Where did it come from? It isn't in a basin—in fact its near the top of a bulge over 6 miles above the datum. For sedimentation of this kind to exist, it would have needed to form in a deep basin with tons of rushing water, then get uplifted an incredible 12 miles. On Mars, no less.Also, there are similar features on Valles Marineris and Earth's Grand Canyon that suggest a common backstory. Both are on high plateaus and are missing all of their excavated material. Also, it flows west out of the Rockies into a raised plateau called the Kaibab Upwarp—but rather than go around, the river cuts right through this plateau. Experts say it slowly cut its way as the land rose around the river, although difficult to comprehend since the plateau existed long before the river.The Grand Canyon is often compared to Valles Marineris, the gigantic scar across the surface of Mars. The structures are so similar it was originally assumed that this gigantic canyon on the red planet must have been formed by massive water erosion at some earlier, wetter epoch in Martian history—like Earth's Grand Canyon was thought to have formed. It’s a barren, broken land, forsaken by brooding hoodoos, rodents, snakes, and decomposing rock. Here granite boulders appear as bubbles of boiled sand. Not hollow, but solid drops of granite, formed as boils at the surface of a hot fluid matrix.‘Cauldron of Granite’ is an apt description. The energy came from below, and by electrolysis and thermal convection, boiled through layers of sand to the surface, liquifying the sand in the process, like one would melt metals in a cauldron.Many boulders look like the kind of candy made with drops of molten sugar. A viscous, thick material that quickly cools to form a skin that holds its drop shape, while the inside remains hot and liquid.
