The bank was identified as the largest lender to fossil fuel companies by far in 2023.Four other women who also took part in the action against JP Morgan were given a total of 45 months suspended sentences between them plus a total of 330 hours of unpaid work in their communities.All five women have lodged appeals due to abuse of process by Judge Silas Reid, potentially leading to the convictions being deemed ‘unsafe’. We read our 'Declaration of Rebellion', gave impassioned speeches, and blocked our first road.Since that day, we've been in continuous REBELLION.For many around the world, the Rebellion had been going on for generations, and Extinction Rebellion really just joined their fight. We added more colour, creativity, and above all: fierce love and rage. We grabbed the imagination of many and soon grew into an international movement.Ordinarily, an organization reaching 5 years is a cause for celebration. But not for us. Our presence today signals that we haven't yet reached our goals.It's unacceptable that we're still here, that our friends are behind bars for doing what's right, and that the world faces more carbon emissions, deforestation, pollution, species extinction, and conflicts while our planet burns and drowns.Extinction Rebellion UK is extending our community beyond our movement. Historic Victory for Treasury Fire Engine Protesters | Extinction Rebellion UK Extinction Rebellion (XR) UK 2023-10-30 | As of October 12 2023, the jury in the historic Treasury Fire Engine Trial has acquitted five of the six defendants of conspiracy to commit criminal damage to His Majesty’s Treasury building by a majority verdict at Southwark Crown Court.On 3 October 2019, Extinction Rebellion activists sprayed 1,800 litres of fake blood made of washable dye over the Treasury building from a decommissioned fire engine. The dramatic spectacle – which made the front pages around the world – drew attention to the Treasury’s funding of new fossil fuel projects abroad in direct contravention of the globally agreed mission to keep global temperature rises below 1.5C. The Treasury claimed the cost of the damage from the fake blood was nearly £20,000.Defendant Liam Norton said: “Today’s verdict was a victory for common sense and a victory against the Treasury who, as our action was designed to highlight, continued to fund fossil fuel projects abroad for five years after the adoption of the Paris Agreement. The Treasury continues to act criminally today by financing the development of new oil and gas fields in the North Sea including Rosebank. This ensures we can never keep within safe climate limits. This trial was never in the public interest.
