Avante Camaradas - Brazilian Army Song Gukpa 2023-09-21 | "Avante Camaradas" is one of Brazil most iconomic military songs, and it comes with a powerful backstory.Back in the closing years of the fourty one year long oligarchic dictatorship known as the "old republic" a popular uprising overthrew the unelected ruling satrap of the city of São Paulo, Júlio Prestes, who you probably know as the winner of the rigger 1930 election. Such uprising failed to spread and defeat the ruling oligarchy as the country was so underdeveloped that the lack of communication infrastructure allowed the government to keep it isolated, preventing a larger rising. Instead of fighting to the death in a doomed battle of the capital, the rebels succesfully evacuated most of their forces from the capital leaving a token force to resist the returning tyrant who recaptured his golden city after a bloody bombing that left five thousand civilians dead.The force that managed to evacuate the city was named "The first revolutionary division" led by Field Marshall Isidoro Dias Lopez and his second in command, Miguel Costa, someone you can find two videos about him in my channel. The first revolutionary division got reinforced by rebelled forces coming from the south led by Luis Carlos Prestes, a gaúcho commander. Through the space of three years the first revolutionary division fought through the brazilian backlands against the federal army led by Marshall Rondon, through deserts, forrests, swamps, mountains and cities in the largest military march done in history, overpassing both the chinese Long March and Genghis Khan and Alexander the great conquests. Their forces having overwhelming popular support of a people tortured by the leftovers of slavery, neglet and feudalistic opression done by decrepit colonels and corrupted military forces. By 1926 with the situation spirraling out of control the ruling oligarchy elected a reformist, Washington Luís, whose reforms improved the situation enought to allow the column to be seen as less needed, leading it to cross to Argentina in 1927 as political exilees. Isidoro and Miguel Costa would be recalled by Getúlio Vargas in 1930 where they fought in the 1930 revolution, while Luís Carlos Prestes would move to the soviet union where he converted to communism.This song was composed during the civil war known as the "forgotten revolution" as it was sunk by the government after the 1964 coup. The author of the lyrics is unknown, but the melody was composed a few years before by Antônio Manuel do Espírito Santo ( 1884 - 1913 ). In the aftermath of the 1930 revolution the song has been adopted by the brazilian army.

Five years after being removed by a palace coup, he ran and won the presidency becoming Brazil second democratically elected President with 49% of the votes and carrying 17 states plus the DC. As 1951 rolled in he was sworn in and became Brazil 17th president on january 31st, elected on a coalition between the left Varguist PTB and the right varguist PSD parties.As the Carnaval of 1951 rolled in, Brazil most famous singer Francisco Alves recorded this song, "Retrato do Velho" (portrait of the old man), about Vargas victory where he made references for people to return their Vargas portraits back to their home, as many supporters had their own Vargas portraits in their own houses.The history of the song didn't end there, though, as in 2010 a brazilian channel uploaded the song and called it as the jingle of Getúlio Vargas, trigering an internet myth about it. This song came after the election, it had nothing to do with it and it doesn't even cites the event, it was not comissioned by Vargas nor by any supporter, being composed organically. When Vargas heard it for the first time he got a little upset, since even though he was in his late 60s, he still didn't consider himself a old man.

Alegria, Alegria - Brazilian anti dictatorship song Gukpa 2022-04-12 | On the aftermath of the 1964 coup that ended the populist republic, Brazil was thrown into a 21 year long dictatorship led by a combination of right wing army officers and conservative politicians, known as the "regime militar". While recent events reenergized the image of the dictatorship, the regime was met with indiference by the local population and by rejection by groups aligned with the old political order like the Varguist "Nationalist Revolutionary Army", the far left radical MR-8, the communist PCBR and the popular front ALN. History tell us that Waldyr was at his home when a friend bought a small child during a visit, so to distract the child he began to improvise a song that eventually turned out to be "Brasileirinho". The first recording was released in 1949, and it is the one present in this video.This musical rhytm is called "choro". Waldyr Azevedo (1923 - 1980) was a pioneer who removed the cavaquinho from its role as a mere accompanist in choro and placed it in prominence as a solo instrument, exploring the instrument's potential in an unprecedented way.
A menina presidencia - 1938 election song Gukpa 2022-03-21 | As 1937 rolled in, the expectations were growing for the first fully democratic presidential election in Brazilian history, and this song reflected a growing sense of certainty that in some way Getúlio Vargas would remain in power. Sung by Silvio Caldas, "A menina presidência" proposes that the 1938 election would have two candidates, Oswaldo Aranha for the varguists and Armando Salles de Oliveira for the conservatives, a close shot as Armando was confirmed, but Vargas appointed José Américo de Almeida as his candidate instead and Plínio Salgado also began his campaign hoping to be elected in that year.While the song failed to get the correct candidates, it's prevision about Vargas did turn into reality as in november 10th 1937, he denounced an ploy by oligarchs of São Paulo led by Armando and claimed that they would rig the following election, and cancelled it plunging Brazil in the eight year long New State dictatorship.
