Can You Beat Borderlands with Only Fists?

SpuddyCube 2025-09-11 | Who needs guns when you've got these guns? Okay, now I need you to picture flexing of the arm muscles in a way that's jovial but not showboaty. Cool, thanks.

These rules are not all encompassing, but I hope they'll help you get the general vibe:

1. I can only deal damage via Brick's fists. His pipe is not a fist.
2. I can't use any gear at any point. Artifacts are gear. I did allow a car for the tutorial jump, but the rest was on foot.
3. No major glitches such as Merchant of Death.
4. In the event of an accidental rule break, the area must be reset via save/quit.

Can You Beat Borderlands 2 with Only Kunai?

SpuddyCube 2025-04-18 | Of all the things in all the world, I've gotten a lot of requests to take Zer0's kunai for a swing. Also known as Death Bl0ss0m, it's... certainly a skill that exists. It can even be fun to use! Would I recommend trying to use only them for anything but a challenge?.. That's a different story.

As for the rules:

1. I can only deal damage with kunai and their explosives unless there's absolutely no other way to proceed. You probably know exactly what turrets I'm talking about. This includes even things as small as jump damage otherwise.
2. No supporting gear like the Grog or guns in general. Melee shields are unfortunately necessary.
3. If/when a rule is violated, the map must be reset via save quit.

SpuddyCube 2025-02-28 | You've got to love Tediore. It's got tedimore than could ever ask for. Just as long as you have more ammo than sense, and a stronger throwing arm than every member of every baseball league combined. Welcome to Borderlands two with the Gunerang.

Rules:

1. Same as usual, no damage that isn't caused by the Gunerang. This includes even things as small as jump damage.
2. No unique gear outside of the Gunerang and my class mod.

Miq has a storied history with gearless runs, and I hope I was able to do it some justice at the hardest difficulty available in the base game. While it was a hell of a challenge overall, it's made me heavily reconsider how I feel about Axton in terms of build and balance. He's certainly not my first choice for my personal playstyle, but he's all around broken. For anyone who's said you need any specific gear to beat Borderlands two... You just need Axton. And a lot of time, of course. And I mean... a substantial amount of knowledge about a decade old game, let's not discount the fixation factor that goes into something like this.

Rules:

1. The run must be completed at OP 10.
2. No gear may be used for any purpose beyond sale. Quest rewards must be unequipped immediately.
3. Damage can only be dealt through my turrets. No melee, bounce, etc. Just turrets. Them triggering environmental damage is fine.
3.1. Accidental throwing of grenades/melee constitute damage.
4. Driving cars is strictly banned. Their horn function is a necessary evil.
5. No BAR.
6. Rule violations must be met with a map reload via save/quit.

Can You Beat Borderlands 2 as Everyone at Once?

SpuddyCube 2024-11-29 | Taking on every vault hunter at the same time was... certainly a decision. A fun challenge in some ways, and an incredibly overwhelming one in others. It's one I'm glad I've done, but that always easier to say in retrospect. You could say we were running (Borderlands) two many. I hope you enjoy, and more importantly that you have a lovely day.

In reference to the obvious question regarding rule two, the answer is left. We went with the left one.

Rules:
1. All characters must be controlled using the same controller at all times, not on the main menu. The mouse was used to switch active files to begin playing.
2. All characters must use the same skill tree, at least trying to maintain the same point investments in terms of location on said tree. It felt more thematic, though this was really easy to avoid.
3. No unique gear could be used. Because I said so.
4. No BAR, because having it active creates an uneven playing field between runs and runners.

While I know a lot of folks say I shouldn't play games for the first time through challenge runs... Honestly, I think it's a great way to get to know a lot of titles, and especially this one. It was a delight to get to feel out the maps the way I did, and I'm excited for the sequel.

No powers
No upgrades
No throwables
No tools
No food
No items in general

All rules do follow the "Unless there's no other way" sort of exception. Those will be brought up directly for the purpose of correction when I have inevitably gotten something terribly wrong.

SpuddyCube 2024-09-27 | What is a one shot? What is a shot at all? Of course, mileage may vary in that regard, there is the far more simplistic question to ask and answer. Leaning into the more unique weapons and abilities that the game has to offer, I wanted to take on something we could all agree on in a single attack per enemy in my wake.

Rules:

1. Enemies must die in one button push. Skills, guns, melee, etc. Doesn't matter. One button. One kill.
2. While exploits are allowed for things like farming, I will not for things like damage buffs.
3. In the event that an enemy survives, the area must be reset via exiting to the menu or the game entirely.

