At 170$ and no subscription for the basic functions, the Amazfit Helio Ring is the cheapest smart ring I’ve ever tested. But of course you guys want to know if it is any good, and that’s what we’ll find out in this video. And just to reveal some things up front, I do think for some people this ring could be the way to go, but it is very important you are aware of its limitations. But let’s start with discussing what this device can actually do. The Helio Ring is very similar to all smartrings on the market, it’s basically a smartwatch minus the screen on your finger. As most of you will know, Oura pioneered or at least popularized this concept, and they are the market leader at the moment with the Oura Ring. The Oura Ring is indeed the best smartring out of all rings I’ve tested, but it is also the most expensive. Not because the device itself is so expensive, but because they charge a 6 dollar monthly subscription. So, it would be great if there was an alternative like the Helio Ring, that would be amazing. But the helio ring has big shoes to fill if it wants to replace the Oura Ring. So let’s first look at the App it provides, is that experience any good. And luckily the app design is pretty good, it’s actually suspiciously similar to the Whoop app. The Whoop Strap is a very popular health tracker, similar to the Oura Ring and Helio Ring, but in the form of a strap. So it makes sense Helio would steal from the best. The Zepp app that the Helio Ring uses has 4 main tabs, “overview”, “readiness”, “sleep” and “exertion”; so let’s see what tabs Whoop strap’s app looks like. Whoop has 4 main tabs called “overview”, “sleep”, “recovery” and “strain”. So those are not exactly the same, but “exertion” is very similar to “strain ”, and “readiness” is very similar to “recovery”. And it’s actually the Oura Ring who uses the term “readiness” as one of their main metrics. The overall design and metrics in each of these tabs of the Zepp are also very similar to design of the Whoop strap, like very very similar. Let’s take a look at the sleep statistics of Whoop vs the Sleep Metrics of Zepp for instance. It’s more or less a carbon copy of the design of Whoop. So, that’s both good and bad, since I really design of the Whoop app, but it feels a bit unfair to just directly copy something. Now, this is me assuming that Whoop came up with this design first, which I think is pretty likely, but if I’m wrong, please let us know in the comments below, and I’ll add that as the pinned comment in this video.

The Garmin Enduro 3 might not be Garmin’s flagship watch, but I think it is one of the best watches that Garmin currently has to offer in the “action-adventure” category. Its price point is quite a bit better than the “flagship” Fenix 8, and it even has better solar charging and battery. There are some other minor differences in favor of the Fenix 8, which I discussed in detail in my Fenix 8 review, which you might want to check out after this video *wink*. But, specs-wise, for the most part, it is basically a repackaged Fenix 8. However, will it perform as well as the Fenix 8? That’s what we will test in this video by systematically and scientifically testing the heart rate tracking accuracy, the sleep stage tracking performance and the GPS tracking consistency. Ow, and before getting to the test results, I should mention that I really like that the Enduro 3 has a fabric velcro strap. It’s not the best looking, but it is breathable, and since it is infinitely adjustable, it likely gives the watch the best chance of performing well. Also, you should realize that even with a well-fitting strap like this, large and heavy adventure watches like the Enduro 3 and similarly the Fenix 8 are still at a significant disadvantage compared to smaller and lighter watches like the watches in the Forerunner series of Garmin. The weight of the Enduro 3 will make it move around on my wrist much more, likely inducing a bunch of extra noise in the heart rate signal that a lighter watch like the forerunner 265 doesn’t have to deal with.
I would like to do a retest somewhere this year with both the Fenix 8 and Enduro 3, where I select the most accurate GPS option “all + multi-band”, and see if this significantly increases performance. Still, this performance was by no means bad, and I am happy enough still, it just surprised me a little bit.
I mentioned before that I use Garmin watches every day, and the Enduro 3 would perfectly meet my personal needs. It allows me to connect all possible sensors I need, and it has amazing battery life. I personally don’t rely on the internal heart rate sensor, and instead I connect the Garmin HRM Pro chest strap. If I were to just use it for indoor cycling and indoor running, the built-in sensor would likely suffice for me, but I just don’t want to take that chance. On the other hand, some other Garmin watches would do just as well, like my somewhat older Fenix 7 Pro and Epix 2 Pro.

If I didn’t own any Garmin watch, the Fenix 8 would definitely meet my needs, and I would be perfectly happy. I use a Garmin watch on a daily basis, and it is part of my overall tracking setup. However, if I would be shopping around, I am not sure I would actually get the Fenix 8, or if I would select another Garmin Watch instead. Whether YOU should get the Fenix 8, or if another device would be better, that depends on your needs, and on the budget you are working with. Even though the Fenix 8 is one of Garmin’s flagship watches, it might be overkill for some of you, and a cheaper watch might serve you just as well or even better. In this video we will look at the performance of the Fenix 8 in terms of heart rate measurements, sleep stage tracking and GPS accuracy. In addition we will also discuss what other reasons would be to get the Fenix 8 versus another watch from Garmin
The Fenix 8, who should get it? If you want a watch you rarely have to charge, a watch you can take on outdoor adventures, and a watch with great GPS tracking, the Fenix 8 will meet those needs. You can also connect a bunch of sensors, and you can choose between AMOLED and Solar versions. However, the question is, do you need the more expensive Fenix 8, or will another cheaper device do the trick? My guess is that for many of you, a cheaper alternative will do just as well. I’d be tempted to get the Fenix 7 Pro for instance, which is less than half the price, but has almost all the same functionalities. Also, my upcoming review of the Enduro 3 will show that this is also a viable alternative. However, if money is no object, there is nothing stopping you from getting the Fenix 8 instead. If you have a strong focus on health tracking instead, I would recommend the Oura Ring as the best overall health tracker, but the Oura Ring is a terrible sports tracker. If you want a device that can do it all, health and sports tracking, the Whoop Strap is a great alternative. However, the Whoop Strap isn’t amazing at any one particular thing, and it also always requires your phone for interacting with it, since it doesn’t have a screen. So, in the end, it is all up to you. Now, if you want to get sneak previews on results, consider becoming a YouTube member, and if you decide to get the Garmin Fenix 8, a Whoop Strap, an Oura Ring, an Eight Sleep Pod 4, another device, use the links above ;-)

The Apple Watch Series 10 is the Apple Watch most people will likely get if they plan to get an Apple Watch right now. But is it worth it in 2025? In terms of features and usability, it's one of the most solid and well-integrated devices out there. But if you want to track your workouts and your health, is the Apple Watch the way to go? That's what we will test in this video.
What is my overall conclusion on the Apple Watch Series 10? Well, in terms of health and sports tracking, it's among the best watches out there. So, if you don't own an Apple Watch yet and you use an iPhone, the Apple Watch Series 10 is a very solid choice. However, would I upgrade? Well, likely not. Even my old Apple Watch Series 6 performs more or less the same as my Series 10. Yes, there are some new features, but those are relatively minor. It's super nice that many new features also come to older Apple Watches, meaning that older models are still very good. Also, one thing that Apple still hasn't developed is a good app that helps you summarize and interpret your health data. They recently released the Apple Vitals app, which is a very bare-bones version of what I hoped this would be. But compared to competitors like Whoop and Oura, Apple is still lagging behind quite a bit. There are third-party apps, like Athlytic and Bevel, but it would be nice if this were natively supported. And yes, for those who have been asking, I promise to test these apps somewhere in 2025. So, the Apple Watch is a great choice, but it has its limitations, and if you want to get a good deal, it might be worth looking into the Series 9, which is very similar to the Series 10 and has similar tracking performance. But if you care about having the latest and greatest, don't mind paying full price, and want an extra year of updates, the Series 10 is the way to go.

If you are considering getting the new Oura Ring 4, you likely fall into one of two categories: one, you are a new user and are checking out different smart rings and smartwatches, or two, you already own an Oura Ring 3 and are looking to upgrade. Today we will therefore scientifically answer two questions: one, is the Oura Ring 4 a good health and sports tracker in general, and two, should you upgrade if you already own the Oura Ring 3? We will do this by systematically testing the Oura Ring 4 using different reference devices, and comparing these results to dozens of other smartrings and smartwatches. Before checking those results, let’s first briefly discuss what is different about the Oura Ring 4 compared to the Generation 3. Honestly, the differences aren’t huge. The only difference I REALLY care about is the new “Smart Sensing technology”. Oura says that the generation 4 ring automatically adapts to the user's unique physiology. According to Oura this technology ensures continuous and accurate data collection by finding the best signal path, even if the ring shifts on the finger. If this is true, this would make the ring quite a bit better, since before I always tried to make sure the sensors were correctly aligned with the bottom of my finger, but it would often still shift around.
Even with the new generation 4 ring I still try to align it correctly, because it probably still helps with performance. However, this is actually quite frustrating with the Oura Ring 4. With the Generation 3 ring, I could select a model that had a flat top, which made it easy to align. The Generation 4 ring, however, is perfectly round and only has a small indentation on the bottom, which I find frustratingly hard to feel. Now, the design of the Oura Ring 4 has also changed on the inside, with a fully round interior shape and recessed sensors, aiming to enhance comfort during wear. It is actually still not perfectly flush on the inside. Yes, it is less noticeable than with the generation 3 ring, but honestly, I really don’t care either way, but I am not very sensitive to these things. I’d be curious to hear how others experience this, so feel free to share your feelings in the comments below. The improved sensor technology also increased battery life, with the Oura Ring 4 now lasting up to eight days on a single charge, but this is honestly a small difference from the 7 days of the Oura Ring 3. One thing to keep in mind with smart rings compared to smartwatches is that the size is fixed, so make sure to get the right size.

This is one of the most surprising videos I’ve made in a while. If you’ve seen some of the videos on this channel, you know that, though they are generally quite beautiful, Amazfit watches tend to be quite bad at sports and health tracking. However, this 280 dollar Amazfit T-Rex 3 will probably surprise you, as it did me; though as you will see, it is not all good news. In this video we will systematically and scientifically test the T-Rex 3 for its heart rate tracking performance during exercise, compare its sleep stage tracking performance against an EEG device and look at the consistency of the GPS tracking.
I won’t list all the specs of the T-Rex 3, but I do want to put it into the context of its competitors. The T-Rex 3 is not a standard smartwatch, but falls more in the category of outdoor adventure watches. I would say it competes with watches like the Garmin Enduro and Fenix series and the Coros Vertix line. That also means the T-Rex 3 is not a small watch, and it will look quite clunky on your wrist, so that is something you need to like in a watch. However, this large size also means they were able to pack quite a large battery in this watch, leading to a battery life of up to three weeks, and up to 180 hours of continuous outdoor GPS activity. However, this reduces to 42 hours in “GPS Accurate Mode”, which is still pretty good. As we are used to from Amazfit, the 1.5 inch AMOLED display looks really good, it’s crisp and bright, at up to 2000 nits. There is Komoot integration, where you can import routes from the Komoot app. I did not try this yet, but I might go on a hike tomorrow, and if I tested it, you will hear from future Rob now.
You can also sync your Amazfit workouts to Strava, which is good, and you can actually download your workouts directly from the Zepp app in common formats like GPX and TCX, which I was surprised by. So, if you just want to get your data, you don’t even need Strava any more. I do use Strava, and you can follow me below, though it has its issues and DC Rainmaker actually recently made a nice critical video about Strava which I recommend you watch after this one. So, feature-wise the T-Rex 3 is pretty good, and it looks good too. But, can this 300 dollar watch compete with the more expensive equivalent watches of COROS and the much much more expensive watches of Garmin? Let’s take a look. Ow, side-note, you will notice the overviews I will share won’t show the results for the COROS Vertix 2S and the Garmin Enduro 3 and Fenix 8 yet. I am currently testing these, but because of my day-job I am quite limited in the time I can spend on this channel.

