I have always felt that my students should be able to leave their first lesson with either the ability to play some beats, or at least an understanding of what they need to work on in order to play those beats. This course is all about understanding the information on the music and transferring it to your limbs, or in other words reading and coordination, so that we can get you on that drum set!
This first video will get you on the drums and working out your coordination with some quarter note beats.

This song was really fun for me because it’s so different from what I usually play. I immediately got jazzy vibes but also got a New Orleans-ish vibe, which I don’t think is accurate but that’s where my head went. The snare parts came from the New Orleans bit. After I recorded my part I asked Ryan how he would classify this song and he said “cheeky Beatles type thing.” As soon as he said it I saw it, but I didn’t approach the song with that mindset at all, which is so interesting to me. We all bring our own influences and that’s what makes this so fun.

This song was pretty straight forward for me. I knew what I was going to play pretty immediately, except for the bridge, but after messing around with the bridge I wound up going with the most straight forward part after all. Sometimes that’s all it needs. Something I did have to adjust for were the snare hits within my groove that I play as right-left. Originally they were left hand ghost notes while my right hand continued playing the ride or hi-hat but after recording a take I realized my mic isn’t positioned in a way that can capture the ghost notes so I had to switch to the two handed version so that they were loud enough. Easy fix though and didn’t really affect the groove at all!

It’s always hard when you legitimately don’t think a song needs any drums. It’s even harder when that song was written specifically for you to put a drum part to. That’s life I guess. I’ve been rewatching Peaky Blinders to get ready for the new season and have really been enjoying the music in it. The traditional type songs are great, but the background music has really been catching my attention. This song gave me soundtrack vibes, so I decided to approach it in more of a percussionist mindset than a drumset mindset. I didn’t want my part to sound like a drumset part, I just wanted to support the song without getting in its way. You can decide if I accomplished that or not but that’s how I approached it.

When Ryan sent this to me all he said was “Moon Tooth vibes” and that was all I needed. (Moon Tooth is a band, check them out, they’re cool). I hadn’t had my double pedal set up in probably over a year but this song presented some opportunities for it so I decided to bring it out (headphones recommended for listening by the way). I struggled coming up with something for the intro but it all fell into place the day I recorded it. I also struggled with the second half of the guitar solo.. The song repeats what I would call the chorus during that part, so I kept playing my chorus part for it. The problem was that after the solo ends it goes back into the chorus, so my part was starting to sound stale and repetitive. I was pretty stumped on it, but my student Michael sent me his version and I decided to break my rule of not having any outside influences and watched his before I finished mine. He plays a part on the floor tom that I thought sounded really good, and I decided to take that idea and put my own stamp on it for the second half of the guitar solo and it worked really well. So thanks dude! Since the point of these is to be influenced by each other’s parts, I’m going to start posting my videos when they’re ready instead of waiting until the 1st of each month. If you want to wait until you’re done with yours to watch it, cool. But if you’re feeling stuck and want some ideas, everyone’s videos are added as I receive them to the playlist for each month, so check them out!

Hitting you with a 6/8 track this month! The intro/chorus parts came easy enough, had to feel the verses out for a little bit though. After I settled on it I realized it’s almost identical to a 6/8 part I played in my first band. Back then I had no experience playing in anything other than 4/4 so it was all about using my ears and following the music. That bit at the end of the second verse probably isn’t the most appropriate thing to play, but I felt like having some fun so I went for it haha.

I normally don’t love this style of music with the Green Day triplet vibe but this song was super fun to play. I didn’t overthink it- I listened to it enough to know it, came up with a basic part in my head, went to my drums and ran through it a few times, and then recorded it in one take. Bam.

I told myself that I wasn’t going to wait until the end of the month to do this one, but that’s exactly what I did haha. Luckily for me I found the song to be pretty straightforward (that does not mean that you should have had the same experience). All it needed was for me to sit back and keep a beat going. Like a lot of you, I got a latin vibe from this one that screamed for the ride cymbal, and to me my ride sits SO PERFECTLY with this song that I didn’t want to do anything to take away from it being the focus, I just wanted to hear it. Some of you talked to me throughout the month about trying to find latin beats that could work, and I responded by saying that instead of trying to copy a beat you don’t know, you should apply the vibe you’re getting from the song in the best way you know how to. This song gave me laid back latin vibes, and I worked that into my part just by playing 8th notes on the ride. I didn’t go more latin because Ryan included a tambourine part on 2 and 4 which told me not to fight it, keep the snare there. So that’s what I did.

