Tony Anderson - Sierras Tony Anderson 2024-05-09 | Sierras. The word simply means "hills" or "mountains." In the great plains of the United States, the farmland is our ocean. The swells and undulating landscape flow like waves. I played the piano with delicacy in this piece - pushing and pulling without any timing requirement; recording it was like breathing.Sierras is another piece of my forthcoming album. I don't have a release date for the full body of work, and I likely will not set one simply because I'm enjoying the relaxed process of finishing one piece at a time and then going with my intuition on which one needs attention next. Unlike past albums which had hard release deadlines, I am de-pressurizing the process with Niobrara (the name of this current album) and also the second album, which will follow.Thanks for all of your support. I have a suspicion the next piece will have my singing / vocals on it like Fields of Green did.The photo was taken in the mid 1990s by my Grandmother. She was an excellent film photographer and would wait each evening for the sunset on her farm in Nebraska. That's her barn in the left side of the frame. Tony Anderson - Ancestral Tony Anderson 2024-04-11 | As part of my forthcoming album, I wrote Ancestral to help me sleep.The photo was taken near my Grandmother's farm outside of Hooper, Nebraska. Her name was Kaye Benson and she's the one who convinced my parents to leave south Florida in the late 1980s to experience life in the heartland. Her home (and the land it was on) continues to be idyllic each time I return. Many of my favorite memories from childhood took place there, and the nostalgia continues to draw me back even though she's gone. What I love remembering most is how quiet things would get on summer nights. Perhaps that's what Ancestral is so simple. So soft.I recently found a letter Grandma Kaye wrote my parents in January of 1990 just after my mom and dad had taken 4 of us kids (all under the age of 5) to Nebraska for the first time:"David and Ariane, I saw you walking hand in hand down the front lawn and later far out into the fields. Tony Anderson - Meadowlark Tony Anderson 2024-03-21 | Meadowlark is my ambient interpretation of Fields of Green, which just released as a three song single. I put Meadowlark together at Elgise Saint Sulpice in Paris last fall - a cathedral I often visit to reflect and write. As one of my favorite acoustic spaces in the world, the reverberated textures in the song mirror what I was hearing inside of Saint Sulpice that day. I suppose the "meadowlark" is the vocal line that cuts through the wall of ambience. Tony Anderson - Fields of Green Tony Anderson 2024-03-14 | Fields of Green is the next single from my new album. I've started to write lyrics and record my own voice from time to time and Fields of Green is the first piece I've worked on that I felt needed words rather than instruments to say what I wanted to say. Tony Anderson - Niobrara Tony Anderson 2024-01-31 | I've got a new album coming, and Niobrara is the next single from it. Niobrara is a Ponca & Omaha Indian word translating to "running water," or sometimes "wide water." Niobrara is a village, a river and a region in northeastern Nebraska. The river itself is an offshoot from the Missouri River, which separates Nebraska from South Dakota. In the last three years, it's become a spiritual thin place for me and I've done quite a bit of my writing there. The area has almost no noise or light pollution and has become a haven for wildlife. Bison still roam the hills and bald eagles hunt the riverbanks while red winged blackbirds fill the summer evening air with their sunset chorus. It's still relatively untouched land. I visited the place as a child, but returning there as a man has been important for me. It's hard to explain exactly why I've been pulled back there - back to Nebraska in general; Niobrara in specific, but I've been following my intuition and it's been beautiful to watch the music flow - like a river. Like running water. And so the entire album will share the name of this song: Niobrara.Thank you to the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska. Tony Anderson - Rise (Snowfall Remix) Tony Anderson 2023-12-15 | The snowfall remix of Rise was written in 2012. I was unmarried at the time, and music hadn't become my full time job just yet. Any music I produced had to be recorded after my normal workday was finished. I'd stay up late into the early hours of the morning with no other goal than to write something that brought me joy. That particular winter, Kentucky got lots of snow. The soft, quiet kind. Outside of my little studio window I'd often see it falling and gently coating the world outside as I worked. Each layer making everything more and more quiet. Tony Anderson - Heirloom Tony Anderson 2023-11-10 | I returned to my childhood home in rural Nebraska in October of 2021. It had been nearly 25 years since my parents sold the house and moved our family out of state. I didn't know what to expect upon returning after so many years, and being in the countryside it was no surprise to discover the home had been abandoned. My guess is that nobody had cared for the place (or the 6 acres of farmland it was on) for more than 20 years based on the decay I witnessed. Entering the home was one of the most surreal moments of my life. The memories flooded back - the home had been suspended in time. Mold and rot consumed most of the structure, but even amidst the decay, the layout was identical. It was completely silent. Outside, the warm October wind carried chaff from nearby fields being harvested in through the open window I had shattered to get inside. Everything around me was alive. I felt as if this forgotten home had been waiting for someone to come back. To love it again. A decomposing upright piano was leaned up against the front porch outside...the same porch my father built in 1996. With its strings exposed, I recorded a few notes. In the months following my visit, I listened back to what I had captured and realized I had sampled notes in the same key as the song I wrote for my mother (Ariana) in 2019 following her death. I had been looking for something of hers on the property when I broke in - something physical to remind me of her. I never did, but the recordings were more than enough.I've since returned to Nebraska - its cities and small towns - a handful of times over the last few years while writing my forthcoming album. All of the music I'm developing flows from the places, the people and the memories of my childhood in small town America in the 1990s. And so this song - Heirloom - is the first of many that are my way of bringing you close into