Rayman TPLS TSR v3.1 – Candy Château Showcase
updated
I was thankful for the glitch, but didn't understand it until years later when I saw this video: youtu.be/DetL1U5CVAA What happened was, my Ting count was 49, so collecting the fiftieth Ting gave me a new life, and cancelled the insta-kill effect of the red spiky ball!
I recreated the scenario by firing up the game, using the "[TAB] finishing" cheat to skip to the required level, and using the Dosbox debugger to modify the Ting and Life counts in memory.
* The answer is wrong because you're supposed to pick numbers where the units are strictly less than the tens, whereas I had picked 33 becuase 3 ≥ 3. Silly me!
I was inspired to upload this after reading today's xkcd (xkcd.com/2782), which muses about the possibility of a seagull named after Meryl Streep and/or multiple incidents involving Meryl Streep and a seagull. Naturally this reminded me of the story of a crane named after Frasier Crane, and the ensuing incidents…
Oscar Blaketon comes around to Claude Greengrass's house to have a word about the coal that mysteriously showed up in his shed. Greengrass responds asking which "Cole" he could possibly mean…
A mind-bending utterance from Claude Jeremiah Greengrass at the beginning of the Heartbeat Season 5 finale, "Blood Sports".
I had to listen to this clip about half a dozen times, and write it down, before realizing that this is more or less a grammatical sentence, and that it does in fact carry the intended meaning!
The sound still seems a bit gammy (even apart from the whole 8-bit thing!), but I'm sure that's nothing to do with Wayland.
Note however that the Rayman 2 recording I uploaded earlier tonight was done on i3 (i.e. X11, not Wayland) since I can't make Rayman 2 work outside of native X…
Note that the in-game timer says 01'44"28, but that's unreliable, since it counts only 990 or 960 milliseconds to the second (depending on where you are in the level) – see here for further info: raymanpc.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=1431067#p1431067
Basically, I transferred all the missing sprites (ETA/DES files) from Rayman 1 to Designer, using a function which is already available in upstream Ray1Map, then messed around to place Skops himself in the first Cave level.
Firstly, the palette is messed up, but that's to be expected, since Designer can't use as many palettes as Rayman 1. Secondly, he clearly doesn't work properly. Not sure if that's because there's code checking for the right level, or just because his code was completely removed from Designer (the latter is possible).
Please note that the Ray1Map is looking for someone with Unity experience to help out with the UI!
I couldn't plant a seed this time – changing tile types (e.g. to make an area seed-plantable) in the editor is quite hit and miss right now.
I edited the map using Ray1Map (github.com/Adsolution/Ray1Map), a fantastic new tool worked on by RayCarrot, Droolie, Adsolution and Ryemanni. I also couldn't have done this without bugging RayCarrot on RaymanPC (raymanpc.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=89&t=31051&start=20) what felt like every five minutes with questions about the tool! :P Thanks RayCarrot!
Embarrassingly, I failed to beat my own boss the first time, so there's some 8x speed-up to avoid pointless repetition. I feel I can detect some superficial resemblance between the speeded-up Betilla's Garden theme, and the theme from the Big Bang Theory… Never mind!
Might have been more appropriate in December or January, but I didn't get around to it till now (Saint Patrick's weekend + coronovirus lockdown…).
I have no idea what they did with the lights in the original, but I hope I've at least come close to replicating the shining on the fully-formed logo. I didn't even attempt the shining on the "wigga-wigga" bit at the start…
Link to Blend file: vigovproductions.net/wigga-wigga-2020.blend – please feel free to mess around with it, possibly get the lighting to look more like the original!

This is a strange glitch I found in part 2 of the Menhir Hills many years ago. It's so odd that until I tried it again today I wasn't sure whether or not I'd dreamed it! But no, here it is, if you turn the shell around, you end up with your health bar draining, apparently to minus infinity! It's a fate worse than Try Again, since you need to quit the game and lose all your progress!
Of course, I could just move the level-transition entity to the Echoing Caves to a more accessible location, but, uh, where's the fun in that? :P
Sorry that I mucked up the sound levels on the voiceover, but the basic ideas are fairly simple: a plum that binds to a Gorilla Pirate will not necessarily bind to a post, and the plum that falls off posts can be delayed indefinitely from doing so, by jumping on it.
If you're wondering about my setup, I've got a Windows 10 Virtual Machine on Linux, which I was using via a VNC connection for RayTwol. My desktop environment is GNOME and my UI language is Irish (just for fun!). The copy of Rayman 2 on Linux was able to "see" RayTwol's changes because I had mounted the Levels folder from Windows on Linux using CIFS. I didn't run R2 inside the virtual machine because 3D over VNC is for the most part painful, and getting an old game like R2 to work with Steam "in-home streaming" is even more painful.
It turns out that that hypothesis is completely incorrect. In actual fact each plum-tree is tied to a certain *behaviour* with respect to posts. The first plum in the secret area is programmed to attach to a post and stay there as long as it exists. The second plum is programmed to attach, then quiver and fall off. No other plum in the game is programmed to do anything in relation to posts.
