Every hero has an origin story.
Some of them follow an arc, others wander the wilderness until all that’s left are the correct answers to all the problems in the world. Our hero had a different method. He was more like Batman. He was clever, curious, intuitive, but mostly determined. And he was never quite sure whether he was a hero or a villain, but he knew laughter could cure just about anything.
He had a family, a wife and a son. His wife reminds us about the deep internal kindness that kept him on the right side of the line, but his son reminds us of the wonder. And we want to make sure that he is in a position to appreciate his father’s legacy as much as you do.
We are going to start a college fund, because that’s what people do. But it comes with a caveat. College isn’t the only way. Once upon a time, our friend tried college too. But it didn’t last long. Didn’t make sense. There is a version of truth that’s in books, and a version that roams, free range. We see some of that in his son, who’s red hair sits atop his hair like a fire coming from his mind. We want to leave behind some kind of trust, so that the fire can burn as bright as it needs to.
If it burns in books, so be it. But if it burns right out the end of a can, that’s okay too. We know that sometimes kids choose to go into the family business, and if, someday, he wants to spend his money on paint instead, so much the better for all of us. Hopefully he has his father’s gift, because the world needed that gift.
A piece of trivia: Early on, Aware originally went by Reps. We’re not going to make any jokes about the gym—everybody has to start somewhere, and he got big enough to carry any name he wanted. At five years old, his son is already going by “Master Goggles.” Even he understood his father was kind of a superhero. Help him carry that legacy forward. Aware did so much, but that child is the greatest thing he ever did. Or at least that’s what he thought. We’re sure you will agree.

Dear Mr. Andon,
You know what, forget the lawsuit. We’re having too much fun dealing with your situation the way we already are. In fact, until you bow down to the true kings of capitalism, we are going to continue our reign of terror on your rep.
If you want to make it stop, here’s what we now want as restitution:
1) Take all the money you made of our copyrighted image and use it to create a scholarship for down-on-their-luck trust fund kids. We want to make sure the next generation of robber barons have all the opportunities their privilege entitles them to.
2) Stop wearing that mask. You ain’t hard, son. Instead, if you want to be “Mr. Monopoly” we demand you wear a monocle to every public appearance. If you are going to be a fake fuck, at least get the costume right.
3) Admit that your entire career is secretly a Banksy-created performance art piece. That’s right, the jig is up. We have it on good authority from several prominent insiders that Alec Monopoly is actually a paid actor being used to parody the kind of mindless commodification and watering down of “urban” trends that run rampant in fine-art circles. Although our intel makes us 1000% sure, obviously, we know @Banksy wont fess up. That’s why you have to.
Money isn’t everything. Using it to crush your enemies is. Until our demands are met, we’ll see you on the streets, chump.