- How I included heart rate testing data: I included all data after the 2024 summer heart rate update. 4 workouts were excluded due to issues with the reference device missing signal.
- How I included sleep stage testing data: I included all nights from 01-01-2024 until 2024-05-10 I had data for (the latest data I had data export for). This resulted in 54 nights of data with both good EEG and Whoop data.

Wondering if you should get the Whoop Strap? Well, the Whoop Strap is one of the best all-round health and fitness trackers out there, and I use it every day myself. But, it is also not the absolute best device in any individual category, and I can back that statement up with data. [running] For instance, during most exercises, like running, it can track your heart rate accurately, and it is generally better than 70-80% of devices out there. And the correlations were similar for a second person I tested it on! [/running] [zmax] For sleep stage tracking it is also pretty good, being amongst the second-best devices, though again some devices are outperforming it. And for tracking and displaying your health data it also has one of the best and most interpretable apps out there. [/zmax] The Whoop Strap was even able to predict when I had COVID-19, but there are some caveats there we need to discuss. However, the Whoop Strap is not without its flaws. The data sharing of Whoop has always been pretty bad. It’s your data, so you should have access, and though Whoop has gotten better at this, it is not close to the level of detail that the competition provides. So, whether or not you should get the Whoop Strap really depends on what you want to do with it and how you intend to use it. So, let’s dive right into the data. Before doing that, I should mention I will add an affiliate link to Whoop below, which earns me a commission and supports the channel. I only accepted after testing it, because the Whoop Strap is genuinely something I can recommend to friends and family. Also, Whoop doesn’t even know I am making this video, the data was not filtered, and my opinions are my own.
Overall, I am happy with my Whoop Strap, and I’ve used it for many years now. There is still room for improvement though, and hopefully that’ll come over time. If you want to track everything, from exercise, to sleep, to health, and get an app that shows you that data pretty well, then the Whoop Strap is one of the main devices I would recommend. However, if you are interested in any one thing in particular, like just heart rate, or just sleep staging, there is likely a better device out there for you. And that brings me to the last downside of the Whoop Strap, which is the subscription model. There is no up-front cost for the device, but you will likely pay somewhere around 200 to 250 dollars a year to use the Whoop Strap. The upside is that you get a new device for free when they release a new one.

If you want to start tracking your sports and health using modern technology and get a good deal at the same time, then this video is for you. Black Friday is probably going to give you some great deals. Even if you're watching this video after that, there will still be many good deals. However, no matter the price, it is important to choose a device that is reliable and accurate. In this video I will use actual data and testing to show you my top recommendations, and which devices I would pick up myself. We will focus on heart rate, GPS, sleep and health tracking, which will give you a full picture and allow you to select the best device possible, at the best possible price. Be aware that I’ve rejected most companies that offered very lucrative affiliate links because I didn’t think their products were good enough. However, there were three that I did accept. I will mention them in this video, in addition to many other devices, because I believe all these products are actually good and I use them myself daily. I wanted to be transparent. The good thing is that you will also get an extra discount if you use those links. I’ve split this video into several parts that cover the topics: heart rate, GPS, sleep, health, all-round top performers, and honorable mentions, and I give recommendations for each. Let’s start with heart rate tracking, specifically heart rate tracking during sports. This is very hard for many smartwatches, because they have to measure a very weak signal. Basically a smartwatch or smartband tries to measure changes in blood flow using a flashing green light shining on your wrist. And it is doing that while you are moving a lot. This creates a ton of noise in the signal, which means it is looking for a tiny blood flow signal in a sea of noise. Still, some devices manage to do this quite well. So, let’s check out the data on some of my top picks. By the way, I’ve turned on channel memberships in case you want to support the channel, but more on that later.
The next health tracking device I use every day is the only device I own that actively improves my sleep quality, the Eight Sleep Pod 4 Ultra. This is a cover you put around your mattress that actively cools and heats each side of the bed independently. This has been a life-saver in summer to stay cool, and great in winter to be able to open the window and still stay warm. It also raises the head of the bed ever so slightly if I start to snore, to make sure I stop, and when I do, it lowers again. In addition, it did great in my testing in terms of health and sleep tracking, and it does this all without you wearing anything.

So that wasn’t perfect, and especially the Band 9 on my right arm showed quite a few issues, but overall this does improve my impression of the heart rate tracking abilities of the Mi Band 9. Compared to the competition this is not bad at all for the price. You should not expect perfection, and the difference between my left and right wrist clearly shows there is biological variation even within a person, so there will likely also be variation from person to person. So, as always, please also check out some other reviewers for their results.
Back to the Mi Band 9, what is my conclusion? Well, in terms of heart rate tracking it definitely has some issues. But, considering the price of about 50 to 60 dollars, it’s actually not that bad. We saw it was quite OK for indoor and outdoor running, and for indoor cycling it did surprisingly well. For outdoor cycling I got somewhat mixed results, but still better than expected. So, overall, if you are just starting on your wearable journey, or you are looking to upgrade from an older similar device, this is not a bad choice. Still, be aware of the limitations. Now, the sleep stage tracking on the other hand wasn’t great. I would only use this to keep track of my total time in bed, which is arguably the most important thing for people to keep track of, given that many of us are simply not giving our bodies enough time to catch some sleep. So, I would recommend the Mi Band 9 to some people, but take into account all the limitations I just mentioned. If you do decide the get a Mi Band 9, a Whoop Strap, an Oura Ring, an Eight sleep Pod 4, another device, or anything at all on Amazon for that matter, even something as small as toilet paper, there are different affiliate and non-affiliate links in the description below, and some even provide a discount. Now, given that you watched this whole video on the Mi Band 9, I think you might like this video on the Whoop Strap or this video on my top recommendations for sleep tracking.

It’s a few days in the future now and in total, I tested the Pace Pro and Pace 3 during 2 indoor runs, 2 outdoor runs, 2 indoor bikerides, 8 outdoor bikerides and 1 weight lifting session. But let’s first do a lightning round where we discuss the 23 most important things to know about the COROS PACE Pro and how it is different from the PACE 3. First, let's talk about the display and design. The COROS PACE Pro features a 1.3-inch AMOLED touchscreen with a resolution of 416 by 416 pixels, which is super bright at 1500 nits, and so far I have had no problem in bright Autumn sunlight, but of course I couldn’t test it in summer yet. And in my opinion it does look better than the PACE 3's 1.2-inch MIP screen, though I also like the screen of the PACE 3 if I’m honest. The screen is protected by reinforced mineral glass, so no sapphire glass, and the watch is housed in a high-strength polymer casing and comes with options for nylon or silicone bands. I always prefer these nylon bands, both for comfort and heart rate tracking performance. The PACE Pro boasts a processor that delivers twice the performance of the PACE 3, which leads to smooth operation and faster map zooming. The battery life of the PACE Pro is pretty good, especially considering it has an AMOLED display. During activities it offers up to 38 hours of battery life with all systems GPS and 31 hours with dual-frequency GPS. Just for reference, the PACE 3 lasts just 15 hours in dual frequency GPS mode. For daily use, it can last up to 20 days without the always-on display mode, reducing the need for frequent charging. Connectivity options include support for Bluetooth music and you can also connect accessories via bluetooth, like an external heart rate monitor or power meter. The Pace Pro has 32GB of storage for your media needs, which is a lot more than the 4GB of the PACE 3. The PACE Pro also features WiFi that is three times faster than its predecessor, allowing for quick data syncing and updates. In terms of sensors and health monitoring, the PACE Pro is equipped with an optical heart rate sensor, barometric altimeter, accelerometer, gyroscope, electronic compass, pulse oximeter (SpO2), and ECG. With these sensors COROS aims to provide comprehensive health data, including advanced features like sleep tracking, recovery timer, and heart rate variability. The PACE Pro offers a wide range of training and activity modes, including running, cycling, swimming, and more. It includes training features like EvoLab, running fitness tests, and recommended training loads, hopefully making it suitable for athletes of all levels. Navigation now has offline global mapping, which means landscape and topographic maps can be downloaded

Polar just launched their new Polar Vantage M3, which seems to be the best of all worlds in terms of Polar’s watch offering. This 400 dollar Vantage M3 shares the same software platform and sensor set as the high-end 600 dollar Vantage V3 and 750 dollar Grit X2 Pro This means the Vantage M3 basically offers all the same features as these more expensive models, but at a better price. It is also lighter at just 53 grams with the wristband and is more compact, measuring 44mm in diameter versus the almost 49mm of the Vantage V3 and Grit X2 Pro. But this smaller size and lower weight is actually an advantage in my opinion, since it likely stays on your wrists better, thereby potentially improving heart rate tracking performance. And as a bonus it will also look better on my relatively narrow wrists, which will be true for some of you as well. But of course we will test in this video whether or not those things are the case, as part of my initial review of the Polar Vantage M3. We will test the heart rate tracking during 5 types of exercise, do an initial test of the sleep stage tracking and look at the quality of some GPS tracks. By the way, for those of you that are new to the channel, my name is Rob and I am a postdoctoral scientist specializing in biological data analysis. Now, the Vantage M3 is aimed at multisport athletes, and given the size is both suitable for men and women. Polar also included some features specifically for women, like menstrual cycle tracking.
The display is a significant upgrade from the Vantage M2, with the Vantage M3 featuring a 1.28-inch AMOLED touchscreen with Gorilla Glass 3. Similar to Polar’s more high-end models, the M3 has Polar's Elixir biosensing technology that offers optical heart rate measurements, wrist-ECG, oxygen saturation, and nightly skin temperature tracking, aiming to provide comprehensive health insights. The M3 has dual-frequency GPS, and offline maps, which should hopefully make it suitable for all sorts of outside activities, and the built-in barometer will also help track altitude, incline, decline, ascent and descent. But of course I’ll also be testing the GPS tracking, and in this video we will take a first stab at that. The M3 supports turn-by-turn guidance via Komoot and Strava Routes, which does require a Strava Premium subscription. In terms of battery life, the M3 is pretty OK, though not quite as good as the Vantage V3 and Grit X2 Pro. The Vantage M3 offers up to 30 hours in performance training mode, 70 hours in eco training mode, and 7 days in smartwatch mode. Now, 70 hours in eco training mode sounds pretty good, but this actually disables heart rate tracking, so I would not really use this feature myself. Just for comparison, the Grit X2 Pro lasts for 43 h in performance training mode and 10 days in smartwatch mode.

