Two big questions changed my art forever. For the better!Angela Fehr Watercolour2023-10-23 | What if no one cares about my art? What if I can never be as good at art as I dream of being?

Thank you to GoTrax.ca for giving me the CTI 2 Electric Bicycle to try. I've experienced wonderful customer service from them and when the first bicycle I was shipped arrived with some issues (not their fault), they responded quickly and sent a replacement bike that has been a delight to ride. If you're shopping for an e-bike and you're like me, not really up to the challenge of getting in shape for cycling season, a cruiser style bike is the way to go. The seat is comfortable, the tires offer a pretty smooth ride even on the rough gravel I tested it on, and the speed is just right for enjoying the views while being able to put some pretty good mileage on in an afternoon.
Set up was easier than the booklet included with the bike suggested, with quite a few of the steps outlined already done for you. They send all the tools you'll need to set the bike up, except a pump for the tires. It's useful to have a second person with a little bit of wrenching experience on hand to help with setup. My husband saw me muddling along and sped up the process when he noticed I had the fork turned backward while trying to mount the handlebars to the frame. We got the bike assembled in less than an hour and after charging the bike overnight, I was riding the next day.
Take your first ride in a level place with a long straight stretch so you can get used to the pedal assist and the boost of speed it provides. Make sure you test the brakes first so you can ride confidently!
My additional modification was adding some non-slip matting to the back rack so I can set my paint palette on the rack as a little table while sketching on location. It's a little hack that makes a big difference for an on-the-go painter.
The first time I rode this bike I met a dirt biker on the road who was SO curious about my e-bike. He offered to trade bikes so we could test drive each other's rigs! I'm still chuckling over the idea of jumping on his high-powered dirt bike (I was wearing a skirt at the time!) but I love that my bike turned into a conversation starter between me and someone I would probably never have the opportunity to visit with. It was a fun exchange!Discovering Greece: Watercolour Painting Adventures with Angela Fehr and The Blue WalkAngela Fehr Watercolour2024-08-09 | I visited Greece for the very first time in May of this year and I want to share an overview of our experience with you. Watercolor Painting from Intuition: 30 minute demonstrationAngela Fehr Watercolour2024-07-26 | It's easy to feel defined by our limitations in art, but true freedom comes in letting yourself feel free to simply love the process, look for the beauty and trust that growth will come with time. Taking time to paint without a specific plan is one way of developing good instincts for composition and design, and I recommend it be a part of your painting practice on a regular basis. I paint an intuitive exploration painting at least once a week and many of these never turn into anything amazing, but they serve a purpose of setting my intention for a painting session, awakening my curiosity, prompting experimentation and risk-taking, and helping me observe watercolor and become more responsive during the painting process.

Additionally, I'm going to share info on my upcoming travel workshops and a bit of a look at what happened when 16 watercolor painters met in Greece to paint, eat and see the sights!

Talking Greece with the Blue WalkAngela Fehr Watercolour2024-06-13 | Next week I'll be sharing a longer look at my trip to Greece and the entire interview with Jeannette Candau & Suzy Schutz of the Blue Walk, but I couldn't wait to share this little gem from our conversation as we talk about the inevitably of travel taking you out of your comfort zone and what this teaches us. Art and travel are connected in this; often as artists we feel like if we're uncomfortable, we're doing something wrong, but this couldn't be further from the truth! Discomfort is necessary for growth and can be welcomed.

My process for mounting a painting on panel has changed a bit over the years, so I can ensure a better outcome, and I'm sharing those changes in this video.
Supplies Needed: (When you purchase using these links, I get a small commission. Thank you!) Gesso or Primer: I use this super primer amzn.to/3WFywUj Golden Extra Heavy Gel Medium [Scroll down the list to select the size you want]: http://bit.ly/2ghLfc6 Krylon Kamar Varnish Spray: http://bit.ly/2fS7XqM Dorland Wax Medium: http://bit.ly/2ghPFje Wood Panel slightly smaller than your painting
Sharp knife for trimming the edges, sandpaper for smoothing Brushes for applying the medium Lint free cloth for applying wax and buffing
I find this method works best on 140 lb paper, as thicker paper might not adhere as evenly to the panel.

