Senior Labour politicians including Sir Keir Starmer, Mr Khan and Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy were given free tickets to Eras Tour shows.
Last week the Culture Secretary insisted there was no link between the hospitality offered and the police protection for Ms Swift.
“I utterly reject that there’s been any kind of wrongdoing or undue influence in this case,” she told Sky News.

Sir Keir Starmer said boosting economic growth would help tackle the rise of populism by repairing public services and putting cash in people’s pockets as he stepped up efforts to woo global investors.
The Prime Minister rolled out the red carpet for chief executives, promising to rip up regulation to get projects off the ground if they put funding into the UK.
He took part in an event with the former Google CEO, Eric Schmidt, where they discussed red tape in the UK and how it affects investment.
Mr Schmidt said: “I was shocked when Labour became strongly in favour of growth,” he said.
He warned the Prime Minister that problems with the planning regime and regulation were “killing you”.
“The cost of capital and the delay is killing you, and furthermore you’re not going to achieve your 2030 energy goal, which is laudable, without fixing this,” he said.
“You have a tactical leadership problem to achieve this and I think you can pull it off, but you have to figure out a way to get control.”
The Prime Minister replied: “I think this is a really big challenge, it has to be a cross-Government priority, not just within the Treasury team.”

The Prime Minister rolled out the red carpet for chief executives, promising to rip up regulation to get projects off the ground if they put funding into the UK.
Sir Keir said it is “time to upgrade the regulatory regime” as he pledged to “rip up” bureaucracy holding back investment.
He said the Government will “make sure that every regulator” in the country takes growth “as seriously” as businesses.
The build-up to the summit was overshadowed by a £1 billion investment by P&O Ferries owner DP World being put in jeopardy following Transport Secretary Louise Haigh’s suggestion consumers should boycott the ferry company following the fire-and-rehire scandal.
But on Monday the firm confirmed its plan to expand the London Gateway container port.
Other investments announced on Monday included £1.1 billion by Manchester Airports Group to expand Stansted.
Sir Keir said it was “a great moment to back Britain”.

The coin knocked the “highly collectable” 2009 Kew Gardens 50p off the top spot for the first time in 15 years, the official maker of British coins said.
Just 200,000 of the Atlantic Salmon 50ps have been released to UK banks and post offices, 10,000 less than the 2009 Kew Gardens coin.
It came as the Royal Mint published its 2023 mintage figures for UK coins in circulation.
Last year marked the final chapter of Charles’ transition onto UK coins, with coins commemorating the coronation and new designs across all denominations from the 1p to £2.
Each design highlights Charles’ “passion for conservation and the natural world”, featuring wildlife such as the hazel dormouse and bees, the Royal Mint said.

Arriving just two weeks after the misery wrought by Hurricane Helene, the system knocked out power to more than 3 million customers, flooded barrier islands, tore the roof off a baseball stadium and toppled a construction crane.
A Coast Guard helicopter crew rescued a man who was left clinging to an ice chest in the Gulf of Mexico after his fishing boat was stranded in waters roiled by Hurricane Milton.
He was approximately 30 miles off Longboat Key, Florida, when he was rescued.
The agency estimated the man had survived winds of 75 to 90mph (121 to 145kph) and waves up to 25 feet (7.6 metres) high during his night on the water.
“This man survived in a nightmare scenario for even the most experienced mariner,” Coast Guard Lieutenant Commander Dana Grady said.
Despite the destruction, many people expressed relief that Milton was not worse. The hurricane spared Tampa a direct hit, and the lethal storm surge that scientists feared never materialised.
The storm tracked to the south in the final hours and made landfall late on Wednesday as a Category 3 hurricane in Siesta Key, about 70 miles (112 kilometres) south of Tampa.