Dear Mr. Andon,
We still haven’t received a response to our first letter, so we are performing our due diligence by reaching out one last time.
We have devoted decades to facilitating all the pleasure of capitalism in a relaxing, gamified format, so we actually enjoy the process of lawyering, leveraging and intrigue that is corporate law. That means we were pleasantly surprised to find out the culture surrounding graffiti is so comfortably familiar. There are rules, but those rules favor the ruthless. Uncle Moneybags would certainly approve.
Therefore, while we wait for the dust to settle in the courtrooms, we are going to continue to “take it to the streets,” as the kids say.
Our researchers have discovered that there are even greater “disses” that we can engage in than just “buffing” a mural that violates our copyright. Please be patient with us, as we learn the ins and outs of a “beef,” but rest assured, this is a formal notification that we have reached that level.
We made a couple changes to the mural at 7624 Melrose Ave. It was pointed out to us that “toy” has a deeper meaning than we were aware of in “the culture,” and how fitting, for an artist of your obsessively-superficial character. Therefore, we made sure to “go over” the piece this time, instead of just erasing it. Our research found this tactic to be even more disrespectful.
Although we love to play games, we also tend to win them. We surmise, Mr. Andon, based on your trifling body of work, that you must love to play games as well. But we want to assure you that when you play with the Hasbro Corporation, you are only playing yourself.
Now consider yourself warned.
Hasbro Krew
Dear Mr. Andon,
We are reaching out in regards to a violation of our intellectual property.
Our legal team has made us aware of your work, and, to put it mildly, Hasbro Inc. is not impressed with your take on Rich Uncle Pennybags. Reducing our mascot to a plasticized brand, replicated ad-naseum as a promotional gimmick, is not in keeping with our company culture.
We haven’t forgot that, Monopoly, in essence, is about stealing. But stealing is only fair when everybody has an equal opportunity. A wall is free for anyone to paint, provided they choose to take the risk. But when multiple walls are clogged in a campaign to enrich oneself by already having money, purposefully imitating the aesthetic of being an industry plant, we feel the game is rigged, and thus, must take legal and ethical action.
Again, it’s not that we are against such self-enrichment in principle, but you’re not trying to say anything beyond “give me your money and I’ll spray paint some Louis Vuitton luggage for you.”
Therefore, while we await a judgment from the courts, we went ahead and removed the first piece from the wall at 7547 Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles, CA. We instructed the workers to leave all the other tags, because we figured they deserved the canvas to continue their practice and get better. Isn’t that what art is all about? Trying.
Unless you’re willing to try harder, we demand ALEC MONOPOLY leave us out of it. We have always been in this for the kids. Not for the toys.
Cheers,
Hasbro, Inc.
We are all capable of enforcing creative checks and balances. It’s a lot more difficult and time consuming than simply casting a vote, but you get to have a blast doing it. Politics is a never ending, large scale game of Tug of War and it’s worth remembering that the 60 million plus citizens who voted for Trump will gladly stay committed to pulling their end of the rope until we collapse, so just because Trump is out of office, doesn’t mean we’re done. If anything, it means we need to fight harder than ever while we have the momentum.
Do we think Biden is the answer to our problems? Absolutely not. In fact, we’re all but certain he will do exactly what Obama did when he took over and keep the most vital and vile parts of the machine well greased and functioning in the best interest of the ruling class. Biden won’t do much for the environment and we know he’s not defunding the police. He’ll keep us complicit in Israel’s constant human rights violations and most likely continue to enforce unjust laws at our borders.
A lot of people told us we focused on Trump too much. They said it was “trendy”, low hanging fruit. But the thing these people fail to realize, is that in order to make the biggest impact, sometimes you have to attack the biggest person in the room. But if we choose to act as if Trump, or any President for that matter, is the sole threat to civilization, we will never gain the upper hand. We have to stretch our canvases far and wide and paint in broad strokes in order to create equity, understanding and balance.
20 years of direct action has taught us a lot. It’s taught us that time flies when you’re breaking the rules, creating art, inspiring conversation and debate and doing it all with your loved ones. It’s taught us that 20 years can just serve as the warm up.
Sometimes men in power find themselves in a position to set a historical precedent for the ruling class. But the creative class will always be just around the corner, bags filled with paint, bolt cutters and burner phones, ready and willing to kill that precedent.
Here’s to the next chapter. See you out there.

Today, regardless of what happens, it’s important that each of you take a moment to acknowledge the last 4 years of sustained creative resistance and understand that it truly does make a difference. Resistance art will always reach the hearts and minds of citizens in a way that more traditional forms of protest can’t. Breaking the law, poking fun at tyrants and creating poignant art in an effort to bring hope, inspiration and joy to your community is in our DNA, but this mission doesn’t end tonight under any circumstances. Regardless of the results, we need everyone to stay committed and engaged. We don’t want to hear about how you’re “moving out of the country” if Trump wins. That’s unacceptable and nothing would make the opposition happier to know that activists and artists are fleeing America. We were all here before Trump and his racist followers and while they may have left their mark, the artwork and movements we have created since 2016 are much more permanent, much more inspiring and will be undoubtedly used as the blueprints for future movements when tyranny appears.
We’ve come a long way to get to this moment in history. All hands on deck motherfuckers.

Latin America has a history with dictators. In particular, the Fifth Brazilian Republic was known for killing dissidents. And Jair Bolsonaro is known for his masturbatory speeches that outline his wet dreams of reinstating this policy. He is offended by homosexuality, feminism and socialism, but gets a real hard-on with every fantasy of violence against his political opponents. But those opponents aren’t so stiff, and they bring both the joy and movement to their resistance that has made Brazilian’s such as Pele an icon the world over.
In soccer, a free kick is a chance to stop play for a moment and redress a foul. In democracy, freedom of speech is the illuminating force that stops tyrants from getting away with murder. Like most muscles, it must be exercised or it will wither away. Despots use fear to keep their populations in line. Activists use joy and humor to keep them engaged. It’s an old game, and the score keeps changing, but we all keep playing.
Freedom Kick is a chance for us to reset after years of foul play and unsportsmanlike conduct. Although those with power love to tout politics as a game, for so many the stakes are too high to play around. Football has always been a team effort, involving community and organization, while dictatorship is more of a solo sport. Like they say, there is only one ball. That’s a perfect metaphor for our heads of state. And our job is to kick it mercilessly until we find a way to turn each of our individual efforts into a team victory.
According to Trump’s doctor his health is “astonishing,” which means he should be in decent enough to shape to enjoy a little football, as long as everybody stands for the flag, of course. There is irony in the fact that America’s cartoon dictator finally gets to visit his wall and see what those in Mexico think of it from such an intensely close perspective. It makes for a decent ball stop, although doubtful it slows migration near as much as his belligerent, white supremacy. If America is so much greater during his tenure, how come people don’t seem as enthusiastic about coming over? Based on the athleticism displayed here, it certainly isn’t the wall.
Football, with its emphasis on teamwork and collective sacrifice, has always crossed borders with ease, but so have different kinds of ideology. Nationalism is a plague too, and at its outset, it was just as hard to predict its effect on our culture and politics. It spread quietly on the Internet, which means no one was watching to ensure fair play. And now, America is learning the hard way how fragile democracy can be.
Freedom Kick is an appeal to the American sense of justice as a match between two opposing teams. The rules are meant to protect us from cheaters. We believe it is time to reset the game, before we have to spend another four years watching a cheeseburger-scarfing, bloviating mess hobble up and down the pitch spreading hate. The game should be beautiful, if nothing else.
After all, football is a game of love. Let’s hold our heads of state accountable. Or else they will hold us accountable for our apathy.