Apple is finally competing with Oura and Whoop when it comes to health tracking, by launching the Vitals app as part of watchOS 11. But can you now replace your Oura Ring or Whoop Strap with an Apple Watch? Well today we’ll find out! We’ll do quite a bit of testing and also compare the Vitals app to the Oura Ring and Whoop Strap’s apps. I’ve tested the Vitals app over the last weeks by wearing an Apple Watch Ultra 2 on my left arm and an Apple Watch Ultra 1 on my right arm. I am testing the Vitals app with the Apple Watch Ultra by checking how consistent the measurements are between two Apple watches. My hypothesis is as follows: if for some metric the agreement between both watches is quite low, then in that range of measurements the vitals app is not very sensitive. However, if there is a strong correlation, then it is more likely that the measurements are reasonably good, even within my day-to-day variation. The reason I stress normal “day-to-day” variation is because I never felt sick in this period, so there were no major physiological changes to my body. I chose the Apple Watch Ultra, since this is the largest and heaviest of the recent Apple Watches, which increases the chances of inaccurate measurements because it might move a bit more on the wrist. And, since all recent Apple watches basically have the same sensor, I expect other lighter models to do at least as well or even better. For this test I wanted to make sure the measurements of each of the two watches were completely independent, so each Apple Watch Ultra is connected to a different iPhone with a different Apple account.
But first, what is the vitals app, and how does it work, and what CAN, and more importantly CAN’T it do? Well, in essence the Vitals App is “just” a new way of visualizing the data your Apple Watch collects. Historically the Apple Watch and Apple Health have been quite bad at presenting health and activity data to the user, and the vitals app is an attempt to fix that. The vitals app focuses on 5 key metrics: resting heart rate, oxygen saturation, breathing rate, sleep duration and wrist temperature. Each morning the Apple Watch tells you the exact values of these metrics, and it tells you if one or more of these were outside your normal baseline. The easiest way to check this is by looking at your Apple watch, where it is displayed as an actual app. However, the downside is that on the watch you can only see the detailed data for today, and an overview for the last few days. If you want to look at all your data in detail, you’re going to have to take out your iPhone. Initially I thought it would be available as a separate app, similar to the Fitness app for sports. But, unfortunately this is not the case, it turns out that your vitals data is displayed in the health app. It is basically a separate metric within the health app, similar to how your heart rate is presented for instance.

This watch strap is called the “Titanium Milanese Loop”, and is one of the strap options with the new black Apple Watch Ultra. Still, I have to admit that this black Apple Watch Ultra 2 with this black strap is probably the best looking Apple Watch I own. But, is this strap actually any good? More specifically, if I want to use it during sports, will it be able to hold my Apple Watch Ultra 2 stably on my wrist? Because that’s usually the big issue with metal watch bands, they’re heavy and don’t have a lot of grip. On the other hand, the sensor of the Apple Watch has proven to be the best heart rate sensor out there under many conditions, so maybe it won’t matter. Today we will find out if this 200 dollar watch strap holds up during sports. I just had a quick first peek at the data, and the results are quite surprising! In total, I used this black Apple Watch Ultra 2 with the Titanium Milanese Loop during 4 bike-rides, a spinning session, an outdoor run, an indoor run and a gym session. Let’s see if it was able to track my heart rate accurately.
All of this makes the price tag of this metal band seem way too high. I’m quite surprised. My subjective feeling was that this metal band was better than many other metal bands I’ve tried, in that this one kept the watch in place better than I’m used to. However, it still appears this wasn’t enough, and the combined weight of the Ultra and the metal strap, plus the fact that metal just tends to slide more on my wrist, makes the signal quality too poor for reliable heart rate tracking. The good news is that the Apple Watch notices when the signal quality is poor, and it throws out those low quality measurements; but regardless this means that large parts of your training are not tracked. If we compare this to the much cheaper Apple Watch Series 10, this makes this particular Apple Watch Ultra 2 seem like a bad deal: you get poorer tracking, and roughly the same size of screen, and it even lacks the 1Hz always-on display. Of course the Ultra has better battery life, and the looks are arguably a bit better, but still, the 46mm of the Series 10 is less than half the price. So, if it were me, I’d definitely not get this metal band with my Ultra. Or, if I did, I would get a second strap for use with sports activities, but the costs then really start to add up. The good thing is that if you get the Ultra with another strap, it’s likely 100 dollars cheaper, which saves you 10% on the price and increases the performance of the Apple Watch Ultra by quite a bit. All in all, I am a bit disappointed. I honestly expected this strap not to degrade performance as much as it turns out it does. So, be forewarned if you do decide to get it.

14:09 Conclusions
Today we will do a first systematic and scientific heart rate test of the Apple Watch Series 10, both the 46 and 42 mm version. We will start simple, by doing an indoor bike-ride, which should hopefully be an easy pass for the Apple Watches. Next, we will do an indoor run, which might be slightly harder. Then we will make it significantly harder by doing a run outside. This is harder because light is being used to measure your heart rate, you might have seen green or red lights on the bottom of your smartwatch, and the bright light outside might confuse the sensors on the Series 10. And we will close off with two of the hardest exercises, cycling outside and weightlifting. While cycling, the watch has to deal with the light, but also with a lot more bumpiness and tension on my arms. And we will close off with the hardest exercise for a watch to track, weightlifting. When lifting weights there is so much tension on your arm, which makes it super hard for the watch to get a signal. Previous generation Apple Watches generally stop recording heart rate when the tension on my arm gets too big, let’s see if that is also the case now.
Hardware-wise the heart rate tracking of the series 10 is more or less identical going as far back as the Series 6. Apple has probably tweaked the firmware over time, squeezing a little bit of performance boosts out of the sensor, but the difference won’t be huge, and many older models likely got these updates too. That being said, the Apple Watch has been such an amazing heart rate tracker for such a long time, that it is hard to improve significantly. Competitors are starting to catch up, but Apple is the OG in super accurate heart rate tracking on the wrist, and their performance hasn’t faltered. So, should you get the Apple Watch Series 10? Well, in terms of heart rate tracking it is one of the best devices out there, so, if you don’t mind charging it every day, and you have an iPhone, it would be one of my top recommendations. However, if you already own a Series 6 or up, you probably won’t see much improvement in terms of heart rate tracking. However, there are three things in the Series 10 that make it stand out for me so far: first, the fact that the display can go down to a 1Hz refresh rate, enables you to see seconds on the always-on display makes the always on display so much nicer. This is partly physiological, because I don’t know how useful it is, but I like it so much. Second, the larger screen is a nice update, while nice, this wouldn’t be worth the upgrade. However, what makes a bigger difference to me is that the Apple Watch is now thinner

The Huawei Watch GT5 and GT5 Pro have a brand new heart rate sensor and improved dual-frequency sunflower GPS. In this video we will scientifically and systematically test if those changes improve performance compared to the previous generation, and also compare it to many of the other newly released watches, like the Pixel Watch 3. As you will see later, some results are quite unexpected. But, before diving into the testing, let’s briefly list the 8 most important features of these brand new Huawei Watches. One of the standout features is the improved TruSense sensor in both watches. This new sensing module has specialized darkened glass in between the LED and sensor, which should reduce unwanted light reflections and improve signal quality by over 20%. Similar to the new Pixel Watch 3, the GT5 series offers new running features in the form of advanced running form analysis, detecting ground contact time, vertical oscillation, and balance to help prevent injuries. But also other sports get improvements, like cycling, where you can now see your watch data live on your phone if you want. And during outdoor activities there are new color maps that can be used while working out. More importantly, Huawei says that the GT5 series also boasts improved GPS performance with dual-band sunflower GPS technology, enhancing distance and pace accuracy by 30%, and 20%, respectively. This is something I am of course looking forward to testing. Battery life is one thing Huawei does better than many other smartwatches on the market. The GT5 and GT5 Pro 46mm models offer up to 14 days of battery life, while the 41 and 42 mm models provide up to 7 days. With the pro model supporting wireless fast charging, being fully charged in 60 minutes. Lastly, the GT5 series supports full keyboard input for messaging apps, including SMS, WhatsApp, and Instagram, with predictive text and emoji support in 20 languages.

Google Nailed it with the Pixel Watch 3: the heart rate tracking is better, it has consistent sleep stage tracking and it’s finally the right size. In this video we’ll scientifically and systematically test the 45 and 41 mm versions of the Pixel Watch 3. Based on these tests, as an Android user, the Pixel Watch 3 would be one of my top choices right now. There are still some things that could be better, but this is definitely the first Pixel Watch I could see myself using as a daily driver. We already discussed all the specs in my first video on the Pixel Watch 3, so let’s dive right into the testing! As always, we will start off by testing the heart rate tracking performance during different exercises. I tested the watch on myself, and I also did some tests on Theresa and Raphael. After that we will test the sleep stage tracking and the GPS tracking, and at the end we will look at some of the health and running features.
So, what is my general conclusion on the Pixel Watch 3? Well, as I said, this is the first Pixel Watch I would actually wear as my daily driver. That’s partially because of the increased performance in heart rate tracking and the still very decent sleep stage tracking, and in part due to the larger size being available. So, if you’re on Android, this would be one of my top two picks at the moment, and the only other device I would consider equal is the Whoop Strap. The Whoop strap has better battery life and has an even slightly stronger sports and health focus. But the difference is not huge and the overall heart rate and sleep tracking performance of the Pixel Watch 3 is probably slightly more accurate than the Whoop Strap. And with those new scores that Google introduced, the health and sports focus of the pixel watch 3 is quite good already. Be aware that on iOS you unfortunately cannot use a Pixel Watch, but their the Apple Watch is very accurate at sports and health tracking, of which new versions are also coming out today. The main downside of the Apple Watch is that the visualization and presentation of the data has always been less than ideal, though some good first steps have been taken with the new vitals app. So who should get the Pixel Watch 3? Well, people on Android who need great heart rate tracking, pretty good sleep stage tracking and quite good GPS tracking. You just shouldn’t mind charging it roughly every day or two.

26:03 Conclusions
The Galaxy Watch Ultra is both great and disappointing at the same time, at least based on my testing. I tested the heart rate tracking during 76 workouts, the sleep stage tracking for 22 nights and the GPS during 20 bike rides. Oh, and I also tested the blood pressure feature. All of this has left me with mixed feelings on the Galaxy Watch Ultra. As you will see, it does quite well in some areas, but it disappoints in others. Ow, and I will try the new FTP feature with the Galaxy Watch Ultra at the end of this video, but let’s start off by looking at the heart rate tracking performance!
I don’t know about you, but these results confuse me a bit. I’m not surprised that the Galaxy Watch didn’t perform well for weight lifting, almost no device does. What surprises me is that it does relatively well for cycling outside, but in turn doesn’t do very well for indoor cycling. I need to be clear here, the correlations for indoor cycling were very similar to those for outdoor cycling, it’s just that almost all watches have a much higher correlation for indoor cycling than for outdoor cycling, whereas the Galaxy Watch Ultra shows no real difference.
To be clear, to get your FTP you need a power meter, which is likely only true for a small percentage of people getting the Galaxy Watch Ultra. And I expect that anyone who is going to invest in a power meter is fine doing a 20-minute test or ramp test. Still, it is nice Samsung tries to include this feature. The Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra is not a bad watch, and if you want to use it for outdoor activities, it might be a good choice. However, it does have its issues. I was disappointed with the heart rate tracking performance for indoor cycling and weight lifting, and I have some doubts about the reliability of some of the extra health metrics like blood pressure and body composition analysis. I do suspect that if you have less extreme intervals for indoor cycling, that the performance of the Galaxy Watch might be better, and in general I recommend checking out other reviewer’s results as well. If you do decide to get a Galaxy Watch Ultra, a Whoop Strap, an Oura Ring, an Eight Sleep Pod 4, another device or anything at all on Amazon for that matter, even something as small as toilet paper, want to potentially save some money and at the same time support the channel, there are different affiliate and non-affiliate links in the description below that do not cost you any extra and some even provide a discount. Given that you watched this whole video on the Galaxy Watch Ultra, check out this video on the new Galaxy Ring, or this video on my top recommendations for sleep tracking. Thank you so much for watching, and catch you in the next video!

