Black walnut blanks shaped into hexagons using my table saw jig. Bored out to accept 6mm by 250mm steel tube and installed with Starbond five minute epoxy. Black walnut heads cut out on bandsaw and shaped by sanding. Drilled out to accept handles glued in place. Maple inserts in heads patterned with laser and epoxied in place. Sanded to 320 grit and then used Ack’s Sanding Sealer to stabilize some tear out. Finished sanding to 400 grit, then Ack’s Abrasive Paste and Ack’s Polish/Restoring Paste. Overall dimensions: 11-1/4” long, 2-3/8” wide, 4-1/2” deep.Handle only dimensions: 8-3/4” long, 1-1/4” large diameter, 11/16” small diameter.

My First (Chain) Saw Mill EMBER Wood and Crafts - Thomas Tritt 2025-09-04 | I had the opportunity recently to obtain several large logs, pecan and white oak so far, and needed a way to prepare these for large bowl blanks. I had seen the portable chainsaw mill in use on Belko Wood (@BelkoWood) first for preparing slabs. Recently I had seen a similar mill in use by Andrew McCarn (@andrewmccarn) for preparing bowl blanks. I found a Vevor model mill on Amazon and purchased a Stihl MS 462 C-M from my local dealer (the 36-inch bar and chain I use for milling are aftermarket from Amazon).The log I am preparing is my second and is white oak. It had been down for about five years, and the sap wood is mostly rotten and has been cut away. I use the ladders and a scaffolding platform to cut the outside flat and parallel to the splitting cut and then clean up the splitting cut the same way. Without the platform I cut out a 2-inch slab to remove most of the pith to minimize checking while it dries.
Purple Heart London Pattern Spindle Roughing Gouge Handle EMBER Wood and Crafts - Thomas Tritt 2025-08-17 | 24 inch long handle for my Carter and Son 1-1/4 inch spindle roughing gouge. Had it for a while and have been using the C&S aluminum handle, but I needed another purple heart tool handle in the shop. The style is a London pattern tool handle. The blank was shaped to a hexagon on my table saw. The ferrule is 1-1/4 inch outside diameter and 1 inch inside diameter aluminum tube affixed with Starbond 5-minute epoxy and turned to clean up the outside diameter. The working end is center drilled to 3/4 inch diameter by 3 inch deep to accept the C&S tool. The center is further drilled 8 inches at 1/2 inch diameter and a brass tube affixed with the same epoxy to strengthen the narrow throat of the handle. Two holes for 5/16-18 grub screws tapped in the ferrule to allow change out of the tool. After center drilling, when starting turning, found that the blank had warped slightly, but this ended up providing a nice register for short gripping the handle. The hexagon provides a pleasant register for gripping as well. The weight ended up being well balanced. Sanded to 320 grit and then used Ack’s Abrasive Paste and Ack’s Polish/Restoring Paste. Final dimensions - handle length 24 inches (not including the tool) with major hex diameter 1-5/8 inches (minor hex diameter 1-1/2 inch). Throat minor diameter 15/16 inches.
Sinker Cypress Night Moon EMBER Wood and Crafts - Thomas Tritt 2025-08-05 | Sinker Cypress cookie slab with rotted out core and branch inset into to missing heart that looked like a crows skull. Flattened to 5-1/2 inches thick to level out the surfaces. Soda blasted entire piece to clean off everything loose. Used Designer Epoxy Deep Pour with Mother of Pearl mica to fill in and stabilize the base. Used the clear epoxy afterwards on the top, bottom, and side and also to help stabilize the rotted out sections. Sanded top and bottom to 600 grit and side to 240 grit. Finished with Ack’s abrasive paste and carnauba wax.Longest diameter was 17-1/2 inches.
Cherry Crotch & Clear Epoxy Hollow Form EMBER Wood and Crafts - Thomas Tritt 2025-08-02 | Dry cherry crotch (collected after it was cut and air dried for over 3 years) cast in clear epoxy resin. Turned to 8-1/4 inches diameter by 4-1/2 inches tall. The opening is 3 inches in diameter. Sanded to 600 grit, inside and out. Tried multiple polishing, including more epoxy, Waterlox (cleared off after I couldn’t get it to apply evenly), Ack’s, Tripoli, micro polishing pads to 12,000 grit, automotive polishing, and finally plastic polish. There are still very fine swirl marks that can be seen if the light is right, but I have accepted this is probably the best I’m going to get this piece…