Just open up any seventies playgirl and you can see exactly the fantasy of what masculinity is that Putin embodies so succinctly: A pudgy, square, balding, Russian-bootleg impression of a Martin Scorsese character. It would be a funny parody, except he is actually dangerous. For the Putin installation of our project, we declined going to Russia out of concern for the real consequences that would have been faced by local activists. Russia is an example of the despot at full power, and people disappear without explanation or are poisoned with impunity. He might look like a knock-off, but he is the real deal. This is the future that both the United States and Brazil are facing down, and behind the romance novel covers of a shirtless and stoic man casually riding horses is a trained spy without any moral reservations about applying his KBG training at the national level.
It’s important during a contest to have an understanding of what the stakes are, and no character better embodies it than Putin. We should take advantage of the rules, while they still exist. We should play as if our life depends on it, because once the rules are gone, it does.
The events of 2020, more than any time in history, have revealed the deep cracks running through the dual influences of capitalism and globalization. The system might not survive the pressure, and we all still have an opportunity to decide what replaces it. Get out and vote. It won’t solve your problems—that takes more concrete and sustained forms of activism, but it is a way of proving you still exist to the powers that would like to silence critical voices by removing them. Remember, it can get worse. Now take your Freedom Kick and drop it in the corner of the net while the referees are still around to hold them accountable.

Since 2001, INDECLINE has used street art, film, and guerrilla performance art to expose injustices carried out by both corporations and government agencies, using a combination of satire and parody. The anonymous, activist collective is by far the most widely-publicized group currently operating in the US. With the 2020 election looming, INDECLINE’s voice is more vital than ever. Consider contributing to the largest activist art campaign of the 21st century, and let’s make history together!
Operating as a not-for-profit collective since its inception, INDECLINE has been resourceful in effectively making noise on small budgets, as all money is raised from selling art and merchandise on their website. They have contributed thousands to keeping the national conversation honest. And they have contributed thousands more to charitable organizations that fight using more traditional methods. Now, for the first time, INDECLINE would like to raise some money outside of merchandise, so they can raise the stakes.
The 2020 election will undoubtedly continue to polarize our country. Historically, it’s times likes these where activist art is most needed. Directly following Donald Trump’s election, INDECLINE vowed to provide its own blend of creative checks and balances, and this upcoming project is set to be the grand finale. For the last year, INDECLINE has been planning a run of new projects for 2020 that will demand attention. The projects focus on the imminent international environmental threat, the draconian policies related to immigration and child separation, and the general ideology of hate and white-supremacy that is currently fomenting in the national rhetoric. The plan is to create a feature-length documentary, highlighting the history of INDECLINE (including plenty of previously-unreleased footage) in combination with new actions, and it will be released just ahead of the 2020 election with screenings, concerts and speaking engagements across the country. It will be directed by the legendary Colin Day (“Saving Banksy”) and feature interviews with famous members within the intersecting worlds of activism, punk rock, hip hop, graffiti and art.
A common refrain in response to INDECLINE’s work is, “how the hell did they pull that off?”. For the collective, these feats are the product of months, sometimes years, of focused, disciplined work and research. When they don’t have an answer, they find the answer. When they can’t find the answer themselves, they find someone else who can. Every single project has inherent risks. There have been dozens of severe injuries and setbacks, but with each successful mission, the resolve only grows. The plan is to drive until the wheels fall off, because the desired result is worth the risk. It’s not enough to just survive. We must be responsible for our own part in culture, contribute where we can, and find away to speak above the noise of continual commercials.
The time is now. Let's make some fucking noise.
In Solidarity,
INDECLINE
