I lost my dear identical twin brother Paul in Nov 2016. We didn't get married or have children and lived together - proper life long identical twins. It was a huge loss. Add to the fact that I later had no family to help me through (it's complicated) it got gruelingly tough. But that's not all there were friends too who simply did not want to replace Paul and so they stayed away for fear of enslavement. It transpired there was a level of paranoia that prevented them getting involved in my life. It was a tormenting and hellish period. I wanted to take my life so many times and be gone with this place. But I dug in and said to myself, 'I'll go all the way' and own it. Own all the betrayal, rejection and loneliness a lot of which was done outdoors. I never told people on youtube half of the loss I experienced - everything had gone apart from my will and my connection to my twin, my father Terry and my guiding spirits. In this video there are memories and also more contemporary activities that I hold dear. Real life comes to you sometimes in the most brutal way but it's how you respond that counts. Whilst out tarp camping in the Wye Valley I was surrounded in the beautiful fresh morning by a nye of pheasants. Situated beneath a bank and still beneath the tarp they had know idea I was there. Had I been stalking/hunting I could have had a few for dinner. This definitely put it into the category of a stealthy wild camp. Disclaimer: I had no permission to camp beneath the spectacular Coldwell Rocks at Symonds Yat. It was late and I pitched below the bank to be concealed. After walking through rich mixed woodland I reach the caves and am inspired to remember the life that was found there upon excavation in1871. Hyena, Rhinoceros, Elephant, Bison, Bear and many others were discovered, which I convey to an Italian family visiting. Shortly after I make my way to the Limestone spires or bluffs known as the Seven Sisters. Offering up spectacular views of the valley I'm not disappointed and neither are the family I guide there. On the West is the Brecon Beacons National Park in Wales, on the East is England and South, well, it’s more of beautiful Wales. The views of the big hills and open space are glorious, the wind is fierce, the history enchanting and fascinating. We come across a vintage barn find at the start and later an awesome 16th C farm and the wonky church of St Martins at Cwmyoy was truly incredible. You bring them to the Elan Valley and Cambrian Mountains where water and big majestic hills dominate. My Uncle Mick had never been to the Elan Valley near Rhayader before and being a nice sunny day, it was my first choice. Meeting up with his grandson Ryan who lives not far away in Aberystwyth we had a great day visiting the Claerwen Reservoir for memories and views, which were fantastic as were the farming folk sheering the sheep. With a complete loop around the mountains via the mighty Cwmystwyth and then Tregaron where we had a tasty lunch at the River Bank Café we were stoked as we continued on through the awe inspiring Abergwesyn Valley. All in all, a top rate time out in the Cambrians, which was capped off by the superb timing because had we been a little later Ryan’s car would have been locked up for the night in the Elan Valley visitor centre. The site was my own until two fisherman followed me in. They turned out to be good chaps and feature in the video. Throughout the camp wildlife showed itself, I cooked a vegan meal, I read a very funny poem we wrote some years ago and had a great nights sleep.
