Outlaw Star is and was a very lively topic. The end credits are Outlaw Star's greatest mystery though. Unlike the show, the end credits are subdued, monochromatic, and almost melancholic. There is a vast gap between the aesthetics of the show itself and the almost Romantic illustrations of the end credits. Both seem to represent opposite poles of the same reality. Or an inverted future-past and past-future? These illustrations are worth consideration on their own. The actual credits offer only one name for their creator: "Hikaru Tanaka". Or is it Hicaru Tanaka? The name is an interesting issue.Hicaru Tanaka is somewhat of a mystery even in Japan. His web presence has largely atrophied in the past decade. He is and was a Science Fiction or Fantasy illustrator with a remarkable style. Yet, internationally, he is largely only known for the Outlaw Star credits sequence. Kaiser was a regular vinyl Doctor Faustus with a Berlin temperament to match. It is much appropriate the story of Kaiser, Ohr, and Krautrock share broad strokes with the Faust legend. Kaiser had a certain Teutonic nature spiked with 1970s politics (among other substances). The downfall of Kaiser follows a dramatic structure much the same, but, like the endless varieties of the Faust legend, Kaiser's end is much a mystery or an act of God. He was the "Mad Monk" in touch with the groovy universe. An act of God or a Sternenmädchen? It was all self-destruction that ended in an essential disappearance or transformation.Though he hated the foreign label "Krautrock", Kaiser was instrumental in building that international image of German Rock music. He signed to his label nearly every major German name of the era: Tangerine Dream, Ash Ra Tempel, Guru Guru, Popol Vuh and even a brief parlay with Amon Düül I. There were others such as Mythos, Hoelderlin, and Wallenstein. All of these, taking a cue from Edgar Froese, Kaiser declared to be "Cosmic Music". In the following decades, Kaiser became the topic of polarizing arguments, but Kaiser was long gone by then. He remained in only a few strange clues. The three greats of the era: Klaus Schulze, Edgar Froese, and Manuel Göttsching all hold vastly different views on Kaiser. Only the growing decades, and the cosmos, will decide Kaiser's fate. It was a "2010 Sci-Fi Project". The strange menagerie of Rock, Folk, and technological concepts would eventually develop into the under-remarked "Transverse City (1989). It was Warren Zevon's tour of a Cold War world gone mad and introspection of his own psychology. The excitable boy that he was. In interviews, Zevon called the album a, "Checklist of humanities ills." So has Transverse City grown malignant since those Cyberpunk statements or has the world turned upside down?The album was intended to be "Dense" and was a studio project from top to bottom. On it, Zevon was able to enlist contributions from Jerry Garcia, David Gilmour, J. D. Souther, Neil Young, and even actor Michael Ironside contributed to the album's centerpiece "Run Straight Down". Songs like "The Long Arm of the Law" and "Gridlock" zoomed through the social chaos of Zevon's imagined future. "Turbulence" and "They Moved The Moon" examine longing on both sides of the Cold War, Afghanistan and nowhere. "Down In The Mall" and "Nobody's In Love This Year" are economic statements which might still hold weight in personal matters today. There's no Lawyers or Money here, but there is a sort of headless underground. Zevon's sight aimed far on the album and, as a musician's musician, he may have a uniquely Zevonian prediction for the outlandish world of 2010. Winter Synth is a particularly cold variant of Dungeon Synth that emerged only a few years after Dungeon Synth's emergence. Or is it a variant of Dungeon Synth at all? Dark Ambient, Dungeon Synth, and Winter Synth... The list usually runs something like that. Winter Synth is always the third qualifier in the list of three adjacent "styles". The rule threes defined Winter Synth orginally as "something that was not Dungeon Synth". Since it emerged in such an embryonic period, Winter Synth essentially serves as the "second stem" of Dungeon Synth. Winter Synth was crafted in essentially the same manner as Dungeon Synth: by albums and aesthetics. As defined by Balbulus on the Winter Synth Blog, Winter Synth (or WS) is cold, austere, and hypnotic. It embraces everything from the equinox to Antarctica. This is a genre for the winter nights of ice, forests, and mountains. This video is a far from perfect appendix to my previous Dungeon Synth video. It is more an exploration of the complications in Dungeon Synth's many emergent styles: Winter Synth, Nature Synth, Forest Synth, etc. It seems the style/genre is constantly exploding with mutations and experiments. Is all of this splitting hairs over presentation? Winter Synth ties deeply into Dungeon Synth's musical lineage. Winter Synth is perhaps the Ambient mirror to Dungeon Synth's Black Metal: Klaus Schulze, Paysage D'Hiver, Idjarn, Jääportit, and even up to the recent Aindulmedir. What? Never heard of The Super Awesome Adventure of Hunk (otherwise known as TSAAoH)? This is a little digital archeology into the zeitgeist of 2007 YouTube then. The days when Resident Evil 4 regined as one of the crowned kings. The era of Gameplay Montages, YouTube Poops, Minds Series, and Abridged Series. It was an era before most of