0:00 Prelude 2:30 FugueBach - Cantata O holder Tag BWV 210 - Yamagata | Netherlands Bach SocietyNetherlands Bach Society2024-10-17 | For this wedding cantata – recorded here for All of Bach with Sayuri Yamagata - Bach used the cantata he had written earlier: 'O! angenehme Melodei', BWV 210a. In five arias, Bach achieves maximum variety with regard to instrumentation and atmosphere. From the beautiful ‘beseelte Lieder’, we go via ‘matte Töne’ and ‘zarte Harmonie’ to the paradoxical third aria. Here, the flute is silenced in vain, as it goes its own way – more virtuoso than ever. This is followed by a stylised polonaise and a chorale-like closing aria.

From the pure bravura with which the prelude opens to the jubilant ending, the music leaps from one intense emotion to another with aplomb. The prelude has three sections, is alternately German and Italian/French in style and features a provocative clash between sunny D major and dusky F-sharp minor, filled with ties.

0:00 Prelude 5:22 FugueBach - Chorale Nun preiset alle Gottes Barmherzigkeit BWV 391 | Netherlands Bach SocietyNetherlands Bach Society2024-10-03 | At first sight, this chorale – recorded for All of Bach with four core members of the ensemble - appears exceptionally simple, for Bach at least. The text is an ode to God, like many chorales. Bach uses no special harmonic effects or striking dissonants. But Bach – the master of complexity – doesn’t choose simplicity without good reason. Here, he seems to be deliberately aiming for a classical, strict harmonisation. Both rhythm as content refer to the classical antiquity.

The performance begins with Bach's ‘Erwählte Pleißen-Stadt’; we extend this song of praise to the city of Leipzig to our present time. Imagine a company, CEOs talking about the success of their companies, standing behind lecterns like you have at a press conference. But then, in Bach's expressive cantata ‘Es erhub sich ein Streit’ BWV 19, whistleblowers wonder: what about that success? What goes on behind the scenes cannot pass muster. Power, money, sex, the same old story.
In the complex story of Telemann's opera ‘Der neumodische Liebhaber Damon, oder die Satyrn in Arcadien’, the satyr Damon tries to conquer a kingdom from which he has been exiled. Like a true contemporary seducer, he explores the boundaries of sexuality and bourgeois decency. The characters from Telemann's opera already enter the stage during BWV 19, the first complete Bach piece in the program. With some artifice here and there, a storyline emerges as if it had been conceived together by the two Baroque composers at the time.
Director Caecilia Thunnissen: "In the end, this production is all about the longing for love. Some try to obtain love with wealth, others with macho behaviour. In the costuming, designed by Mahshad Safaei, we play with gender fluidity, the new sexual revolution is happening now, the discussion is hot. We give the contemporary seducer a stage, what does it look like? Someone who plays with decorating, sexuality and eroticism, and who feels free in it."

The pieces can be dated to around 1705-6 and show how Bach practices and plays with the complexity of counterpoint and its rules, and breaking those rules. The prelude, in particular, is all about leg work. A virtuoso pedal solo introduces a questioning motif, on which Bach elaborates in the manuals.

The aria So du willst – recorded here for All of Bach with Jos van Veldhoven – comes from the very beginning of Bach’s career, during his time as organist in Mühlhausen. A cantata and aria where it is clear right from the start that this is not just about slight misfortune, but deep misery. The bass portrays the ambivalence of the believer: existential doubt versus certainty of faith.

BWV 46 - Rademann | Netherlands Bach SocietyNetherlands Bach Society2024-08-29 | In the opening chorus of BWV 46 – recorded here for All of Bach with Hans-Christoph Rademann - Bach paints a picture of affliction and suffering, in a large-scale prelude and fugue. The words come from the Lamentations of Jeremiah in the Bible, and refer to the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem. But the text is also seen as a foreshadowing of the Passion of Christ, thus linking the Old and New Testaments.