Pee Dee Pecan Solenoid Override Tool EMBER Wood and Crafts - Thomas Tritt 2025-06-24 | Pee Dee pecan tree that fell during a hurricane back in 2018. Bandsaw milled some of the smalls into blanks. 3/32 pin punch inserted nearly 3/4 length of the handle, friction fit and then CA glue for strength. Turned to near final shape and stabilized with CA glue on exterior. Finished and sanded to 400 grit and then Ack’s Shine Juice. Final dimensions - handle length 4-1/8 inches, overall length 5-3/4 inches, widest diameter 5/8 inches with narrowed throat for grip and slight taper on back half.
Ambrosia Maple Butcher-Block Turntable EMBER Wood and Crafts - Thomas Tritt 2025-06-23 | Ambrosia maple glue up turned to a dish with recess on back side for turntable bearing. Sanded to 400 grit and then Ack’s Abrasive Paste. Finished with Ack’s Polish/Restoring Paste.Final dimensions - 1-3/8 inches tall by 10-5/8 inches diameter.
Ambrosia Maple & 304 Mallet EMBER Wood and Crafts - Thomas Tritt 2025-06-16 | Ambrosia maple handle (with a few beetle holes still showing) with a 1/4 hex bit holder in the pommel and a bit holder compartment for five small bits in the head. The handle was a rectangular blank to leave a flat on each side for the hand to register to. The head and compartment plug at 304 stainless steel seasoned seven times to finish. The head is threaded onto handle and the plug is threaded into the handle. The compartment is the depth of the head threads. Sanded to 320 grit and then Ack’s Abrasive Paste. May add Ack’s Polish/Restoring Paste. Final dimensions - 13-1/2 inches overall length by 1-1/2 inches diameter at the main grip.

Hand carved, filed, and sanded fluting and decoration. Threaded inserts added for retaining core with brass thumb screws. These thumb screws for blade threaded directly into wood. Brass tubes added for sound holes near the base and duplicated just below the emitter. Sanded to 400 grit and then Ack’s Abrasive Paste. Finished with Ack’s Polish/Restoring Paste. Final dimensions - 11-1/4 inches tall by 1-3/4 inches diameter.

River Birch Winged Dish EMBER Wood and Crafts - Thomas Tritt 2025-03-05 | Half log blank turned down to leave a natural and a live edge. Bit of checking was corrected with cyanoacrylate glue (Starbond). Sanded to 600 grit and finished with several layers of CA glue and then hand polished to 12000 grit with micro mesh pads. Final dimensions - 2-5/8 inches tall and 7-3/4 inches at widest (4-3/4 inches at narrowest)
Black Walnut Hallow Form EMBER Wood and Crafts - Thomas Tritt 2025-03-04 | Picked up a black walnut blank from Out of the Woods (@OutoftheWoods0623) when he cut his first run of bowl blanks. Twice turned and air dried. Did have some checking, most likely because I rushed the first turn as it was well sealed. Easily fixed with some Starbond CA glue. A lot of color variation, including some purples that may not show well on the video. Finished to 600 grit and Ack’s abrasive paste. Used Ack’s recipe for shine juice for several coats, sanded and polished back down and finished with Ack’s Polish/Restoring Paste.Final dimensions - 2-3/4 inches tall and 8-3/8 inches diameter.

Unknown Wood Boxed Bowl EMBER Wood and Crafts - Thomas Tritt 2024-09-30 | Unknown wood. Unique smell when turning and sanding, not entirely pleasant, but not quite unpleasant. Almost like you could come to like it eventually. Felt dense like hardwood, but turned very similar to pine or another soft wood. Sanded to 600 grit using sanding sealer twice during sanding to help stabilize the grain of the bowl. Finished with Ack’s abrasive paste and Ack’s Polish/Restoring Paste. Final dimensions - 2-3/4 inches tall and 5-13/16 by 5-5/8 inch sides.
Unknown Woods Pedestal Bowl EMBER Wood and Crafts - Thomas Tritt 2024-09-07 | Unknown woods used for bowl and pedestal. I think the bowl may be pecan and the pedestal cherry based on smell when turning and sanding. Sanded to 400 grit. used sanding sealer to help stabilize softer parts of the bowl. Finished with Ack’s abrasive paste and Ack’s Polish/Restoring Paste. Bowl and pedestal fitted and wood glued. Epoxy resin used in void between pieces to reenforce glue joint. Final dimensions - 4 inches tall and 7-78 inches outside diameter.
Pecan Log and Epoxy to Bowl EMBER Wood and Crafts - Thomas Tritt 2024-09-06 | Pecan bowl with natural sides left. After cleaning out the grub holes, infilled with epoxy resin; however, it had gone bad and had to remove a significant amount and let it set for a lot longer. Ended up with some ‘scarring’ in the resin that was unable to remove without altering the bowl more. Sanded to 400 grit. Finished with Waterlox Satin and cleaned up with Ack’s abrasive paste and some automotive compound and polish for the exterior resin. Final dimensions - 4 inches tall and 6-5/8 inches outside diameter.
Workshop Hammarrr!!! EMBER Wood and Crafts - Thomas Tritt 2024-07-28 | 4 lbs total (without shot for dead-blow). 2-inch brass tee with 3/4-inch red brass reducer for handle. Faces are rosewood and threaded for replacement. Handle is spalted maple that has been stabilized with Cactus Juice and wormholes filed in with black CA glue during turning. It is also threaded but has been nail wedged to keep it in place.

