Basic transport working Gamma Ray Digital 2024-02-14 | This is the culmination of months of work. Up until now all functions of Sasquatch were in separate small apps, each designed to test a specific task. This app is where we're finally integrating it all into one. What you see here is the Setup screen, where we define the config files for each film gauge the scanner will support. Here we're just telling the scanner to move forward 990 steps (an arbitrary number, which is why it's not registered correctly with each new frame, but it's close). Then we're manually taking an image of that frame. Still have to redo the integrating sphere, which is where the weird reflections on the side are coming in, but that's not necessary for this testing.

Sasquatch is alive! Gamma Ray Digital 2023-05-24 | After a very helpful remote motor tuning session with teknic, we now have the transport moving smoothly and settling into position without jitter at the end of each move.Blue in the scopes shows the error rate, and red shows the capstan movement. The idea is to get the motor to completely settle (flat blue line) by the time the capstan stops moving (flat red line). That flat line on the red is where the image is taken, so we need the film to hold perfectly still. Many thanks to Teknic for helping to dial in the motors, and Chris at The Machine Works, LLC for doing the firmware programming for us. On to front end software development!

How to fix a billing error on frame.io Gamma Ray Digital 2022-08-30 | These are the steps you need to take to fix a billing error - TL/DR: pretend you have a technical support issue, because if you say you have a billing issue they bring you to a dead end option tree with no way to talk to someone. Background:In April of 2022, we found a bug in Frame.io: If you deleted archived files, the space was not freed up. It would report that you have the space to use, but you get an error when moving files to the archive area, to the effect that there is no more space available. After a couple hours in a chat with frame.io tech support, the "solution" was to temporarily upgrade our account to the next level up, for free. The problem here is that frame.io doesn't actually have a system to do this - they merely upgraded our account and they overcharge us by $15 every month. Every month someone needs to log in an initiate a chat with them to get our money back. This can take a long time. In the time I've been waiting for a reply, I was able to record this video, write this text and tweet about it -- and I still don't have a human on the other end. 25 minutes later. The chatbot options are ridiculous, and there is no "other" option where you can get to a person. Frame.io was always a little funky, but the level of incompetence is pretty staggering, since Adobe took over.

The can is labeled "#4", the film reel itself is labeled "Reel 1-B". There are no head titles, but there is a brief title card at the tail of the film. It was scanned at 4k on our Lasergraphics Scanstation archival scanner, from a 35mm nitrate print. The film print will be donated to the Library of Congress. Allston Yards Phase II Demolition - 8 days in 3 minutes (timelapse, short version) Gamma Ray Digital 2022-05-27 | This is timelapse we've shot of the Phase 2 demolition work for the Allston Yards development in Boston, MA. The view is what we see outside our office window. This shows the completion of the HomeGoods/Dollar Tree demolition, where they will begin the next phase of the project.In the background you can see the construction for Phase I including a huge concrete pour involving two pumper trucks and a day-long parade of concrete trucks. This footage was shot in 4k on a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera and is available for license. Please inquire if interested. Original footage was shot at 1 frame every 5 seconds. This is speeded up to about 10x to roughly 1 frame per minute.

ScanStation FindGradeComparison Gamma Ray Digital 2022-04-04 | A quick comparison of the "Find Grade" feature of the Lasergraphics Scanner. We don't normally use this feature, but it can be handy when making an access copy of a dye-faded print. The source is a 16mm film with bad dye fading. Most color is gone at this point, save for the pink. Find Grade does what you'd do in a post-scan grading pass, essentially balancing what color is left. The scanstation's 12bit sensor is able to capture enough color information from the film that we can often successfully recover color from even severely faded prints. Initial Feed/Takeup motor test for Sasquatch Gamma Ray Digital 2021-10-20 | This is a simple test platform using two ClearCore motors (in this case, they're actually the smaller capstan motors, but set to the same mode as the much bigger feed/takeup motors mounted on the scanner). In any case, the motors are designed to do nothing but maintain the film position. We will also be using the HLFB functions of the motors to derive the torque on the film, and adjust the film tension accordingly.

3D printing the integrating sphere Gamma Ray Digital 2021-07-14 | Today’s project: designed the new integrating blob (not quite enough room for an integrating sphere) to go with the new LED board. Here, 3D printing the left half. The two halves will be primed and painted white on the inside, using latex paint mixed with barium sulfate. Then they're attached to one another and dropped into the existing lamp house. The original design used a mirror and some Arri Skypanel diffusion. This should provide very even light without the need for diffusion. You can just start to see the 70mm aperture (the viewport on the integrating sphere) taking shape in the foreground.

Puppies! Post War Puppies! 20 Minutes of Puppies from 1947! Gamma Ray Digital 2021-02-11 | What can we say? Puppies! Spaniels, we think. Maybe? Someone will tell us. Either way, for your enjoyment we present 20 minutes of puppies from a very long time ago. This film is from 1947 (according to the manufacturing date code on the film, so it might be a little later). The first 12 minutes is footage of people in an indoor photo studio setting (notice the professional lighting stands), looking at several small black puppies and an adult dog, presumably the mother. The last 8 minutes is really nice Kodachrome outdoor footage of a couple playing with one of the puppies. How did we get this? We're glad you asked. We love puppies, but lately we've mostly been buying vintage ski films and putting them on our youtube channel. This reel was purchased from ebay seller "onlinephotostuff" (ebay.com/usr/onlinephotostuff?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2754) -- it was sold as footage from Bear Mountain Ski Resort in the 1960s, so we were really excited to see it. Instead, we got puppies in 1947, which well, ok. Puppies are cool. Anyway, the seller refused to accept a return or exchange it for the right footage because it would be "too difficult" to figure out how to do that. We're not going to leave them bad feedback because ebay's feedback system is dumb and it just results in a cycle of retribution, with the seller usually looking better in the end. So instead, you get to enjoy 20 minutes of puppies, from a long time ago, scanned at high resolution. On us. Oh, and don't buy from onlinephotostuff because they're lousy ebay sellers. This was scanned on our Lasergraphics ScanStation archival scanner at 2k resolution in HDR mode. We didn't do any color correction or adjustment to this film. Ski Jumping Competition 1939 - 4k version Gamma Ray Digital 2021-01-22 | This is the same film we uploaded in 2014 (youtube.com/watch?v=7PdXRGv4iIw) , re-scanned at 4k HDR in our Lasergraphics ScanStation archival film scanner. This film has recently received a lot of views, so we thought we'd re-scan it at a higher resolution than we could do in 2014. In HDR mode, the scanner takes two images of each frame, and really brings out the shadow detail on underexposed footage. We have some evidence that this may be "Big Nansen" - a steel trestle tower jump in Milan, NH built a couple years before this film was shot, by the Nansen Ski Club.