Can You Beat Black Myth: Wukong with Only Magic?

SpuddyCube 2024-09-13 | Magic may be all around us, and it may be a massive part of the story of Wukong, but it certainly doesn't do as much heavy lifting in the game based on it as I'd hope. Between long cooldowns and longer fights, this stands as but a glimpse of my Journey to the West. Please just ignore that I started here.

Simply put, the bonk stick was not allowed for the run. Transformations, spells, spirits, and vessels would make our damage. All fun to use. None all that incredible by themselves. With the exception of glitches, the goal was to bring down all bosses, because I can/could.

Rules:

1. The run must be done at OP 10.
2. All gear used must be obtained during the run.
3. No unique items may be used, because I said so.
4. After the beginning, I must be fully poisoned before moving forward. Failure to do so must be met with a return to the point where I spawned, death, or a reload of the area. Whichever was necessary to remedy the mistake.
5. Cars can only be used when necessary due to it not being lethal in vehicles.
6. No turtle shields.

How deep into Pandora can one get when plagued by spores? When hampered by heaps of health inhibiting inhalants? I've wanted to take a crack at answering these questions for a while. And finally, I can. It's... certainly a way to play the game. Also, Gaige/Deathtrap are underrated. Hot dang.

Can You Beat Borderlands 3 as a Normal Person?

SpuddyCube 2024-07-26 | Borderlands three is full of things like variety, builds, guns, all sorts of legendaries. But what if it didn't have to be? Welcome to the average person's experience when faced with the horrors of Pandora. You wouldn't think it'd be a challenge run, but Borderlands three drop rarity is certainly a thing that exists.

The specific rules are as follows:
1. No using skill points/action skills.
2. No gear of a rarity uncommon or higher.
3. No class mods/relics.
4. No Guardian Ranks
5. No elemental weapons. Yes, this includes explosive launchers/Tediore.
6. No Unique gimmicks on weapons. This includes Jakobs ricochet. Thus, only DAHL and Vladof are viable. Switching fire modes is disallowed.
7. No using shields with anything but base effects. (White doesn't have them anyway.)
8. No melee within combat, nor bouncing upon thine enemies heads.
9. No buying healing...
10. No slides, and mantling should be avoided at all costs. Except progression. Mandatory climbing is mandatory.

SpuddyCube 2024-07-12 | To clarify, rules for the challenge run dictate that I may attack with each copy of a weapon one time. Miss or hit, it must then be thrown away. Armor, shields, rings, spells, gear in general follows a similar rule. Got hit? Armor off. For this reason, I didn't use armor, shields, or rings with a couple of notable exceptions.

SpuddyCube 2024-06-28 | Between Knife of Dunwall and Brigmore Witches, Dishonored has some fantastic DLCs that were a treat to play about a decade ago. But until recently, I'd only ever played them in high chaos. So I had to know, how were things on the opposite extreme?

Rules:
No rune/gear upgrades
No powers
No tools
No favors
No killing
No detections
No throwables
No bonecharms

All of course come with the caveat that the game does make certain things like Blink mandatory in places. If deemed absolutely necessary, it'll be used and directly mentioned. Otherwise, the goal was to use only hands and feet to make our way through the game.

Can You Beat Borderlands 2 without a Neck?

SpuddyCube 2024-04-12 | Borderlands two is full of different playstyles. Some folks might favor things like melee only to avoid having to aim. I... well I decided to take a different route. While I enjoy a pretty wide range of challenge runs, I'm just not particularly good with mouse and keyboard. So what's the worst that could happen relying almost entirely on aim assist instead? There's at least next to no way that it could be worse than the Borderlands movie trailer.

Neckless, no neck, no mouse, without aiming, whatever you call it, the first mistake was starting. The second mistake was choosing UVHM OP ten. The third was probably the gear choice, but at this point, I'm convinced that Maya is just too strong to be stopped.

Can I Beat Spore as the Worst Possible Herbivore?

SpuddyCube 2024-03-22 | Spore is a game that encourages all sorts of things. In my case, it's an interesting setting for challenge runs. More specifically, the Pitiful Worm challenge. A run born not of avoiding evolution, but but specifically designing a creature as terrible as possible. But with the power of the creature creator at my fingertips, how could I ignore the obvious? How could one truly call a creature a pitiful worm when there was yet one still lower? I present to you, the worst possible herbivore in Spore. At least, I'm fairly sure.

