Between them, they’ve reviewed hundreds of ships, built global followings, and helped shape how thousands of people think about cruising.
This is not your typical cruise interview. No brand talking points. Just honest, intelligent conversation about the state of the cruise industry, from two people who have seen it all.
Gary Bembridge has long been known for his balanced, thoughtful commentary on cruise travel. His YouTube channel Tips For Travellers has become one of the most trusted sources of cruise advice, especially for mature and experienced travellers. Ritzy Travel Guide, meanwhile, brings a bold, luxury-leaning perspective, delivering highly visual reviews with strong opinions and no fear of calling out when something isn’t good enough.
Together, they sit down with Sail Away Magazine to discuss the realities of modern cruising — the good, the bad, and the bits many content creators never mention. Whether you’re a long-time follower of Gary Bembridge or a fan of Ritzy Travel Guide’s stylish approach, this episode goes far beyond ship reviews. It tackles the challenges facing the cruise industry in 2025, and questions whether some parts of the cruising experience are starting to lose their way.

Once the pride of the Netherlands and the flagship of Holland America Line, SS Rotterdam carried royalty, emigrants, and adventurers across the Atlantic before transitioning into a successful cruise ship. Unlike many of her contemporaries, she escaped the scrapyard and has been lovingly restored. Today, she lives on as a floating hotel and museum in the heart of Rotterdam.
Filmed both in Southampton, with Queen Mary 2 as a backdrop, and onboard the ship herself, this feature-length documentary is presented by naval architect Dr Stephen Payne, designer of Queen Mary 2. Together we explore the remarkable story of SS Rotterdam, from her origins to her transformation into one of the most unique attractions in the Netherlands.
Highlights of this documentary include:
- The history and heritage of SS Rotterdam - Her engineering innovations and mid-century design - The fascinating class system and what life was like onboard during her sailing years - Rare archival footage of her in service, showing cabins, dining, and entertainment - Unique features such as the Tropic Bar, the indoor mosaic swimming pool, and the curious “bugs in the glass” found in the Smoking Lounge - Why she remains a priceless time capsule and the perfect place to stay in Rotterdam today
Whether you are passionate about cruise ships, fascinated by maritime history, or simply curious about experiencing a ship that is part hotel, part museum, and fully a legend, this documentary will take you on a voyage through time.

In this episode of Sail Away: Uncensored, we reveal the letter that shocked us. A formal 5-year ban from every single Carnival group cruise line, including P&O Cruises, Cunard, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Costa, AIDA and Seabourn.
Why aren't we allowed to cruise with Carnival anymore? Because Carnival says they “cannot offer us the holiday we are looking for.”
We haven’t misbehaved. We haven’t broken any rules. And we haven’t posted anything inaccurate. We’ve simply shared honest reviews, stood up for passengers during cruise cancellations, and asked tough questions about accountability, including the Maleth Aero scandal that left hundreds of P&O Cruises' guests stranded and uncompensated.
So why the cruise ban? Is this censorship against paying guests and creators? And could the same thing happen to you, just for leaving a bad review?
🎙️ In this episode, Dan and Jay break down: – What the letter said – Why the reasoning doesn’t add up – How cruise lines are dealing with criticism in 2025 – And what this means for passengers, journalists and creators alike

👀 P&O Cruises vs. Maleth Aero: Who Owes Passengers £500K? Link: youtube.com/watch?v=_cWi8fp1Tqc&t=266sInside the Job of a Southampton Cruise Ship Pilot – What Do They Really Do?Sail Away Magazine2025-06-08 | What does a cruise ship pilot actually do? And why does every cruise ship hand over control to one before entering port? In this episode of Sail Away: Uncensored, we sit down with Barry Sadler, a veteran marine pilot for the Port of Southampton, to explore one of the most crucial and most misunderstood jobs in the cruise industry.
Most passengers never realise that when their cruise ship approaches land, it’s not the captain guiding the vessel in. That responsibility belongs to a local expert known as the marine pilot. Barry has spent decades navigating some of the largest cruise ships in the world through the tight, tide-driven waters of Southampton. From the moment he boards the ship via a pilot boat — often in dangerous conditions — the safety of everyone on board rests in his hands.
Over the course of this raw, honest conversation, Barry explains the full scope of the marine pilot’s role. He reveals how these professionals are trained, how they communicate with captains and port control, and what really happens when conditions turn unpredictable. He also shares the intense reality of climbing aboard a moving vessel at sea, sometimes in complete darkness or rough weather, before taking the helm and guiding a floating city to its berth.
If you’ve ever searched for how cruise ships dock, what a marine pilot does, or who is actually in control when a cruise ship arrives in port, this episode gives you the inside story. It’s a side of cruising you don’t usually see — and once you hear it, you’ll never look at port days the same way again.

