Common SIBO Symptoms | Are You Methane or Hydrogen Dominant SIBO?

Candida overgrowth can be one of the most stubborn gut issues to treat. While most people know about oregano oil, garlic, and pau d’arco, there are powerful lesser-known herbs that can shift treatment-resistant cases.
In this video, I’ll share 3 unusual antifungal herbs I use in my Byron Herbalist clinic:
🌿 Magnolia Bark – a potent biofilm disruptor and motility support
🌿 Tulsi (Holy Basil) – a calming adaptogen with antifungal oils
🌿 Galangal – a spicy relative of ginger with strong antifungal action
We’ll cover when to use them, when not to use them, and why there’s no single “silver bullet” when it comes to gut healing. If you’ve struggled with recurrent or resistant Candida, these tools might just be the missing link.

Hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) in the gut is a double-edged sword. In small amounts it’s protective, but in excess it can wreak havoc—driving leaky gut, food intolerances, inflammation, poor motility, and even autoimmune flares. In this video, I’ll break down the four biggest gut-damaging effects of H₂S overgrowth, the symptoms I see most often in clinic, and the practical therapies that actually help—without making things worse. If you’ve ever wondered why your gut feels like a “compost pile” or why you can’t shift persistent bloating and pain, this one’s for you.

Bloating isn’t just about what you eat — it’s about how your gut responds. Certain herbs, known as carminatives, have been used for centuries to ease digestive discomfort.
They don’t just calm the gut by relaxing smooth muscles. Many have antimicrobial effects, help reduce visceral hypersensitivity, and even support the nervous system through vagal tone. In other words, they work on multiple levels to bring relief when your digestion feels stuck or tense.

A lot of people get stuck trying to drive their methane levels all the way down to zero. The truth? You’ll never get there — and you don’t need to.
Methane is a natural part of the gut ecosystem. The real issue isn’t whether it shows up on a test, it’s whether it’s throwing your digestion out of balance, triggering gas and bloating and slowing down your gut to cause constipation.

Food intolerances don’t appear out of nowhere — they often follow a domino effect, especially in people exposed to mould or dealing with fungal overgrowth like candida
It might start with histamine issues (congestion, headaches, insomnia), then slide into oxalate pain (joints, muscles, post-exercise fatigue), followed by sulfur intolerance (bloating, gas, abdominal pain), and finally salicylate reactions (itchy skin, flushing, bloodshot eyes).
At the root? Mould and fungal overgrowth driving inflammation, nutrient depletion, and overactive immune responses. Understanding this progression is key to turning symptoms around.

If you’ve been trying to treat methane SIBO but aren’t seeing lasting results, you might be making one of the three biggest mistakes I see in clinic. The first? Jumping straight into antimicrobials without fixing the root cause issues with bowel movements and motility. Until you’re consistently moving your bowels and supporting proper gut transit, treatment can stall or symptoms quickly return. In this video, I’ll break down the three most common treatment mistakes, how they’re holding back your recovery, and the exact order I recommend for lasting methane SIBO results

Sulphur metabolism problems can be the hidden driver behind stubborn digestive issues like hydrogen sulphide SIBO. In this video, I break down my clinical approach to identifying and treating sulphur intolerance — from first-line herbal antimicrobials through to targeted sulphur repletion strategies like MSM, molybdenum, and even Epsom salt baths.
We’ll cover how to introduce these therapies without flaring symptoms, why some people improve dramatically while others struggle, and the key trial-and-error process I use to confirm we’re on the right track.
If you’ve hit a plateau in your gut health journey, understanding sulphur metabolism might be the missing link.

DAO (diamine oxidase) supplements are one of the most common recommendations for histamine intolerance — but they’re not a cure. In this video, I explain why DAO can sometimes help dramatically, why it can also do absolutely nothing, and how that response can actually give huge clues about what’s driving your symptoms. We’ll cover the gut damage and inflammation that lower DAO production, the most useful tests for pinpointing the cause, and the step-by-step approach I use to help patients get off expensive enzyme supplements and restore their own natural histamine breakdown.