The bits for the top and bottom required a glue up and the side clips have different lengths. I consider these to be consumable items.The lighting is a 12V LED stripe – similar to the stock lighting. Since the inner edges of the upper portion of the Vision are curved, I was able to adhere the LEDs in one strip around three of the four sides (the back has the electronics and other components). There is one spot on the right where the flexible cable guide runs that you have to be careful of rubbing and you do need to ensure the power connector is mounted to avoid interfering with the laser travel. It has some internal supports that holds up peg board which supports the Vision. This allows the inline exhaust fan to draw off the bottom of the Vision. The exhaust fan is an 8-inch model - I managed a splitter and with two 4-inch suctions. The second duct I connected to the exhaust of the Vision (with a Delrin adapter for the existing exhaust connecter). The high-pitched noise of the Visions fan was even louder and was inhibiting flow. There are three screws that connect the fan retaining plate to the flexible cover and two more that hold it to the structure. To disconnect it from the controller, the control board cover needs to be removed and the PCB was labeled for the fan connector. I then decided I was going to try the recommended camera, but wanted to place it where the stock camera was – which extended into the unit and could only be removed from the top under the plastic viewing cover. The cover was adhered to the lid with several adhesive pads. Opening a gap, I was able to wedge the remainder of the cover off of the lid. One of the stock LED strips had to be shifted to remove the camera. The camera was held in place with 4 screws and the wiring connector was adhered to the camera with a red, stretchy adhesive. Once out I found the model number – QQSJ-9031-V2.0. I was able to find the original model – QQSJ-9031 – online and found that it was USB 2.0 Plug and Pray. The connector on the camera was a 5-pin 1.25mm pitch, common for connecting between internal components, but not to a USB plug - those appear to use a 1.5 or 2.0mm pitch connectors. Using an old USB 2.0 cable, a connector with wires, and soldering my own cable was created – and worked! The wire cable was routed out of the unit on the back right corner again. Repairing My Vacuum Pump EMBER Wood and Crafts - Thomas Tritt 2024-06-21 | During use, my oil bath vacuum pump failed to start (it had just been in use). I use this primarily for resin casting and stabilizing for use with wood turning and I was in the process of stabilizing spalted pen blanks.I checked the start capacitor first and that did not seem to be the issue and there was an obvious sludge buildup in the oil bath that was not draining out when the oil was replaced. So, I took the pump apart for a post-mortem and then decided to see if I could clean it out and get it working again - with a neat visual on how this style pump works.I did not have the camera in the best of positions (I thought it was decent while looking through it) and then bumped it later in the filming – which I did not notice until editing after the pump was back together (foreshadowing). I hope video still proves useful for others though and decided to post it anyway.

I also used the jig to run a core bit along the body to make the flutes. Drilled out the body to fit the bit and epoxied it and the ferrule in place. After final shaping and sanding the I cut it free and cleaned up the end with a foam sanding pad mounted in my lathe in a Jacob’s chuck. Batch ‘o Tool Handles - Cherry with Brass Hex Ferrule and Six Cove Flutes EMBER Wood and Crafts - Thomas Tritt 2024-05-29 | Cherry wood blank milled from a log, rounded, and a brass plumbing fitting for the ferrule. Fitting was 1/2-inch FNPT Pex adapter after threading onto the blank, I used my Wood Lathe Router Jig to clean up the hex sides and take the down to allow use of 7/8-inch wrench - I also turned off the Pex crimp end and drilled it out to fit the 1/4-inch bit holder. I also used the jig to run a core bit along the body to make the flutes. Drilled out the body to fit the bit and epoxied it and the ferrule in place. After final shaping and sanding the I cut it free and cleaned up the end with a foam sanding pad mounted in my lathe in a Jacob’s chuck. Sanded to 320 grit then polished with Ack’s Abrasive Sanding Paste and Ack’s Polish/Restoring Paste.