👀 P&O Cruises vs. Maleth Aero: Who Owes Passengers £500K? Link: youtube.com/watch?v=_cWi8fp1Tqc&t=266sCruising is Life 👌🏻🛳️ #cruising #cruiseship #nclSail Away Magazine2025-05-27 | ...We cruised on Carnival Miracle, and we HATED IT! 🛳️ #carnivalmiracle #carnivalcruise #cruiseSail Away Magazine2025-05-25 | ...I Cruised on Carnival Miracle… And Hated It!Sail Away Magazine2025-05-25 | We cruised on Carnival Miracle… and it turned out to be the worst cruise we’ve ever done.
From the moment we stepped onboard Carnival Miracle, things just went downhill. Embarkation was absolute chaos — the most disorganised we've ever seen — and things didn’t improve once we got on the ship. What greeted us was a filthy, neglected suite cabin that looked and felt like it hadn’t been properly cleaned or maintained in years. Sticky surfaces, worn furnishings, broken fixtures — this wasn’t just disappointing, it was completely unacceptable for a mainstream cruise line.
We always try to give a fair, balanced review, especially when trying a new line. Carnival was one we hadn’t done before, and we were curious to see what the hype was about. But Carnival Miracle left us baffled. The décor onboard is downright disorienting — not just quirky, but bizarre to the point of being unpleasant. The ship’s layout made it a chore to navigate, and the overall atmosphere felt tired and lifeless.
Daytime activities were practically non-existent, especially on port days where the ship felt like a ghost town. Entertainment in the evening was slightly better, but still fell flat. Watching “Deal or No Deal” as a paid event in the main theatre — instead of a real show — summed up the whole experience. And don’t even get us started on the tipping culture onboard, which we found both uncomfortable and, at times, completely abused. From guests bribing staff to skip queues, to bar service that barely existed unless you were throwing money around, it all just felt wrong.
If you're thinking about booking Carnival Miracle, especially as a first-time Carnival cruiser, watch this video first. This ship left us frustrated, disappointed, and counting down the days to get off.

What was once a stylish, forward-thinking cruise ship has been stripped of personality under TUI’s Marella brand — and the result is… bland.
From the moment we boarded, something felt off. The ship’s design is uninspired, the atmosphere feels flat, and the excitement you expect on a modern cruise ship just isn’t there. While other Marella ships have charm and flair, Explorer feels tired, lacking the wow-factor that today’s cruise passengers expect.
We dive into everything: the mediocre food, dated entertainment, missing aft pool, and underwhelming spaces that left us questioning the value for money — especially when lines like P&O Cruises offer more for less. Can a ship like this really compete in 2025?
If you’re considering a Marella cruise, or wondering whether Explorer can still excite a seasoned cruiser, this video is for you. Spoiler alert: the answer might surprise you — but probably not in the way you’d hope.

While training for his private pilot’s licence in Florida, Jamie’s aircraft caught fire mid-flight, leaving him trapped in a burning cockpit at 1,000 feet. With flames consuming his body, his only option was the unthinkable—climbing onto the wing of a moving aircraft and jumping for his life.
Jamie was burned alive, suffering third-degree burns over 63 percent of his body, and given just a five percent chance of survival. Yet, against all odds, he lived to tell the tale. His journey through excruciating recovery, mental battles, and finding purpose in his new life is one of the most powerful stories of resilience you’ll ever hear.
In this brutally honest conversation, Jamie reveals what went through his mind as his plane burst into flames, the split-second decision to jump from the aircraft while on fire, and the raw reality of surviving when the odds were stacked against him. He opens up about the darkest moments of his recovery, the mental battles he faced, and how he found the will to keep going. He also shares how diving and the ocean became his escape from trauma and how his work with Help for Heroes has allowed him to give back to others.

👀 Sex, Drugs, and Scandal on Cruise Ships: Cruising as Crew Exposed Link: youtu.be/vosx1cxX9wY?si=7gkhNj9V3D_CDxAjAmerican Tipping Culture is OUT OF CONTROL!Sail Away Magazine2025-01-24 | In this thought-provoking episode of Sail Away: Uncensored, we tackle one of the cruise industry’s most divisive and debated issues—tipping. From its humble beginnings to its controversial status today, we uncover the history of tipping on cruise ships and explore how it became such a deeply ingrained practice in modern cruising.
Is tipping out of control? And is America’s culture of gratuities to blame for the system we now see across cruise lines globally? We delve into how tipping has evolved from optional generosity to a mandatory expectation, often automatically added to passengers’ bills. But the big question remains—are cruise lines using tipping as an excuse to pay their crew inadequate wages? Are gratuities actually reaching the hardworking crew members, or are they just a way for cruise companies to shift labour costs onto passengers?
We’ll also look at how different cruise lines approach tipping—whether they include it in the fare, leave it optional, or enforce daily charges—and how these practices vary between regions and cruising styles. Through candid discussions and behind-the-scenes insights, we explore the financial and ethical implications of tipping for passengers, crew members, and the industry at large.
This episode pulls no punches, questioning the fairness of the system, the transparency of cruise line policies, and what it all means for the future of cruising. Whether you’re a staunch defender of tipping or wish it would disappear entirely, this deep dive will leave you with plenty to think about.