If you’ve got chronic Candida overgrowth and weird symptoms that don't add up—like joint pain, brain fog, burning bladder, or even vulvodynia—oxalates might be the missing link.
Here's how it works:
Fungi like Candida albicans can produce oxalates using something called the glyoxylate pathway—a survival mechanism that turns simple carbon compounds into biofilm-building byproducts like oxalic acid.
That oxalic acid can build up in your tissues and trigger all sorts of problems:
1. Painful urination
2. Joint or muscle pain
3. Burning vaginal or bladder symptoms
4. Fatigue and brain fog
Many of these symptoms mimic autoimmune or mystery chronic illness patterns—but the root might actually be fungal.
You’ll often see high oxalates on an Organic Acids Test right alongside fungal markers like arabinose or tartaric acid.
It’s not just dietary. This is endogenous oxalate production—from inside your own gut.

Methane SIBO—also called Intestinal Methanogen Overgrowth (IMO)—often shows up as sluggish, stuck digestion. Think bloating that worsens through the day, hard, dry stools, and that heavy, full feeling that just won’t shift. These patients often don’t respond to typical SIBO treatments because it’s not just bacteria—it’s archaea, and they play by different rules. If you’re feeling constipated no matter what you try, this could be the missing piece.

Tried everything for methane SIBO and still not better?
Before you start another round of antimicrobials, elemental diets, or rifaximin, you need to understand why many methane SIBO treatments fail — and what to focus on instead.
In this video, I walk through the root cause drivers I see again and again in resistant methane SIBO cases:
– Impaired gut motility (and how to spot it)
– Vagus nerve dysfunction
– Bile flow issues
– Butyrate deficiency
– Mold exposure
– Anticholinergic medications
– And the post-infectious connection most people overlook
If your constipation, bloating, or gas hasn’t shifted — or you keep relapsing — this is the reset you’ve been looking for.

Mould illness presents as a complex, multi-system disruption — often missed or misdiagnosed. In many cases, it underpins persistent gut symptoms, histamine intolerance, chronic fatigue, and unexplained pain syndromes. Mycotoxins impair bile flow, drive immune dysregulation, disrupt phase 2 detoxification, and create an internal environment that favours fungal overgrowth, oxalate accumulation, and inflammatory loops that don’t resolve.
Patients often arrive with a long history of unsuccessful treatments — SIBO protocols that fail, recurring Candida, food reactions that don’t make sense — and only improve once mould is identified and addressed as the root driver. The clinical patterns are consistent: sluggish bowels, methane SIBO, mast cell reactivity, energy crashes, post-exertional malaise, and nutrient depletions like thiamine. For some, it's a subtle contributor. For others, it’s the reason they haven’t improved.

Histamine intolerance isn’t just about food — it’s a sign your system is inflamed and overwhelmed.
Mast cells play a central role here. When they’re triggered, they release histamine and other inflammatory chemicals that can lead to symptoms like rashes, bloating, brain fog, fatigue, and anxiety. In some cases, this can progress into mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) — where the immune system becomes hypersensitive to everything.
This overview explores how chronic inflammation, gut dysfunction, and nervous system stress all tie into histamine overload — and what patterns I often see in practice when MCAS is part of the picture.

If bloating is your number one gut complaint, this is the deep dive for you. I’m breaking down the real root causes of bloating — not just surface-level stuff like "eat slower" or "cut out dairy."
In this video, I walk through the five core dysfunctions I see in clinic that lead to chronic bloating: poor digestive fire, sluggish motility, microbial imbalances (like SIBO or Candida), bile flow issues, and nervous system dysregulation.
You’ll also learn the exact herbs, nutrients, and strategies I use with patients to actually treat bloating from the ground up — not just mask symptoms.

Struggling with new food intolerances that came out of nowhere?
Mould exposure could be the hidden trigger. It sets off a domino effect: gut inflammation, mast cell activation, and nervous system dysregulation — all of which make you react to foods you used to tolerate just fine.

Is your gut test missing the mark?
The OAT test (Organic Acids Test) can reveal hidden fungal overgrowth like Candida, yeast, and mould — even when stool tests show nothing.
What to look for on the OAT — like arabinose, tartaric acid, and oxalates — and how these markers connect to fatigue, bloating, brain fog, and histamine issues.
This video explains how the herbal medicine Perilla can reduce serum IgE, histamine, and tumor necrosis factor alpha, which are key players in allergic reactions. It breaks down how these molecules trigger mast cell activation to release inflammatory messengers, affecting the immune system and allergy symptoms.