A lot of students were concerned about being too repetitive with their parts for this song, and I get it. We all want people to be entertained and think we’re good. BUT HAVE YOU EVER HEARD DISCO?? There’s a reason they use “that” beat haha. It works. Sometimes doing too much can disservice the song. In the end it’s all up to the artist, but don’t be afraid to repeat yourself if the song is screaming for it. As drummers, it’s our job to hold it down. Sometimes that means taking a back seat and just playing “that” beat.
And then when the song calls for something else and you change it up, that part hits SOOO much harder.

I had no idea where to start with this when I first heard it. Whatever genre you'd put this song in is not something I'm familiar with. With nothing to really base my part off of, I decided to just follow the synth part and see what happened. The verse beat slowly developed throughout the month, I made changes to it all the way up until right before I hit the record button.
The chorus reminded me of something you'd hear at a club or a rave (in my head at least, I don't actually have the real world experience to back that up haha). The part was really involved in my head so it took me a little bit of time to strip it down and figure out how to make it playable. I was definitely going with a "programmed" vibe though and I knew I wanted to keep the upbeat hi-hats consistent throughout. The dotted 8th note snare/bass part was a happy accident, I was listening to a lot of Finch's "Say Hello To Sunshine" album this month (not even remotely similar to this song) and their drummer does that all over it. It just showed up while I was "searching" for something to play and I liked it a lot.
Enjoy the many instances of drummer-face during the rim click part, I had no idea my face was doing that haha.

This song was the hardest one for me so far because it took me a while to figure out what I was going to play. I was going through something similar to what a lot of my students were going through: "It's an acoustic song, it already sounds great without drums." I partly agree with that statement, but there were a few things that made me think otherwise. First of all, Song Of The Month is about creating a drum part, so we have to do something haha. Secondly, and more importantly, the beginning of the song has a pretty solid bass guitar part in it. When I think of acoustic songs with no drums, I just think of guitar. An involved bass guitar part makes me think that there's room for me too. The tricky part is to figure out what to play without destroying the delicateness of the song. I decided to try to mimic something a hand drum would do, because there's nothing unusual about hearing an acoustic song with hand percussion. That's where my snares off/tom beat came from, my interpretation of a hand drum part.
I went back and forth a lot with the verses.. Since I'm making videos of these I want to be doing something, but it's important to know when to play and when not to play. I decided that parts of the verses (and the bridge, I struggled with that as well) were better served without me playing. Then when I do play, my parts hold more weight and give the song more dynamic peaks and valleys.

To me, this song screams for a very specific drum part that I really had no interest in playing. What I thought was the obvious choice just seemed so generic to me and I wouldn't have been as into it if I went that route. After a few listens I thought, "I wonder if the punk rock beat would work here?" and it did. I absolutely love this feel and use it every appropriate chance I get, and since I didn't think the punk rock beat was as obvious a choice, I wanted to offer it up as an example.