The other experiment I did was getting rid of the plum spawned after defeating the mini-Jano. After seeing the invisible wall during the first experiment, I assumed the same thing would happen here. But it didn't! It turns out that the tree in the mini-Jano's cave is a plum-tree, albeit a fairly bare-boned one.
When you think about it, it looks like the mini-Jano itself was a fruit of that tree, that got corrupted in some way. Plums and mini-Janos are quite similar. They're roughly the same size, and they're both bouncing little round yokes…
Speaking of text popups, maybe I'd have been better off doing a voiceover. I'm not really in the mood for it today though, so you'll have to make do with this for now!
Actually, that thing I tried at the end was indeed something I hadn't tried before, but again, the result didn't surprise me.
This was quite a quick and hitchless video, almost failing to do justice to the grand finale. Still, that finale would do itself a lot more justice if it didn't show a shot from a camera angle such that the player character clearly should have been visible, in which he was nowhere to be seen.
More Tlālōque are fought, using a few gameplay mechanics that haven't been seen since much earlier in the game, which is kind of strange. It feels kind of thrown together, and yet when you consider it from a story perspective it makes sense. You light up a torch to open the "forbidden place", for example. Well of course you do, why wouldn't you?
Anyway, secret names:
– Ixtlilton - god of medicine. Ironic since this guy's kingdom crumbled due to an incurable plague. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ixtlilton
– Omacatl - I could be sure we met this one before, but apparently not. Anyway, this is a god associated with many things. The most notable in this context are probably war, strife and discord. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omacatl
– Cipactonal - god of astrology and calendars, counting down the days till the return of the Ball! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cipactonal
Anyway, this level is the first part of Cahua (Náhuatl for "release" or "let go", but I have a bit of fun with other meanings in the video), the infernal factory and inner sanctum of the aliens. The factories are guarded by several Tlālōque, who are a lot less friendly than mythology would suggest!
Unfortunately, as in Oztoc I, I failed to find two secrets. There are overlay titles in the parts where I missed them, explaining what I should have done. (The timing of the titles is quite imprecise, and I apologize, but more fine-grained control would involve something like OpenShot or Pitivi, neither of which seem to understand the concept of limiting the bitrate!)
Secret names:
– Mextli - God/goddess of the moon/night. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mextli
– Toci - "Mother of the gods". en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toci
– Obviously I don't know what the other two are!
Sorry I couldn't continue the tradition of getting the whole level in one video, this was due to circumstances beyond my control. Still, after Oztoc I, I wasn't really in the mood for another hour-long video.
Guys, I did it! I bloody got 6/6 secrets in Hue(h)ca!!! Now if only I could've obtained the same success rate back in Oztoc I… Maybe if I'd split the video, I'd've been more alert…
Secret names:
– Atlatonan… Well, according to one website she's a goddess of deformities and disease, which would make sense based on the awful curse she's quoting. http://www.godslaidbare.com/pantheons/aztec/atlatonan.php
– Nahual, more regular spelling of Nagual. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nagual
Anyway, we enter the intimidating world of Hue(h)ca and after some phaffing around, get ⅔ of the way through it, both in terms of normal and secret progress! This level happens to have my favourite music in the whole game.
Sorry I couldn't continue the tradition of getting the whole level in one video, this was due to circumstances beyond my control. Still, after Oztoc I, I wasn't really in the mood for another hour-long video.
Secret names:
– Atlacoya, goddess of drought.
– Camaxtli, life-death-rebirth deity. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xipe_Totec
– Ometeotl, dual cosmic energies, responsible for the creation of all people. Note how this person claims that the Tepētl Nation is tearing itself in two (duality). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ometeotl
– Atlacoya again! She speaks twice in this level!
Though I didn't notice the achievement until reviewing the video to see the secret names:
– Cipactli - primæval sea monster. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cipactli
– Chicomexochtli - apparently a god of artists.
– Huixtocihuatl - goddess of fertility and saltwater. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huixtocihuatl
– Atlaua - water god, fisher and archer. A strange spelling variant, one would expect Atlahua, which is indeed the variant given at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlaua
Secret names:
– Chantico - goddess of fires and volcanoes. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chantico
– Amimitl - another name for Opochtli, who appeared in Oztoc I
– Tlaltecuhtli - an Earth god(dess). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tlaltecuhtli
– Nagual - Spanish word for a magician capable of turning into an animal. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nagual
The Let's Play continues into the second part of Oztoc, which again means "into the cave". This bit, in which we meet the mysterious "King", goes a lot more smoothly than the previous bit, and I successfully obtain all four secrets!
Secret names:
– Ahuitzotl - Eighth Aztec leader. This is the first to refer to a person rather than a deity! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ahuitzotl
– Temazcalteci - goddess of steam baths. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temazcalteci
– Chalchiuhtlatonal - god of water, which is appropriate since we find this secret in a flooded chamber! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chalchiuhtlatonal
– Tonatiuh - sun god, ruler of Tollan, heaven. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonatiuh
Unfortunately I failed to find the last two secrets. So, the "Master Explorer" Steam achievement remains out of my reach. Still, I fully intend to get "Explorer", which entails finding half of all secrets.