Conversation between Ian Roberts & Angela FehrAngela Fehr Watercolour2024-04-26 | We all hope to make great art, but how can you know if what you are making has the potential to be great? Can you reconcile yourself to the idea that you might consider yourself lucky to make only one or two truly great paintings in your lifetime? If you truly can't identify your own greatest work, how can you commit to painting and find joy in the practice of art?
Ian Roberts @IanRobertsMasteringComposition and I talked about some of these ideas in a recent conversation and I wanted to share a piece of that conversation with you. The entirety of the interview is available to members of the Heart-Led Artist Journey, an identity and skill development series for artists available at heartledartist.com
The Heart-Led Artist Journey is not about learning to paint like me; it's designed to help you find freedom to paint the way you were uniquely designed to. As I model my own artistic journey and the principles that inform it, and how I teach myself how to grow in skill and expression, you will be shown principles and exercises to apply to your own practice in a way that suits your learning style, interests and approach to art.
There is a time for copying other artists; it's a great way to learn techniques. But when you are ready to start stepping into your own identity as an artist, there's no better way than with a strong mentor; one who opens up their practice with humility and generosity, while allowing you to find your own definition of what your art is meant to be.

Here is what I bring when I travel to art workshops. This kit will fit in a backpack or carryon luggage and is light enough to carry easily.
It's not better to overpack; while you think you want all those extra supplies, it's going to take you longer to set up and take down your materials, and weigh a lot more, and you'll end up painting less if you bring too much stuff.
This is the kit I bring, the basics fit in a 9x12 inch pouch and I add some extra paper when I plan to paint a lot. I have brought this kit to Italy, England, to Prince Edward Island, Arizona and hiking in my home area as well, and I treasure the memories my watercolour sketchbooks hold.

Paint and palette: Bring the color palette you are accustomed to. I like this portable palette from Mijello for travel. LINK: amzn.to/3HCWuqc
The paint colors I’ll be using most will likely be these from my Daniel Smith dot card: dickblick.com/myaccount/blicku/hxxdx2g5wmrux Aussie Red Gold Carmine Cobalt Teal Blue Cobalt Violet Deep Green Gold Hematite Burnt Scarlet Genuine Lavender Mars Yellow Moonglow Nickel Azo Yellow Opera Pink Phthalo Turquoise Quinacridone Sienna Rose of Ultramarine Sodalite Genuine Venetian Red Verditer Blue Zoisite Genuine ...and Payne's Grey or Payne's Blue Grey Manganese Violet from Schmincke: bit.ly/33Pm9Xl
Little extra colours in my palette right now: Bloodstone by Daniel Smith Horizon Blue - Holbein
NOTE: If you are filling your palette with paint, please try to do this several days before you plan to travel, so that the paint has time to dry in the palette. And note that honey based paints (Sennelier and M Graham for example) do not set firmly and will often ooze during travel and make a huge mess. Glad Press & Seal wrap can help add another layer of protection to keep wet paint from spilling in your palette.
Brushes: your favorite brushes (I like round natural brushes or soft synthetic with long, flexible bristles, but a variety of brushes is helpful for making different marks.) Travel brushes can be nice although if you have a good brush roll for travel, full size brushes don’t take up much more room than travel brushes. The brushes in this video are made by Rosemary & Co: rosemaryandco.com/watercolour-brushes/travel-brushes I use the R2 and R9 brushes from this travel line.
Paper: You can keep it as simple as a sketchbook, but if you paint quickly like me, it's nice to have multiple options that fit in a backpack. I will be bringing a couple of watercolor sketchbooks: My favourite Etchr Perfect Sketchbook Limited Edition: etchrlab.com/products/tps-signature-series-2023-cold-press
or a good supply of artist quality, 100% cotton paper in about 9x12 inches. The main reason for bringing both sketchbooks and paper is that while one painting is drying, I can work on another piece of paper without smearing the first painting. Arches watercolour paper at Blick Art Materials: bit.ly/3G0O2i7
Water containers: 1-2 water containers or collapsible cups amzn.to/3vqYteL
Painting board or support to tape or clip your paper to. I use corrugated plastic (cor-plast) cut slightly larger than my paper. I bring two - I can sandwich my paper in between the cor-plast and keep it smooth and clean while it’s in my suitcase. Cor-plast boards: amzn.to/3TRg0aa Paper towels Masking tape Bulldog clips (to hold down paper when painting outdoors) Pencils, pens for sketching. I like an assortment of mark-making tools to help me feel playful when I’m sketching in a new place.
Easel: (OPTIONAL) The En Plein Air Pro is my personal favourite for watercolour. Easy to set up and durable. bit.ly/3XxlzdB
If you prefer to sit when you paint, rocks can get uncomfy! Packing a folding stool (some camping stools have a zippered case and strap for carrying) might be a good idea for rural locations (i.e. locations without a cafe on site!).

