Using magnetic rust nanoparticles to clean water | Headline Science American Chemical Society 2023-08-16 | The water in our oceans, lakes and rivers can become polluted with a variety of contaminants, creating a need for a simple and cheap cleaning method. One team of researchers is designing magnetic nanoparticles that can target specific pollutants like estrogen hormones, which are carried into waterways by wastewater and may be harmful to aquatic life. The particles are made from iron oxide, which most of us know as rust, and researchers can modify the surface of the particles to grab on to various pollutants. Then, a magnet can pull the particles out of the water, along with any pollutants clinging to them. Making natural pesticide from discarded aloe peels | Headline Science American Chemical Society 2023-08-15 | Aloe vera is farmed in huge quantities around the world as an ingredient for cosmetic and medicinal products. But after the gel is harvested from inside the leaf, the leftover peels are often thrown away, potentially adding up to millions of tons of waste every year. Researchers wondered if the peels could instead be recycled to make a natural insecticide, so they extracted, purified and analyzed chemicals from the peels. They’ve identified at least six chemicals in the rinds that have insecticidal properties, and they are looking for more. Treating earaches with nanoparticles that generate antiseptic on demand | Headline Science American Chemical Society 2023-08-15 | Ear infections are a common childhood ailment. They’re usually treated with antibiotics, but the rise of antibiotic resistance has scientists looking for alternative treatments. Researchers developed a new kind of earache treatment that exploits a chemical produced by the infectious bacteria. They made nanorods that catalyze a chemical reaction inside the ear that turns hydrogen peroxide, which some bacteria produce naturally, into hypobromous acid, a potent antiseptic that’s less likely to breed resistance. The researchers are now working on developing a non-invasive delivery method for the treatment, so one day doctors could apply the treatment topically rather than injecting it into the ear. Why would famous artists mix oil and tempera paints? | Headline Science American Chemical Society 2023-07-26 | The 15th century represents an important transition in art history, as oil paints gradually replaced egg-based tempera paints as the painting medium of choice. During the transition period, artists sometimes mixed materials, combining oils with tempera paint to create a blend known as tempera grassa. Reporting in ACS Applied Polymer Materials, researchers explored the effects of adding oil to tempera paint to better understand how various paint formulas would affect the appearance of finished works. Surprisingly, they found that adding oils to tempera paint does not slow its drying time, as had long been assumed. Dr. Marie M. Daly: Chemistry Pioneer American Chemical Society 2023-06-14 | Dr. Marie Maynard Daly was the first Black woman to earn a doctorate in chemistry in the U.S. At that time, 1947, she didn’t know she was making history. "In those days," Dr. Daly wrote 30 years later, "it was common for a woman to be addressed as ‘Miss’ even though she had earned a Ph.D. degree.”The young Columbia University student from Queens, New York, became the first African American woman to graduate with a Ph.D. in chemistry in the United States. Daly took just three years to complete her dissertation under the guidance of Mary Letitia Caldwell, who was then the sole female professor in Columbia’s chemistry department. Their work made valuable contributions toward understanding how enzymes break down food. During Daly’s subsequent career, she published additional important research in biochemistry, the origins of some diseases, and basic biological science. Molecular Protectors Improve Liquid Crystal-Nanoparticle Blends #shorts American Chemical Society 2023-05-24 | Adding nanoparticles to liquid crystals can give the material new and useful properties. But nanoparticles tend to clump together rather than disperse evenly throughout the mixture, which limits functionality. So researchers designed molecular protectors to cover the nanoparticles. The branched, cone-shaped molecules have end groups that improve compatibility with the liquid-crystal matrix and prevent the particles from fusing. As the mixture cools to room temperature, polarized light reveals glimmering patterns of evenly dispersed nanoparticles. What Do the Elements Sound Like? | Headline Science American Chemical Society 2023-03-27 | In chemistry, we have He, Fe and Ca — but what about do, re and mi? Hauntingly beautiful melodies aren’t the first things that come to mind when looking at the periodic table of the elements. However, using a technique called data sonification, a recent college graduate has converted the visible light given off by the elements into audio, creating unique, complex sounds for each one.