Arriving just two weeks after the misery wrought by Hurricane Helene, the system knocked out power to more than 3 million customers, flooded barrier islands, tore the roof off a baseball stadium and toppled a construction crane.
Among the most dramatic rescues, Hillsborough County officers found a 14-year-old boy floating on a piece of fence and pulled him onto a boat.
Damage was widespread, and water levels may continue to rise for days, but Governor Ron DeSantis said it was not “the worst-case scenario”.
“You face two hurricanes in a couple of weeks — not easy to go through — but I’ve seen a lot of resilience throughout this state,” he told a briefing in Sarasota. He said he was “very confident that this area is going to bounce back very, very quickly”.
Five people were killed in tornadoes in the Spanish Lakes Country Club near Fort Pierce, on Florida’s Atlantic Coast, where homes were destroyed, authorities said. Police also found a woman dead under a fallen tree branch in Tampa.
In Volusia County, authorities said two people, a 79-year-old woman in Ormond Beach and a 54-year-old woman in Port Orange, were also killed when trees fell on homes.
At least 340 people and 49 pets have been rescued in ongoing efforts, Mr DeSantis said on Thursday afternoon.

This was the view from Werneth Low, looking over Manchester city centre and beyond. People in Greater Manchester and all over the UK were treated to a stunning display of spectacular pinks, purples, blues and greens.
They filled the skies on Thursday evening and into the early hours of Friday - and could also be seen as far south as Sussex and as far north as Scotland thanks to clear skies.
They could also be visible again on Friday evening. For the full details, and more pictures from around Greater Manchester, click the link below 🔗

Kate and William spent 90 minutes chatting privately with the group after making an unannounced visit to Southport – their first joint official outing since the princess’ cancer treatment ended in the summer.
At an undisclosed location, the couple privately met the families of Bebe King, six, Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, and Alice Dasilva Aguiar, nine – all fatally stabbed during a Taylor Swift-themed dance class on July 29 in Southport, and the children’s dance teacher.
After spending 30 minutes with each of the families, they walked the short distance to Southport Community Centre where they joined emergency responders involved in the incident to hear about their experiences, and meet health practitioners supporting the “blue light” community in the town.
Kate and William sat next to each other on a bench in the centre’s gardens for an emotional conversation with the emergency workers.
Referencing their earlier meeting with the families, Kate said: “I can’t underestimate how grateful they all are for the support you provided on the day.
“On behalf of them, thank you.”
William told the responders: “You’re all heroes. Please make sure you look after yourselves, please take your time, don’t rush back to work.”
Away from the cameras, Kate gave some of the fire, ambulance, police and air ambulance workers invited a hug, after they struggled to express feelings.
It is understood the engagement was planned as a solo visit for William, but Kate decided to join her husband in order to show her support, empathy and compassion for the local community.
The princess has been slowly returning to a light programme of public duties following her announcement in a video four weeks ago that her course of chemotherapy had ended and her focus would be “doing what I can to stay cancer free”.

The storm caused at least four deaths and compounded the misery wrought by Helene while sparing Tampa a direct hit.
It tracked to the south in the final hours and made landfall on Wednesday night in Siesta Key near Sarasota, about 70 miles (112 kilometres) south of Tampa.
The situation in the Tampa area was still a major emergency as St Petersburg recorded over 16 inches (41 centimetres) of rain, prompting the National Weather Service to warn of flash flooding there as well as other parts of western and central Florida.
Tropicana Field, the home of the Tampa Bay Rays baseball team in St Petersburg, appeared badly damaged.
The fabric that serves as the domed stadium’s roof was ripped to shreds by the fierce winds.
It was not immediately clear if there was damage inside. Multiple cranes were also toppled in the storm, the weather service said.
St Petersburg residents also could no longer get water from their household taps because a water main break led the city to shut down service.
The storm knocked out power across a large section of Florida, with more than three million homes and businesses without power as of early Thursday, according to poweroutage.us, which tracks utility reports.
Before Milton even made landfall, tornadoes were touching down across the state. The Spanish Lakes Country Club near Fort Pierce, on Florida’s Atlantic Coast, was hit particularly hard.
Homes were destroyed and four people were killed in tornadoes there, the St Lucie County Sheriff’s Office said.
Florida governor Ron DeSantis said later on Thursday that Milton was a significant storm but not “the worst case scenario”.
He told reporters that the worst storm surge appeared to be in Sarasota County, where it was eight to 10 feet (2.5 to three metres) — less than in the worst place during Helene.
“We will better understand the extent of the damage as the day progresses,” he said. “The storm was significant but thankfully, this was not the worst case scenario.”
Water levels in many Florida rivers are forecast to continue rising, he said.