The audiovisual quality has improved to an extent, but I think I could do a bit better. BTW, I happen to have bricked the phone I used to record the audio, so it might be a while before I can make the next part!
Also, yesterday I tried to make a version of this video with overlay text using the YouTube Video Editor, but it completely screwed up the video. I would use annotations, but the annotation editor doesn't seem to like any browser I'm prepared to use.
Secret names:
– Mixcoatl - god of hunting - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mixcoatl
– Centeotl - god of maize - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centeotl
– Opochtli - god of hunting and fishing - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opochtli
– Patecatl - god of healing and fertility - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patecatl
I don't know what the other two names are (the ones I missed). Here's where I went wrong.
– At about 54:00, I should have doubled back and gone along the track. I guess I was despairing too much for that to occur to me.
– At about 56:45, I started exploring to the left of the village, when I should have tried the right!
I apologize for the video and audio quality. The second video has already been recorded, and let me say that these aspects will drastically improve. So, as I say, this is the shortest video, so don't judge me on the audiovisual quality yet!
Also, the secret names:
– Macuilxochitl - god of art, games, beauty, dance, song, flowers - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xochipilli
– Paynal - god serving as a representative of a more powerful god - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Painal
– Ehecatl - a god of wind - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ehecatl
– Citlalicue - goddess who was involved in creating the Earth, stars, and death and darkness - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citlalicue
(This may be one of the best-preserved exemplaries of this logo combo in existence)
This is the 1995 Buena Vista Television logo, cross-fading to the Buena Vista International logo. It comes from the "101 Dalmatians" episode "Tic Track Toe/Lucky All-Star", which is the second episode that ran in first-run syndication.
The music is extremely high-tone (I would say it's a full tone higher, rather than the expected semitone for PAL speedup). I've heard it before, but I'm not sure where.
Also, the music is horrendously off-sync, so it looks like a bad plaster job. In fact, the previous week, they showed the first syndicated episode, and it had the same logos but silent.
This is the full credits from episode 2x04 ("Happy Holidays, Mr. Gruff / The Grandfather Show"), the same episode as in my video: youtube.com/watch?v=G_Ou_Kv_FK4
It's finally here! The first ten minutes or so of the game, as Gaeilge!
I guess it's been almost a year since I first talked about doing a translation of Rayman 2 into Irish. Even though it's been almost that long since MixerX released his game text modification tool on the Rayman Pirate-Community - http://raymanpc.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=9640&p=921480#p921472 - it was only last week that I finally got around to doing most of the translation work.
But now it's done! After a test run today to make sure all the text flows properly, the translation is now in a release-worthy state. So on the off-chance that any Irish speaker owns Rayman 2 on PC and is watching this, here is the download link:
http://www.vigovproductions.net/R2Gaeilge.zip (installation instructions in Readme.txt)
Naturally, credit goes to Drolpiraat for ripping the music, and to Billy Martin for composing it!
Now get down on your knees and repent!
Didn't quite manage to get to my old record, but I think I've done enough to prove that it's possible with the game running at normal speed. (And it seems it has already been beaten)
Je n'ai pas réussi à refaire mon ancien record, mais je pense que j'ai fait suffisamment pour prouver que c'est possible alors que le jeu tourne à la vitesse normale. (Et il semble qu'on l'a déjà battu)
(Also, yeah, M-deCle is me. If the name is familiar to you that might be a surprise, or something you suspected all along. Or you probably don't give a toss!)
And I don't know why it displayed the US flag next to my name, I guess something happened to my save when my VM crashed earlier on.
I was able to get 34 seconds before, but the game was laggier then and I'm having trouble proving to myself that it's possible at normal speed. Will upload as soon as I've been able to do it.
J'ai pu le faire en 34 secondes, mais le jeu tournait plus lentement alors, et j'ai du mal à prouver que c'est possible à la vitesse normale. J'uploaderai dès que j'aurai pu le faire.
As far as I know, this never existed, because Agents of SHIELD changed to a cheap yellow version when the music appeared. Requested by Garrett Simmers.
This video has the ABC Studios logo cross-fading to the Buena Vista International logo (with its aspect ratio doctored by yours truly) and uses the Walt Disney Television (Animation) jingle.
And I must say, it looks pretty good! Thanks for the great suggestion, Subzero!
The whole credits sequence is in this video, but the logo is obviously at the end.
-------------------------------------
Zut !
This shows the Jano chase in the second part of the Cave of Bad Dreams, when the PC version of Rayman 2 is played in a resolution above 640*480 - his jaws don't fill the screen properly!
Sorry for the sync issues and skipping. I hope the video at least gets the point across.
There are a few other observations from the Cave of Bad Dreams in the video as well.
