A woman recently emailed me, asking if I knew anyone who could take her out to Panamint Valley to look for a missing person named Dennis Burton, whose truck had been found abandoned with an empty gas tank in Goler Wash. Cathy runs an organization called the Fowler-O'Sullivan Foundation, which searches for missing hikers even after official Search and Rescue efforts have ended. We ended up rounding up a group of dedicated locals, and headed out to Goler Canyon to see what we could see -- and to set up a base camp for the official, methodical grid search this coming weekend (3/2-3/3/24).
If you are interested in joining the search for Dennis Burton the weekend of March 2-3, 2024, the base camp will be placed at or near these GPS coordinates:35°52'49.1"N 117°11'00.1"W
Drive to Ballarat, CA, then turn right (south) on Wingate Road and follow that along the base of the Panamints toward Coyote Canyon Rd./ Goler Wash. until you see a big camp of several vehicles, including Unkle Gnome’s yellow FJ and Linda’s blue Jeep.
There is NO WATER and there are NO FACILITIES onsite — so please come prepared with EVERYTHING you need to dry camp in the wilderness. There is no cell signal, but there will probably be Starlink/ Wi-Fi for emergency comms. Be advised!