The chorale 'An Wasserflüssen Babylon', performed by Leo van Doeselaar for All of Bach, describes the desperate situation of the Israelites in exile. Many composers in the seventeenth century made an arrangement of it, with the Hamburg organist Adam Reincken as the absolute champion. As a fifteen-year-old, Bach copied this version down and undoubtedly studied it well. But when he made his own arrangement ten years later, he did not follow Reincken’s example. Instead of an ingenious but somewhat frivolous fantasy, as Reincken made, he chose to create a compact, sombre chorale prelude.

Leo van Doeselaar, organ Instrument: Arp Schnitger, 1692Bachs Family Reunion | Netherlands Bach SocietyNetherlands Bach Society2024-08-02 | Bach, the serious church musician? Bach, the bohemian? In this small-scale, theatrical concert entitled 'Bach's Family Reunion', the Netherlands Bach Society shows the composer's many faces, plus those of colleagues around him, including Telemann.
Shunske Sato, former artistic leader of the Bach Society: “We know so little about Bach, but the few things we do know - plus of course his music - give insight into the versatility of his character. Bach was not only the serious church musician, but also the man of improvisations and joyful folk songs. Bach was fiery and serious at the same time. He was a diligent man, he searched and dug deep, was always striving to become even better. For mediocrity, therefore, he had no patience. But he was also a bohemian, an epicurean, a lover of the then still exotic coffee. And of good food. An account exists of a trip to Halle; the dinner and tobacco costs exceeded the travel expenses. That is so significant."

That’s how it should be. At least that’s how Bach and his contemporaries saw it. Nowadays we always perform instrumental works like this violin sonata in concert halls. But in Bach’s day, this sort of music was played at elite dinners or parties given by musical friends. So pouring a glass of beer or wine with this chamber music is allowed – or even encouraged.

Sigiswald Kuijken and Lucia Swarts, violoncello da spallaBach - Ach, Herr, lehre uns bedenken from Cantata BWV 106 | Netherlands Bach SocietyNetherlands Bach Society2024-07-18 | The arioso ‘Ach, Herr, lehre uns bedenken’ – recorded here for All of Bach with Jos van Veldhoven – is from the famous cantata 'Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit' (Actus Tragicus). This is one of Bach’s oldest cantatas and the music was undoubtedly intended for a funeral. The arioso echoes the inescapability of the 'sterben müssen' in the accompaniment of the two recorders – pleadingly complemented by the tenor’s 'lehre uns bedenken'. The key remains minor (C minor), until briefly the sun breaks through (E-flat major) at the 'auf daß wir klug werden'.

Netherlands Bach Society Jos van Veldhoven, conductor Charles Daniels, tenor Heiko ter Schegget & Benny Aghassi, recorderBach - Kyrie, Christe, Kyrie BWV 672-674 - Smits | Netherlands Bach SocietyNetherlands Bach Society2024-07-11 | The music in Bach’s third Clavier-Übung illustrates in sound the two most important Sunday services in Leipzig: the Mass based on the abridged Lutheran liturgy with Kyrie and Gloria, and the service in which the Catechism is preached. The collection was undoubtedly as much an act of faith by a devout composer as it was a practical collection of pieces for extremely talented colleagues. The number three recurs throughout the collection, as in this trio of 'Kyrie, Christe, Kyrie', performed here by Reitze Smits for All of Bach.

Restoration: Flentrop 2013Bach - Cantata Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen BWV 51 - Van Veldhoven | Netherlands Bach SocietyNetherlands Bach Society2024-06-20 | The trumpet comes straight to the point, creating the ecstatic mood of this cantata – recorded here for All of Bach with Jos van Veldhoven - which revolves around jubilation and gratitude. In his arrangement, Bach emphasises the jubilant mood right from the start, with the rapidly repeated notes and the way in which he illustrates the word ‘jauchzet’. The expression of the words about ‘lallen’ (chatter) in the second movement is very effective, as is the final rich Italianate string accompaniment in the chorale ‘Sei Lob und Preis mit Ehren’.