Before I sit down at the drums to play to a song, I spend a few days listening to the song until I'm able to play the song back to myself from memory. I used to rush the process and jump on the drums right away, and for some reason I'd wonder why my parts didn't feel right, or why I was getting lost. I need to know how the song goes before I'm able to create a part for it, so I listen to it until I know it. It's no different than when you hear a new song and after a few listens it gets stuck in your head and you catch yourself absentmindedly singing it as you're going about your day.
As I'm going through the listening phase, I also start brainstorming some ideas for drum parts. Nothing is set in stone, but I start coming up with ideas so that I'm not starting from scratch when I do sit down at the drums to play to it. Sometimes the ideas survive once I get to the drums, sometimes I decide they don't work the way I thought they would and have to try something else. A good example of this would be the beginning of this song. The intro riff reminds me a lot of Incubus, and originally I was thinking some kind of tom beat would work well, since Incubus does that a lot. However once I started trying things out on the drums, it didn't feel "right." It worked, but it never felt 100% and also seemed a little bit random because I wasn't going back to any tom beats for any other part of the song. So I changed my mind. I was still thinking of Incubus, but I decided to try a different approach. I'm pretty sure what I end up playing at the beginning is exactly what Jose does in the intro to Anna Molly haha. But it works, and it ties into the rest of the song a lot better than my tom idea did. So I went with it.
After the intro part, I naturally felt like I should accentuate the guitar changes, so that's what I did. For any students of mine reading this, that rhythm is Grid #7, with an 8th note pulse instead of a 16th note pulse. In fact, #7 pops up all over this song. I'm really not kidding when I tell you that that rhythm is everywhere.
The stripped down bass part had me feeling a little lost for a bit, I really wasn't sure what I was going to do for it. Pulling from my musical history, I was planning on doing a Travis Barker-esque tom beat when the guitar riff came in, but the part didn't develop the way I expected it to so that wasn't working. By the time I sat down at the drums I was still a little unsure about this part, but I found myself playing kick/snare/hi-hat and decided those sounds worked really well with that part, so I decided to accentuate the start of the guitar riff with the floor tom and then settle into my beat.
Getting to the chorus, if you're one of my students you should recognize those beats from Essential Beats. 6a/b and 3a/b. The first time I listened to the track it was the version with the click, so that quarter note pulse got stuck in my head, which is where 6a/b came from. I alter my kick pattern from Essential Beats in order to support the melody, but it's basically the same beat. I was also planning on leaving out a few bass drums for 3a/b as well, but the constant bass drums felt the best, so I stuck with them. I'm also not kidding when I tell you that the Essential Beats are everywhere (8b also makes a few appearances). For the bridge of the song, I continue with a 6a/b variation and 3a/b, except I flip them around to start with 3a/b (in the chorus I start with 6a/b). That's just what I heard, and it felt good when I played it.
The last thing worth mentioning is the transitional hits part that ties the intro into the stripped down bass part. That part pops up a lot throughout the song, and I decided to keep my part pretty much the same every time I played it. I used to always try to do something different, but sometimes less is more. The notes are the same, why shouldn't the drum part be? It can help establish familiarity with the listener, which is sometimes the way you want to go (in this case I decided it was the way to go). I think there are a few minor orchestration changes when I play it at the end of the song, but other than that it's pretty much the same every time. Also, those hits are Grid #7. Again, it's everywhere.

I participated in a contest the other week put on by Gruv Gear and a bunch of other sponsors. Drummers were provided with a 1 minute drumless clip of Virgil Donati's track "Ruination" and told to go for it. My approach was to simply be me. Everyone is influenced by other drummers, but lately I've felt like in the past I would take that influence too far and wind up trying to literally be someone else by playing what I thought they would have played, and I don't want to play like that anymore. I've been spending a lot of time practicing things that I think are cool and that I want to explore, and I really wanted to let my interpretations of those things come out in this. I also wanted my drum part to support the song instead of "contest drumming" all over it, and this is the result: me being me, and I'm really happy with it.
Another really cool aspect of this contest is that you get to hear hundreds of drummer's interpretations of the song, which is a really cool thing to be exposed to. I personally have been trapped in the "there's only one way to play a song" mindset before and this is a great reminder that that isn't true at all. I have really been digging these new Paramore tunes. The drumming has been really clever. I spent so long trying to separate the hi-hat part from the tambourine in this song. I came to the conclusion that it's mostly tambourine and hardly any hi-hat (in the first two choruses), but that would make a boring cover so I added a part that I thought worked well. Incorporating the timbale parts into the drum part has also been a welcome challenge, and I really like the rim click part in the second verse.

This is another good drum song off the new NFG album "Makes Me Sick." I like the beat in the verses and the four on the floor bass drums in the section at the beginning of the song.
A tip for learning songs quickly: Listen for patterns. The snare part in the bridge of this song is the exact same rhythm played on the hi-hat for The Sound Of Two Voices. That rhythm is incredibly common and can be found in countless songs, but it's a fun example to point out if you hadn't noticed already.

Recorded by Aaron Smith (http://envisageaudio.com) at Gossard Studios (http://gossardstudios.com). Filmed by Kamrin Olavarria and some trusty GoPro clamps. Thanks to Christopher Ghazel, Megan Shinner, and Chris Holbrook for lending me all the things I needed for this but didn't have.

I wanted to work on my punk beat and my junior high self had some great recommendations for songs to practice to. This song is such a great album opener, I remember getting this and putting it on, and as soon as this came blasting out of my speakers I remember just being like "whoa." Great band, great album, great song.

I've been to a lot of concerts, and I've seen A Day To Remember a few times. They are hands down one of, if not the best, live band I've ever seen. This is my favorite song of theirs to date, and it's very fun to play. Thanks for watching!

Blink-182 just came out with a new album and this was one of the songs they released before it dropped. I had to learn this song based off the beat in the first verse. If you'd like to learn how to play it, click here: youtu.be/CrUFLs5DQiY
