Cultural Marxism, the Frankfurt School, and the Culture Industry Leslie Fluette 2020-03-27 | Cultural Marxism is a conspiracy theory parroted by the likes of Jordan Peterson, Ron Paul, even far right terrorist Anders Breivik, most often used to describe the Frankfurt School's supposed plot to subvert western values by promoting multiculturalism, feminism and political correctness. Unfortunately, there's no evidence to suggest there ever was such a plot and was most likely cooked up by right wing zealots to fear-monger and mobilize support against a post-communist left. Capitalist Realism, Mental Illness and Societies of Control Leslie Fluette 2019-04-25 | Capitalist realism is the ambient all pervasive atmosphere where it's just sort of implied that capitalism is all there is. It conditions how we view the world, how we work, our social relations, even our thoughts and behaviors. When it comes to mental health, capitalist realism frames mental illness as purely a biological imbalance in the brain which requires a chemical solution. This feeds perfectly into a neoliberal framework which says YOU the individual are the problem, you OWN this illness. It also feeds into our current society of control which I discuss at length in the video. If we want to truly address the mental health crisis facing the population today we need to reframe the conversation and work to repoliticize mental health by addressing the structural and systemic issues at play which are causing perfectly sane people to become insane. CULTURAL HEGEMONY, POWER AND CAPITALISM Leslie Fluette 2017-11-11 | Hey guys! Today I'm discussing what Antonio Gramsci called cultural hegemony. Antonio Gramsci was a brilliant Neo-Marxist intellectual and one of the founders of the Italian Communist Party. After being thrown in prison during Mussolini's fascist reign, he wrote what later became known as "The Prison Notebooks."Gramsci, along with plenty of others, assumed that after the Russian Revolution socialism would spread throughout Italy and Western Europe and he was perplexed when it didn't happen. So he set out to understand the mechanisms at play that keep people consentintg to and often actively participating in their own exploitation under capitalism. He found the answer to be multi-faceted and talked a lot about cultural hegemony.