Maria Keohane, sopranoBach - Vor deinen Thron tret ich hiermit BWV 668 - Koopman | Netherlands Bach SocietyNetherlands Bach Society2024-06-13 | BWV 668 - recorded here for All of Bach with Ton Koopman - is a closing chorale, possibly even the ultimate closing chorale. Entitled 'Vor deinen Thron tret’ ich hiermit', it is the last of the eighteen ‘Leipziger’ chorale arrangements. An air of incompleteness surrounds the piece, as a somewhat different version comes at the end of the first edition of the 'Kunst der Fuge' from 1751, where it bears the title 'Wenn wir in höchsten Nöten sein'. The main reason for the rather mythical aura surrounding BWV 668 is its special place as the conclusion of both the ‘Leipziger’ chorales and the 'Kunst der Fuge'.

A work by Bach presumably unknown to many – for us too - as Bach left behind only a very brief sketch of this concerto, of just nine bars. However, these nine bars do correspond to another piece: the ‘Sinfonia’ of the cantata Geist und Seele wird verwirret (BWV 35). And that’s where this reconstruction – recorded here for All of Bach with oboist Rodrigo López Paz – finds its basis. For the middle movement we have opted for the famous Adagio from the oboe concerto by Alessandro Marcello, which is an audience favourite nowadays, but was also greatly admired by Bach.

Nowadays, his chorale 'O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden' is most famous, but at the time people sang the long poem 'Gib dich zufrieden' at least as often, to many different melodies. Bach chose two of them for the Notenbüchlein. The message is rich yet very practical: even if God seems faraway (after all, life’s no picnic), in the end he offers salvation and the day of peace will come.

Charles Daniels, tenor Menno van Delft, organBach - Cantata Liebster Gott, wenn werd ich sterben BWV 8 - Sato | Netherlands Bach SocietyNetherlands Bach Society2024-05-23 | Although the words of this cantata - recorded here for All of Bach with Shunske Sato on the occasion of his farewell as artistic director of the Netherlands Bach Society - never literally refer to a bell, the music is still permeated with the ringing of bells. For Bach, there was nothing unusual about this in texts about death and dying. The clocks, bells and clockwork in this cantata portray the certainties and uncertainties of death: “When shall I die?” versus “Time always goes on”.

As a diligent pupil wanting to show what he could do, the young composer tried out a different technique for each phrase. We thus hear imitation, echoes and a melody that jumps from soprano to alto to bass – techniques that also crop up later in the Orgelbüchlein. Take especial note of a rather curious effect, whereby the melody is twice stretched out beyond breaking point, creating an ideal moment for unusual, expressive chord combinations.

Leo van Doeselaar, organ Instrument: Christian Müller, 1734Bach - Cantata Wir müssen durch viel Trübsal... BWV 146 - Van Veldhoven | Netherlands Bach SocietyNetherlands Bach Society2024-05-09 | Cantata 'Wir müssen durch viel Trübsal in das Reich Gottes eingehen', performed by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach, begins fairly cheerfully, with a mini organ concerto as a sinfonia. But immediately afterwards, the misery on earth becomes audible as the singers have difficult lines filled with obstacles. ‘Though you are sad, your sorrow will turn to joy’. These words from the sermon that was read in Leipzig on the third Sunday after Easter sum up the message of this cantata. The sorrow of earthly life is juxtaposed with the joy offered by faith and the promise of heaven.

In this documentary, All of Bach crew members, who have been involved from the start of All of Bach, give us an insight into this unique project from their own area of expertise. A funeral may seem a gloomy occasion, but Eber weaves the promise of eternal life throughout his hymn. This cantata formed a grand finale to Bach’s second year in Leipzig. His plan for that year was to write a new cantata every week based on a chorale, and in the opening chorus of BWV 127 the melody is indeed heard in the sopranos, true to tradition. But the instruments answer with their own chorale: Christe, du Lamm Gottes, Luther’s hymn that is often regarded as the German Agnus Dei.