Update on Cardio Load and Target load from Google:
- Cardio Load is based on training impulse (TRIMP). It is a measure of the amount of work that your heart has done during activities. You receive more cardio load for longer and more strenuous activity based on your heart rate – with exponentially higher weight assigned to higher heart rate. Cardio Load focuses on periods of activity and training, therefore only accumulates during intensities at or above 30% or your Heart Rate Reserve (HRR).
- Target Load leverages your readiness and your training history to provide a personalized target for your Cardio Load each day. Target Load is rooted in the concept of Acute:Chronic Workload Ratio (ACWR). Google proposes a target ACWR range of 0.95-1.05 for maintaining fitness and 1.0-1.1 for increasing fitness (users can select between these in the app) reflecting the evidence that this will deliver significant fitness gains over a training period (e.g. 12 weeks) while reducing the risk of injury/illness that can occur with sudden increase in load.
Intro:
The main change comes is in the way Pixel Watch 3 now presents your sleep and recovery in the app in a more actionable way. However, before discussing that, I am hoping my diligent testing has earned a subscribe from you. And it also really helps me get access to devices sooner from manufacturers if you leave a like or comment. OK, back to the Pixel Watch 3. The Pixel Watch will now move in the direction of the Oura Ring and Whoop Strap, which are known for presenting sleep, recovery and training load in a way that is easy to understand and actionable for the user. The Pixel Watch 3 will keep a similar sleep score to what you are used to from Fitbit, but in addition three new scores will be introduced: an updated readiness score, a cardio load score and a target load score. And the idea is that you use these three scores together to plan your sleep, your day, and your activities. The way it is supposed to work is as follows: When you wake up you see a summary of your most important health and fitness metrics: your sleep quality, your readiness score, your progress towards your weekly exercise goal, and finally, very similar to Apple’s vitals app, you see if any of your health metrics deviate from your personal range. These are metrics like your heart rate variability, breathing rate and oxygen saturation. The new readiness score is now supposed to be more personalized to you, and is basically a summary of many of these metrics, using your sleep patterns, resting heart rate, and HRV. This score tries to measure your body's state of recovery, trying to help you understand your body's response to load and exercise and is particularly aimed at athletes and fitness enthusiasts who want to ensure they are not overtraining and are giving their bodies enough time to recover.

I hate this watch, I really really hate it, I just wasted two hours of my life, and none of that has got me any closer to understanding how good this watch actually is. So, better wording might be that the CMF Watch Pro 2 is just a nightmare to review. I love getting the data out of a new watch, and seeing my computer code generate the graphs we need to test these watches for their sports and health tracking. But that is just impossible with this watch. They promise Strava integration, but it just doesn’t work, at least no data appears for my two watches. Getting to the actual data these watches collect is something I haven’t managed, but who knows, maybe my monkey brain just wasn’t able to figure it out. All of that means this review will be different from my normal reviews in two ways: first, since I am not going to be able to access the raw data, which normally allows me to make quantitative plots like -this- and -this-, instead it will be a bit more qualitative, meaning we will just look at the data from the CMF Watch app side-by-side with the data from my references. The second thing that is different is that I cannot justify spending a lot of time testing this watch when I can’t actually get the data out.
And that’s not all. We didn’t discuss this yet, but this watch also has GPS. Well, at least it is supposed to have GPS. For me it always took forever to connect. Not once did it connect while I was waiting in place to connect before starting my ride. Yes, there were some buildings around, but basically all watches I tested before would connect in the exact same locations I tested. Maybe if I’d waited some minutes more it would have worked, but I just didn’t have the time. By the way, if you like this video, I hope that earns me a subscribe from you, that really helps the channel. The same goes for clicking that like button and commenting.
But back to the testing, overall my impression of the sport and health tracking of the CMF Watch Pro 2 isn’t great. As I mentioned before, this isn’t a full review, but that is not because I did not want to make one. I just couldn’t get the data I needed to do it. If we look beyond health and sports tracking, the CMF Watch Pro 2 isn’t bad for the price. The screen is bright enough and responsive, and I’m sure you could use it as a decent smartwatch. However, the integrated health and sports features don’t seem to be very accurate, at least not on me. So, please also check out some other reviewers, since performance can vary person-to-person. Though honestly I doubt very much that this watch will do well on anyone. If you’re looking for a cheap smartwatch with OK health and sport tracking, and would rather get an older model fitbit or a huawei band instead.

Before sharing my final conclusions, we have to discuss the current version of the Samsung health app and the integration of wearables. Two things could be improved there: first of all, it just feels unfinished. I already told you that my galaxy ring wasn’t connected for the first two bike-rides, which was kind of annoying. So it just feels that the app wasn’t fully ready, but Samsung pushed it out with the launch anyway. Now, the second thing that can be improved is data presentation. If we compare the Samsung Health app to the Oura Ring or the WHOOP strap app, the Samsung app just isn’t as good. It is not as cluttered as the Apple Health app, but at least the Apple Watch has very accurate tracking, and things are a bit better there with the introduction of the Vitals app as well. It’s not all bad with the Samsung Health app, there is some advice about how active you should be that day, and they also give you a sleep score, which is nice, with an honestly very oversimplified explanation of how this score was calculated. However, given that this seems largely based on the time spent in the different sleep stages, which didn’t seem great in this initial test, I am not sure how much I would rely on this score. Also, the sleep coaching they provide assigns you a sleep animal, which I find totally cringe, and seems more suitable for children than adults. All-in-all, I am personally not a huge fan of the Galaxy Ring yet, but that doesn’t mean there is no potential. The hard-ware is good, especially details like the charging case, which has a battery of its own, and which is much better than the Oura Ring’s charging station. And you can even see how full the charge of your ring is when you take it off, and looking at the blinking patterns of the LEDs, which is very smart. However, there are a few things that need to happen for me to recommend the ring. First of all, if Samsung does a few more sleep studies and improves their sleep stage tracking, and second they also need to improve the data presentation in the app. If those things happen, I would be really keen to use it, especially since they don’t charge you a monthly fee, like Oura and Whoop do.

The Galaxy Watch Ultra and Galaxy Watch 7 have a new sensor that Samsung claims has improved performance. But is that true? Today we will find out by systematically testing the heart rate tracking performance, sleep stage tracking and GPS tracking. And we’ll also take a quick look at some other features like blood pressure, FTP and body composition. I want to get this video out as soon as possible, so unlike my normal videos, I will not show you all results at once, but I will show you the results as I get them. So I’ll be as surprised as you and we will find out together how good the Galaxy Watch Ultra and Watch 7 are in my first test. This will be an initial review, and the full review will come in a week or two.
But what is my overall initial conclusion. Well, the Galaxy Watches aren’t terrible, but they are definitely showing some issues. The Sleep stage tracking appears to be similar to what it has always been, the heart rate tracking for indoor cycling was surprisingly bad, and for outdoor cycling it was surprisingly good. The heart rate tracking does seem to have changed compared to previous generations of galaxy watches, and the new sensor appears to be especially good for outdoor cycling when tested on me. The GPS on the Galaxy Watch Ultra was quite good in my first test, though I cannot explain why it did better than the Watch 7, since from what I understand both have the same dual frequency GPS system. So, overall the Galaxy Watches show some improvement over the previous generations, but I am not sure yet how big that improvement actually is. I’ll do more testing over the next weeks, and share my comprehensive review then, which will also include a test on my colleague Raphael.

The OnePlus Watch 2 looks great, feels premium and is relatively affordable. But, can it challenge established smartwatch brands like Garmin, Fitbit and Apple that have been in the health and fitness business for a long time? Let’s see if getting the OnePlus Watch 2 is the right decision for you!
Now, in this video I will test the fitness and health tracking of the OnePlus Watch 2 in a systematic and scientific manner, and as objectively as possible rank it against many of the other watches out there. And as always, I want to start off with the heart rate tracking performance, for which you can see the results here.
So, in moments the GPS tracking was consistent, but generally I found it to be quite noisy and it also showed a few weird artifacts. Again, it’s not the absolute worst out there, but it also doesn’t really compete with the big boys. Therefore, also for the GPS tracking I would give the OnePlus Watch 2, 2.5 to 3 out of 5 stars. So, who is the OnePlus Watch 2 for? Well, if you like the design, spec-wise it has quite a few things going for it, given the price, and the battery life is also pretty good. If the health and fitness features are not your focus, but you still want some insights, it might just be good enough. If you do decide to get a OnePLus Watch 2, a Whoop Strap, an Oura Ring, an Eight Sleep Pod 4, another device or anything at all on Amazon for that matter, even something as small as toilet paper, want to potentially save some money and at the same time support the channel, there are different affiliate and non-affiliate links in the description below that do not cost you any extra and some even provide a discount. Given that you watched this whole video on the OnePlus Watch 2, check out this video on the new Huawei Watch Fit 3, or this video on my top recommendations for sleep tracking. Thank you so much for watching, and catch you in the next video!

Have you ever wondered how your Apple Watch can tell if you're dreaming, tossing, or in deep sleep? Today, we’ll explore the science behind Apple Watch’s sleep tracking, what makes it quite different from other sleep trackers, and why that fact makes it surprising it outperforms most other devices. We'll also share scientific data showcasing that the Apple Watch is one of the best sleep trackers out there, though there are a few competitors that give it a run for its money.
The Oura ring costs around 300 dollars, but in addition to that you have to pay a 6 dollar monthly membership fee. The Whoop Strap doesn’t cost anything upfront for the device, but depending on when you buy it will likely set you back about 200 dollars a year. If you get the Eight Sleep cover, which is my favorite sleep improvement device, you are likely mostly interested in the active cooling and heating of the mattress, because if you just want sleep tracking, the price tag of about 2500 dollars is quite hefty. Fitbit is the cheapest brand in this list, and currently provides a lot of the sleep tracking without a subscription, though I am afraid that their current premium membership will take over more and more of the free features. The Apple Watch SE is among the more affordable options available. However, there’s more to sleep tracking than just your sleep stages.
Apple has historically been terrible when it comes to data presentation, with the health app being one of the worst apps for quickly viewing your most important data. Luckily, the Apple Watch has recently gotten an upgrade with iOS 18, which now features the Vitals app.