Biden hit out while delivering remarks at the White House as Hurricane Milton barrelled towards the Florida coast. He was speaking about the impact the hurricane was set to have on the communities that live in its path - and how the federal government was set up to help in the aftermath.
The President told reporters and viewers about an 'onslaught of lies' about how the government was handling the damange from Hurricane Helene, which hit the southeastern United States a few weeks ago.
He also took aim at Republican congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Green of Georgia, who he said had claimed the federal government could 'control the weather.'
He said: "Quite frankly, these lies are un-American." and added: “Former President Trump has led this onslaught of lies.”
Asked why he thought Republicans were saying this, Biden told reporters: "It’s un-American. It’s not who the hell we are.”

Before Milton even made landfall, tornadoes were touching down across the state. The Spanish Lakes Country Club near Fort Pierce, on Florida’s Atlantic Coast, was hit particularly hard, with homes destroyed and some residents killed.
“We have lost some life,” St Lucie County Sheriff Keith Pearson told WPBF News, though he would not say how many people were killed.
About 125 homes were destroyed before the hurricane came ashore, many of them mobile homes in communities for senior citizens, said Kevin Guthrie, the director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management.
About 90 minutes after making landfall, Milton was downgraded to a Category 2 storm. By early Thursday, the hurricane was a Category 1 storm with maximum sustained winds of about 85 mph (135 kph) as it churned about 35 miles (55 kilometres) south of Orlando.
Heavy rains were also likely to cause flooding inland along rivers and lakes as Milton traverses the Florida Peninsula as a hurricane, eventually to emerge in the Atlantic Ocean on Thursday.
It is expected to impact the heavily populated Orlando area.

Some residents have insisted they will stay after millions were ordered to evacuate and officials warned that stragglers would face grim odds of surviving.
The Tampa Bay area, home to more than 3.3 million people, faced the possibility of widespread destruction after avoiding direct hits from major hurricanes for more than a century.
Milton has dropped to a Category 4 hurricane, but will remain a major hurricane when it makes landfall late on Wednesday or early on Thursday, the National Hurricane Centre said.
Milton was centred early on Wednesday about 360 miles south-west of Tampa with maximum sustained winds of 160mph, the National Hurricane Centre reported.
Forecasters predicted the storm will retain hurricane strength as it crosses central Florida on Thursday on a path east towards the Atlantic Ocean.
The hurricane’s precise track remains uncertain, as forecasters on Tuesday evening nudged its projected path slightly south of Tampa.
Thousands of fleeing cars clogged Florida’s major roads ahead of the storm, but time for evacuations is running out on Wednesday.
Tampa Mayor Jane Castor noted that up to 15ft of storm surge forecast for her city would be deep enough to swallow an entire house.

Cameras on the International space station captured this new footage of Milton as it headed for the area around Tampa, Florida in the early morning hours of Wednesday, October 10.
The Tampa Bay area, home to more than 3.3 million people, faced the possibility of widespread destruction after avoiding direct hits from major hurricanes for more than a century.
The US National Hurricane Centre predicted Milton, a monstrous Category 5 hurricane during much of its approach, would likely weaken but remain a major hurricane when it makes landfall late on Wednesday.
Some residents have insisted they will stay after millions were ordered to evacuate and officials warned that stragglers would face grim odds of surviving.
Milton was centred early on Wednesday about 360 miles south-west of Tampa with maximum sustained winds of 160mph, the National Hurricane Centre reported.

Thousands of fleeing cars clogged Florida’s major roads ahead of the storm, but time for evacuations is running out on Wednesday.
Flights between Manchester Airport and Florida were cancelled as the region braces for the impact.
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said there was an increasing risk of a life-threatening storm surge on the west coast, and heavy rainfall and high winds are expected to impact large parts of Florida.
Virgin Atlantic said it had cancelled numerous flights because of 'adverse weather conditions expected to be caused by Hurricane Milton', with a state of emergency declared in Florida.
The airline cancelled two flights on Tuesday between Heathrow and Tampa, and nine on Wednesday, including ones between Manchester and Orlando. A further 10 flights have been called off on Thursday, involving Heathrow, Manchester, Orlando and Tampa.
Two flights from Edinburgh to Orlando have been delayed by 23 hours, one on Wednesday and one on Thursday.