I'm far less sure if there are any runs left for me to do in the future, but it's been a delight to take a trip down memory lane. I hope you enjoyed the trip regardless. It does make me wonder if there's more to be found in old nostalgic titles.

Can You Beat Borderlands 2 with Only the Deliverance?

SpuddyCube 2024-03-08 | Having used arguably the worst gun that Borderlands two has to offer for a challenge run, I thought I'd try my hand at something a bit more legendary. While the Deliverance isn't as iconic, it holds a special place in my heart for the fact that I think Tediore reloads are a fun way to play the game. It being a more usable weapon though, I of course had to compensate via some added difficulty.

It's a bit outside of how I usually set up my runs, so if this is something you'd prefer to see when revisiting the game, feel free to let me know. Can You Beat Vigil the Longest Night with Only Bows?

SpuddyCube 2024-02-23 | Given the multitudes of games within the genres that Vigil fits into, from Dark Souls to Hollow Knight, I absolutely recognize that there are a lot of examples of phenomenal titles. And while I've yet to get around to most of them, especially Hollow Knight... This title was a delightful little treat. It's a flawed gem that has me rather shocked at how much I found myself enjoying a genre that I historically haven't liked.

While it's debatable as to whether or not this really classifies as a challenge run, it is fundamentally limiting my options. Please ignore the fact that this is also arguably just how I'd play the game anyway. Who knows? Next time, maybe the task at hand will be to kill all of the bosses with daggers instead of a bow. Only time can tell. Sometimes I just like having an excuse to check out a game that I've been meaning to get around to playing and can't otherwise find the time for.

SpuddyCube 2024-01-26 | For better or worse, I got the urge to play Borderlands three. There are almost certainly a good number of ways that could have been less painful or more fun, but here we are. Overall, I am impressed by how good shields are, but that's not saying a lot.

As for other games in the franchise? Maybe at a later date. Far too much of my time has gone to Borderlands three recently. Vendor farming is a really dry experience, and triple rolled shields feel like a myth.

Dishonored: Revisiting My First Challenge Run a Decade Later

SpuddyCube 2024-01-05 | Dishonored is a game with a long and storied history of challenge runs. While there have been many runners of many flavors, it's hard for me to deny a sense of sentimentality toward the title, as it was the first I ever attempted. Literal years before I would even know the term "challenge run".

The rules are as follows.

1. No Killing anything.
2. No detection for any reason.
3. No upgrades. Corvo is wonderful as he is.
4. No abilities, except where mandatory.
5. No objects or gear, except where necessary. You know what you did, game.
6. In the event that any rule is broken, I must then reload a save where one has not.

The incredibly strict ruleset makes things a fair bit harder to manage, but I greatly admire just how much this game shines at any zoom. Be it quick and bloody or silent and unseen, I just adore the polished feel that almost everything in it has. So for those that voted for it, thank you for giving me this chance to revisit a whole lot of memories along the way.

Also, I've been looking for another excuse to play Tiny Tina's Wonderlands. While I have a handful of them, I wanted one that felt right, and hydras seemed like it would fit that bill. Having done it, I can't say that I'd recommend anyone try that sorta setup. Maybe the summon of my dreams is just around the bend. Who's to say?

Rules!

1. No skills/feats that do direct damage. This includes things like the Demi Lich companion.

3. I can only use Hydras to deal my damage, unless it's unavoidable. This includes things as small as bounce damage.

Can You Beat Cyberpunk 2077 with Only Incendiary Grenades?

He rebelled against the machine for his whole life, only to find that he was also rebelling against himself. Shenanigans ensue.

Honestly, I've been wanting to give the run a shot for a pretty good while now. I put it on hold to wait for the update to release, and now that I've gone through it? I dunno. Part of me really wishes I hadn't. Would've loved to see a full grenade spam in play, even if it meant farming out the materials for it. That being said, the game is feeling incredible when in motion. CD Projekt Red may not have produced the most polished game in the world, but they've produced a fantastic one.

Can You Beat Lies of P without a Weapon?

SpuddyCube 2023-09-29 | Lies of P contains a good number of weapons. It contains a good number of unique boss weapons. It also has a robotic arm that can punch through metal, shock, burn, and shoot through any and all threats that may come your way. You may be able to hazard a guess at which side of the game I took a personal interest in.

For the purposes of the run, please keep in mind that everything was completed on the base release of the game, for better or for worse. I hadn't even finished editing before I had the fun of seeing multiple changes to make the game easier...

It was a lot of fun though. I'd imagine a dedicated melee weapon would make for an easier run, but I am curious as to how such a thing might play. Maybe something to ask another day. Hard to know for sure.