the most formative and beautiful years of my life. The photo was taken in our kitchen. Some of my favorite moments of my childhood were in this room. My mom would cook, clean, sing and sometimes throw furniture when she got really angry. She was complex, and we all loved her for it. Today's selection is "The King."I wrote The King (2016) as part of a score for a film called "The Heart of Man." I had about 8 weeks to write 75 minutes of music for the film - it was one of the tightest deadlines I've ever worked under...especially because we had already booked a recording date with the orchestra in Bratislava, Slovakia before I started writing."The King" was composed for a scene towards the end of the film, and since I had written the score chronologically from the first scene to the last, the music in The King ended up being the culmination of all of the themes and melodies of the entire film up until the point it played. It's simple and distilled. Today's selection is "Eyes Wide Open."I wrote Eyes Wide Open in 2014 as a favor to a friend who asked me to score his short film. I remember spending 2 solid weeks on the music and thinking it was the biggest waste of time I'd ever committed to simply because the music felt so similar throughout - monotonous. I played the score for a few friends to get their opinions - perhaps I was wrong about my judgment... One of them fell asleep while listening and the other interrupted the music to tell me about his day. Things were not looking good...I told Brooke (now my wife) I needed her help recording some vocals - something to lift the whole thing...and I'm glad she said yes - there's so much life in her voice. A week later I was visiting friends in Seattle and I recorded a small cello ensemble there - the strings brought out an entirely new dimension.It's not until now - 9 years later - that I can listen back and appreciate the little details in this piece...details that I wish were present in my current music. I sometimes wonder what's happened to my writing - "have I fallen asleep?" Eyes Wide Open was simply me having fun. When I hear it, I smile. Tony Anderson - Rise Tony Anderson 2023-06-19 | Until my new music is released later in 2023, I want to share some of my older work on Mondays and Fridays. Today's selection is "Rise."Rise (2012) was written for Salomon Ligthelm's short film "Where is Your Wilderness." I loved putting it together for the film and collaborating with my now lifelong friend Luke Atencio in the process. I had a lot of freedom when writing this piece - from the use of ocean waves to the ambient pads and bit crushed drum performance - I felt like I was making music that was an expression of me for the first time.Funny enough, after writing Rise, I realized I had lifted its chord progression from a song my dear friend Adam Taylor had recently released. These chords are common in hundreds of songs, but I didn't realize I had replicated Adam's creation through osmosis. Not only did Adam forgive me, but he befriended me - and his love and friendship has changed my life. Tony Anderson - Skyline Tony Anderson 2023-05-19 | Skyline is a love letter to Los Angeles.My friend Dennis Hamm is a phenomenal composer and keyboard player (Thundercat, Flying Lotus, Knower, Alice Smith). I played him my initial version of this song on the piano one night and asked him to help me break it out of its prison - my playing tends to be predictable and very "on the grid." Skyline, at that point, was pretty lifeless. Dennis' playing is quote the opposite - full of color, unpredictable rhythms and spontaneous movement. Skyline is what emerged. Dennis recorded a single take at my upright piano while I moved the mics around and we kept that original recording. He came in earlier this year with his Nonlinear Labs C15 synthesizer and we embedded his synth material intricately within the piano recording. I couldn't resist topping the track off with the Prophet 10 from Sequential. So here we are...Finally, a word on recording. I've been trying, for many years, to get a piano to sound as good recorded as it does when I actually sit down to play it. This is as close as I've come so far. AEA 440s were a big part of this. They are some of the largest ribbon microphones in production, and capture the sound pressure of the piano beautifully. I combined a stereo pair of 440s with 3 condenser microphones - a Mojave MA-200 and a stereo pair of Mojave 201 FETs. So this recording is a collaboration of 5 microphones. The ribbons picked up a large amount of low end and low midrange material, and I left it all in there simply because removing it thinned out the overall sound. Debris | 9/11 Film Tony Anderson 2022-09-09 | Debris is a 25 minute film made in collaboration with the National September 11th Memorial and Museum. This documentary tells the story of September 11th, 2001 using bystander footage, source audio and newly composed music. Some of what you'll see may seem familiar - but certain events in Debris have rarely been viewed by the public. I've spent the last handful of years finding what I believe to be some of the most important footage of that day in order to preserve the memory of this day for future generations. Youtube has decided to restrict this film because of the nature of the subject material. This is interesting since hundreds of million of people saw the attacks live on television 21 years ago. Please be assured that my team and I took great care in omitting far more intense moments of the attacks that could have been perceived as exploitative, shocking or salacious. Most of what you'll see and hear in this film is recovered film and audio from the day of the attacks in lower Manhattan, Washington DC and Shanksville, PA. This documentary is not designed to shock, re-traumatize or entertain. It is simply an audible record of the day - a time capsule to hold history in place for coming generations. -----The 9/11 attacks killed 2,977 people - the single largest loss of life resulting from a foreign attack on American soil. Under the Heavens | Writing Session Tony Anderson 2022-02-04 | While filming for more studio tour stuff, the guys captured me playing through some of my new songs. Under the Heavens emerged from this writing session in real time - we didn't plan any of this. My favorite things to watch are documentaries on how things are made, and I'm always looking on YouTube for behind the scenes of the artists that inspire me because I want to know how people work and what they're like, so I thought putting this out might be fun. It's honest, raw and identical to how I think and talk to myself when nobody is there watching. None of the audio is time or pitch corrected in any way.