I was wrong about the Huawei Band 9, but I was also right. And that’s why today’s video is a very important one to watch, even if you are not interested in the Huawei Band 9 specifically. Let me explain. A few weeks ago I made a first video on the Huawei Band 9, in which I showed that the Band 9 appeared to perform less good than the older Band 8, at least based on the initial data. Because of technical reasons I could only access a limited amount of data, but I thought it was important to show you what I had already. I now have access to the full set of data I had at the time, and this tells a different, and potentially even more interesting story; and not just about the Huawei Band 9, though of course we’ll be doing a full health tracking review in this video. It also tells you something about the testing of smartwatches, and the potential reasons why I might get different results from for instance DC Rainmaker or Matt LeGrand, but more on that later. In this video we will focus on two aspects of the Huawei Band 9: the sleep stage tracking performance and the heart rate tracking accuracy
Still, overall I think my testing results are good news for Huawei and their new Band 9. The results seem to indicate the Band 9 is better than my initial results indicated. Their new sensor layout might not be as bad as I initially thought, and my new testing seems to indicate it is roughly on-par with the older Huawei Band 8, though we do see some slight differences, some in favor of the Band 9 and some in favor of the Band 8. At least that is, if we consider the better of the two Band 9’s I tested. So, why would these give different results, and why were my initial results even worse? Well I have several theories. The first thing that likely played a role is that random variation in performance meant that the limited amount of data I had initially was unfortunately not representative of the actual performance. You can imagine that each time I do the same heart rate test, there is a chance it will be better or worse than average. This is usually represented by this type of bell-curve, where the height in the curve indicates the chance of getting a better or worse result for a single test. The first is that the way my bones and blood flow are formed on both wrists might make them easier to measure on the left side versus the right side. Or, it could be that the production quality of one watch was better than the other. I can’t say which of these is true, unless I collect a lot more data. Still the Huawei Band 9 appears to be quite decent overall, which means I can now recommend it if you want a cheap heart rate tracker that is pretty good. Also check out the results of some other reviewers!

Apple got all the attention last week, launching their new Vitals app, which is a direct competitor to Whoop. However, Whoop also very silently launched a major upgrade about a month ago, which might just keep it ahead of Apple. The Whoop Strap and Whoop app have been my go-to system for overall health and sports tracking, because as an overall package it is great. However, when it comes to the individual elements of health and sports, the Whoop Strap has always been good, but not amazing. One thing that has needed some improvement in my opinion is the Heart Rate tracking during sports. So, imagine my surprise when I noticed that the heart rate patterns of my Whoop Strap looked different from normal. At first I thought that Strava, the app I use to save my heart rate, had made changes to the raw data, but this wasn’t the case. So, I went through the update logs of Whoop and saw that about a month ago they launched an “Improved heart rate estimation algorithm”. This explains why my heart rate patterns look different
So, though the differences are not as big as they are for me, I would say that also on Raphael the heart rate tracking seems to have improved. Additionally, the weird artifacts of having this weird smoothed constant heart rate are gone for him as well. So, overall, there does seem to be an improvement in heart rate tracking, which is something I am quite excited about. It also shows the power of algorithms. With the exact same hardware, Whoop has been able to get significantly better performance. This also gives me hope that other aspects, like for instance the Sleep stage tracking might improve further. Where Whoop is a lot better than the Oura Ring at heart rate tracking, it is slightly worse at sleep stage tracking. I personally use a combination of the Oura Ring and Whoop Strap for most of my wearable health tracking, where Whoop is probably the best all-rounder for sports and health, but the Oura is better for just the sleep part. I am curious if the new Vitals app that Apple announced will be able to challenge them, though my first tests make me think it is just a first step, and a lot is still lacking compared to what Whoop and Oura offer, but more about that in a future video.

Imagine an Apple Watch, but with better battery life and with close to half the price tag. That’s what the Huawei Watch Fit 3 promises to be, and it’s also compatible with both Android and iOS. On paper, it seems to address many of the common complaints people have about the Apple Watch. But that's not why so many of you have been urging me to review it. The buzz is all about Huawei's claims of improved health and sports tracking. So today, we're diving into my initial tests of the Watch Fit 3. And I have to say, in terms of design, this is my favorite Huawei product in a while. I think the square shape is just so much nicer than the elongated shape that the previous Huawei Watch Fit watches and most Huawei bands tend to have. But enough about aesthetics and specifications. Let's jump straight into the testing and see how this smartwatch really performs.
I don’t have enough data to draw any definitive conclusions about the GPS tracking of the Huawei Watch Fit 3. However, at first glance it does look promising. Overall, the Watch Fit 3 seems like a solid device. For about 160 euros or dollars you get good quality heart rate tracking and what seems like decent GPS tracking. However, the sleep stage tracking is not very good, so I would only use it to track my total time in bed. Considering the price point and good battery life, it’s a solid choice, and it could be an Apple Watch alternative for those people on Android focussing on sports tracking, or even people on iOS that don’t like the limited battery life of the Apple Watch. I should note though that it might be difficult for people to get any Huawei device if you live in the USA, and it might take a while for it to be listed on Amazon. There is also one small thing that bugs me about the screen of the Watch Fit 3. This might be my slight OCD rearing its head, but every time I look at it, at least optically, the bezels on the top and bottom seem slightly bigger than those on the sides. This is a super small thing, and quite personal, but it does take away from some of the beauty of this device. All in all, I do like the watch fit 3, and I would have no problem recommending it to people that want a well-priced smartwatch with good heart rate tracking. Therefore, overall, I’d give it 3.5 out of 5 stars generally, and given the low price, I might bump it to 4 stars, with the caveat that the sleep stage tracking is not reliable enough. Now, of course the results I showed you might vary from person-to-person, so please also check some other reviewers.

I went through hundreds of scientific publications to find out which the best sleep stage trackers are that money can buy, depending on your budget. Is it Apple, Google, Samsung, Oura, Garmin, Polar or maybe Fitbit. Well, today you are going to find out! This is a video I’ve been wanting to make for a long time, and the results are super interesting. It also shows us some major problems with sleep tracking I have not addressed in my previous videos. A spreadsheet with all the statistics and references I base my findings on is in the description below, and of course there are timestamps on this video's timeline to make things easier for you.
Detecting whether you are asleep or awake is what wearables would traditionally measure in the early 2010s, with the launch of the first Fitbit Tracker for instance. However, during that same decade more and more companies tried to do something much more complicated: tracking the sleep stages defined by scientists, albeit in a slightly simplified form, which were termed light sleep, deep sleep and REM sleep. This is actually really hard, since these are usually studied in the lab by measuring brain waves, eye movements, and muscle movements. Instead, a wearable has to do it based on just your heart beats and movements. In my testing I’ve seen that wearables are becoming much better at this, and more people than ever seem to be using them to keep track of their sleep patterns. Over the last few years I’ve also found that it’s becoming more and more accepted in the scientific community to use smartwatches and smart bands in sleep research. However, for both consumers and scientists it’s important to know which devices are good at tracking stages and which are not so reliable, since some are quite bad. Luckily, scientists are recognizing the value in actually testing the performance of wearables using polysomnography or EEG, giving us an idea which smartwatches are good, and which are not. However, they usually test only one or a few devices at a time, so similar to before I went through literature, and extracted the results from all papers I could find to give us a good overview of the performance of different devices.

The brand-new Eight Sleep Pod 4 is a significant upgrade over the Pod 3, with more features, like new temperature controls and an adjustable base, faster cooling, and, if you get the ultra version, the ability to reduce your snoring; or maybe more importantly, your partner’s snoring as well. The Eight Sleep Pod 3 has been my favorite sleep improvement device for a while now, so let’s see if the Pod 4 can improve on this. Similar to the Pod 3, the Pod 4 simply wraps around your mattress, and provides temperature control, health tracking and much more. In this video we will take a look at those new features and scientifically review the Pod 4 Ultra. We will independently and systematically test the sleep stage tracking, the heart rate and heart rate variability accuracy, and the breathing rate measurements. And of course we'll take a look at one of the most interesting features, snore reduction. Finally, we will also look at the patterns of the cooling and heating of the Pod 4, and how that correlates with my core body temperature. I will also discuss who should upgrade their older generation Pod to the Pod 4; and Pod 3 owners will be happy to hear that even though the Pod 4 is better, the Pod 3 is still good enough in most situations, but it depends.
Before starting the testing, let me give you an overview of the Pod 4’s and Pod 4 Ultra’s features and improvements over the Pod 3. One of the main new introductions is the "Tap to Control'' feature. If you tap twice on a sensor on either side of the bed, that side will cool down further, or if you triple tap it will warm up, and these actions are always confirmed by a vibration motor. This means you don’t have to get your phone out to make adjustments during the night. This tapping can also be used to mute the alarm, and if you get the ultra version, a quadruple tap will actually change the position of the bed.
The Pod 4 will come in two versions, the normal Pod 4 and the Pod 4 Ultra, which also includes an adjustable base that can elevate both the head and feet

This video serves as a warning, both to you and to me. I expected when I bought two Huawei Band 9’s that their heart rate performance would be as good, or maybe even better than the Huawei Band 8. The Band 9 looks more or less the same as the Band 8, and the Band 8 was one of the top performers in my testing last year. With a lot more time having passed to develop the hardware and firmware, I was hoping Huawei would be able to squeeze even better heart rate performance out of the Band 9, and I assumed it would be at minimum as good as the Band 8. But the saying appears to be true, when you assume, you make an dot-dot-dot out of you and me. Today we will take a look at my initial testing of the heart rate tracking performance of the brand new Huawei Band 9, and you can judge yourself if you are disappointed too.
Now, this is only an initial test, but it was so surprising that I wanted to get this video out quickly. The question remains, why would the Band 9 do worse than the Band 8? Well, one explanation could lie in the sensor set. It seems Huawei changed the configuration of the LEDs and sensors on the back of the watch. Now, this is not my area of expertise, but looking at it you can see the Band 8 has two sets of LEDs on the outside, with the large photodetector in the middle. The Band 9 on the other hand has aone set of LEDs and photodetector very close to each other on top, then another set of LEDs exactly in the middle of the watch with a second photodetector a bit further down. Now, I don’t know how the signals from the photodetectors are combined, but it might be that the software is not optimized enough yet to deal with these two independent signals. However, this does not seem to be the first watch where Huawei uses multiple photodetectors, looking at the back of some of the GT series watches you can also see a symmetrical ring of photodetectors around a central pair of LEDs, so multiple photodetectors does not appear to be a new concept for Huawei. Now, this is all pure speculation, since I am not even sure if both LEDs and photodetectors on the Band 9 are used to measure heart rate, it might well be that one pair was designed for heart rate and the other for oxygen saturation. Still, these initial findings are disappointing, but we will have to wait for my full review to draw any final conclusions.

Polar just released a new heart rate tracking algorithm as part of the new sensor in the Grit X2 Pro & Vantage V3. This should provide better performance, especially for weight lifting and different types of interval training. By testing it systematically we will see if this new algorithm actually shows promise, so get ready for my initial testing of the hardware and firmware in these Polar Watches.
Okay, so for weight lifting I don’t see a substantial improvement in terms of heart rate tracking, and all the Polar Watches I tested are in more or less the same area. Even with the updated algorithm, many of the peaks in my heart rate are not detected by the Grid X2 Pro and Vantage V3. My overall testing of the new sensor and algorithm of Polar seems to indicate that, at least on me, there hasn’t been a major improvement. Again, Polar said that the sensor performed atypically bad on me compared to most people, so my results might be a fluke. So again, check out more reviews, but I still hope and expect this kind of data driven analysis is useful for you. Also, unfortunately, I wasn’t able to do a test for running because of an injury, but I’ll add that in a future video. If you like the design and functionality of the Polar Grid X2 Pro or Vantage V3, I would recommend getting the Polar H10 ECG chest strap to go with it. That way you get very reliable heart rate tracking, and you don’t have to worry about the performance of the optical heart rate sensor in the watch. If you do decide to get a Polar Watch, a Whoop Strap, an Oura Ring, an Eight Sleep Pod 3, another device or anything at all on Amazon for that matter, even something as small as toilet paper, want to potentially save some money and at the same time support the channel, there are different affiliate and non-affiliate links in the description below that do not cost you any extra and some even provide discounts. Given that you watched this whole video on these Polar Watches, check out this video on the Garmin Forerunner 165, a watch I really liked, or this video on my top recommendations for sport and health tracking. Thank you so much for watching, and catch you in the next video!