@opusartsupplies invited me to share a demonstration of my watercolour landscape painting process.
In this demo I'm sharing the open-ended process that I use to create intuitive, abstracted landscape paintings. I'm using a "whole package" reference photo in this session, which creates its own kind of tension and you'll see here just how difficult it can be to let go of expectations and create a painting that carries its own kind of life and expression.

Am I good enough to be an artist? How can I paint with confidence and freedom?
Watch your self-talk when you paint! Phrases like "good enough," "perfect," and "failure" can be discouraging and self-limiting when there is so much happening during an artist's process. If you're making mistakes, you are learning. If you're painting, you're building skill in technique. And if you're painting to earn someone else's approval, you're going to struggle to find your own voice and feel confident in your style and practice.

For #worldwatercolormonth I'm posting a new video every day in July. Today it's a little different, I'm walking you into my studio restroom, showing off the design skills of my carpenter husband. Wade built my studio top to bottom and he put a LOT of input into every aspect of the design - he has great taste! For the bathroom, he had full design vision for the space and I let him run with it. The gas station theme was a fun outcome! At one point, I had painted the bathroom wall yellow, and tried a "Venetian plaster" effect with terracotta rub-on texture. It wasn't working, and as we both looked at it and thought about what to do instead, we spoke simultaneously, "STRIPES!" It was a great moment of creative synchronicity.
One reason I wanted to share this video was of the way it speaks to caring about craftsmanship, that creativity is really a focus on making beautiful even small, overlooked elements and moments. I thrill with connection to creativity when I see someone who cares enough to invest intention into whatever they are doing, and this kind of caring should be celebrated, called out and honoured. How to Fill a Rectangular Palette for Watercolor and Keep Your Colors Clean!Angela Fehr Watercolour2023-07-26 | It's easy to follow the color wheel to fill a round palette, but how can I fill a rectangular palette and keep the colors in an order that works? I've learned that I need to make peace with the questions I carry rather than feeling like I need to have all the answers. This little clip is taken from a workshop I taught earlier this year on Vancouver Island. Check out my current workshop schedule here: angelafehr.com/in-person-workshops
I'm posting new videos daily in July for #worldwatercolormonth ! Follow along here on my channel. How art has helped me grow over the past year...and beyond.Angela Fehr Watercolour2023-07-24 | The last year has been a struggle for me on a personal level, and as I've gone through this season of heart change, I've been thankful for the lesson's I've learned through my art practice. I often say that "watercolour lessons are life lessons," and this has borne out as I've faced some truths I'd been avoiding, and let go of some baggage I've carried for too long. I'm thankful for the gift art has been in teaching me to be courageous and willing to be vulnerable. It's a growth process that will be continuing, lifelong. When Less is More in Watercolor: Painting a Minimalist Landscape IntuitivelyAngela Fehr Watercolour2023-07-23 | For #worldwatercolormonth I'm posting a new video every day in July! With every painting session, techniques were refined and further tools for creating an interesting, impactful watercolor painting were discovered. And that toolbox has come in mighty handy over the years!
Today, when I paint, I rely on all the strategies that have been internalized, a sort of muscle memory for painting that doesn't take logical thought as much as intuitive guidance. The idea of creative flow that is drawn upon to inform the techniques and tools I have at my disposal.
All through #worldwatercolormonth I've been using the same reference photo, adding my knowledge of the scene to my store of creative inspiration, and today I'm carrying on with that pattern, painting the prompt of FRAGMENT as the practice of assembling the pieces of what I've done in the past, what I know how to do, and what I want to learn and do better - all of these things come together and that's what makes every painting unique!