Cherry Log to Bowl With Natural Edge EMBER Wood and Crafts - Thomas Tritt 2024-05-28 | Cherry log turned with natural edge and undercut lip. Sanded to 400 grit then Howard’s Feed-N-Wax, Ack’s Abrasive Paste, and Howard’s again.Final dimensions - 2-1/2 inches tall (at tallest) and 6-5/8 inches outside diameter.
Zebra Pen & Pencil with Rulers and Spirit Levels EMBER Wood and Crafts - Thomas Tritt 2024-05-20 | Zebra pen (F-701) and mechanical pencil (M-701) with turned black walnut (I have a separate video on how to do this). I used my Wood Lathe Router Jig (another video of mine) to shape the hexagon faces (and another video for hexagonal pens) on each and my laser to etch an inch and a centimeter ruler on two of the faces. I also used the laser to cutout the space for the spirit bubbles on a third face and then drilled out the steel and plastic tubes of the pen to match. Filed, sanded, and cleaned up the cutout. Finished the wood with Starbond CA glue and polished to 6000 grit. Inserted the spirit bubbles using a waxed wooden dowel inside the pen and hot melt glue to set them in place (set on top of another level to match). I’ll be trying this with a lighter wood next so the rulers show up better.
Sapele Cocktail Muddler EMBER Wood and Crafts - Thomas Tritt 2024-04-28 | For personal use with iced tea to crush lemon into it. Sapele, 9-inches long, with slightly convex crushing end. Sanded to 600 grit then Ack’s Abrasive Paste. Finished with Ack’s Carnauba Polishing Paste.
Turned Hexagon Bradford Pear Bowl EMBER Wood and Crafts - Thomas Tritt 2024-04-04 | Bradford Pear bowl blank cut to hexagon and turned. Had to remove more of the hexagon features than intended due to tear out, but worked out well with final finish. Some checking filled in with Starbond Thin CA glue. Sanded to 600 grit outside. Attempted to finish with Waterlox Sealer/Finish, but could not get the coat even… removed finish and took back to 600 grit then finished with Ack’s abrasive paste and Carnuba Polishing Paste instead. I have used Waterlox in the past, not certain why it did not work out, but will try again as it’s a brilliant finish!Final dimensions - 5-5/32 inches tall and 7-1/16 inches outside top diameter, 8 inches corner to corner on the hex.
Found on Ground Red Oak Live-edge Bowl EMBER Wood and Crafts - Thomas Tritt 2024-03-31 | F.O.G Red Oak (Pin Oak likely) Live-edge Bowl. First live-edge. Had to fill in worm screw hole on the bottom after uncovering the red sparring and wanting to keep it. Heat fractures checking showed up while working - filled with Starbond CA glue. Filled Worm Screw hole with turned off cut of another wood. Sanded to 600 grit outside. Finished with blue dyed ‘shine juice’. Cleaned up with Ack’s abrasive paste and Carnuba Polishing Paste. Final dimensions - 3-3/4 inches tall (at tallest) and 7-3/4 outside diameter.
Turned Rosewood Pill Box EMBER Wood and Crafts - Thomas Tritt 2024-03-12 | Small rosewood bowl blank, cut in half to expose more ‘decorative’ features. Heat fractures showed up along grain lines while coring - filled with black Starbond CA glue. Sanded to 600 grit outside and 320 grit inside and base. Finished with red dyed ‘shine juice’. Cleaned up with Ack’s abrasive paste and Carnuba Polishing Paste. Final dimensions - 5-5/32 inches tall, 2-5/32 outside diameter, 1-5/8 inches inside diameter.

Turned Cocobolo(?) Small Octagonal(ish) Bowl EMBER Wood and Crafts - Thomas Tritt 2024-03-03 | Unmarked bowl blank, scent of Cocobolo or similar wood while being worked. Turned the corners, leaving the four flats present, giving the bowl eight side edges. Sanded to 400 grit and finished with Ack’s Abrasive Paste and Carnuba Polishing Paste. Final dimensions - 1-15/16 inches tall, 4-1/4 inches at widest, 1-13/32 inches deep inside.
Turned Rosewood Bud Vase EMBER Wood and Crafts - Thomas Tritt 2024-03-03 | Small rosewood bowl blank, cut in half to expose more ‘decorative’ features. Turned to leave two sides flat. Heat fractures showed up along grain lines while coring - filled with black Starbond CA glue. Sanded to 600 grit and finished with three coats of shellac. Cleaned up with Beall buffing system with Tripoli and white diamond compounds, then finally Ack’s Carnuba Polishing Paste. Final dimensions - 5-5/8 inches tall, 2-3/4 inches at widest, 4-9/32 inches deep inside.
diy N95 PAPR for Wood Working Made with Clipchamp EMBER Wood and Crafts - Thomas Tritt 2024-02-07 | I used a 3M Versaflo Respiratory Faceshield and Breathing Tube for this project, but it can be modified for other systems. I am also using a Ryobi ONE+ 18V battery, but adapters can be found for other batteries - anything larger than 12V will likely need a buck converter to drop the voltage to the rating of the fans.