The Samsung Galaxy Fit 3 seems like a no-brainer; it has most of the Galaxy Watch’s functionalities, but at a fraction of the price. I bought this watch for the equivalent of about 65 dollars. Compare that to the Galaxy Watch 6, which is about 3-4 times more expensive at roughly 220 dollars. But, how does the actual performance of the Galaxy Fit 3 compare to the Galaxy Watch when it comes to health and sports tracking? Let’s find out: in this video I will systematically and scientifically test the heart rate and sleep tracking of the Galaxy Fit 3 and compare it to the performance of the Galaxy Watch, and I found some things I did not expect. As always, I want to start with the heart rate tracking performance, which I tested on myself and on my colleague Raphael.
Now, normally, I would next take a look at the GPS tracking performance. However, the Galaxy Fit 3 does not have built-in GPS, but it uses your phone’s GPS instead. So it will do just as well as your phone is at GPS tracking. So, what is my overall conclusion on the Galaxy Fit 3, is it a better bang for buck than the Galaxy Watch 6? Well, maybe… It is a decent smartwatch, and actually has way better battery life than the Galaxy Watch 6. The Galaxy Watch 6 is rated at about 40 hours, whereas the Galaxy Fit 3 is rated at 13 days. However, the Fit 3 just doesn’t feel very premium. It is very similar to so many other smart bands out there, like the Huawei Watch Fit 2 for instance, which is a bit more expensive, but has far superior heart rate tracking. Of course, that isn’t part of the Samsung ecosystem. However, if you want to stay in the Samsung ecosystem, I would personally rather buy an older Galaxy Watch, like the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4, than the Galaxy Fit3. Honestly, the recent Galaxy Watches, so the 4, 5 and 6 aren’t all that different, and you might be able to find the 4 or 5 for just over 100 dollars, which would be my preference. As you saw, in general, Galaxy Watches aren’t the best performers on me in terms of heart rate and sleep stage tracking, they are not terrible, but if you are not committed to the Samsung ecosystem, there are better choices in my opinion. Now, of course the results I showed you might vary from person-to-person, so please also check some other reviewers.

The Forerunner 165 provides some of the best balance between price and performance in the Garmin line-up, and in this video I am going to use a bunch of data to show you why I think that is, and why it is the Garmin I would likely choose to buy for myself. Still this watch is far from perfect, and there are a few choices Garmin made that I am not completely happy with. In this video we will test the heart rate tracking performance of the forerunner 165 during 4 different types of workouts, we will also compare the sleep stage tracking against an EEG headband that can actually measure my brainwaves, and finally we will take a look at the GPS tracking performance. And, as I said, all of this will be based on actual data analysis, let’s get to it.
Hello everyone, for those of you that are new to the channel, my name is Rob and I am a postdoctoral scientist specializing in biological data analysis. Now, I don’t want to go into the specs of this watch too much, since the focus in my reviews is on actual independent testing of devices. But, there is one thing that bugs me a bit about some Garmin watches, and that includes the Forerunner 165. For some reason, Garmin tends to exclude certain sports profiles and sensor connections from their lower to medium tier watches, and that's also what they did for this watch. So, certain types of sports will not be available on the Forerunner 165, and also certain external sensors, like power meters or Smart Trainers, can not be connected, but this is only possible on the more expensive watches. And I suspect much of this is not really a technical limitation, but just a choice they make to differentiate their watches. Especially for the sports profiles, I imagine it would just be a matter of porting over the firmware from another watch, and it would work fine. So, they are quite likely limiting these watches intentionally. Maybe I am wrong, and the hardware somehow limits these more “low end” watches, like this Forerunner 165, but I suspect it is just a firmware choice. That being said, those relatively small differences would not make me want to pay almost double for for instance the Forerunner 265, and I would still go for this 165 instead. If you want a more detailed comparison, Ray from DC Rainmaker made a nice video about this.

This is the brand new Grit X2 Pro from Polar, which is aesthetically my favorite watch from Polar, and it comes with some exciting news. And this news is not just about the Polar Grit X2 Pro itself, but also about the Vantage V3. The reason is that it concerns a firmware update rather than a hardware change, and this firmware update will come to both the Grit X2 Pro and Vantage V3. In fact, the Grit X2 Pro and Vantage V3 are very similar, having identical electronics and software, with the main difference being in housing and design. In this video I will first concisely describe the new Grit X2 Pro and what it can do. After that I will share some details of how this new algorithm works. Now, I am not allowed yet to test it in this video, but of course we will put it to the test once it actually comes out. Finally, I also discussed with Polar why I was getting relatively bad results with the sensor set in the Vantage V3, which is the same as the Grit X2 Pro, and of course today I’ll also share what we found. Plus, I’ll show some more testing of the Vantage V3, including some quick tests on Theresa, since it turns out I might be the problem. So, let’s get started and talk about the new Grit X2 Pro hardware and firmware.
First off, a disclosure, Polar sent me this sample of the Grit X2 Pro for testing, but they did not have any influence on this video or on my opinion, except for some fact-checks I asked them to do. Also, this video will be a bit different from my normal videos, since we are not allowed to do any testing yet. However, what I can do is show you some graph-drawings that represent how the new algorithm will work. And I can also show you some new testing of the Vantage V3, which has the same electronics. Finally I can share what Polar said when I shared my V3 data with them. However, first, since the Grit X2 Pro was just announced, let me briefly share the 10 most important things to know about the Grit X2 Pro!
Polar is set to release two distinct models within its Grit X2 Pro series: the standard Polar Grit X2 Pro in night black and stone gray, and the premium Polar Grit X2 Pro Titan. The main differences between these models are in materials and aesthetics.

The Fitbit Charge 6 has improved a lot over the Charge 5, at least in some regards, and this mostly seems to have been achieved using software and not hardware improvements. In this video we will be systematically testing the health and sports tracking of the Fitbit Charge 6 to see what its strengths and weaknesses are, to help you decide if the Charge 6 is the right watch for you. Specifically, we will be testing the heart rate tracking performance, comparing the sleep stage tracking to an EEG reference and looking at the consistency of the GPS tracking. Let’s dive in!
The Fitbit Charge 6 looks more-or-less identical to the Charge 5, however, it does seem to have substantially improved. And, as far as I can tell, this is not because of any major change of the internals of this watch, but it seems to be because of better software. By the way, for those of you that are new to the channel, my name is Rob, and I am a postdoctoral scientist specializing in biological data analysis. So let’s get right to those results, and I want to start off by testing the heart rate tracking performance of the Charge 6 during exercise.
OK, what are my conclusions? Well, if you want pretty good heart rate and sleep stage tracking at a reasonable price, the Fitbit Charge 6 is actually a really good choice. I am impressed with what the folks at Google were able to do, with what I think were mostly software improvements. Only the GPS tracking was really disappointing. Not taking into account the GPS tracking, I would give the Charge 6, 4 out of 5 stars. However, given the poor GPS tracking we would have to deduct at least half a star. However, if you do not care about GPS tracking, it is a very solid choice, and given that you can get it on Amazon for around 140 dollars, that’s not bad at all. The main downside of Fitbit Devices in my experience is that they tend to break quite often. Back in the day, a friend of mine went through about 3 to 4 broken Fitbit Ionics, before Fitbit would no longer send replacements. But at the moment both my Charge 6’s are still working, so maybe Fitbit solved that issue.

The Google Pixel Watch 2 continues impressing in 2024, even after testing it for several months. However, compared to my initial review, I have encountered some issues, and today I’ll share all those findings with you. We will systematically test the Pixel Watch 2 on myself for heart rate tracking during different exercises, compare the sleep tracking against EEG and also take a look at the GPS tracking.
The Pixel Watch 2 has a bunch of new sensors, which are supposed to make it better than the original Pixel Watch, but is this actually true? That is what we will test in this video. I tested the Pixel Watch 2 when it came out, and I was generally very positive. In the meantime I have tested it much more thoroughly, comparing it against a sleep EEG device for 12 nights and testing the GPS consistency over 10 bike rides. However, I want to start off by testing the heart rate tracking performance, which I tested during a total of 56 workouts on myself and for 13 workouts on Theresa. And to get a fair set of data, I also retested the original Pixel Watch.
OK, with that out of the way, what do I think of the Pixel Watch 2. Well, I am actually quite happy with how it performed overall. It performed quite well in all the different categories that I tested it in, and seems significantly better than the Pixel 1 in terms of heart rate tracking. It was generally amongst the top performers for heart rate and sleep, though not the actual top performer, which is still the Apple Watch. However, for Android users the Apple Watch is not an option, so the Pixel Watch 2 is quite a good alternative. I personally think the design is not that great for men, and I would have preferred for it to be a bit bigger, but that is very subjective of course. Also, the way Fitbit software is integrated into the watch feels a bit messy, and it doesn’t feel like an integral part of the watch. It is unclear for instance when looking in the menu if you should work out with Fit workout, which seems to be part of Google Fit, or Fitbit Exercise, which is part of Fitbit. But ignoring all that, and just focussing on the health and sports tracking, the Pixel Watch 2 is one of the, if not the, top contender on Android. So, if that’s what you are looking for, I can definitely recommend it. So overall for sports and health, I’d give the Pixel Watch 2: 4 out of 5 stars.

The TicWatch Pro 5 is one of those watches that I think looks really cool, and that some people even comment on when they notice it basically has two different screens: one ultra-low powered one to extend battery life whilst still providing an always on display, and an AMOLED Display for when you actually use it. It’s very clever, but the actual performance of this watch in terms of health and sports tracking is not exactly what I had hoped for. Of course, you should judge yourself based on the data I will share in this video. We will test the heart rate tracking performance during different exercises like running, cycling and weight lifting, and we will also evaluate the sleep stage tracking and GPS consistency. Let’s get to it!
Hello everyone! For those of you that are new to the channel, my name is Rob and I am a postdoctoral scientist specializing in biological data analysis. As you might know, I don’t like listing the specs of watches, for that you can check out the manufacturers website or some other reviewers. In this video I want to focus on independent testing, but first a quick disclosure: MobVoi did send me this watch for free, but I have no obligation to test it, and they did not get to influence or even see the video before release. With that out of the way, let’s get to the testing!
Overall, I’d give the TicWatch Pro 5 between 2 and 2.5 out of 5 stars, but probably closer to 2 stars. Now, I am not sure if MobVoi will ever send me devices again to review, but this is my honest opinion. For the price, you can definitely get better devices. I would rather get a Forerunner 255 for instance if GPS and a good ecosystem was my focus, or if I was on iOS and I wanted a great smartwatch with great tracking, I’d get an Apple Watch SE. If I had a higher budget and I wanted just health tracking, I’d get an Oura Ring, and if I wanted a compromise between health and sports tracking, I like the Whoop Strap. Finally, for cheap and decent sleep stage tracking, I’d probably get a cheap Fitbit.