After working with thousands of gut health patients across Australia and New Zealand, I’ve seen the same mistakes over and over again—people spinning their wheels, stuck in symptom loops, and wondering why nothing’s working. This video breaks down the six most common gut healing mistakes I see in clinic, from jumping off the plan too soon to obsessing over the wrong root cause (hello parasites). If you're relying on diet alone or skipping the synergy between probiotics, prebiotics and herbs, this one’s especially for you.
The goal here is simple: help you get better, faster—with fewer detours. If you’re dealing with chronic bloating, constipation, gut pain, or food intolerances that won’t budge, make sure you’re not making these mistakes.
And if you’re ready for real support, bookings are open for new patients across Australia and NZ via the link below.

I want to share some of my top herbs for mould detoxification and supporting patients through mould exposure. Mould toxicity is often linked to a leaky gut and can trigger chronic fatigue. We can use toxin binders to help remove mould and mycotoxins.
If you’ve been exposed to mould and still feel fatigued, reactive, or stuck — even after leaving the source — you’re not alone. For many people, the lingering symptoms aren’t just from mould exposure itself, but from the mycotoxins that stay trapped in the body.
In this video, I share the herbal categories I rely on clinically to support mould detoxification — especially in patients dealing with constipation, sluggish bile, and poor lymph flow. These are foundational issues that can stall any recovery.
I cover:
Why bowel movements must come first
How bile flow impacts toxin clearance
The most overlooked piece of mould detox: the lymph
These aren’t trendy detox hacks — they’re tools I actually use in clinic to help people move from reactive and inflamed, to stable and resilient.

In Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis, increased intestinal permeability is nearly always present—but whether it’s a driver of inflammation or simply a consequence remains a key question.
Evidence shows that leaky gut can exist before clinical IBD symptoms appear, especially in first-degree relatives of IBD patients. This suggests a possible role in disease onset, not just disease progression.
Tight junction dysfunction, microbial imbalance, and loss of oral tolerance all feed into this loop—damaged barrier, immune activation, inflammation, repeat. In practice, supporting the gut lining alongside immune modulation and microbiome work can be crucial for long-term stability.
Understanding this dynamic is critical when mapping out a truly root-cause approach to IBD.

Oregano can be a powerful antimicrobial, but it’s easy to overdo—especially if you go straight to the capsules.
In clinic, I almost always start with an alcohol-based oregano tincture. It’s easier to dose, more gradual on the gut lining, and gives me better control over timing and intensity. Once we’ve prepped the gut and seen how the person responds, I may transition to enteric-coated oregano oil capsules if needed—especially in cases of stubborn dysbiosis, SIBO, or Candida overgrowth.
This stepped approach helps reduce the risk of gut irritation, detox backlash, or flaring symptoms. Oregano is strong medicine—but how and when you use it makes all the difference.

The SAM axis is your body’s rapid-response system. Before cortisol, before the HPA axis, it’s the SAM axis—a direct link between your brain, nervous system, and adrenal medulla that floods the body with adrenaline and noradrenaline within seconds.
This pathway:
Activates your sympathetic nervous system
Increases heart rate, blood pressure, and glucose output
Temporarily diverts resources from digestion, immunity, and detox
Is meant to switch on fast and turn off just as quickly
But when the SAM axis is chronically activated, it keeps your body in a constant state of alert. That’s when symptoms start stacking—gut issues, histamine intolerance, insomnia, anxiety, fatigue.
Understanding this system is key if you’re stuck in fight-or-flight and can’t seem to come down. This is the missing link between stress and physical symptoms that often get written off.

Fungal overgrowths don’t always show up where you’d expect. In this video, I’m walking through how something like Candida or Aspergillus can quietly drive a wide range of symptoms — not just gut issues, but joint pain, fatigue, histamine intolerance, brain fog, and more.
I cover the four main fungal byproducts I see in testing — oxalates, acetaldehyde, ammonia, and sometimes mycotoxins — and how these affect different systems in the body.
This isn’t a protocol or treatment guide. It’s just some thoughts from clinic, some patterns I’ve seen on organic acids testing, and a few ideas that might help you make sense of strange or lingering symptoms — especially if nothing else seems to explain what’s going on.

There’s a master switch in your cells that controls hundreds of protective genes—including the ones that drive antioxidant production, detoxification, and cellular resilience. It’s called NRF2 (nuclear factor erythroid 2–related factor 2), and it might be one of the most underutilised tools in functional health.

Candida can be tricky to treat for some and biofilms are a big part of the reason why. These protective layers make it harder for antifungals, herbs, and even your immune system to reach the underlying infection. If your treatment isn’t working, or symptoms keep coming back, biofilms might be the missing piece.