Can You Beat Armored Core VI with Only Explosives?

SpuddyCube 2023-09-15 | Having never personally stepped into the pilot seat of an AC, I felt a bit intimidated, but irrationally excited to take a swing at Armored core VI: Fires of Rubicon. Explosives are often fun in games in the general sense, and I found the tracking missiles to be extremely satisfying. If I can watch things blow up from the comfort of not having to aim? I dunno, I just think it's a lot of fun.

I am curious to see if this will spell more titles from the franchise in the nearish future, because it was a delight to play through. I'm not quite sure how I would revisit it, but it's one that I'd love to, because seriously. Once you get a good feel on the controls, it just feels so good to move and flow through combat. It's short enough to not overstay its welcome, but long enough that it's a wonderfully full experience. Would recommend. Unless you get motion sickness.

SpuddyCube 2023-08-18 | My First Gun may not be a true statement of a mission title anymore due to DLC and updates, but it was true to me. At least in terms of Borderlands titles. I'm far from the first to try beating the game with the useless hunk of junk that is the Basic Repeater, but I can't say that I've seen someone else who dared ask such a stupid question in a more pure form.

In case you're wondering, yes. This is run number three in the ongoing saga of physically painful challenge runs. I think I need to stop ticking that counter up for my own health. But of course... the challenge must go on.

Can You Beat Remnant II with Only Summons?

SpuddyCube 2023-08-04 | After playing through Remnant: From the Ashes, I absolutely wanted to take a swing at Remnant II. Or Remnant 2, if you're having less fun.

I love summons even when they're not great. I love them even more when the devs are kind enough to give a dedicated summoner class. In this case, the archetype would be taken up by the legendary hero, Beef Chadwick the Third.

It was a really fun run, a fun game, and I do recommend giving it a playthrough or so if/when you get a chance! I'm always happy to see devs support what is one of my favorite playstyles by far. Do be warned, the performance may be a bit inconsistent. I would worry about how lower end rigs might handle certain areas, but otherwise....

Can You Beat Nioh 2 with Only Magic?

SpuddyCube 2023-07-21 | After my first couple of excursions in Nioh, I wanted to challenge myself to complete the same sorts of things within the sequel. Little did I know just how difficult it would start out... In the grand scheme of things, I think magic does become quite a bit stronger than ninjutsu, but that could also just be the additional playtime under my belt speaking.

Chasing an education with magical abandon, Hide was able to come through on the cleanest run that I was able to manage. Of course, I'd be more than happy to see it smoothed out even further. If nothing else, I'm fairly sure a yokai run will go over a bit better. Hide doesn't start magic, but they start half yokai. That's just math.

More recently to take on various challenges of which there are apparently opportunities galore. And as much as I've enjoyed it, it's been even better to share that passion with so many wonderful people, so... thank you for coming along for the ride. I really hope that it's been worth the fare.

While normality is relative, I thought it'd be fun to take on the game as a fairly unnoteworthy individual. And might I just say, I didn't think common guns were so inaccurate. I've used them when they came around for ages, but dang...

The specific rules are as follows:
1. No using skill points.
2. No gear of a rarity uncommon or higher.
3. No class mods/relics.
4. No elemental weapons. Yes, this includes explosive launchers/Tediore. The only exceptions are grenades.
5. No using shields that do damage/grenades that do anything other than blow up.
6. No melee within combat, nor bouncing upon thine enemies heads.
7. No buying healing...

Can You Beat Remnant: From the Ashes with Only Melee?

SpuddyCube 2023-06-23 | Well, yes. Also no. The answer is a little complicated, depending on who you ask, but more importantly what is the experience of the challenge run like? Answer: Pretty fun if you can get the right drops. I'm interested in seeing what that sort of RNG shapes out to look like in Remnant II.

I did pretty regularly miss my companions, but it made for a much meatier experience overall. It also gave me a good excuse to go through the DLC. I uhh... I dunno if I want to revisit said DLC at any point. Navigating is really hard.

SpuddyCube 2023-06-09 | After William's adventure through Japan with primarily pointy objects, it was only natural that I would do the same as Hide through Nioh 2. It was a lot of fun using Ninjutsu. As the most requested challenge run I've ever had, I really hope it doesn't disappoint. If it does... maybe better luck next time with the inevitable magic run.

The jutsu definitely seems considerably better balanced this go around. The AI is able to counteract it better. You can't carry as much. You can customize your quantities a bit better though, and the game overall has a better feel. All in all? Good game. Excited to play again.