I quite enjoyed using the Garmin Vivoactive 5, however, after having just finished testing the Garmin Venu 3, it felt slightly underwhelming. At 300 dollars the Vivoactive 5 is significantly cheaper than the Venu 3, which has a list price of 450 dollars. Just seeing the smaller screen of the Vivoactive 5 and knowing it as the older generation sensor, it just felt like I had downgraded. However, what about the sport and health tracking performance, is the Vivoactive 5 similar in performance to the Venu 3, or is the Vivoactive 5 just as capable? That is what we are going to test in the video. First, we will test the heart rate tracking performance during different types of exercises, second we will test the sleep stage tracking against an EEG reference, and third we will take a look at the GPS tracking consistency.
Hello everyone! For those of you that are new to the channel, my name is Rob and I am a postdoctoral scientist specializing in biological data analysis. Like I said, in this video we will test different aspects of the sports and health tracking of the Garmin Vivoactive 5. As regular viewers will know, I don’t like listing the specs of watches, but let’s briefly discuss what this watch can do, and what are the major differences compared to its slightly more expensive brother, the Venu 3. The most important difference for me is the fact that the Venu 3 has a newer heart rate sensor than the Vivoactive 5, which theoretically should improve performance of the Venu 3 over the Vivoactive in specific circumstances. But we will test this of course. The Venu 3 can also control your smart trainer and can connect to power meters, which the Vivoactive 5 cannot do. Also, the Venu 3 has a barometric altimeter, which could help track the number of stairs you climb more accurately for instance. Finally, the bezel around the screen looks significantly bigger on the Vivoactive 5, which is part of the reason it felt like a downgrade to me. OK, those are the most important differences in my opinion. However, what I really care about is performance. Is the Vivoactive 5 just as good as the Venu 3, or is there a noticeable difference? As always, let's start by testing the heart rate tracking accuracy of the Vivoactive 5, and also comparing this against the other watches out there.

Using the CMF by Nothing Watch Pro has been one of the most frustrating experiences I’ve had in a while, and that’s saying something, given that I’ve tested dozens of smartwatches in the last year. Still, there are some things to like about this cheap 69 dollar smartwatch; A watch which I expect many are considering as a cheap Apple Watch alternative. However, as you will see in this video, based on my systematic testing of this watch, I think many of you will be disappointed with the performance of this first smartwatch of CMF by nothing. At least, that is, if you care about the sports and health tracking of this watch. Outside that, the watch does look and feel quite premium for the price. However, you can judge yourself based on the data I will share in this video.
I was quite excited to test the nothing watch, and I bought two of them to be able to collect a lot of data quickly. However, after connecting them with two of my iPhones, I noticed the first big problem I had with the nothing watch pro: none of the sports and sleep data was syncing to either of my iPhones. I could see it on the watch, but it just wasn’t there on the phone. I’d chosen iPhones since I was hoping to sync my data with Apple Health, but not only was this not happening, the data was not even showing up on the Nothing Watch app itself. I tried a bunch of things, and even contacted their help desk. I tried all their tips, but if this didn’t work, they suggested I go to an offline CMF service center.
So, the sleep stage tracking of the CMF Watch Pro just isn’t very good. I at least would not trust it to tell me anything useful about my stages, except perhaps my total time spent in bed. So, if you want anything more complicated than that, just pick another watch. Overall, I’d give the sleep stage tracking of the CMF Watch Pro, 2 out of 5 stars. So, as you might have guessed by now, with the current firmware and app, I am not very happy with the CMF Watch Pro. First of all, my data is locked in an ecosystem with a poorly performing app, and second, the health and sports data it does provide is more or less useless to me. That being said, more subjectively, I do like the design and simplicity of the CMF Watch Pro. And, for the price, it does feel surprisingly premium. It is kind of chunky, which means that it looks quite big on smaller wrists. So, if you don’t care about the health and sports tracking data, this might still be for you, but if you do, I would steer clear. Therefore, overall, I’d give the health and sports tracking of the CMF by Nothing Watch Pro, 1.5 out of 5 stars.

20:03 Final Conclusions, Recommendations and Limitations
The Oura Ring is a better sleep tracker than Fitbit/Google, and all of these are a lot better than the much cheaper Mi Band, or that is at least what this super interesting scientific study claims. In this video I want to discuss with you how the study tested this, what the results were, and what we can learn from this. We will also look at some of the limitations of the testing, and help you decide which sleep tracker is best for you!
The study I am talking about is a recent study published in the "Sleep Health: Journal of the National Sleep Foundation" in December of 2023. Researchers conducted a detailed analysis to evaluate the performance of five wearable sleep trackers, including Oura, Fitbit, and Mi Band, against the gold standard of sleep measurement: polysomnography. Now, Google owns Fitbit, and based on my testing I believe that all new Google products use the same sleep stage tracking as Fitbit products. In my testing the Oura Ring turns out to be a pretty good sleep stage tracker, and so do different Fitbit and Google products. If we look at the overall performance, the Oura Ring might actually be doing slightly better than all Fitbit devices on average, but the difference isn’t huge. The Mi Band on the other hand is a very bad sleep stage tracker in my hands, which means I would only use it for tracking my total time in bed, and nothing more. However, my testing is just done on me, which is quite limiting. This is precisely why it is really interesting that in the study I mentioned they actually tested the performance of these wearables on about 26 men and 34 women between 20-68 years old, so a much more diverse group of people. By the way, for those of you that are new to the channel, my name is Rob, and I am a postdoctoral researcher specializing in biological data analysis. But back to the results, and I want to start off by looking at the cheapest device in their testing, the Mi Band 7.
The most suitable device for you depends on your specific needs and situation. Fitbit devices are generally already quite good, and one of the cheaper options out there that still provide decent quality sleep tracking. I used a Fitbit Charge 2 myself for many years, and this did the job most nights for me. You won’t get all metrics without a premium Fitbit subscription, but the most important ones are there for free. If you have more money to spend, an Oura Ring will likely give you slightly better performance, and Oura also has a great app, which provides the best health overview in my opinion. Which is why it is one of the devices I have been using myself for many years.

Amazfit finally made a watch that doesn’t totally suck! This is the Amazfit Balance, which has the new BioTracker 5.0 PPG sensor, which makes this the first Amazfit device I tested that actually measures my heart rate at least somewhat reliably. It definitely isn’t perfect, but it might just be good enough. In this video we are going to test the heart rate tracking performance of the Amazfit Balance during different types of exercises, and we will additionally test the sleep stage tracking performance and the GPS tracking accuracy of this new Amazfit device. As always, I don’t want to waste your time, so there are timestamps on the timeline. Let’s get started!
Hello everyone, for those of you that are new to the channel, my name is Rob and I am a postdoctoral scientist specializing in biological data analysis. Now, amazfit devices have historically performed terribly in my testing, and like I said, the Amazfit balance is the first watch to break this trend. Sadly, the one thing that Amazfit generally does really well does not reflect back in this watch, namely the nice design of most watches. Amazfit devices generally have quite beautiful screens and a good design, but I personally find the Amazfit Balance quite chunky and not so good looking, However, that is a subjective opinion, and that’s not what you’re here for. Let’s focus on some objective testing instead, and let’s start with the heart rate tracking performance.
The watch is significantly better than anything Amazfit has produced previously. However, it still isn’t that great. It has quite good heart rate tracking for more static exercises, but it struggled for cycling outside and weight lifting. The sleep stage tracking also wasn’t great, but the GPS tracking on the other hand wasn’t too bad. Also, and I know this is subjective, but I really don’t like the way it looks. Amazfit generally does such a good job at making watches with a really nice screen and relatively slim design, and this thing is just a bit too bulky for me. But of course the latter is very subjective. All in all, I would give this watch 3 out of 5 stars.

17:58 Conclusions
I tested 4 different Galaxy Watches in the sleep lab, and the results were very interesting, but also very confusing. In this video I will share all the results, and we will also compare the performance of the Galaxy Watches to other devices like the Apple Watch and the Oura Ring. Some Galaxy Watches actually performed quite decently, however older Galaxy Watches actually did better in my testing, but I suspect this has nothing to do with those older watches doing better overall, but potentially due to all Galaxy watches struggling in particular circumstances. As always, there are timestamps in the description below to not waste your time. Let’s get to it!
Hello everyone, for those of you that are new to the channel, my name is Rob, and I am a postdoctoral scientist specializing in biological data analysis. Now, when the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 and 6 Classic were released, I asked a friend who runs a sleep lab in the Netherlands if I could test them using one of his polysomnography devices. He agreed, and his students were kind enough to help me attach all the electrodes. It took a while to also analyze all the data, but it is here now, and the results are super interesting. I also tested the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 and 5 Pro in a sleep lab here in Austria earlier this year. I have to say though, all results combined are also a bit weird.
For those of you that are not familiar with “sleep tracking”, what does this term mean? In the sleep lab we use a device that measures brain waves, eye movements, heart rate and muscle movements to calculate when you were in light sleep, deep sleep, and REM sleep, and also when you were awake. This is the scientific gold standard, but this is basically impossible to use each night. So, smartwatches and other trackers try to estimate the same stages with much less information, usually based on heart beat measurements and movement data. Over the last few years the algorithms that companies like Apple and Google use have improved a lot, but there are plenty of brands out there that have pretty bad sleep stage tracking. So, let’s see in which camp the galaxy watches fall. Each device was just tested for a single night, so take the results with a grain of salt, but they do potentially reveal an issue with the Galaxy Watch’s sleep tracking.

