Drifting Clouds Rarrandharr, the second single from the most chill band in Arnhem Land: Drifting Clouds.

Unlike western idea of the four seasons, Yolngu divide the year into six distinctive seasons: Gunmul, Mayaltha, Miḏawarr, Dharratharra, Rarranhdharr, Dhuluḏur. Each season has different weather properties and guides what food to be hunted, which flowers are in bloom and which fruits are ready to eat.

Rarrandharr is the hot and dry season, simply known as the dry season by Balanda (non-Yolngu). This song is about the end of the dry season and moving on to colder, wetter climate. Guyula is also thinking about loved ones and saying goodbye to those who have passed away, as the chorus calls out to grandfathers, grandmothers, mother and child.

While on tour in Melbourne penned down the song in December 2025, which is the end of Rarrandharr. From the other side of the country and a long way from family and home, Guyula draws the link between the changing seasons and the circle of life.

Wulma (meaning thunder clouds) is the direct line of ancestry of the Guyula clan, and other people that speak Djambarrpuyngu. ‘When you see the first thunder cloud, you know that the new season is arriving. Saying goodbye to Rarrandharr.’

Bawuypawuy - Drifting Clouds (Single)

Drifting Clouds 2025-06-05 | Bawuypawuy is the debut release of Drifting Clouds, the solo project of Yolngu musician Terry Guyula. The song is a modern adaptation of a millennia old Songline passed from generations, blending tradition with Guyula’s eclectic musical style. Guyula sings in his first language: Liyawulma’mirr-Djambarrpuyngu, a language of Yolngu Matha, the lyrics describe a traditional Songline of the sea, waves and currents become stronger, rough and tough in Arnhem Bay (Gupawupa). The music transcends into euphoria as an airy saxophone soars over an infectious groove like a seabird gliding over the ocean, glued together with Guyula’s dreamy vocals and musical prowess.
