Africa Shipwreck filmed by Inspired Planet Production with the Boxfish Luna Boxfish Robotics 2024-04-11 | The "Africa" sank in 1895 and was recently found intact off the coast of Lake Huron’s Saugeen-Bruce Peninsula in Ontario, Canada at 85m depth by documentary filmmakers Yvonne Drebert and Zach Melnick with their Boxfish Luna. The vessel, not seen since it disappeared with its crew of eleven, was identified with the help of local experts.The filmmakers had been working on a documentary, "All Too Clear," which explores life in the Great Lakes using underwater videography. So you operate in remote areas and at depths which would be unsafe to do ordinarily, and of course, the very deep dives were where divers don’t go. But even in the shallows, the ROV has huge advantages over an operator with a camera. One is that you’re at the surface. You’ve got access to all the controls. So it’s designed so that whatever angle and however you tilt the camera, the vehicle doesn’t need any energy to hold itself in that position. It’s really just using the thrusters to stabilize its position, and as a result, you get really stable video. Thirty-three years later in 2019, we visited the state with the Boxfish Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) to test its capabilities in the arena of wreck diving and enclosed spaces. Highlights from the Boxfish ROV in Antarctica Boxfish Robotics 2020-05-07 | Highlights from the 2019 Antarctic season where Boxfish Research teamed up with Dr. Regina Eisert from the Top Predator Alliance to support her work studying the mammals in the Ross Sea region. The Boxfish ROV did 15 dives with a total of 21 hours underwater down to 210m and the full 440m of tether we had with us deployed. Our co-founder and mechanical engineer Ben piloted the ROV and learned a thing or two about videography along the way.
