The dresses for theses dolls are inspired by the costumes in Anne of Green Gables and Little House on the Prairie. How long has this been in the works? Two weeks since I started sewing, six years since I bought the fabric, and over two decades since I fell in love with these characters! Each dress should fit an 18-inch doll, and they were specifically made to fit American Girl Dolls. Making these doll dresses was a lot of fun, and it makes me so happy to know I'm able to share this project with you!

That's the question I asked myself when my husband and I decided to go to the New Jersey Renaissance Faire. I decided, fairly last minute, to upgrade my Danielle Work Dress costume. I love the look of the Italian Renaissance gowns, but I didn't have the time or resources to make a new costume from scratch. The only Italian Renaissance costume I have is a work dress based on the one worn by Danielle in Ever After: A Cinderella Story. I like the costume, but I wanted something a bit fancier. I was able to come up with a plan to upgrade my Danielle costume in the easiest and quickest way I could. Now, I just had to make it...in one day...

This video was a LONG time coming! My patron Stacey gifted me Prior Attire's book the Victorian Dressmaker quite a while back. I had my viewers vote on which gown I should try to recreate at half-scale. They chose this beautiful ballgown and, as you'll hear in the video, that particular gown was very important to me. Well, a baby, a career change, commissions, collaborations, and multiple tax seasons later, I'm finally able to share how I recreated this 1884 Victorian Ballgown!
I worked on my voiceover script as I went along so I kept that intact. This video spans two years. The entire project spanned three years. I think it's important to show that these projects don't always get done quickly. Some dresses take 24 hours. Some dresses take three years. Sometimes, the dress is based on the same inspiration. Real life gets in the way, and that's okay. It happens. The important thing is that we have fun and are kind to ourselves.
Thank you all for your patience!

This felt like the perfect time to make an Ever After costume! Most 90s babies (and 80s babies) have a strong attachment to the Ever After movie (AKA Ever After: A Cinderella Story) with many costumers referring to it as a gateway into an interest in historical costuming. (Which makes sense after all. The costumes are stunning and were designed by Jenny Beavan who is one of my favorite costume designers!)
Anyway! The trouble was what dress do I make? Given that I had a limited budget that wouldn't ever allow for brocade or velvet, Danielle's Work Dress was the obvious choice. This dress is simpler than the other court-worthy gowns in the movie, but that doesn't mean it isn't lovely in its own right!
Follow along with me as I make Danielle's Work Dress from Ever After!

Are you ready for me to do that more than once? This was filmed during the Summer of 2020. As we all know, it's difficult to get work done when you're living through major historical events and the last two years have been particularly difficult. I thought about cutting out the segments where I miss a deadline (or state one I know I'm going to miss), but I thought it was important to show that it happens and when it does we need to be kind to ourselves.

PO Box: Hat to Hem PO Box 182 Norwood, PA 19074Making a 1910s Dress | Historic Philadelphia: Part 4 | Video Diary 10Hat to Hem2022-02-18 | Note: This video was originally filmed between March 30th and June 3rd, 2020. It's very weird editing a video that is nearly two years old. This video predates my camera so it was filmed on my phone. I clearly forgot to plug in the microphone more than once. It was fun to see what a learning curve I was going through when it came to making videos and see how my filming and editing styles have developed over time.
The commission is almost over! In this video, I'm finishing the 1910s blouse, skirt, and hat as well as a sash. The design does change a few times, but I think that's one of the exciting things about sewing; it's can be an ever-changing process. Sometimes you might have an idea pretty solidly in your mind's eye, but then you realize a different direction is better.

While I was making my Year in Review Video, I thought some viewers might be curious about which video performed best. Then I thought they might be curious about how much I made. Then I thought they might be curious about how much individual videos make. By the time I made a list of things I wanted to mention, I realized it might be best to make a separate video rather than make a forty minute video. So, this is that video. I hope you enjoy it!

While on an American Girl Doll eBay nostalgia scroll, I happened to find the original Pleasant Company doll dress patterns from the 90s for Samantha Parkington! How could I resist? I decided to try to make the cranberry party dress from Samantha's Surprise, with all of the sewing being in a single day.
Though this is family-friendly content, this is first and foremost a sewing video, not a video made specifically for children.

Well, I did it again. I waited too long to start my Halloween costume. Well, our costumes. We're being Mary Poppins and Bert in their Jolly Holiday outfits with our six-month-old son as a baby penguin. Thanks to a commission, I have a very short time to get these costumes done. Yes, costumes, with an -s, because this year I'm also pulling together a costume for my husband so we can have our first Family costume as a family of three. Can I pull this off without losing my mind? Find out!