Bile isn’t just for breaking down fats — it’s essential for gut health, microbiome balance, and toxin elimination. When bile flow slows, fat can start showing up in your stool. In this short, we break down what steatocrit testing tells us, what fatty stools look like, and what it means for your digestion.

Treating methane SIBO can feel like hitting a wall. You've tried the herbs, the antibiotics, the diets — and you're still bloated, still constipated, and still stuck. This video breaks down why that happens.
Most methane SIBO protocols fail because they focus on killing microbes too early. But methane is rarely just about the bugs — it's about the terrain that lets them thrive.
In this video, I unpack the top 3 mistakes I see over and over again in methane SIBO treatment:
1. Jumping straight to antimicrobials — without setting the foundation
2. Ignoring constipation — or assuming it will resolve on its own
3. Overlooking motility — and mistaking daily bowel movements for proper gut transit
We’ll also cover how to assess your own transit time (even if you're going daily), what your symptoms might be trying to tell you, and why eradicating all methane isn’t the goal — building tolerance is.
If you're tired of going in circles with methane SIBO, this might be the reframe you need.

Certain gut bacteria produce histamine. Others block the enzymes that break it down. If your gut’s out of balance, it can tip the scales toward overload — even if your diet hasn’t changed. This short breaks down the connection between bacterial imbalances and histamine intolerance.

Candida overgrowth in the gut is increasingly linked to histamine intolerance, causing symptoms like sinus congestion, headaches, anxiety, and insomnia. Research suggests Candida triggers mast cell degranulation, flooding the body with histamine and perpetuating inflammation. This immune response, often linked to gut dysbiosis, can overlap with nutrient deficiencies, genetics, or other microbiome imbalances. A low-histamine diet for 4–8 weeks can help identify histamine’s role in symptoms, though it is not a cure. Comprehensive testing, such as stool or organic acid analyses, can confirm fungal overgrowth. Treating Candida at its root may improve histamine tolerance and overall health.

Most of what I work with is digestion. Supporting people with digestive symptoms makes up the bulk of my practice but there are always symptoms that stem from digestive disorders and one of them is anxiety. The gut brain connection is as real as the air we breathe.
Many of the patients I support have trouble with sleep, anxiety, restlessness and even insomnia and supporting their nervous system goes a long way in getting them feeling better so that they can actually recover their health.
Lately I've been fine tuning and minimising the herbs in my dispensary. When I first started I wanted to work with and understand each and every herb out there. Now I want to know a few really really well. Which ones can I rely on to get the job done and actually improve someone's health and wellbeing. Passionflower stands out as a TOP herbal nervine. It is very calming, grounding and if needed sedating as well. I'll focus on this one when someone is overthinking, has too much on their plate or is nearing burn out. Of all the herbal nervines (herbs to support the nervous system) this one stands out in the top ten easily.

Leaky gut or intestinal permeability is a symptom of something deeper. There is something that is actually driving the leaky gut issue and until that is resolved you won't see significant or long lasting improvements in your leaky gut and all the symptoms it causes.
SIBO, or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, is one major driver of leaky gut that I see ALL the time! Learn more about that in the full length video here - youtube.com/watch?v=TRzsK60YJWw

There are a bunch of things you can do to support histamine detox in the body and one big thing is to support the enzymes that process histamine into less toxic metabolites. Today we're covering the ALDH enzyme and you can learn more about the full process of supporting this enzyme in the full length video linked at the end of this short!

This is an overview video on the top strategies or treatment aims I would be focusing on with my patients in the Byron Herbalist clinic. Here we want to ensure each of these three body systems are working properly and helping to support or facilitate proper transport and elimination of toxins from the body.
What toxins? Maybe these are environmental pollutants like heavy metals, biotoxins like mould byproducts (mycotoxins) or even persistent pollutants like fertilisers or herbicides. For many people effective elimination is compromised and needs support with herbs, nutrients, diet and lifestyle changes too!

Today we're talking about prebiotic fibres particularly PHGG or partially hydrolysed guar gum. This is a low FODMAP prebiotic fibre that is gentle and well tolerated by most and helps to rebalance the gut microbiome, improve bowel movements and bloating and reduce gas.
When you work on improving your gut microbiome knock on effects can include resolving leaky gut, better skin, better mood, better sleep and more!