Tips for Framing Watercolor Paintings.Angela Fehr Watercolour2023-07-20 | I'm posting a new video daily for #worldwatercolormonth Today we're going behind the scenes to tackle the problem of framing finished watercolor paintings. Because watercolor is painted on paper, it needs protection, and this is why most watercolor paintings are framed under glass, with a mat and backing board.
I also enjoy a more contemporary look and method of mounting watercolor paper on a wood panel, sealing with a wax & resin compound. This makes it easier to hang the painting alongside paintings on canvas or panel and removes the glare of glass. My video showing how I mount a painting on a wood panel is here: youtube.com/watch?v=XHeDltkj9_M
The bulk frames I mention in this video are from @opusartsupplies - bit.ly/3ObbW16How to Stop Overworking Your Watercolor Paintings! Strategies you can use.Angela Fehr Watercolour2023-07-19 | I'm posting a new video every day in July for #worldwatercolormonth Do you struggle with overworking your watercolor paintings? In this video, I'm going to talk about what I've learned about overworking, what it means, why it happens and how to prevent it.
You can have more fun with watercolor when you make your learning playful! Watercolor Inspiration from Angela FehrAngela Fehr Watercolour2023-07-18 | For #worldwatercolormonth I'm posting a new video every day in July! Today I want to share a clip from a recent workshop, where I tell the story of how a well-intentioned taxi driver caused a disaster...that then led to my favourite painting of the year!
The lesson here is that there is always an opportunity to see from a new perspective, and when you're in the middle of a disaster, taking a risk is a better response than giving up, panicking or losing it!

Sometimes the large dark areas can look flat and boring in a painting, but with watercolor we have many options for adding interest to a large passage of dark color. In this video I share an exercise for practicing dark values and patterns as well as an imaginative landscape that starts with a creative dark stroke and draws out from there. If you want to set up the cheapest possible setup, it's totally doable to get started with a minimal investment of money, and that's important because if you are feeling pressured to make your videos financially viable from day one, how and what you communicate in your video content will reflect the pressure you are feeling. Try to keep your initial costs low, and you can have a lot more fun in the creative process of building your video content and making lessons and tutorials that reflect who you are!

My 64 well, 18 inch palette is made by Robax: bit.ly/31UmrOuColor mixing neutrals in watercolor: Getting Good MudAngela Fehr Watercolour2023-07-13 | For today's #worldwatercolormonth daily video, I'm answering a question I get asked pretty frequently - "why don't my neutrals look as pretty as yours?"
Mixing complementary colors to get "mud" is a wonderful way of bringing some quiet, complex neutrals to your painting. They will make the pure colors look more vibrant and create lovely transitions between more saturated hues. Mixed neutrals can also help unify your color palette and make your painting more harmonious, but there is a little bit of finesse that can help you create lovely neutrals that don't look flat.
If you're learning watercolor technique, don't lose sight of your inner artistic style! It's easy to get so focused on painting correctly that you forget to invite your inner voice to express itself in your art. How to critique your art.Angela Fehr Watercolour2023-07-12 | It's one thing to look at a painting and estimate how well it matches the reference photo, but if my goal isn't photo-realism, how can I tell if my abstract or semi-abstract painting is any good?

When it comes to loose watercolor, opinions are going to be all over the place as to whether a painting is successful or not. Some artists will insist that good design or composition is the number one thing you should look for when you are evaluating a painting's success. I disagree. You have only to look at contemporary art for the last hundred years to know that there are many paintings that were created with different goals than merely good design. You are free to make decisions about the success of your work based on more intuitive criteria - on your own reaction to the work and whether it satisfies your desire for self-expression.
This is a hard subject to talk about because people will read that last paragraph and think I am advocating for an "anything goes" kind of ethic that casts aside ALL standards of excellence in art. I'm not. But I would argue that an educated artist - one who spends time viewing a diverse range of art, who thinks deeply about what emotion they want to convey in their work and commits to pursuing that - is an artist who will hold high standards for their work, even if composition isn't the first priority. While I don't prioritize composition in my work, I am always thinking about how a viewer will experience my painting (that includes composition) and I am unwilling to settle for less than a strong emotional response when I view my own paintings. This is my first criteria for whether I have created something of value to my body of work or not.

Workshop schedule is here: angelafehr.com/in-person-workshopsMastering Mark Making & Brush Handling in WatercolorAngela Fehr Watercolour2023-07-10 | Do you make space in your art practice to develop your brush handling? In this video for #worldwatercolormonth I'm demonstrating an exercise I do frequently; no limits, intuitive mark making to help me develop my brush handling instincts and create strategies and new marks that are vital and interesting.
One thing I thought was interesting was that the marks I describe in this video as "amateurish" (I actually prefer the term "unsophisticated") are actually my favourite marks in the entire painting. Even though they aren't marks that look skilled and nuanced, they have an energy and strength that adds a lot to the painting. So I try to have a mindset of welcoming even the marks that initially look "ugly" to me. You never know how your opinion will change!