Unfortunately, with a sewing room halfway through a commission and reorganization PLUS living with a dog and an infant, the areas to photograph a half-scale gown without it looking like a half-scale gown were limited. So...I got creative the day before I was supposed to upload my Lady video!

PO Box: Hat to Hem PO Box 182 Norwood, PA 19074Our Disney Parks Themed Nursery! | Vintage Disney Nursery RevealHat to Hem2021-07-30 | Having gotten engaged in Disney World then celebrating our first anniversary in Disneyland, the Disney Parks are pretty important to us. Taking inspiration from some prints, I designed a colorful Disney Parks-themed nursery.
I had previously painted an It's a Small World-inspired mural on the wall. From geometric curtains to a colorful quilt, we were able to mirror the mural while an area rug matched the colors perfectly. I found wonderful vintage ride posters on Etsy which led to mid-century modern influences on the crib, dresser, and bookcase. I made a mobile with origami birds to reference the Enchanted Tiki Room. Some IKEA wall lights became the Up house floating away. (Right after we got engaged, we were walking along a deserted, rain-soaked Main Street when Married Life came on over the speakers. The timing was magical!) Finally, gifts from our family and friends decorated the rest of the room.
I'm so pleased with how this room turned out. It's so rare that things turn out exactly how you imagine and I'm so glad this was one of those times!
PO Box: Hat to Hem PO Box 182 Norwood, PA 19074I Used the Edwardians Ideal Proportions to Get the Perfect Silhouette | Designing Lady | Half-ScaleHat to Hem2021-07-16 | I used a Table of Proportions from "Turn-of-the-Century Fashion Patterns and Tailoring Techniques" by S. S. Gordon to achieve the Perfect Edwardian Silhouette!
As always, when starting a new era, in order to get that perfect silhouette, you need to start from the skin and work your way out. I decided to see if I could get that Edwardian silhouette while using a base of Victorian Undergarments. It involved making a corset cover, hip padding, and a new petticoat. I meant to get this project done in a few days, but a new arrival threw me wildly off course!
PO Box: Hat to Hem PO Box 182 Norwood, PA 19074The BEST Way to Knot Your Thread | Quilters Knot Tutorial | Sewing for BeginnersHat to Hem2021-07-02 | I wasn't expecting to make a "How to Tie a Knot with Thread" tutorial. As is so often the case, when you've been doing something a certain way for a long time, you tend to forget that you ever learned it at all. When I recently had a commenter ask how I knotted my thread because they had seen it before but they hadn't had it explained, I realized it wasn't something I thought about. The next time I had to knot my thread, I went slowly and I realized that, while it might not make a ton of sense if I tried to write out a reply, I could absolutely make a video showing how this is done! (Also, turns out this is called a Quilter's Knot! I learned something while making this!)
Is there a tutorial you'd like to see? Let me know! I can't guarantee I'll make a video about it, but I will definitely consider it!

Fairycore? Princesscore? Elvenfairyprincesscore? Either way, when I was designing my fantasy maternity photoshoot dress, I was very inspired by the aesthetic of the elves from J. R. R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Honestly, I just wanted the big flowy sleeves. When I was younger, I never would have dreamed I'd be sewing my own maternity photoshoot gown...or that maternity photoshoots were a thing...It's crazy how life goes sometimes!

I decided I wanted a cloak as well, so I decided to make the fantasy cloak of my dreams. After all, who doesn't want to flounce around feeling like one of the elves in Lord of the Rings?

We visited Quebec City, Halifax, Cape Breton, and, the whole reason we even thought of the trip, Prince Edward Island. We're big fans of all things Anne Shirley, from the books to the movies to the Netflix series. It was just our anniversary, so I thought you might be interested in a tour of the real-life Green Gables.
Inspired by Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic book series, Green Gables has been lovingly recreated in Cavendish, the town that inspired Avonlea. After walking through the Haunted Forest (just like Anne and Diana Barry) from the L.M. Montgomery's Cavendish National Historic Site, the Cuthbert's charming house sits on a hill between the barn and Lover's Lane.
Details from Anne of Green Gables are placed throughout the home. Were you able to spot: -Anne's Beloved Puffed Sleeved Dress
-The carpet bag Anne brought with her on the train to Green Gables
-The slate she broke over Gilbert Blythe's head
-Marilla's amethyst brooch
-Matthew's hat and cane
-The raspberry cordial
Let me know in the comments if you spotted any other details! And let me know if you'd be interested in a video where I talk about Anne's Puffed Sleeved Dress and possibly try to recreate it!
Thank you for indulging me in my trip down memory lane! We should be back to sewing content in my next video!