12:56 Sleep Test : Overview
15:10 Conclusions and Limitations
Out of all sleep trackers I’ve tested, the Polar Verity Sense is the most accurate device I’ve tested so far when compared to the gold standard of sleep tracking! However, you do need a special algorithm to actually get these results, which was developed at the University of Salzburg. In my overview graph of sleep stage tracking, it ends up all the way up here, seemingly even outperforming the Apple Watch, though just slightly. This algorithm is implemented in an app, which I tested in a sleep lab against the gold standard of sleep stage tracking, and it did really well, though of course it still has some issues, as you will see later. Also, though the Polar Verity Sense is quite inexpensive at about 90 dollars, you do need a subscription to the app, which isn’t cheap at about 20 to 25 euros a month. But you can judge yourself if the performance is good enough for you, let’s get to it!
As you might have noticed, I did not mention the name of this app yet, and that’s because it is called Nukkuaaa, which is one of the worst names to advertise on radio, and apparently it means Sleep in Finnish. And, no you’re not crazy, the University of Salzburg is actually in Austria, not Finland. But, name aside, I was able to test this app because Prof. Manuel Schabus, who developed this app, invited me to his sleep lab. They actually also published a scientific paper on the app, but he understood I needed to test it myself so we can see if it is any good. So I proposed to sleep at his lab for three nights and compare the app against the gold standard of sleep stage tracking, and to additionally test the app on Theresa and Chris for another 3 nights total. So in total we have 6 nights of data to work with. In this video, I’ll start by looking at how the Nukkuaa performed on me, so we can also compare its performance to dozens of other devices, and after that we’ll look at Theresa’s and Chris’ data, and finally we’ll take a look at the scientific paper that Prof Schabus and his colleagues wrote. What is important to mention is that the thing that sets the Nukkuaa app apart from the competition, is the personalized sleep coaching, where they try to turn your smartphone and wearable into a home sleep laboratory. In this video I’ll show you my personal favorite devices and products I use for sports, sleep and health. Over the last years I’ve tested many devices, and today I’ll show you which I actually use myself, and I’ll share the updated data and analyses I performed, also on some updates on devices I tested recently. I’ll also discuss some other products I’ve found useful for sports and nutrition, but these are based more on my subjective experience. I also checked in with some of the manufacturers to see if they had Black Friday sales and also long-term affiliate discounts links I could share, and you can find those in the description below. Finally, on a more personal note, I also want to discuss a supplement/medication I started taking about 4 years ago, which only a few people know I take, and which has helped me, but you might think twice before taking this. Let’s get to it!
Hello everyone, for those of you that are new to the channel, my name is Rob and I am a postdoctoral scientist specializing in biological data analysis. I want to start off with the most expensive device that I own, but this is also one of my favorite devices , namely the eight sleep pod 3. Without actually experiencing it myself, it might have been too big of a gamble for me to get, but it is the device that has actually subjectively helped my sleep quality the most, and objectively additionally has great sleep tracking based on my testing. Now, before showing you the sleep tracking performance of the eight sleep pod 3, I do need to mention that I will include affiliate links to some of the products I will show today. As a personal rule, I only accept affiliate programs from products I actually believe are good, and these are all products I have used for a long time.

13:20 Recommendations & Conclusions
Over the last two weeks I’ve systematically tested the heart rate tracking performance of the new Polar Vantage V3, and the results are, well, disappointing to say the least(point). The Polar Vantage V3 is the first Polar watch with the new Generation 4 Optical Heart Rate sensor, so my expectations were high. In this video I’ll share the results of my initial scientific testing, and you can judge for yourself what you think of the results. I tested the Vantage V3 for indoor cycling, outdoor cycling, running and weight lifting for a total of 24 workouts and I’ll share all the results with you.
Hello everyone, for those of you that are new to the channel, my name is Rob and I am a postdoctoral scientist specializing in biological data analysis. In this video I will dive straight into the testing, and you can search for the specs on Polar’s website, so let’s get to it! First a disclosure: Polar did send me this watch for testing, but they did not have any influence on this video, and they did not get to see it before release. But I guess that will become clear when you see how the watch performed on me.
So, this doesn’t look too good for the Polar Vantage V3; for all exercises except weight lifting, the older Polar Watches did better than the Vantage V3 with the new sensor. Yes, some of these other watches are also lighter, but I don’t think that’s the issue here. I was even afraid it might have difficulty with my left wrist for some reason, so I also tried wearing the Vantage 3 on the other arm, and this didn’t make a difference. I hope that the new hardware in the V3 will prove to be superior to the old sensor, and that these are all issues that can be solved with updates over time. We have seen this for other brands. Still, the results I got were really surprising to me. I’ll also be testing the sleep stage tracking and GPS tracking of the Vantage V3, and I’ll share those results in my full review. Also, please watch some other reviewers, since these are just the results I got for my particular physiology.

The Garmin Venu 3 and 3s are surprisingly well-rounded smartwatches, and I would have no problem recommending them to some of my friends. However, my systematic testing did reveal a number of limitations of this watch, and these might be deal breakers for some of you. In this video we are going to scientifically test the heart rate tracking performance, sleep stage tracking accuracy, GPS consistency and oxygen saturation measurements of the Garmin Venu 3. This is the video many of you have been waiting for, so let’s get to it!
Hello everyone, for those of you that are new to the channel, my name is Rob and I am a postdoctoral scientist specializing in biological data analysis. In this video I will dive straight into the testing. However, if you want to find out more about the detailed specs of this watch, Garmin has a very good website that lists all details. The only really important thing to mention is that the Venu 3 has Garmin’s latest generation sensor set. But that’s all I wanted to say before we get to the systematic testing, and I want to start off with the heart rate tracking performance, which I tested on myself with the Venu 3 and on Theresa with the 3s. I tested the heart rate tracking performance during a total of 7 indoor cycling workouts, 3 runs, 21 bike-rides and 10 weight lifting sessions!
But, what is my final conclusion on the Venu 3. Well, I think that it is a solid all-round watch, with pretty good heart rate tracking, decent sleep stage tracking and good GPS tracking. Only the oxygen saturation measurements disappointed me a bit. The Venu 3 also has very good battery life compared to many of the other watches out there, lasting up to 26 days, so it is really a very good all-rounder, but it also doesn’t dazzle with its performance in any particular category. So, taking all of that into account, I’d give the Venu 3: 3.5 to 4 out of 5 stars.

The Mi Band 8 international edition is finally out, meaning I could test it in even more detail than before, and it might be the device I’d recommend to a select subgroup of my viewers. Depending on when and where you get it, this device will likely set you back somewhere between 40 and 60 dollars, and for that price tag it is pretty impressive. In this video we are going to systematically and scientifically test the heart rate tracking and sleep stage tracking of this budget smartband. So, let’s get to it!
Hello everyone, for those of you that are new to the channel, my name is Rob, and I am a postdoctoral scientist specializing in biological data analysis. In this video, let’s skip any more intro, and get right to the testing. If you want to know more about what this watch can do, just check Xiaomi’s website. And I want to start off with the heart rate tracking accuracy. I tested this on myself during 6 indoor cycling sessions, 13 outdoor bike rides and 4 weight lifting sessions. I want to start off by looking at indoor cycling, since this is one of the easiest exercises for a watch to track.
But, what is my final conclusion on the Mi Band 8. Well, I find this a hard one. Just purely based on the tests that I did, it is not that great. It does a few things well enough, but nothing amazing. However, considering the very low price-tag and the fact that the quality of the screen and build is still very good, I am conflicted. If you just want a basic tracker that can track your heart rate quite accurately when you are not moving too much and will roughly keep track of how much time you spent in bed, then the Mi Band 8 is still a smartband I can recommend, specifically because of the low price-tag. It’s not going to come close to the performance of an Apple Watch or Pixel Watch, but you can buy about 10 Mi Band 8’s for the price of one of those. Just looking at the general sleep and heart rate tracking, I would give the Mi Band 8 2.5 to 3 out of 5 stars.

The Fitbit Charge 6 is a lot better than the Charge 5! Over the last few days I’ve done a lot of testing with the Fitbit Charge 6, and I was hoping that the promised improved heart rate tracking is true. And, I am happy to report it does appear to be the case, for the most case, because it did still show some issues. In this video I will show you the results for a first test of the heart rate tracking performance, sleep tracking accuracy and GPS tracking of the Fitbit Charge 6. Let’s get to it!
The Charge 6 supposedly debuts the most accurate heart rate on a Fitbit tracker yet, thanks to an improved machine learning algorithm. Google claims that the heart rate tracking during vigorous activities — like for instance HIIT workouts, spinning and rowing — is up to 60% more accurate than before. Now, as far as I understand this, this means that the sensor set is the same between the Charge 5 and Charge 6, but just the processing of the signals is what is leading to the improvements. And, as I’ll show you in a second, this actually seems to work. There are also a number of other additional features on the Charge 6, for instance you can use the Fitbit Charge 6 as an external heart rate monitor on third-party fitness equipment, which you cannot do with the Fitbit Charge 5. But that’s not why you clicked on this video. You want to check out the heart rate tracking performance of the Charge 6, so let’s get right to the systematic testing.
Back to my final conclusion of the Charge 6. Is it any good? Well, yes. The heart rate tracking actually seems quite good, and seems to have improved significantly compared to the Charge 5. The sleep stage tracking is exactly as I have come to expect from Fitbit, which is pretty good, though I did encounter a small issue. Only the GPS tracking was a bit disappointing. Therefore, overall, I’d preliminarily give the Fitbit Charge 6, 3.5 out of 5 stars. But stay tuned for my full review to see if this holds up with even more testing. Now, I’ve mentioned this in many videos, but depending on your needs, another smartwatch or health tracker might be a better choice. For health tracking, I personally use an Oura Ring and Whoop strap. If I want the best GPS tracking with good battery life, I’d probably pick a Garmin. And for improving my sleep, I use the Eight sleep pod 3.

This might be my new favorite Android smartwatch. Over the last few days I’ve extensively and systematically tested the Pixel Watch 2 for it’s health and sports tracking capabilities. And, I have to say, the Pixel Watch did not disappoint. And, dare I say it, it might even start to compete with the Apple Watch. Though maybe not completely, since I already encountered some issues in the first few days. I performed a first test of the heart rate tracking performance, sleep tracking accuracy and GPS tracking. Let’s get to it!
Hello everyone, for those of you that are new to the channel, my name is Rob, and I am a postdoctoral scientist specializing in biological data analysis. As you might have noticed, I am not in my usual studio, but I am actually visiting my parents in the Netherlands and recording this video from my childhood bedroom. But, back to the Pixel Watch 2. One of the main improvements of the Pixel Watch 2 compared to the first generation Pixel watch is the improved sensor set, which Google says now has more LEDs, which produces a more accurate heart rate reading than ever before, being up to 40% more accurate for vigorous activities like HIIT, spinning and rowing. This is partially due to a new AI heart rate algorithm as well. Of course this is exactly what we want to put to the test. I tested this on myself during 3 indoor cycling sessions, 3 outdoor bike rides, 3 weight lifting sessions and 3 outdoor runs. In a future video I will also test the Pixel Watch 2 on Theresa, who is also wearing one right now. Let’s start with the performance of the Pixel Watch 2 for a relatively easy exercise, cycling indoors.

I didn’t think I would say this, but you might want to think twice about getting the Apple Watch Ultra 2. Or maybe a better wording is that I am personally conflicted about this watch. I have collected a lot of data with the Apple Watch Ultra 2 over the last 10 days, and what bothers me is that it doesn’t seem to be any better, and might even be worse in some cases, than the Series 9, even at things that the Ultra 2 should theoretically be better at. But you can judge yourself based on the data I will show you in this video, and there is plenty of data to share. Specifically, we will be testing the heart rate tracking accuracy of the Ultra 2 on myself and Theresa for a total of 42 workouts, and I’ll test the sleep stage tracking performance with 5 nights of data, we'll be looking at the GPS tracking consistency using 18 bike-rides and we’ll check the oxygen saturation measurements using 100+ datapoints. Let’s get to it!
Hello everyone! For those of you that are new to the channel, my name is Rob, and I am a postdoctoral scientist specializing in biological data analysis. I’ve put the Ultra 2 through some rigorous testing, and the results are super interesting. And to see if a big watch like the Ultra 2 also works on smaller wrists, I tested it on Theresa as well. As you might have noticed, my reviews have gotten quite long recently, so I’ll try to be a bit more concise, but I’ll upload the full results to my website. But, no promises, since I might get carried away and make this a long review anyway. However, first some quick basics about the Ultra 2. How is the Ultra 2 different from the Ultra 1? The screen is significantly brighter, now putting out a max brightness of 3,000 nits compared to the 2000 nits of the Ultra Generation 1.
