They brandished Moroccan flags, banners, photographs of the King, and the Qur'an. On the 7th of November, the hundreds of thousands of Moroccans advanced several kilometers into the Spanish Sahara. In order to prepare for a possible counter-invasion from Algeria (a major rival of Morocco), the Moroccan Army had entered the northeast of the region on the 31st of October. As the marchers crossed the border, the Spanish Armed Forces were ordered not to open fire. Spain feared that challenging Morocco could result in greater political instability, or worse, a full-on colonial war. Spain instead agreed to enter negotiations with Morocco and Mauritania. The Spanish Sahara was divided between Morocco and Mauritania by the Madrid Accords on the 14th of November. Mauritania withdrew from the Western Sahara in 1979 due to pressure from local rebels, leaving their territory to Morocco. The Green March was internationally condemned, though not by the US or France, who both had a distaste towards Algeria. The US remains the only nation which recognizes Morocco's full sovereignty over the Western Sahara.

As tens of thousands of young students fled, other protesters fought back, stoning the attacking troops, and overturning and setting fire to military vehicles.That morning, the smell of blood lingered in the hot summer air. The exact number killed may never be known, but estimates range from several hundred to several thousand.Flowers of Freedom was written by Hong Kong artist Thomas Chow shortly after the protests. In the eruption, the blast of lava and hot rock devastated 600 square kilometers of land, wiping them clean of all life. A 5.1 magnitude earthquake rocked the landscape, and ash was deposited in 11 US states. The massive eruption caused snow, ice, and entire glaciers on the mountain to melt, forming a series of large volcanic mudslides that reached as far as 80 km southward to the Columbia River. This was the biggest landslide in recorded history.Among those killed in the eruption was Harry R. Truman, a World War I veteran, bootlegger, prospector, and lodge owner who became something of a folk hero in the midst of the terror. He was known for his resilience in refusing to leave, committing that if that mountain shall go down, so will he. Harry R.
