The Cosmic Web, or: What does the universe look like at a VERY large scale? cristianfcao 2010-11-07 | The Millennium Simulation featured in this clip was run in 2005 by the Virgo Consortium, an international group of astrophysicists from Germany, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan and the United States. A virtual cube of 2 billion light years on a side was "filled" with 10 billion "particles" whose evolution was computed using the physical laws expected to hold in the currently known cosmologies. The initial distribution of matter, that resembled the conditions present when the cosmic microwave background radiation was emitted (about 379,000 years after the universe began) was allowed to evolve, and the formation of galaxies and black holes in the simulation were recorded. After all the computing work was done (28 days, at a rate of 200 billion calculations per second) 20 million galaxies were formed in the initial space. These galaxies and the dark matter around them formed web-like structures that resemble the shapes observed by the most recent data available in cosmic surveys, such as the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Also very importantly: the simulation provided support for our current "standard model" of cosmology, the so called: Lambda Cold Dark Matter Model. This is the 'famous' Mahler 7th that the late Mahler enthusiast Tony Duggan described as follows, while reviewing Simon Rattle's studio recording with the CBSO: (From the Tony Duggan survey of Mahler recordings: http://www.musicweb-international.com/Mahler/index.html)(...) However, Rattle is capable of much better than this (his 1992 studio recording). In fact, he's capable of a performance of this work where every aspect of his particular flair for Mahler can be heard to shattering effect. How do I know this ? I know it because I possess an "off-air" tape of a performance he gave with the Berlin Philharmonic in 1999 which is simply one of the most remarkable Mahler recordings I have heard in over thirty years and which, if it was to be released commercially (which EMI should do now if they have any sense) would immediately go to the top of any list and stay there. No wonder it was this performance that many believe clinched his appointment as the Berlin Philharmonic's next Chief Conductor (the BPO voted 13 days later). This is the performance I feel Rattle was aiming for in 1992 and it really should be more widely available and the ball is therefore in EMI's court.

It's Simon Rattle's farewell concert with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Unlike another version of this same video on Youtube, this does not have a horrible glitch in one of the climaxes of the last movement near the 57 minute mark.
