Animation Tests 2021 vs 2022 - CASSIE & THE WOLF #animation #cartoon #indieanimation #shorts roseshards 2024-03-28 | Ok so since A LOT of people were interested in my latest comparison here's another one! These ones are bit old but they're probably the only direct redos I've done haha.The animations on the top were rigged, the bottom ones were hand drawn. It's not really a fair comparison because I was never trying to perfect the animation in the first ones, I just wanted to test out how I may approach lighting for the series, so I just made them very quickly. That being said, I did the rigged versions in the same amount of time (around 60-90 minutes I believe) and was able to add additional movement AND make things more fluid, which highlights why my indie projects are going to be rigged! In my experience there's just so much more you can do with rigs when there are tight deadlines/a limited budget.Big things are coming soon for Cassie & the Wolf! I was never intending to make a deliberate redo, it just sort of happened haha, which is why the second shots are so different. Both animations were done really quickly due to time restrictions, but given the top is rigged and the bottom is traditional I think this showcases WHY I'm using rigged animation for my projects--I'm able to give a more fluid and consistent result despite the many obstacles that come with being an indie creator! I mean, there also was a good amount of improvement involved since these were done 2.5 years apart, but my point still stands lol

I had gotten my friend to do two rigs for me and offered to pay her, but she just let it be volunteer work instead, otherwise this total would have been even more. Costs add up really quick, but I really am passionate about what I'm creating.That being said, I definitely don't have endless funds to pour into my projects--I did like 99% of the work myself just to save on costs. Sync Your Drawing Layers in Toon Boom! #animation #cartoon #indieanimation roseshards 2024-03-08 | I feel like this one's pretty straightforward, so I'm not gonna elaborate a tonnnn in the description, but this is how I rig pretty much all my mouths! What I like to do personally is draw the mouth and chin/etc once, sync them together, and then duplicate the mouth drawing so I can just redraw it while keeping the base chin shape in there. After I do all the mouth shapes I then go in and adjust the chin frame-by-frame so it matches. For mouths specifically, it's usually good to keep things on separate layers in case you want to deform/move one part, but not the other, like how I move the mouth around at the end but it doesn't do anything to the chin. You can sync pretty much any drawing layers together, and there's no limit to how many can be synced together as far as I'm aware. Really easy and useful feature! So it feels weird to finally complete this animation and to embark on a new chapter of my life without her. I've decided I'm finally going to start taking steps to develop the Cream & Spooky pilot, and I've started production on episode 1 of Cassie & the Wolf. Animation Revisions Are Important #animation #cartoon #indieanimation #creamandspooky #warriorcats roseshards 2024-02-19 | Since I just released my short "Spooky's Escape" on YouTube the other day (giving it a watch would be appreciated!) I can finally post a lot more about it! I wanted to talk about this shot and the difference that coming back to revise your work can make.Admittedly, I was moving a bit fast with this when I did the original version of the shot, and looking back at it a few weeks or so later I felt it didn't really hook up well to the audio or to the next shot, where Spooky is leaned over and breathing heavily. So I went and lowered his head to match the next shot a bit more.A while later, around a week before the short's release, I looked at the shot and was like "yeah, I can definitely improve this", so I pushed his head down a bit further because I still felt it didn't match and added more up-and-down movement as well as a bit more secondary motion. I also noticed there had been some foot sliding, so I touched that up. I also made him a little smaller, and I adjusted the shape of the trees of the foreground to frame the shot better.At the moment, it's just me doing the vast majority of the work for these shorts. While I have to cut corners in some areas to be realistic with myself, I also want to improve quality where possible. This revision probably didn't take longer than an hour, so I thought it was a worthy time investment for something that would make a noticeable difference in the final product. If you're also aspiring to be an indie creator, it's important to learn where to spend more of your time when your resources are limited.I'd love to get a team to help out at some point in the future, so I've been saving up! Rigging on the Wrong Settings... #animation #cartoon roseshards 2024-02-12 | It really be like that sometimes........To clarify, this reel was made entirely as a joke, it's not really that doom and gloom! I just wanted to kind of poke fun at my earlier self because I had somehow managed to teach myself a TON about rigging, including how to do master controllers, yet somehow completely overlooked what may be the most basic rule of rigging, which is to set all your pegs to "separate" and not "3d path" lol. You can still animate it if you put it to the wrong setting, but there will prob be some issues at some point, like maybe the eye will randomly move behind the head and you have to fix it frame-by-frame. It's not a death sentence for your rig, but please don't be like me It can be fixable if you do make that mistake, but only in certain scenarios. For my Spooky rig, I didn't rig a front or side view and I only had like 3 poses saved for reuse, so I just took the L and switched the settings. The base pose is fine if you switch the settings, so long as you didn't deform or move anything into that position. It's the poses you did AFTER that usually get ruined. As for Wolf's rig he was actually mostly ok, I was scared of checking for a while though bc of what happened with Spooky's rig lol. But I had done most of him on a company computer at the time and I guess someone had set Toonboom to make pegs "separate" and not "3d path" by default, so I was lucky. I may have exaggerated a little for comedic effect Hehe. But also he was my first ever rig (ambitious I know ) anddddd he's broken in many other ways so that's how working with him FEELS lol. I'm redoing his entire design and rig though so it's allllll good