those video labels though. It was an era of the ascendance of "lol randumb xd" which strikes the era as incredibly archaic today. This old series is equally awkward and gangly in many respects. This look back does not regret the past though, it looks back at how it is unfinished. This video is really just me indulging in a strong dose of nostalgia. The roots of the Pseudiom channel can actually be traced back to The Super Awesome Adventures of Hunk. It deserves the credit for being one of those obscure series that were attempting to due a lot for the time, but never got real recognition for doing one thing that lasted. RTshapshooter and Hyconafistarosticate's Resident Evil videos had popularity, but it did not have lasting popularity. As such, it faded away to become another artifact remembered by only a few who still watch over it. The Internet is strange in how a joke from the Dragon Ball fanbase can end up traveling across enough websites to influence Scooby-Doo. Oh, yes, Shaggy is involved in this video too. A joke can travel across the world faster than a media franchise. Gohan Blanco, El Hermano, UI Shaggy, all came into their crowd-sourced existence. Due to the wealth of what was produced on 4chan, YouTube, and certain forums, this video is far from perfect, but it is a review (or more a revue in style). Gohan Beast or Beast Gohan. The hottest new form out of Dragon Ball Super: Superhero. Is this Gohan Blanco cannonized? Did enough magic and Spanish grant such a wish? Not really. It is a sort of anime synchronicity though. Akira Toriyama's character designs were predestined to create a look resembling the meme of Gohan Blanco (Ultra Instinct already existed). Toriyama has made more then enough statements about how Super Saiyan came about so they can be extrapolated. For decades, Burroughs was the shining example of a rather smart individual, but a person who thought they were smart in all the wrong areas. Burroughs quick thinking and sharp tongue carried him across the early history of the United States of America.As a criminal celebrity, Burroughs may very well be one of the earliest examples of "True Crime". Who else but Blue Öyster Cult? "Then Came The Last Days of May" is a an early standout track from BOC's first album: Blue Öyster Cult (1972). The song retells a deadly meeting between two dealers and three college kids in the Arizona desert. And, it does retell the story. While written by guitar virtuoso Buck Dharma (Donald Roeser), Buck based the lyrics of an actual event. It was an event tangentially connected to the origins and sound of the cult itself. The backstory itself has become somewhat of a mystery in itself though. Buck tells of a trap laid for three college students on vacation. The song is an artistic interpretation of the story by the band, but the event was newspaper worthy. Strangely enough, the event was supposedly reported on by Arizona's own reporter Don Bolles in the last days of may. Every connection which emerges with the song's mysterious 1960s backstory makes it stranger. Like everything associated with Blue Oyster Cult, there is more than a touch of black humor and unnerving Horror in it. A band most have probably heard in passing, but none (outside Germany) could name the duo behind it: Michael Holm and Kristian Schultze. A pop-singer and a jazz keyboardist who united to make music about the world. A fantastical image of the world, but a pure fantasy none the less. One inspired by Peruvian flutes, mechanical synthesizers, and the European studio environment. The band Cusco existed purely as a concept in the studio.For a brief moment, Cusco's music was a global trend. There are few sounds more associated with the term "New Age", but "New Age" is not a useful term in regards to Cusco. Holm and Schultze's work appeared everywhere from commercials, to late night radio, to even Epcot. This video does not cover everything, but it gives enough of a taste to understand Cusco. Japan's "Ee Ja Nai Ka" could best be considered an Eastern equivalent to Europe's legendary "Dancing Plague". Both involved spontaneous dancing for days often due to unexplained events or miracles. What makes the "Ee Ja Nai Ka" more remarkable though is they occurred in the 1800s and was well recorded in both writing and artwork. The "Ee Ja Nai Ka" exploded between 1867 and 1868. Then, after barely a year, began to peter out as these "miracles" became less and less common. As is obvious, there was probably more to the random nature of these mass dancing spectacles...The "Ee Ja Nai Ka" took place against a backdrop of total social meltdown in Japan. By the 1860s, the opening of trade to the West had sent Japan into a spiral of instability. Neither the established Tokugawa Shogunate nor the civilian populace could maintain Japan's collapsing feudal structure. A structure that had kept peace (and tranquility) throughout the country for more than 200 years. The "Ee Ja Nai Ka" then were a sort of mass, hysteric response to events beyond the people's control. But, when there is an opportunity, political players will always take the advantage... It is no surprise then the internet has long sought after Borges notorious thought experiment. A totally sealed universe that may hold its own vindication, but can anyone ever find it?Though, neither Borges nor the Internet were the first to conjure the overwhelming idea.