Like the Sanctus, Preis und Dank has two contrasting parts - a homophonic first part and a five-part fugal second part. The chorus ends abruptly: probably Bach's intention was to emphasise Christ's victory over death.

By placing a spotlight here and a colour filter there, he keeps showing you a different scene. From the dark and weighty ouverture with the dotted-note, stately rhythms of the French overture, to the lightning-fast two-part fugue, that eventually comes back to the earlier dotted rhythm.

That is not immediately obvious, as the set sermon for this date concerns a cheerful miracle: Jesus turns water into wine at the Wedding at Cana. But Bach and his librettist read this as a metaphor for Jesus’s salvation, which will transform worldly suffering into heavenly bliss. So the aria comprises two parts. In the first part, Bach portrays the sorrow, and in the second the transcendence of the world.

The violins play the same plaintive part, unisono, thus underlining the pleading call of the alto: Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.

Netherlands Bach Society Jos van Veldhoven, conductor David Erler, altoBach - Alles mit Gott und nichts ohn ihn BWV 1127 - Rademann | Netherlands Bach SocietyNetherlands Bach Society2024-03-07 | The strophic aria Alles mit Gott und nichts ohn' ihn – recorded here for All of Bach with Hans-Christoph Rademann – was a flattering occasional work for the birthday of the duke Wilhelm Ernst van Saksen-Weimar. Bach took the duke’s motto as its starting point: “Everything with God and nothing without him”. The cheerful music and key – Bach opted for C major – emphasise the festivity of the occasion. The voice is ushered in by an instrumental introduction, and instead of just a voice and basso continuo, each strophe ends with a refrain played by a full string ensemble.

This duet for soprano and bass comes from Bach's most popular and most played cantata 'Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme' - recorded here for All of Bach with Jos van Veldhoven. This cantata revolves around the biblical story of the foolish and the wise bridesmaids: the latter miss the wedding feast because they did not have oil ready for their lamps when the bridegroom arrived. This duet is a love duet between the anima (soul) and her bridegroom (Christ), with texts from the Song of Songs, the wedding book of the Old Testament.

Netherlands Bach Society Jos van Veldhoven, conductor Maria Keohane, soprano Matthew Brook, bassBach - French Suite no. 2 in C minor BWV 813 - Hantaï | Netherlands Bach SocietyNetherlands Bach Society2024-02-15 | Bach wrote different versions of this second ‘French’ suite – recorded here for All of Bach with Pierre Hantaï. The suite thus shows that even Bach’s music wasn’t written down perfectly all at once from his head. Apparently, sometimes it was a real struggle to find the ‘right place’ for all the notes. The first two parts in particular exist in four or five successive versions. But also in the form of the suite as a whole, Bach was torn between several ideas: one minuet, two minuets… or no minuet at all?

Partly due to this general character, we can only guess at the precise occasion for which Bach wrote this cantata. It is obvious, however, that it was a festive one; maybe a wedding or a thanksgiving service. The alto aria ‘Ich will dich all mein Leben lang’ is sometimes described as one of Bach’s most inspired moments.

What we do know: the sonata is a style exercise in the Italian sonata form - Italian music was booming around 1700. Furthermore interesting is that Bach in this sonata goes easy on the rules of counterpoint - which he normally held sacred - and that much of what is heard here returns in the preludes of the Wohltemperierte Clavier.

DulckenBach - Adagio from Brandenburg Concerto no. 1 in F major BWV 1046 - Sato | Netherlands Bach SocietyNetherlands Bach Society2024-01-25 | In the Adagio from the First 'Brandenburg' concerto - performed here for All of Bach with Shunske Sato and Emma Black - the violin and oboe dance together. The instruments exchange the dramatic melody in a composition in which they are equally important. The democratic character of the Adagio is characteristic of all the 'Brandenburg' concertos: in these 'six concertos for various instruments', Bach explores the potential of the orchestral instruments, both solo and in combination, in numerous ways.
